Assistance, funding available for those impacted by COVID-19 By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Has COVID-19 impacted your ability to stay afloat of the bills? Funds are still available for local individuals or families whose lives have been financially impacted by the pandemic. Daniela Flores, communications director for the Community Council of South-Central Texas, say the group is looking to assist those who might have lost their job, are receiving less hours or who have been forced to hire childcare.

or below the federal poverty guidelines. For utility assistance, it’s 150 percent the poverty guidelines. So once again, the Community Council is here to help our residents and we know that this is a

very unique period of time but as always, Community Council is ready to serve our community. If you or someone you know is struggling and needs assistance, please reach out to us. Our offices are closed to the general

public but there are coordinators in the offices and you can go by, pick up an application or visit our website and download one, fill it out and take it back to the offices,” said Flores. Flores says because of the extra stress during this pandemic, the guidelines have been adjusted to accommodate more people needing assistance. “In the past, our guidelines had been at 150 percent but Congress has recognized that a lot more of the middle class families are also suffering because of job loss or they have more responsibilities because kiddos are home and what not. So, they increased the percentage to 200 percent. That 50 percent window is opening this assistance to a variety of more families. The percent depends on family composition and household size and what not. But we still invite you to apply and don’t hesitate. We are here to help. I’m here to reiterate that our assistance, we value our clients’ privacy and we treat every client with dignity and respect, said Flores.

“We have assistance available in this area and this assistance is to help provide relief to people whose employment has been disrupted by economic changes by COVID-19 thus resulting in lower income so relief can include anything like utility payment assistance for electricity, gas and propane as well as utility payments that some programs don’t cover like water, sewer deposits and late fees. Assistance can also include gift cards to buy prescriptions, personal hygiene products, infant supplies, school supplies and cleaning and disinfecting,” said Flores.

In addition to utility or other financial assistance, the CCSCT has emergency home/ rental assistance. Qualifying households may receive one month of rent. Paper applications for any of the programs can be downloaded at www.ccsct.org. Residents can also apply at the CCSCT office located at 1201 W. Court St. The office number is 830-379-3022.

Flores says although there are eligibility requirements, she encourages everyone to give it a try. “Pretty much anybody can apply. Our eligibility for this program is 200 percent

Seguin ISD reminding parents of registration deadline

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is looking to lock down registration for all of its students. This week includes the deadline to register your kids in the Seguin ISD. Of its nearly 7,000 students, 34.4 percent or 2,408 students have already registered online.

Hoffmann says although school doesn’t start until Tuesday, Sept. 8, registering your student now is very important. Plus, he says it alleviates any of that additional stress closer to the first day and decreases any safety concerns.

learning and how many choose remote learning,” said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says the online process is available for new and returning students.

“It’s a pretty easy and simple process. Visit our website, SeguinISD.net and on the Back to School page, there is information on how to go online and register. We have a helpline phone number as well. Our campus staff has been trained so parents can contact their child’s school if they need help but documents are available online. Hoffmann says making sure families register They can be submitted online. Again, to make it their students this week also allows the district as seamless as possible and to cut down on that and teachers to better prepare their classrooms interaction where we are having to do it face to face,” said Hoffmann. and their lessons for a smooth start.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says as part of that registration process, the district will be looking at how to best accommodate students both at home and/or in the classroom.

“It was (important) that we transition this year with COVID and trying to restrict groups and face to face interaction and so in order to do that, online was the way to go. We’ve been exploring the possibility for a number of years and we were finally able to get it in place,” said Hoffmann.

“Our online registration process is open right now and we are hoping to have and encourage our parents to register their children by Aug. 19 and as part of that registration process, we are asking our parents to let us know how their child will be attending school this fall. Whether that child will be doing face to face learning in the classroom or going the remote learning route,” said Hoffmann.

“A lot of our actions as far as what our classrooms are going to look like, that is going to be dependent on what our registration numbers look and how many students choose classroom

Again, Wednesday, Aug. 19 is the deadline to register your student and decide on what option of learning families will choose. Online registration is available at seguinisd.net

Trump Again Pushes For Safe Reopening Of Schools Florida Sheriff Bans Masks For Deputies (Washington, DC) -- President Trump is again calling for the safe reopening of schools. During a briefing, Trump noted mitigation efforts and health protocols to protect students and teachers can make it possible. He reiterated children are at a lower risk of serious illness or death from the coronavirus. Trump has been pushing for students to return to class for weeks despite COVID-19 concerns. He said staying home can harm a child’s well-being.

(Marion County, FL) -- In a time when more cities are making masks mandatory, one sheriff in Florida is doing the opposite. Billy Woods of Marion County just banned masks for his deputies. He told them to stop covering up, except in locations like hospitals and the courthouse. This also applies to deputies working special events. Woods says for all the experts who argue for a mask, he can find just as many against it. This comes as hotspot Florida added another 81-hundred coronavirus cases and 213 deaths Wednesday.

Big East The Latest To Put Off Fall Sports

(Providence, RI) -- Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo is postponing the start of the school year by two weeks. Raimondo plans to announce whether schools will offer in-person instruction or a hybrid model the week of August 31st.

