Guadalupe County unveils news Veterans Outreach Center
(Seguin) – If you want to know what veterans think about the new Guadalupe County Veterans Outreach Center, then just ask 12th Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps Gene Overstreet. Overstreet, a resident of Guadalupe County, served as the guest speaker during Wednesday’s grand opening of the new service center located at 205 E. Weinert Street.
Ribbon cutting ceremonies and a tour of the facility were part of the opening celebration for the center which will serve as a one stop shop for veterans.
Overstreet says there’s no better gift to veterans than this one-of-a-kind center that brings a huge menu of services to them locally.
“If you look at America today, the propensity to serve is almost down to seven percent and if you look at the people that are qualified to serve, that’s down. Only about 17 percent of America can serve today because
if you look at the age group that we are looking at, if you take out the kids that have been in trouble with the law, the kids that have been on drugs, the kids that can’t pass a test, illiteracy, kids that failed out of high school – things like that – the military now, we only take high school graduates. That’s at starting and you have to pass a drug test and we have more veterans here in Guadalupe County than Hays County has, and Comal County has so this is a very patriotic county right here and we need to keep that going. I think this is one of the ways to keep it going because the young kids will see ‘Okay, look at that. They are taking care of those veterans. They are taking care of those who went to serve and with the menu of services that they offer here, what a great collage of bringing them all together. Now, we can go to one place and get just about anything you need,” said Overstreet. VOC, pg. 3

Seguin ISD campuses to host Meet the Teacher tonight
(Seguin) – Seguin ISD students will get the chance to step on campus today before next week’s first day of school. Today marks Meet the Teacher or schedule pick up day for local schools.
Elementary schools will welcome students and their families today from 3 to 6 p.m. Children are encouraged to bring their school supplies, tour their schools, and meet their teachers for the upcoming school year.
A.J. Briesemeister Middle School 7th and 8th graders are encouraged to pick up their schedules today from 4 to 6 p.m. Due to ongoing construction, today’s events will simply be limited to picking up schedules. Students in athletics, however, are asked to attend a meeting with coaches at 5 p.m. in the gym. Sixth graders were treated
to their own Meet the Teacher and tour of the campus Wednesday night.
Jim Barnes Middle School students will host its Meet the Teacher for 6th through 8th graders today from 4 to 6 p.m. While any grade can come at any time, school officials are hoping to alleviate the crowds by asking that the first hour be utilized for sixth graders if at all possible.

Specific information of events happening in preparation for the first day of school is available on each school’s respective website or social media page.

VOC, continued.
The center started simply with a vision in 2017. Since then, county officials say they have worked steadily to keep the project a priority although they say sometimes it was rough. Guadalupe County Commissioner Greg Seidenberger says despite the challenges of finding the necessary resources to create this project, he credits Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher for his dedication and his willingness to never let go of this vision that has been supported fully by members of the commissioners’ court including former Commissioners Jim Wolverton and Judy Cope.
It is said that the new veterans center will serve as the blueprint for other similar projects throughout the state.
However, what perhaps makes the construction even more significant for the community is the history behind the building which once served as the city’s old hospital. Overstreet says the history alone includes a pair of American heroes.
“This happened in 1946. Right after World War II, there were two army nurses, both veterans that got together and said, ‘we have no hospital here in Seguin.’ I’m sure there was a lot of people coming back from World War II that had PTSD. We didn’t call it that then. We didn’t know what it was. We called it Soldiers Heart. We called it shell shock. We called it a bunch of other stuff but basically it was PTSD, but we just didn’t have a clinical name to put to it. So, those nurses recognized that and for
the rest of the community, we needed a hospital here for the general community. It was a 26-bed facility but boy, that was 26 beds better and more than we had before and you’ve got to start someplace, and they started someplace. It’s amazing now 80 years later, it goes full circle, and it comes back to a veteran’s center here. How cool is that? said Overstreet.
Initiating this now full circle of events in 1967, were Veterans Sarah Hazard and Dorothea Siepmann – again both recognized for starting a hospital in Seguin.
