Former council member files for mayoral race Donna Dodgen says she has experience, vision to lead By Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- A former member of the Seguin City Council says she wants to make a difference, she wants to strengthen the community and she wants build upon some of the good things already happening in the community. Donna Dodgen has officially filed to run for mayor of the city of Seguin during the Tuesday, November 3 general election. Dodgen says she wants to continue to serve the citizens of Seguin, and continue to move Seguin in the right direction.

Dodgen says there are some positive things happening in Seguin, but she says it’s important that we build upon those to make this an even better place to work and to call home. Dodgen says there are several things that she would like to do if she is elected. She preparing and planning for our future will be key to the city’s success.

“I want to continue on the path -- the positive path that we are going (in). We are doing a great job. We are moving. There are lots of changes occurring. And I want to be a part of that,” said Dodgen.

“I want to continue on that positive path. But I want to make sure that we have our master plan and our downtown plan, and our development needs all in place. That does continue what’s being done, but I also want to continue to build on that. I want to continue to strengthen our downtown and our businesses, along with our manufacturing. In a sense, it is continuing the same, but it’s building upon it and growing. I really want us to communicate, educate and be transparent and listen,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen served on the city council from 2012 to 2018. Dodgen is a former downtown business owner, and she says she’s also been very active in the community for nearly 30 years. She says all of that helps to make her uniquely qualified to lead this community.

Dodgen will face local resident Frank L. Herrera in the mayoral race. Herrera announced his candidacy in a one line email to KWED/Seguin Daily News over the weekend. We will have more on his candidacy soon.

“I have experience. I I know I can make a difference. I’ve done that already in the times that I served. I have experience in boards and in lots of things downtown. I’ve been involved in the community for 27 years. I wanted to get to know it, and I have. I listen. I just think that I have a broad view to bring to our city,” said Dodgen.

There are also four seats council seats that will appear on the November ballot. There will be, at least three new faces on the council, because District 6 Councilwoman Fonda Mathis, District 2 Councilwoman Jet Crabb, District 1 Councilman Ernest Leal and current Mayor Don Keil are

no longer eligible to run, because of the city’s eight-year term limit.

The District 6 race will feature Monica Napier-Carter and Wanda Rosales. It’s the only contested council race thus far. Councilman Chris Rangel has filed for reelection to his District 4 seat. In District 2, Pete Silvius is the only candidate to have filed for that position. And in District 1, no one has yet announced their plans to run for that seat. In order to serve in the city of Seguin candidates: - Shall be a resident citizen of the City of Seguin - Be 21 years of age or older - Qualified voter of the State of Texas - Mayor shall have been a resident citizen of the City of Seguin for a period of not less than twelve (12) months immediately prior to election day - Council Members shall be a resident citizen of the City of Seguin and the district from which he or she is elected for a period of not less than six (6) months immediately prior to election day The deadline to file for the mayor’s race or for any of the four available council seats is 5 p.m., Monday, August 17. Individuals interested in running for one of the available positions can pick up an application packet at Seguin City Hall.

TUESDAY AUGUST 11, 2020

The free service is available to city of Seguin residents By Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- It’s now easier for you to get rid of some toxic items that you might have stored at home. The city of Seguin is once again offering a free hazardous waste service to its citizens.

“First of all, you’ve got to be a city of Seguin resident -living in the city limits. To arrange a collection at your doorstep -- literally they will pick it up on your porch or on your doorstep -- it’s as easy as making a toll-free call. That number is 1-800-449-7587. Pickups can also be scheduled online through Waste Management’s website. All you have

list also includes things like sharps, electronic waste, and automotive products. These are all things that should not be included in your normal trash pickup.

to do is go to www.wmatyourdoor.com/residential. Within about three to five days, residents will receive a collection kit in the mail, and that will include instructions on how to get your collection secured for pickup. After that, items will be picked up within about two to three weeks directly from your doorstep. I want to remind residents, please do not place these items at the curb. We don’t want these items to be picked up as trash,” said Sourdellia.