(Undated) -- Another college conference is putting off fall sports this year because of coronavirus concerns. The Big East announced it is postponing athletics and will look into playing the impacted sports in the spring. The move pushes back soccer, cross country, volleyball and field hockey. Young, Jr. Jose Cortez “Joe” Young Jr., age 77 of Plainville, Georgia, formerly of Seguin, Texas, passed away with his children at his side on Monday, August 10, 2020 in Decatur, Georgia. Joe was born on July 16, 1943 in McQueeney, Texas, to Gomecinda (Cortez) and Jose Maria Young Sr. After attending school in McQueeney, Joe joined the navy, where he served as a Seamen Apprentice from 1960 to 1962. In 1963, he married Mary Louise Hernandez, with whom he had two children, Joey and Fannie. Starting out in his professional career, he got a job by saying that he knew how to pour concrete even though he did not. When on the job, he just watched what the other men were doing out of the corner of his eye to quickly pick it up. From there, he developed his own business, Joe Young Jr.’s Concrete. In 1986, he moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area, where he continued to grow his business along with his son, and ultimately his grandsons. Joe never met a stranger and would always start up a conversation with anyone anywhere. He was a wonderful story teller, even if you had heard some of those stories over and over again. He had many nicknames, including “Mighty Joe Young” in Texas, “Indian Joe” in Georgia and “Papa Joe” to his family. Joe was also well known for giving nicknames to everyone he came across, although he claims that he never came up with a nickname for his son-in-law or at least took that name to his grave. Many of those nicknames have stuck with the recipients for the rest of their lives.

Survivors include his son, Joey Young, III of Plainville, Georgia, and his wife, Esther Saenz Young, his daughter Fannie Young Smith of Austin, TX, and her husband Paul Smith, his grandchildren, Joe Anthony Young, IV, Samuel Ryan Young, Annabella Maria Smith, Owen Francisco Smith and Vanessa Alicia Smith, his long-time companion Julie Swann and her children, Deanna and Troy, and his sisters Maria “Chita” Teneyuque, Sylvia “Toby” Young and Ofelia “Faye” Gloria and her husband Joe, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, other loving family and many friends in Texas and Georgia. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow in Santo Tomas Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 all CDC protocols must be followed including social distancing, limited seating, and face coverings worn both at church and the cemetery. Should you desire, the service will also be livestreamed at https:// vimeo.com/event/220875. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Anthony Young, IV, Samuel Ryan Young, Paul Smith, Owen Francisco Smith, Ricky Teneyuque, Armando Arambula, Jesse Villegas and Joe Gloria. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155.

Schneider

Orlando A. Schneider, age 81 of Rockport, passed away on August 10, 2020.

In the early 80’s, Orlando moved to The Valley for work where he met and married Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan. After his retirement they moved to Rockport, where Orlando enjoyed his love of fishing. If you could not find him, he was either at the bay or on a boat. He loved freshwater fishing and gulf fishing with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan Schneider, his parents, and his brother Glenn R. Schneider and his wife Jeanine. Survivors include his daughter, Susan Skrzycki and husband Stanley; son, Kenneth Schneider and his wife Leah; and son David Schneider; daughter Denean Schneider; step-children, David Morrison, Michael Morrison (Carla), Robert Kemp (Rhonda), Chiare Kemp Davis, Cleo Jeanette Fleming (Robert), and Diane Kemp; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and many friends. Orlando’s family would like to express deep gratitude to Home Health Care, and all of its staff throughout the past several years. Family also wants to thank his neighbors Don, Roger, and Stanley for all of their help and friendship over the years. A walk-through line visitation will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by funeral service at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Price officiating. From the comforts of your home the service may be live streamed at https://vimeo.com/event/227078. Interment will follow in Dugger Cemetery. Due to Covid- 19 restrictions, all protocol including limited seating, all wearing face coverings and social distancing will be followed at all locations.

Joe always said that “Joe Young never die!” Unfortunately, he had been suffering from a hernia and other health issues for some time. While he should have been taking it easy, Joe wouldn’t slow down and insisted on pouring concrete on the day before he was admitted to the hospital. He passed away in the VA Hospital in Decatur, Georgia, from intestinal complications that developed from the hernia. It turns out he was right, however, Joe Young will never die in our hearts and memories.

Orlando was born on November 16, 1938 in GuadalupeCountytoOraMae (Kwast) and R. E. (Edward) Schneider. Orlando lived in Seguin during his youth and early adulthood where met and married Carole Lee Sappington. They had 3 children: Susan, Kenneth, and David. Orlando liked going with the whole family camping and fishing, and also went deer hunting, so that we could make some deer sausage, that we all loved to eat. He worked for Cardelle Terrazzo flooring, he did some concrete work for Lawrence Wahl, and did some fiberglass work off and on, before joining Dover Elevators where he retired after 25 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cross Church, 814 N. Bauer, Seguin, Texas, 78155, American Diabetes Association, 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900, Arlington, VA 22202 (www.diabetes.org) or American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 22478 Oklahoma City, OK 73123(www.cancer.org)

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Anita Young, Lydia Young, Minerva Garcia, Lucia Aleman, and his brothers, Reinaldo Young and Rudolfo “Rudy” Young.

In October 1972, the family moved from Seguin to San Antonio. He also loved watching the Dallas Cowboys, especially the years when Roger Staubach was their quarterback.

Joe was very proud of his children and their families, and was always bragging about them.

The family understands the Covid-19 uncertainties and the need for everyone to stay safe – they know you have them in your thoughts and prayers. Orlando was cremated in Aransas Pass at the Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes and Crematory.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155.