Among the services to be provided to veterans in this new center are legal, financial, fitness and nutrition, VA mortgage, Medicare/insurance, equine therapy, recreational therapy, amputee-inclusive therapy, surviving spouse group, women veterans and veterans’ brunch. Although there will not be a VA Health Clinic at this time, county officials say representatives from the VA Health Clinic will be made available.
Not only will the center serve as a location for resources but also as a gathering place for veterans to spend their time. Equipped with an outside patio and grilling space, veterans are invited to simply stop by and enjoy a cup of coffee, sit outside, or walk around a shaded trail.
Informational sessions will also be provided for ongoing education as well as to keep veterans involved. Planned social activities are also expected to help fill up the local calendar.
The new center can be reached by calling 830-3034188 ext. 1249 or by emailing voc@co.guadalupe.tx.us.

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Athletic Hall of Fame will feature three new Bulldog legends inducted this October representing three different sports, along with an addition to the Leadership Wall of Honor. The TLU Athletics Hall of Fame is an elite group of alumni and coaches who demonstrated outstanding performance and achievement in athletic competition while representing Texas Lutheran University.
All three members of the 2023 Class are 2013 graduates that hail from women’s track and field, football, and baseball. For the third time in four seasons, Texas Lutheran Baseball will have an inductee.
The newest members of the Texas Lutheran Athletics Hall of Fame are former TLU pole vaulter Ligia Bolivar ‘13, former TLU kicker Allen Cain ‘13, and former TLU baseball player Sean Kistler ‘13. They will be joined in the class by former TLU women’s basketball coach Lana Urbanek - who will be enshrined in the TLU Athletics Leadership Wall of Honor.
The Class of 2023 will be honored in a ceremony on campus Saturday, October 21, 2023, and will be honored at halftime of the Homecoming football game between the Bulldogs and East Texas Baptist University. Kickoff is set for 4 PM.
Ligia Bolivar, a two-time All-American and three-time American Southwest Conference champion in the pole vault at TLU, qualified for six total NCAA Division III National Championship meets – all in the pole vault. Bolivar competed in three indoor national championships and three outdoor national championships in her career earning NCAA Division III All-American status at the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. She finished sixth overall at the 2011 championships with a clearance of 11 feet, 11.25 inches and eighth at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships, with a clearance of 12 feet, 2.75 inches. She also finished ninth at the 2011 NCAA DIII Indoor Championship and 10th at the 2012 NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships while finishing in the top 15 in 2010 and 2012’s NCAA Indoor Championships. Over the course of her career, Bolivar accumulated 14 meet wins in the pole vault during her career.
In addition to her four conference title wins, she won meets at Texas Tech, Incarnate Word, Central Missouri, and Trinity. The lone year (her freshman year) in which she did not win the conference title, she was the conference runner-up. In addition to her 14 career pole vault wins, she finished second 13 times at meets. She finished in the top three at a meet on 33 occasions. She was a member of four American Southwest Conference women’s team championships at TLU, was a three-time All-ASC award winner, and was a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference honoree.
Allen Cain, a four-year starter at place-kicker for TLU, received seven different All-America playing awards in his career with the Bulldogs. Cain was named a D3football.com First Team All-American his junior and senior seasons, while also earning All-America honors from The Associated Press (AP Little All-America) and Beyond Sports College Network as a senior. In 2011, Cain earned All-America honors from the American Football Coaches
Association, The Associated Press, D3football.com and Beyond Sports College Network. The 2012-13 TLU Co-Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Cain is the all-time leader in field goals made for TLU and ended his career as the leader for the American Southwest Conference, now ranking second all-time. Cain kicked 17 field goals in 2012 - bringing his career field goal total to 43. Cain made 34 field goals in his junior and senior seasons alone. Cain still holds the American Southwest Conference and TLU records for most points scored by kicking in a game (19), most field goals in a game (5, twice), highest made field goal percentage in a game with at least four attempts (1.000, twice, 5-for-5 twice). Cain held the ASC career field goal record for 10 seasons.
