Online contest has Seguin in the running for $75,000 worth of playground equipment

(Seguin) – This week is the beginning for Seguin residents, and other supporters, to vote for an effort that will give the city a chance to win $75,000, that will be used to help purchase new playground equipment for Max Starcke Park.

Max Starcke Park East has been selected as 1 of 9 park projects in the running for the money being made available through the 2023 Niagara Perk Your Park Campaign from Niagara Bottling’s charitable program, Niagara Cares. The Perk Your Park Campaign is the company’s initiative that focuses on park and community space revitalization across the country.

The Niagara online contest is also being conducted in partnership with the National

Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Jack Jones, Seguin Parks and Recreation Director, says with the community’s support and daily votes online, the city of Seguin has a chance to assist the rebuilding the beloved Kids Kingdom playground that was removed from the park this past spring due to safety issues.

“The competition is pretty stiff because it’s got Seguin. We are about 35,000 people and some of the cities that we are up against in this competition -- one is Ontario, California. That’s a big city. We are up against three cities in Texas – Lancaster, Texas I think is bigger than Seguin. Baytown, Texas I think is bigger. Missouri City is a little bigger I believe so we are ready to go with this campaign

to get people to use their devices this time instead of their hands to be involved in helping the city of Seguin to be one of the top three vote getters to be awarded this $75,000 grant that will help us to pay for this new playground to be installed,” said Jones.

Winning this grant Jones says will help the city construct an all-inclusive playground that will again sit next door to its current playground equipment. He says the plan is for the play structure to include four accessible play features for children with disabilities.

“With the new playground that is there now, we can put in things in this new playground that are not in the other playground.

Early registration set for today

(Seguin) -- Today is another opportunity to become part of a 40-year legacy in Seguin.

Registration is now underway for the 2023-2024 Ballet Folklórico De La Rosa and Mariachi Juan Seguin Program. Organizers say classes will fill up fast, so individuals are asked to take advantage of this last day for early registration.

Ballet Folklórico De La Rosa registers dancers ages 5 to 99 while the Mariachi Juan Seguin registers musicians 7 to 99. No previous experience necessary. Group officials say they pride themselves in welcoming anyone who want to learn about Mexican American culture, traditions, customs, knowledge, celebrations. Monthly tuition is $30. A $25 non-refundable registration fee will also be required during sign-up. Ballet Folklorico De

Vote, continued.

So, there is something there for every age group that is physically challenged so they can play with their friends on these new playgrounds and that’s the goal, we want everyone to play together,” said Jones.

The top three park projects to receive the most online votes will, again, win the $75,000.

Jones says online voting is easy and encourages every resident to vote each day until the contest deadline which is Sept. 18.

“I believe they are going by email address, you are able to log in and be able to go for one of the nine projects and we are very hopeful that everyone in Seguin and even outside of Seguin – you can be somewhere in Norway and vote for Seguin because it’s really a popularity contest to get the most votes, more support in a sense, the top three of the nine cities get awarded the grant. We need $500,000. We are still going to be a little bit short, but we have a grant opportunity that we are going to go for and if we need to, I imagine we can find some corporate partners out there down the road if needed to close the gap to get to get

Rosa Registration packets can be found at https://www. teatrodeartes.org/ballet-folklorico-de-la-rosa

Mariachi Juan Seguin Registration packets are also available at https://www.teatrodeartes.org/mariachijuan-seguin

Packets can be completed during registration or emailed to teatrodeartes@gmail.com. Registration will be held today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center located at 921 W. New Braunfels St.

“We did establish some funding last year of about $300,000 to start that replacement project for the playground area. This would be supplemental funding. To do everything we want to do, I know we are close to $500,000 in need so we will work on some funding during the budget, but this is also something that is also important because we can do more and more with this,” said Parker.

Jones adds, “the community of Seguin came together in 1995 to build the Kids Kingdom Playscape with their own hands. Today, we are asking residents to use their ‘fingers’ and vote daily in support of this grant effort.”

to that playground and plan on new pieces of equipment,” said Jones.

Jones says the overall price tag for the playground is estimated at $500,000. He says while the $75,000 is obviously not enough to cover it, the money on top of other funds secured by the city will definitely help speed up the process. ‘

City Manager Steve Parker says they have set aside some money, but every little bit helps the city give the kids in this community the playground that they deserve.

Residents wishing to begin their voting are asked to visit the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department Facebook page or city of Seguin website for the available link.

Mayor Donna Dodgen says they will continue to post about the vote on social media, and she says has a request for everyone during the voting period.

“So, vote and share! Vote and share for Seguin,” said Dodgen. The link is also available on the KWED Facebook page and on our website, seguintoday.com.

Teacher Incentive Allotment APPROVED by TEA

Local teachers to be awarded for classroom performance

(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD has gained approval for its Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) program by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

“The TIA program creates an avenue for recognized, exemplary and master teachers to be rewarded monetarily for continuous, highquality service toward student classroom learning. One of the benefits is the ability to attract and retain these highly effective educators. With teachers in short supply in Texas and nationally, we are hopeful that our best and brightest educators will continue to choose Seguin ISD,” said Dr. Matthew Gutierrez, Seguin ISD superintendent.

Approved by the Texas legislature under House Bill 3, the TIA provides a pathway to recognize and compensate highperforming teachers, especially those serving high-needs and rural schools. The potential to earn six figures is a possibility in the program.

