Citizens urged to return census surveys

Some neighborhoods lag behind county, state averages respond and be counted. It’s really quick and it’s easy to do, especially right now when we are home social distancing,” said Sourdellia.

The Census Bureau has made it even easier for people to get signed up this year. Sourdellia says you can do it online, over the phone or by mail. She says it all takes just a few minutes. “This is the first year that the census (bureau) has done an online way to be counted. If you have a computer, and most people do, you can simply go online at mycensus2020.gov. You can fill it out there. It’s only ten questions. It takes, literally, five minutes or less to do it. Sourdellia says it’s important that every single household gets counted. She says the local response numbers are pretty good, but they need to get much better by the end of this count. “Right now the national selfresponse rate is sitting at about 62.8 percent. Texas is sitting at about 57.8 percent. And Guadalupe County’s self-response rate currently is 66.2 (percent). Now in Seguin, our selfresponse rate is sitting at about 61 percent. We can do better than that. I know we can do way better than that. So let’s get those numbers up. We especially need residents in neighborhoods west of North Guadalupe Street to respond. That’s kind of an area where we are having some trouble getting people to respond. I do want to mention that census takers will follow up with non-responding households. They are going to start knocking on doors if you haven’t responded yet,” said Sourdellia. See CENSUS, page 3

Community members encouraged to continue efforts to combat coronavirus By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The mask wearing, social distancing and hand cleaning appear to be having a positive effect here in Seguin and Guadalupe County. Seguin City Manager Steve Parker says many of the COVID-19 trends have been going down, and that’s good news as the community continues its fight against the spread of the virus. Parker made the announcement during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin City Council. “The message here tonight is whatever Seguin is doing -- the trend is what we had hoped with the masks being

implemented. The fact is the numbers are tending better. We have a weekly update with the hospital and after to talking with them (Tuesday) afternoon, those trends continue to move in a positive direction,” said Parker. The positive case count and death rate do continue to grow, but it’s been harder to stay on top of these numbers, because of the backlog that was being experienced by the Texas Department of State Health Services. However, Parker says TDSHS has changed how it processes those numbers, in an attempt to get the best information out to the community.

cases in the county, and currently today, there were 14 hospitalized at GRMC. That number had been as many as over 40 at one time. The Guadalupe Regional Medical Center reported 31 deaths at their hopsital. The state is showing 44 in Guadalupe County. The county “We are at 236 active (emergency management office)

website for a couple of days now,” said Parker. The hospitalization rate has also been coming down at GRMC. Parker says the hospital had more than 40 COVID-19 patients at one point this summer. He says that number has come down significantly over the last few weeks.

It’s just a delay in getting out the information related to where those deaths are -whether in Seguin, Schertz, (and) so forth. So there should be a catch up (in the numbers). But they’ve been reporting 44 on the (state’s)

“We’ve been really trying to monitor (the numbers). We’ve talked about the consistency of the information. We are really trying to monitor how the hospital fairing. Looking at the sevenday rolling averages (of hospitalizations) is sort of what we have been tracking. At one point and time, they were seeing seven or eight

new patients a day, or a seven-day rolling average. There are down to three patients (per day) on the seven day rolling average, and 19 patients overall on the sevenday rolling average for COVID patients. So overall, it’s positive news there,” said Parker. Parker has been providing consistent updates to the council and to the community since the outbreak started back in the spring. He says what we are doing is having a positive impact, and people need to continue to wear their masks when they go out, practice social distancing, and make sure that the clean their hands often.

CENSUS, continued from page 1 The census count matters. It doesn’t just tell you how many people live here, but Sourdellia says it means much more than that. She says it helps to tell the community’s overall story, and it also opens up a number of resources to support the people of Seguin and Guadalupe County. “We are growing by leapsand-bounds. We are going to growing, within the next five to ten years, exponentially. We’ve got tons of new neighborhoods coming in,” said Sourdellia. “You may wonder -- ‘why respond?’Well, it’s our civic duty, and it’s important because we could lose out on the distribution of a lot of federal funds, grants and support. We could possibly lose out on (funds). There’s about $675 billion in federal funds that are given out to support states and counties, such as ours, and communities. All of that is based on census data. That money is spent on schools, hospitals,

Using a computer, tablet or cell phone may be the easy way to responded to the census questionnaire this year. You can also respond via mail or by telephone. roads, public works and so many other vital programs in our community. So it’s super, super important to respond.” The pandemic has caused important dates to be moved all around during the census count. The U.S. Census Bureau announced this week that it is moving up the deadline for

responding to the census by a month, from October 31st to September 30th. The October deadline had given organizers time to deal with disruptions to the count caused by the pandemic. The cutoff change comes at a time when the bureau is going door-to-door to follow up with households

that haven’t filled out the census questionnaire yet. Canvassers claim the earlier deadline increases the risk that the population of Texas will be under-counted, which is one of the reasons why it’s important to voluntarily turn in those questionnaire forms now -- if you can.

Navarro stretched the margin to 17 points in the fourth quarter, and the Pirates never posed a serious threat from that point. “I think we got them tired, because they have some athletes and some fast girls there, but they looked like, even after the first quarter, that they were starting to get gassed a little bit,” Harborth said. “We were able to, I think wear them down there, were I think our speed did look like it was taking effect.” The win was Navarro’s 11th straight. That streak came to an end five days later in a heart-breaking 56-55 loss to West Oso in the regional quarterfinals. The victory was also the 499th in Harborth’s head coaching career, leaving him just one away from 500. Navarro finished with an overall record of 27-11 and won the outright District 304A championship with three freshmen, a junior, and only one senior in the starting lineup. Given what was at stake and the quality of the competition, the area round playoff win over Sinton ranks as the 2020 Panthers’ best moment of the season.

COVID Outbreak Ship Won’t Sail To Asia Until 2022

Trump Tweets After Stimulus Talks Break Down

(Santa Clarita, CA) -- The first cruise ship to have a coronavirus outbreak is staying away from Asia. All sailings have been canceled through April of 2022. Diamond Princess will instead be redeployed to a new destination. The ship was quarantined in Japan back in February with nearly 700 cases on board. Most major cruise lines have suspended service through October.

(Undated) -- President Trump is taking a swipe at Democratic leaders after talks over a stimulus package broke down. On Twitter, Trump claimed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer were only “interested in bailout money for poorly run Democrat cities and states.” He noted the one-trillion dollars they asked for and argued it had nothing to do with the coronavirus. Administration officials have said Trump was looking at taking executive action if a deal couldn’t be reached.

Trump To Extend Unemployment Benefits, Defer Payroll Tax (Bedminster, NJ) -- President Trump is promising to provide coronavirus relief. He plans to use executive action to extend extra unemployment benefits to the end of the year. Trump didn’t reveal how much it would be. Democrats wants it to remain 600-dollars a week but Republicans have suggested 200. Trump also says he’ll defer payroll tax until January if no deal on a new bill is reached. Students loans will be on hold as well and renters will be given more time to avoid eviction.

Dentists Treating ‘Mask Mouth’ With Bad Breath (Undated) -- It seems masking up is coming with a side effect of bad breath. Dentists say they’re treating a new set of symptoms like decaying teeth, receding gum lines and seriously sour breath. They’ve dubbed it “mask mouth.” Patients who’ve never had cavities are getting them for the first time. That’s because breathing through the mouth with a mask on increases the dryness and buildup of bad bacteria. The solution? Dentists say to breathe through your nose.
