GVEC, Vitesco, Big Sun Solar landmark solar project in Seguin
(Seguin) -- A pioneering partnership in Seguin has officially unveiled the blueprint for the future and how things will operate when it comes to energy production and consumption.
A major solar project has been announced and developed in a partnership between global automotive supplier Vitesco Technologies, San Antonio-based Big Sun Solar and the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC).
This energy agreement is said to be one of the first three-party power purchase agreements in Texas.
The agreement calls for the solar project to be built on 12 acres adjacent to the Vitesco Technologies manufacturing facility supporting the company’s role as a leading international supplier of modern drive systems and electrification solutions for sustainable mobility.
Big Sun Solar will build, own, and operate the solar project, and Vitesco Technologies will purchase from GVEC the electricity generated to offset its energy consumption.
Sean Alvarez, GVEC chief operating officer, says that as a cooperative, they are excited about helping their customers reach their sustainability goals.
“Our obligation is to serve power to the consumer, right? They are our members. They are
our owners. It’s our objective always to help them meet their goals and whether or not, those goals are reliability and power or whether or not it’s renewables and implementation of renewables, we want to be that trusted partner for our members. That’s what makes this opportunity unique. I mean, they have some internal goals that they had set as a company in order to become more renewable or more green across their entire portfolio of products not just their power consumption needs. But this
goes all the way across the platform or even people who they do business with and pieces and parts and materials that they manufacture and so, we are here helping them as they transition towards their goal of being more renewable or a better a better steward to the environment – that gap between us being just a normal power provider or us working with them on alternative solutions that help them achieve their environmental, social and government goals that they have in place,” said Alvarez. Seguin ISD tweaks its Middle School Redesign concept
Academic focus remains on local middle schools
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD says it doesn’t plan to ease up on its continued focus of its two middle schools.
This past year, the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees committed to hearing monthly updates from both A.J. Briesemeister and Jim Barnes Middle Schools. A couple of years ago, the district committed to a redesign of the schools’ curriculum and schedule as it worked to improve the academic success at both of those campuses which in the past hadn’t faired so well.
However, this upcoming year will mark year three for the implementation of the Texas
Education Agency’s System of Great Schools -- Middle School Redesign. The program not only included a high-dosage of tutoring and social emotional wellbeing but included Extending Learning Time and FlexFridays which took on a whole different look when compared to a student’s Monday through Thursday schedule.
Although there will still be FlexFridays, there will be a change that families can come to expect.

Seguin plans for the COOLEST birthday party tonight
(Seguin) -- The Texas heat isn’t going to stop Seguin from celebrating its 185th birthday. That’s because the Texas Theatre will be helping to cool things down by allowing the Seguin Conservation Society to host tonight's (Aug.11) birthday celebration indoors.
Traditionally, the event is hosted outside the First Church and Hoermann Log Cabin in the Heritage Village located at 211 E. Live Oak St.
Seguin Conservation Society President Marty Keil, says although the location has changed, all the great traditional birthday events are still on as scheduled.
"The hottest funnest birthday party of the year is now going to be the coolest birthday party of the year at the Texas Theatre but we will have the same programs as usual with Kirk Herbold as Friends being our entertainment for the evening. We will still have a rider from the Guadalupe County Sheriff Posse arrive with a proclamation about 6:15 p.m. and there's going to be a lone rider this year just bringing the proclamation to the front of the theatre where the mayor will receive it and then all of the program therefore will be taking place in the main auditorium of the theatre," said Keil.
Keil says the meal and of course the ice cream contest are also still on tap for tonight.
"Our homemade ice cream contest is still going to take place and that will be in the Chandelier Room of the theatre and the catered meal by Next Door Catering will be plated there in the Chandelier Room. We will have
meals to go and if you drive north on Austin Street, you can pull up right up in front of the theatre and we will have a tent up and we can bring a meal to your car," said Keil.
BBQ tickets are $15 pre-sale and can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet, Keepers, the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce or from any board member. Plate tickets at the event will be $20.
Entries for the homemade ice cream are still be accepted and should arrive by 4:30 p.m. Categories include Best Homemade Vanilla, Best Pecan, Best NonVanilla and People’s Choice. Entries will not be accepted if they contain raw eggs. Winners will be announced at 7 p.m.
The birthday celebration runs today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Texas Theatre located at 425 N. Austin St.

On your marks, ready, shop!
Tax Free Weekend now underway
(Seguin) – Get ready to save at the cash register this weekend. The Texas Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual Tax-Free weekend.
Qualifying items can be purchased tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas.
This year’s sales tax holiday begins Friday, Aug. 11 and runs through midnight Sunday, Aug. 13.
Redesign, continued.
The sales tax exemption applies only to qualifying items you buy during the sales tax holiday. Items you buy before or after the sales tax holiday do not qualify for exemption, and there is no tax refund available.
Delivery, shipping, handling, and transportation charges by the seller are part of the item’s sales price.
Since clothing, backpacks and school supplies have to be less than $100 to qualify, customers have to
That’s according to Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez.
“Yes, we are going to continue to keep an emphasis on our secondary campuses especially as we’ve transitioned –although it is still called the STAAR Test, it’s a new test. It’s different. It’s not the same STAAR Test of the year before and so with that continued emphasis, we are looking at how we can continue to see progress at all of our schools but in particular our middle schools and we did see progress in all content areas and so we are very proud of that but what we are finding is that we need more time for math and reading/
look at the item’s total sales price to determine if they can buy it tax free.
For example, you buy a pair of jeans for $95 with a $10 delivery charge for a total price of $105. Because the jeans’ total price is more than $100, tax is due on the entire $105 price.
If a delivery charge is billed per item, and an invoice has both exempt and taxable items, only the qualifying exempt item’s delivery charge is exempt.
If the delivery charge is a flat rate per package, and the amount charged is the same regardless of how many items are included in the package, the total charge can be attributed to any one of the items in the package.
This year the Texas comptroller's office estimates shoppers will save $112 million in state and local taxes.
language arts and that was the feedback that we received from parents and from teachers is they wanted more time to ensure that they could get all of the content in. So, we are not drastically changing the way the Friday looks. It’s still a purposeful Friday. We are just reducing some of the minutes of your Whole Child block, of your Grow Block of your PBL block to be able to build in that time for math and reading,” said Gutierrez.
Dr. Gutierrez says the district will continue to implement the redesign concept and will make the necessary changes so that all students are successful. Meanwhile, parents are encouraged to discuss the school days with their children, particularly their experiences and programs on Fridays.