The free service is being offered to city residents thanks to a grant that it received from the Alamo Area Council of Governments. The service is available on a first come, first served basis, and once the grant funds run out, the program will end.

Seguin Public Information Officer Jennifer Sourdellia says the program is designed to help you toss out a number of unwanted products, including paint, household chemicals, pesticides, televisions and more. “Most households accumulate household hazardous wate over time. I know I do. I’ve got old paint that’s sitting in my garage, and it has for a while. So if you have old paint, motor oil, pesticides, chemicals, cleaning products, etc...those shouldn’t be thrown into the trash. This is a great program for citizens to take advantage of. For the first time since we’ve offered this program -- which we’ve been doing for several years -- we are going to include electronics in this collection. So if you have an old television, cellphone, printer, electrical cord, the list goes on -those are being accepted for the first time this year,” said Sourdellia. Sourdellia says they will come right to your door to pick up the items, and she says it’s easy to get signed up for the free service.

There are a long list of items that can be picked up as part of the hazardous waste collection program. That

“For a complete list of accepted items, all you have to do is visit wmatyourdoor.com, or you can call that call center that you are calling to schedule a collection. They can help you out with that too, if you have questions. Again, that number is 1-800449-7587. We have a ton of information available on the city’s website at https:// bit.ly/SeguinHHW. There will also be a huge list of items that will not be collected through this program. So that you know what not to put into your bag whenever you receive your kits,” said Sourdellia.

For a complete list of accepted items, or to arrange a collection, call 1-800-449-7587, or visit wmatyourdoor.com/residential. Collection times may vary, but again the items will be picked up from your doorstep.

Navarro, Marion volleyball open 2020 seasons with new head coaches (Guadalupe County) - The first regular season high school athletic events in the area since early March usher in the 202021 school year Tuesday night when the Navarro and Marion volleyball teams open their seasons with matches on their respective home courts.

On Blakeman’s watch, the Panthers won a district championship and advanced five playoff rounds to the 4A Region IV finals in 2017, then finished second in district and advanced four rounds to the regional semifinals in each of the next two seasons.

Each program will have a new head coach on the sidelines this fall.

Voigt inherits a talented nucleus of varsity veterans in 2020.

Navarro hired coaching veteran Bernice Voigt to replace Nicole Blakeman this past off-season.

Navarro only lost three seniors to graduation off the 2019 team, albeit a very accomplished group that included All-State outside hitter Kelly Helms, All-District libero Carolyn Burch, and Honorable Mention setter Sam Smith.

Voigt’s previous head coaching stops include Marion and Gonzales, and she worked most recently as a teacher and assistant coach at Wagner High School in San Antonio. Voigt won multiple district championships in Marion, and led the Bulldogs to a berth in the 2A Region IV finals in 2011. Blakeman left Navarro after three successful seasons to become the head volleyball coach at Bellaire High School in Houston.

The Panthers’ All-District returnees include setter Sara Benner, middle blocker Maddie McCaig, and fellow incoming seniors Nelly Brumley, Haley Hoffmann, and Ashley Gosch. Navarro’s season opening match against Bandera is slated for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Navarro Events Center in Geronimo. See HEAD COACHES, pages 5

Melissa Mitchell is Marion’s fourth head volleyball coach in four seasons.

Marion returnees who earned AllDistrict recognition a year ago include libero Haylee Mabee (Dist. Newcomer of the Year), setter Madison Doss, and defensive specialists Lily Bek and Ingrid Nava.

Mitchell replaces Taylor Creamer, who filled the girls basketball vacancy at MHS after Kollyn McWhinney stepped down to take a similar position in Lovelady over the summer. California Public Health Director Resigns

(Baltimore, MD) -- There are now more than 19-million confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide since the pandemic began last December. Johns Hopkins University researchers say the U.S. accounts for close to five-million of those cases. There’ve been more than seven-hundred-thousand deaths worldwide but more than 11-and-a-half million people have recovered. The U.S. leads the world in infections, followed by Brazil, India, Russia and South Africa.

