(Austin) — Shoppers can save big on some back to school items as part of the state’s annual Sales Tax Weekend.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to continue practicing social distancing and support Texas businesses while saving money on taxfree purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual Tax-Free weekend. Qualifying items can be purchased tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy qualifying items tax free. This year’s sales tax holiday begins Friday,
Aug. 7, and goes through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9.
Online Purchases and Telephone Orders
The sales tax exemption applies only to qualifying items you buy during the sales tax holiday. Items you buy before or after the sales tax holiday do not qualify for exemption, and there is no tax refund available.
To promote social distancing, the Texas Comptroller’s office wants all taxpayers to know that during the TaxFree Weekend, you can buy qualifying items online or by telephone, mail, custom order or any other means (including

NCAA Division III Presidents Council cancels fall championships
Task Force as we attempt to shift our fall and winter sports schedules into the spring semester,” said SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. “As we said on our call, everything is written in pencil and, although we need to plan for what we know today, we also need to remain nimble if circumstances change.”
(Indianapolis) - The National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championships in fall sports for 2020-21 are canceled.
With the health and safety of the division’s student-athletes, coaches, athletics administrators and communities as its priority, the Division III Presidents Council made the decision Wednesday to cancel the championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related administrative and financial challenges.
TLU has four “winter” sports out of its 18 intercollegiate programs. The four winter sports at TLU are men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s indoor track & field.
The DIII Presidents Council’s decision affects the Texas Lutheran University sports of football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s cross country, and women’s volleyball. These sports will not have NCAA Division III National Championship possibilities in the 2020-21 academic year.
Two of those winter sports, men’s and women’s basketball, play in the SCAC. TLU’s women’s indoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field programs compete as independents. The SCAC does not sponsor men’s and women’s indoor track & field as conference sports.
“Looking at the health and safety challenges we face this fall during this unprecedented time, we had to make this tough decision to cancel championships for fall sports this academic year in the best interest of our student-athlete and member institutions,” said Tori Murden McClure, chair of the Presidents Council and president at Spalding. “Our Championships Committee reviewed the financial and logistical ramifications if Division III fall sports championships were conducted in the spring and found it was logistically untenable and financially prohibitive.”
indoor track & field. The spring sports TLU offers are: baseball, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field.
“Our Management Council reached the same conclusion. Moving forward, we will try to maximize the championships experience for our winter and spring sport student-athletes, who unfortunately were shortchanged last academic year.”
The Board of Governors also now will require all member institutions to apply the resocialization principles to fall sports and set a 50 percent sponsorship threshold for a fall sport championship to be conducted.
TLU and the two conferences (the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and the American Southwest Conference) in which it has membership are committed to holding fall sports seasons and conference championship opportunities in the spring semester of the 2020-21 academic year, even without national championship possibilities. Winter and spring sports for TLU would join the Bulldogs’ fall sports in contesting seasons in the spring semester of 2020-21. The winter sports at TLU include men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s
The NCAA Board of Governors directed each division (Division I, II, and III) to make a decision on its fall sport championships.
Prior to today’s NCAA DIII Presidents Council announcement, the SCAC Presidents Council announced on Monday that all NCAA competition within the conference is delayed until January due to ongoing health and safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The SCAC’s Presidents Council agreed to meet in September and October to reassess the landscape of college athletics to see if adjustments to the sports schedules should be considered. “(Monday’s) decision helps provide guidance to the league’s Scheduling
On July 16, the SCAC announced with its Presidents Council that NCAA intercollegiate competition would not occur during Fall 2020 due to health and safety concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The July 16 statement addressed the SCAC’s fall sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball and the sports of men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis that utilize the fall for non-traditional activities. Fifteen of TLU’s 18 intercollegiate sports programs play in the SCAC. Football plays in the American Southwest Conference, and again TLU’s men’s and women’s indoor track & field programs compete as independents. On July 22, Southwestern University and TLU, affiliate football members of the ASC, jointly announced that both universities were suspending their intercollegiate football competitive seasons for the fall of 2020 due to ongoing health and safety concerns arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. On July 24, the ASC’s Council of Presidents delayed conference-scheduled competition and championship events for fall championship sports with anticipation of resuming ASC competition and tournaments in spring 2021.

Novavax First Round COVID-19 Tests Shows Promising Results (Gaithersburg, MD) -- Novavax’s first round of a human COVID-19 vaccine trial is showing positive results. The company reported Tuesday that all of their trial volunteers developed antibodies for the coronavirus. The data from the study is now going to scientific journals to review before publishing. Six Governors Join Forces To Buy Three Million COVID Tests (Annapolis, MD) -- Six governors are uniting to buy three-million coronavirus tests to keep up with demand. Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia will all get 500-thousand each. Maryland’s governor created the new compact to show companies the need for more antigen tests, which can provide results in less than an hour. But there is concern the tests will miss infections since there’s a 15-percent chance of a false negative.

Bender
Pat grew up in Longview, Texas with her parents, four sisters - Libby, Nancy, Dana, Cecile - and one brother, Buddy. Her momma was strict and didn’t take no lip. Patsy was both her Daddy’s little girl and a tomboy. She loved wearing a frilly girl’s dress as much as climbing the tallest pine tree. Pat graduated from Longview High School in 1956 then moved to San Antonio where she graduated from Incarnate Word College in 1960 with BS degree emphasizing Home Economics.
Patricia Ludolph Bender was born in Marshall, Texas October 8, 1937 to Elizabeth Henrietta (Taylor) and Augustine Anthony Ludolph and left this earth in a blaze of Glory on August 1, 2020 at the age of 82. In reality, she passed peacefully in her sleep but she wanted that Blaze of Glory so we will indulge her this one last time. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Elizabeth “Libby” Ludolph Bond, and her daughter-in-law, Joyce Strey Even. She was also preceded in death by her first love, Tom Even, with whom she experienced young love and married in 1959. Tom gave Pat three beautiful children who survive her - Mark, Paul (Tina) and Libby (Dane) Even Ferrell. In 2011 she lost her husband of 18 years, Bill Bender, who shared with her his three children. Bill showed her the world, spoiled her, and took care of her so well. Pat loved Bill dearly and she grieved for him desperately. She is survived by her step-children Bill Bender, Debra (Michael) Seiler, and Richard (Michelle) Bender. Pat had so much to give and she gave it all for her children, and then her grandchildren: Chris (Katy), Derek (Kristina), Alan (Amy), Jason (Shay), Eric, Michelle (Murray) Bender Godfrey, Russell (Julie) Seiler, Austin and Shelby Bender. Stories will be told to her eight great-grandchildren. Pat taught her kids good manners and they felt the disgrace of “that look” from mom when they did wrong. She taught her kids to be respectful and to say Yes, ma’am and Yes sir. She taught them the names of trees and how to shoot a bullfrog between the eyes with a .22 rifle from across the tank. So much wisdom she passed along.