Cain was also a two-time First Team Academic All-American, holding the honor as the first TLU student-athlete to be named a First Team Academic AllAmerican twice. Cain concluded his career by kicking in the D3 Senior Classic in Salem, Virgina, kicking an extra-point and a 46-yard field goal in the South’s 3721 win over the North. Cain was a two-time finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award - awarded to the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA place-kicker that best excels on the football field and in the community - and was named the 2012 ASC Special Teams Player of the Year and was named to the 2012 ASC Outstanding Sportsmen Team of the Year.
Sean Kistler, was a two-time All-American and one of the top closers in all of NCAA Division III in his last two seasons for the Bulldogs. Kistler set the TLU and ASC records for career saves (22) and is still the current record-holder for TLU for career (22) and single-season saves (14) while still holding the ASC record for career saves.
Kistler dominated on the mound - not allowing a run (earned or unearned) in 2013 and did not allow a run in the final 39 innings of his career with a scoreless inning streak that stretched from April 6, 2012 to the final game of his career, May 16, 2013 – in which he pitched two scoreless innings against No. 8 California Lutheran in the NCAA West Regional Tournament. Kistler pitched 29-1/3 innings in 2013 with an ERA of 0.00, recording 14 saves with 33 strikeouts and only 14 hits allowed in an ASC leading 21 appearances. Kistler was an integral part of a 2013 pitching staff that led the ASC in ERA (3.05) and in strikeouts (317) and a 2013 TLU squad that made a run to the 2013 NCAA Division-III West Regional Tournament. His 2013 performance saw him finish in the top three in the 2012-13 American Southwest Conference Male Athlete of the Year voting that season.
Kistler was named ABCA All-West Region First Team, the ABCA AllAmerica Third Team, and the D3baseball.com All-West Region Second Team honoree while also earning All-America honors for his 2012 and 2013 seasons respectively. Red Cross Implements New FDA Guidance On Allowing Gay Men To Donate Blood
(New York, NY) -- The Red Cross is implementing the FDA’s updated guidance on allowing men who have sex with men to donate blood. The American Red Cross says it’s “welcoming more donors” and getting rid of restrictions based on sexual orientation. The FDA issued the new guidance in May, recommending “individual risk-based questions” for anyone donating blood, regardless of their gender, sex or sexual orientation. Before, FDA restrictions stopped men who have sex with men from donating blood unless they abstained from sex for three months before..
COVID-19 Hospitalizations Continue To Rise For Two Weeks
(Atlanta, GA) -- COVID-19 hospitalizations in the U.S. are on the rise for the second week in a row. According to the CDC, the number of people being hospitalized for the virus surged more than 12-percent. But in nearly half of the U.S. states, the spike is much higher - many states across the country say more than a 20-percent increase. New Hampshire had the biggest in a single week at 96-percent, almost doubling the previous week’s number.
Obesity Drug Could Cut Risk Of Heart Attack Or Stroke
(Plainsboro, NJ) -- An obesity drug called Wegovy could cut the risk of cardiovascular emergencies, like heart attack and stroke, by 20-percent. Drug maker Novo Nordisk hasn’t released the full findings of its trial, but says results are the first to demonstrate that a weight-loss drug has medical benefits. If the study holds up, it could be compelling enough to get insurance companies to provide coverage for the medication that costs 13-hundred dollars for a monthly supply. The findings were based on more than 17-thousand overweight or obese adults ages 45 and older.
Telemedicine Advocates Praise DEA For Looking Into Relaxed Prescription Rules
(Washington, DC) -- Advocates for telemedicine are praising the DEA for potentially relaxing rules on allowing controlled substances to be prescribed virtually. The Drug Enforcement Agency said Friday that it’s open to starting a special registration process to allow providers to make prescriptions to patients without ever needing them to have an in-person medical evaluation. The DEA is holding a listening session next month for the public to discuss the issue. A telehealth lobbying group said it supports the move and said it would work to “represent the voices of the telehealth community.”