(Sacramento, CA) -- California’s public health director has resigned. Dr. Sonia Angell [[ Angel ]] announced her immediate resignation in an email to her staff late Sunday night. She’s yet to give a reason. Last week, officials discovered a glitch in the state’s COVID-19 data system that led to delayed information and under-reporting of new cases throughout the state. Sandra Shewry, Vice President of the California Health Care Foundation, is being appointed to acting California Department of Public Health Director.

Another New Grim Milestone In America

Nash John McElyea Nash, III passed away August 8, 2020 at the age of 70 in Seguin, Texas. John is survived by his loving wife of 37 glorious years, Teri MyCue Nash; his children John Nash, IV and wife, Laura; Amy Nash Dahlke and husband, Robert; Andy Nash and wife, Rebecca; Amanda Nash Robbins and husband, Bailey; grandchildren Emily and Tilden Nash; Jacob and Jade Dahlke; Casen, Whitley, and Elliot Grace Nash; and Baby Robbins expected in February. He was also survived by his sisters Naomi Nash Drummond and husband, Chuck; Martha Nash Bartlett and husband, Marty; sister-inlaw, Karen Gordon; step-mother, Connie Naugher Nash; Sue Hodges and husband, A. G., mother of John and Amy; sisters-in-law Judy Johnson and Merry Douberly and husband, Ed; brothers-in-law Jerry MyCue and wife, Carol; Scotty MyCue and wife, Jacque; numerous nieces and nephews; loving family members, and a plethora of loving friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Polly Nash, sister Polly Anne Nash, his brother Kenneth Andrew Nash, inlaws Roger and Arline MyCue; brothers-in-law Jimmie Johnson and Dick MyCue. John was born on August 17, 1949 in Berkeley, California to John

Nash, Jr. and Pauline Fawcus Nash. The family relocated to St. Louis, Missouri in the early 1960’s fueling John with a love for baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals. He later graduated from Lindbergh High School in 1967 and began classes at Central Methodist College. This is when John realized that school was getting in the way of his education and as he explained it, “I was working at the restaurant too much to go to class. I was a terrible student.” Perkins Pancake House in the St. Louis area, as well as the U.S. Navy/ Marine Corps Medic, kept him busy until 1978 when he moved to the Seguin area to help his parents manage the Greenery Station Restaurant off of State Highway 123. John didn’t like things not done so he finished college as a wellseasoned, non-traditional student in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree from Texas Lutheran University. Through the years, John kept his community fed by owning and operating several other restaurants in the Seguin area: Depot Cafe, River Shadows, Walnut Creek Diner, and Johnny Mac’s Bar and Grill. His ability to mentor the young minds is something that always seems to come up in conversation when speaking to others about John Nash. He loved telling stories, fishing and hunting with his family, managing his longhorns, talking to friends, and talking to strangers that would often become friends. It was known throughout that you better have some spare time if you ran into John. He loved family vacations to Angel Fire, NM, Lake Amistad in Del

Rio, TX, and the Texas coast. He often bragged about his kids and grandkids as “champions--every one of them.” To fulfill his faith, he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Seguin, serving as chief lawn man. To support his community, he was involved in the Geronimo Lions Club serving many offices (including the Lion King) as well as managing the First Friday Feasts each month. To continue his patriotic duty, he served as a boat captain at the annual Warriors’ Weekend in Port O’Connor, TX. John’s cremated remains will be enniched, in a private service, in the Columbarium at Knolle Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Seguin with the Rev. Cathe Evins officiating. A public celebration of his life is being planned at a later date. John based his life on his faith, his family, and his friends. To quote John Wayne, his hero, “I’ve tried to live my life so that my family would love me and my friends respect me. The others can do whatever the hell they please.” That was you, John Nash. You were an icon to many. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to First United Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin, Seguin, Texas or the Geronimo Lions Club Scholarship Fund, 135 Oak Springs Drive, Seguin, Texas, 78155. You are encouraged to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