“Seguin ISD completed a two-step application and approval process spanning three full school years. TEA evaluated the district throughout both stages to ensure statutory compliance, validity, and reliability. With the help of Texas Tech University, TEA will annually monitor Seguin ISD and all participating school districts through all phases of the program,” said Gutierrez.

Teachers may earn a designation under one of two pathways. One, created by the school district, allows the district to determine and issue the designation based on performance standards in the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) and

student growth outcomes. The second pathway is through the National Board Certification for Professional Teaching Standards.

Designations are in the form of distinctions that highly effective teachers can earn. Under the school district’s pathway, designations include recognized, exemplary, and master. Teachers with the National Board certification may automatically be designated as recognized directly by TEA.

In order to be designated a master teacher, the teacher must achieve an appraisal and student growth performance rate that places them among the top five percent of teachers statewide. The allotment is $12,000-$32,000.

An exemplary teacher’s appraisal and student growth performance places them in the top 20 percent in the state. The allotment is $6,000-$18,000.

The appraisal and student growth performance of a recognized teacher places them in the top 33 percent of teachers across the state. The allotment is $3,000-$9,000.

Designations are awarded for five years and noted on the teacher’s certificate. The amount of

funding a designated teacher earns will vary by campus based on their designation and the socioeconomic needs of the teacher’s campus.

The 2023-24 school year represents Phase 1 of the project in Seguin ISD. Teachers who are eligible to earn a distinction are those who teach Math 4-8 and Algebra 1 or Reading 4-8 and English I and II. In Phase 2 (2024-25 school year), eligible teachers include PK-12 who obtain a National Board Certification, PK-second grade self-contained classroom teachers and third grade and 5-12 grade STAAR tested core teachers. The 2025-26 school year marks Phase 3 when special education, career and technology education (CTE), fine arts and nontested core content teacher become eligible in the TIA program.

TEA statute requires that 90 percent of TIA funds be distributed directly to teachers and allow 10 percent of the funds to be used by the school district for administrative funds related to the TIA program. Seguin ISD will distribute generated funds to teachers who earn designations in one paycheck by Aug. 31, 2025.

Navarro tops Seguin in Paige Poth’s debut as Lady Panther volleyball coach

(Seguin) -- The Navarro Lady Panther volleyball team got an opening night win in the debut of new head coach Paige Poth on Monday night at Goldie Harris Gym.

Navarro (1-0) took down Seguin (0-1) in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.

The Lady Panthers were able to use their tall front line at the net to control much of the match. Sophomore Rylee Smith along with the sister combination of junior Morgan Helms and senior Taylor Helms were active both offensively and defensively on the night. The trio combined for a number of kills and drop shots.

Poth credited both Helms sisters and Smith along with their teammates for their effort in the victory.

“Taylor’s a big outside for us. She can change up the ball. She can be a big hit and pound the ball down or she can be a big tip and throw off their defense. She’s a great swing up there, very smart,” Poth said. “Our middles are a big presence and whenever they’re involved, it holds the defense’s middle so it opens up our pins. So, when you have Brooklyn (Fox) and Rylee up there holding the other middle that leaves Taylor and Kate Wozniak with a big gap. That’s good for our offense. They do a great job.”

For the Lady Matadors, junior setter Karina Lerma, senior outside hitter Keighly Dailey and freshman middle blocker Rebekah Wilke had strong games in defeat. Seguin will look to rebound later this week when they play in a tournament in Pearland starting on Thursday.

The Lady Panthers will be back in action today over at Navarro High School

for a couple of matches. Navarro will take on Victoria West and Pieper. The first match is set at 2 O’clock followed by their second match at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Marion Bulldog volleyball team will start their season tonight in Poteet. That match will start at 7 p.m. this evening at Poteet High School.

FDA Approves First Postpartum Depression Pill

(Washington, DC) -- The Food and Drug Administration is approving the first-ever pill for postpartum depression. On Friday, the FDA announced the medication is safe for women to take if they’ve recently had a baby and are now experiencing postpartum depression symptoms. In clinical trials, women who dealt with anxiety, depression, low energy, trouble sleeping, and guilt, had improved symptoms as early as three days after the first pill. The FDA is still considering whether to approve the pill for clinical depression as well.

Doctors Warn Against TikTok Trend Of Oil In Eyes

(Undated) -- Doctors are warning against using vegetable oil in eyes despite some folks on social media encouraging its use for eyes. There’s widely seen videos on TikTok showing people rubbing castor oil around their eyes and promoting it as a way to treat eye related issues. Doctors say it could cause an infection and recommend seeing an eye or vision specialist instead if having problems.

Texas AG Appeals Order To Relax Abortion Bans

(Austin, TX) -- The Texas Attorney General’s office is appealing a ruling that would have relaxed the state’s abortion ban. On Friday, a judge temporarily halted the abortion ban for women who have dangerous pregnancy complications. That ruling came from the judge’s concerns about the law’s vague language and how it might impact a doctor’s “good faith judgment.” A day later, the attorney general’s office filed an appeal that would disregard the judge’s ruling, and keep the current abortion ban in place. Until a final word from the Texas Supreme Court, Texas’ current abortion ban is still in full effect.

Regular Body Movement Helps Care for Our Brains

(Undated) -- As we age, our brain function diminishes, but there is a simple way to delay the wear and tear on the brain. Sharolyn Jackson with the Kansas State University Extension says moving your body is critical. She adds that physical activity reduces the production of stress hormones, increases the release of feel-good hormones, and helps us sleep better. Jackson says that movement doesn’t have to be strenuous to get the benefits. Just getting out of your chair and walking around every half hour can work wonders for your brain.