GVEC officials say the project will generate roughly 4,800 megawatt hours per year through 4,800 solar panels, which use trackers to follow the sun’s changing position throughout the day.
That should meet about 13 percent of Vitesco’s annual energy consumption at its Seguin facility. They say would be enough energy to power 330 Texas homes per year, and it would have emissions reductions equivalent to removing nearly 600 cars from the road for a year.
Alvarez says this solar project will be the largest yet commercially for GVEC.
“From a consumer standpoint and our membership, it is one of the first and the largest for us. We have a lot of residential folks that do exactly what Vitesco is doing, or they had roofed up solar which serves a portion of their home throughout the course of the day but in the commercial space, there is nothing at the size of this that we have on our grid,” said Alvarez.
Scott Williams, head of operations for Vitesco Technologies North America says their collaboration with Big Sun Solar has led to a significant leap forward in allowing them to also meet their corporate environmental and
sustainability targets. Williams says its corporate values of “Passionate, Partnering and Pioneering” are on full display thanks to the expertise and support received from Big Sun Solar and GVEC.
This project marks the global company’s largest solar project in North America, and Alvarez says it’s the largest, in general, for this area.
“I would say that there is none to this scale. This is certainly a groundbreaking project for all three parties. But this behind the meter installation that is going to basically – in layman’s terms – it makes a portion of their load disappear from the
ERCOT market on a daily basis when the sun rises and throughout the course of the entire day. They are going to reduce their load by roughly 10 to 13 percent over the course of a single day and that energy will come from the solar panels that are at the site. So instead of that being provided from a gas plant or from a coal plant or wind out of West Texas or even a large solar farm that is in West Texas as well – I mean this will come and the generation will occur locally at their facility,” said Alvarez.
Robert Miggins, the CEO of Big Sun Solar, says his company is also excited about this unique project. He says it represents a huge leap into the future. He says converting the transportation sector to climate neutral solutions is a daunting task, but it is also an achievable goal.
By 2030, Vitesco Technologies wants to achieve climate neutrality for its entire production and internal business activities. The company has also set for itself the ambitious goal of making its entire value chain climate neutral by 2040. This also includes all business activities outside the company’s own processes – from the extraction of raw materials to the use of products.
Groundbreaking, for the solar project, began in late July and the project is expected to be completed and commissioned by the end of 2023.

Biden Says Democracy “Won” As OH Voters Reject Controversial Ballot Measure
(Columbus, OH) -- President Biden says democracy “won” following Ohio voters rejecting a measure that would have made it harder to get abortion rights enshrined in the state constitution. Tuesday’s special election had just one issue on that ballot. It would have required at least 60-percent of voters to pass any amendments to the state constitution, rather than the current simple majority. Although Issue One didn’t specifically mention abortion, several Ohio Republican legislators admitted it was an effort to undercut a separate ballot measure that aims to add abortion rights into the state’s constitution. Biden said in a tweet that the measure was a “ blatant attempt to weaken voters’ voices and further erode the freedom of women to make their own health care decisions.”
New Study Says 10K Steps Per Day Not Necessary To Live Longer
(Baltimore, MD) -- A new study claims you don’t need to take ten-thousand steps every day to lower your risk of heart disease. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore measured data from over 200-thousand people who were counting their steps, and settled on four-thousand per day as a good target. In a study published this week, the scientists said people who hit the four-thousand-step mark saw their risk go down of dying prematurely from any cause. They added, though, health benefits do increase the more people walk.
Christie Challenges Trump After Weight-Shaming Remarking
(Undated) -- GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie is challenging Donald Trump after the former president made a joke about Christie’s weight. Trump spoke Tuesday at a campaign rally in New Hampshire and said Christie “can’t be bothered” because “he’s eating right now.” The former New Jersey governor fired back with a tweet that said, “If you had the guts you would show up to the debate and say it to my face.” Trump has indicated that he’s unlikely to participate in the upcoming Republican presidential debate set for August 23rd in Milwaukee.
Colorado Health Officials Concerned About Drop In Vaccination Rates
(Denver, CO) -- Colorado health officials say they are concerned about a drop in vaccination rates for kindergarten students. Data from the state health department indicates that about 88-percent of kindergarten students were up-to-date with their vaccinations during the last school year. That’s down about five-percent from the previous year. Vaccinations for all school-aged children were also down by more than two-percent last year. State officials aren’t sure how much of the decline can be blamed on parents who refuse to vaccinate their children. They say some parents might still be catching up on shots that were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
