Saluting a legacy of excellence, Governor provides more input on opening Texas schools dedication to education (San Antonio) -- Texas Governor Greg Abbott is promising school districts that they will have plenty of flexibility for the upcoming school year. The governor says the top priority is to make sure teachers, staff, students, and parents are kept safe from COVID-19.
Abbott told reporters in San Antonio on Tuesday that local school districts can base their decisions on advice from local public health authorities. He again stressed that districts can do eight weeks of online-only education before seeking a waiver from the Texas Education Agency for more time. Abbott also promised all schools would have plenty of personal protection equipment (PPE) for the upcoming school year. The Governor noted that the state will continue

to purchase and distribute PPE to schools at no cost to the school districts. “Health and safety remain our top priority as we approach the upcoming school year,” said Governor Abbott. “To meet that priority, the State of Texas is purchasing and distributing vast amounts of PPE to Texas school districts. As local school boards make determinations on how and when they choose to open schools, the state is working to help ensure that there will be a strong supply of PPE waiting for them to keep students, teachers, and staff safe.”
According to the governor’s office, the state has already distributed thousands of PPEs to districts across the state, including 59,410,640 masks; 567,948 gallons of hand sanitizer; 24,017 thermometers; and 511,294 face shields.

Seguin ISD shares changes to Head Start Program at local campus By Cindy AguirreHerrera
(Seguin) - The Seguin ISD is gearing up for its ongoing partnership with the Head Start Program. The federally funded grant program, however, will undergo a few changes during the 20202021 school year. The program for the last several years has been held in partnership with the pre-k classes at the Seguin ISD’s Ball Early Childhood Center. Mark Cantu, the chief academic officer for the Seguin ISD, says as of this July, the new awarded service provider for the Guadalupe County Head Start Program is the Community Council of South-Central Texas. For the last five years, the pre-k program has been under the direction of the BCFS Health
and Human Services. Although operating under a new umbrella, Cantu says the program will continue to offer additional support to the lowest socioeconomic students and families in the district. “We’ve been in partnership with Head Start for many years as they provide the family services. They provide additional educational opportunities and of course, they’ve provided some health opportunities so it’s something that we’ve benefited from,” said Cantu. Among the most notable difference for families will be the program itself. Cantu says all classes at Ball will now be for fouryear-olds. Last year and in prior years, we year-olds only. also served three-year-olds. Remember that “It would be a four-year- the state also had a big push that we educate old program which we’ve four-year-olds all day instead of just half a always served four- day and so, we are making the move from a
half day three year-old program and a half-day four year-old program to a full four year old program so now we will see our four-year-olds all day,” said Cantu. See HEAD START, page 3

Former Matador star P.J. Hall traded from Raiders to Vikings franchise traded Hall to the Minnesota Vikings for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2021 on Monday.
The Raiders had plans to release Hall before agreeing to the trade with Minnesota. Hall fills a positional void for the Vikings in the wake of expected starting defensive lineman Michael Pierce opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. Pierce told the team last week he will sit out the season for health reasons, due to the risk that COVID-19 poses for him as an asthma sufferer. He uses an inhaler and also had a 2017 bout with pneumonia. The pandemic was also a factor in the Raiders’ decision, with NFL teams making the necessary moves to open training camp with 80 players rather than the traditional 90. Former Seguin Matador P.J. Hall was a second-round pick in coach Jon Gruden’s first draft with the Raiders in 2018, selected 57th overall out of Sam Houston State. The 6-foot, 305-pound Hall played most of his rookie season as a reserve before starting 12 games in 2019. The 2013 Seguin graduate totaled 30 appearances, 18 starts, 1.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, and 48 tackles over the course of two seasons with the Raiders. Hall recorded an FCS-record 86.5 tackles for loss and school records for sacks (42) and blocked kicks (14) as an All-America performer at Sam Houston State.
Las Vegas also signed veteran defensive tackle Maliek Collins away from Dallas for a $6-million deal with $5.75-million in guaranteed money.
He will have a chance to fill the nose tackle spot the Vikings signed Pierce for in March after releasing Linval Joseph for salary cap savings.

SPORTS SCAC announces that all NCAA competition within the conference has been delayed until January
(Lawrenceville, Ga.) -- Following up on an announcement made by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference on July 16, and in an effort to plan for spring semester scheduling for fall and winter sports, the league’s Presidents Council announced that all NCAA competition within the conference has been delayed until January due to ongoing health and safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic

The SCAC’s Presidents Council agreed to meet in September and October to reassess the landscape of college athletics to see if adjustments to the sports schedules should be considered.
On July 16, the SCAC announced with its Presidents Council that NCAA intercollegiate competition would not occur during Fall 2020 due to health and safety concerns stemming
“Today’s decision helps provide guidance to the league’s Scheduling Task Force as we attempt to shift our fall and winter sports schedules into the spring semester,” said SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. “As we said on our call, everything is written in pencil and, although we need to plan for what we know today, we also need to remain nimble if circumstances change.” Texas Lutheran University has four “winter” sports out of its 18 intercollegiate programs. Trump Reauthorizes Funding For National Guard To Help States Fauci: Default Should Be To Try And Reopen Schools (Washington, DC) -- States are going to get more help from the National Guard with their coronavirus response. But, the federal government isn’t picking up the entire check anymore. President Trump extended the deployment of thousands of Guard members around the country through the end off 2020. The current authorization sees the feds covering all expenses, which expires August 21st. States will then need to pay for 25 percent of the costs after.
(Hartford, CT) -- Doctor Anthony Fauci [[ fow-CHEE ]] says the default position should be to reopen schools this fall. The nation’s top infectious disease expert joined Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont during a briefing on Monday. Fauci cited in-person learning offers a psychological benefit to children, who may also rely on school meals for proper nutrition. The top health official noted the health and safety of all children and staff should be priority number one. He added if transmission chances are low, reopening schools can work with measures like masks and social distancing.
World Health Organization Planning to Deploy Larger Team to Investigate the Origins of COVID-19 WHO Chief Says Likely No ‘Silver Bullet’ For COVID-19
(Geneva) -- The World Health Organization is deploying a larger investigative team to Wuhan, China to look into the origins of the coronavirus outbreak. W-H-O Director Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus [[ TED-rohs GEH-bree-ay-suhs ]] says “terms of reference” have been drawn up between the global health agency and the Chinese government. The W-H-O says there are “gaps in the epidemiological landscape,” adding that the proper studies and data need to be collected. The health agency wants to look at the first human cluster of cases that occurred and then work backwards to find where the animal-human species barrier was crossed.
WORLD-CLASS SPECIALTIES Close to home.
(Geneva) -- The head of the World Health Organization says it’s likely there’s no silver bullet for COVID-19 and there may never be one. The warning comes six months after the agency declared an international health emergency over the coronavirus. A half dozen experimental vaccines are now in phase three testing in the race to counter its spread. According to Johns Hopkins University, there are more than 18 million confirmed cases globally and nearly 700-thousand deaths since the virus first emerged in China late last year.

Bender Patricia Ludolph Bender was born in Marshall, Texas October 8, 1937 to Elizabeth Henrietta (Taylor) and Augustine Anthony Ludolph and left this earth in a blaze of Glory on August 1, 2020 at the age of 82.
One of her favorite hobbies was sewing and she was a great seamstress. She had sewn many bridesmaid’s dresses to include wedding dresses for her daughters. Later in life, she worked with the school district in the cafeteria and in the sewing department at Walmart. In the sewing department she offered her expertise and loved sharing her knowledge of sewing. She loved to laugh and always had a smile on her face. She absolutely loved to dance. After meeting our father, she was swept off her feet and they married six months later. She often reminded us of how wonderful a dancer he was, which was one of the many attributes that she loved about him. She had an abundance of unconditional love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Juana is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Janie (Gabriel) Garcia, Sandra (Robert) Carrillo, Josephine, Connie, and sons Miguel (Kathy) Gerard (Patricia); grandchildren, Nicole, Michael Jr., Robert John “R.J.”, Matthew, Joseph “Noel”, Kasandra “K.C.”, Joshua, Jordan, Jonathan, Chandler “Steven”, Stephanie; greatgrandchildren, Jeremiah, Savannah, Mykel, Marqus, Makai, Giuliana “Gigi”, Jionni, Josiah, Kyvin, and one on the way; She is survived by her brother Tony Medina (Sylvia), sisters, Tina Herrera (Alex), Stephanie Ozuna (Alex). She was also preceded in death by her first love, Tom Even, with whom she experienced young love and married in 1959. Tom gave Pat three beautiful children who survive her - Mark, Paul (Tina) and Libby (Dane) Even Ferrell. In 2011 she lost her husband of 18 years, Bill Bender, who shared with her his three children. Bill showed her the world, spoiled her, and took care of her so well. Pat loved Bill dearly and she grieved for him desperately. She is survived by her step-children Bill Bender, Debra (Michael) Seiler, and Richard (Michelle) Bender. Pat had so much to give and she gave it all for her children, and then her grandchildren: Chris (Katy), Derek (Kristina), Alan (Amy), Jason (Shay), Eric, Michelle (Murray) Bender Godfrey, Russell (Julie) Seiler, Austin and Shelby Bender. Stories will be told to her eight great-grandchildren. Pat taught her kids good manners and they felt the disgrace of “that look” from mom when they did wrong. She taught her kids to be respectful and to say Yes, ma’am and Yes sir.

She taught them the names of trees and how to shoot a bullfrog between the eyes with a .22 rifle from across the tank. So much wisdom she passed along. Pat grew up in Longview, Texas with her parents, four sisters Libby, Nancy, Dana, Cecile - and one brother, Buddy. Her momma was strict and didn’t take no lip. Patsy was both her Daddy’s little girl and a tomboy. She loved wearing a frilly girl’s dress as much as climbing the tallest pine tree. Pat graduated from Longview High School in 1956 then moved to San Antonio where she graduated from Incarnate Word College in 1960 with BS degree emphasizing Home Economics. After having 3 kids, moving to Seguin and freelancing for a bit as a home decorator, she began working for the Child Welfare Department in 1968. In July 1984 she obtained her Masters in Social Work degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. She retired after 27 years of working for the State of Texas, ultimately as the Operations Support Director for the Child Protective Services. She was appointed Hidalgo de San Antonio de Bexar for a lifetime of service to her community in 1980. In her younger days she was a champion basketball player, cheerleader, poet and later in life an award winning baker and the best mom on the planet. On her wall hangs so many awards and certificates, including the flag of the State of Texas, flown over the capitol in her honor. She was a member of Zonta International Club, Guadalupe County Republican Women, St. James Catholic Church Parishoner, and a member of the ACTS Retreats.
