It’s back to class for Navarro ISD

The Voice of Seguin Today

Students make the official return to learning

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Geronimo) -- Welcome back Panthers! Today marks the first day of school for students in the Navarro ISD. District officials say today marks the start of a

nontraditional school year for students who will be engaged both in the classroom or at home. Superintendent Wendi Russell says despite launching the school year amid a pandemic, the Navarro ISD is still very excited

about returning to learning. She says yes, there are going to be anxieties and there will be bumps along the way but believes that together, the district will stand as one.

“Don’t get me wrong, we are all worried. We are all scared about what this is going to look like and how to do it because it’s new for everyone. As I addressed our staff, I told them that this was going to be their hardest year if they were brand new if not as hard if they had at least a year under the belt because they know what it traditionally should look like and I t’s not a traditional year. There’s nothing traditional about this and we are all still working through what it should look like. So, the first couple of weeks are going to bumpy and we want parents to understand that it’s going to be a bumpy ride at first. Technology wise, you can never depend on technology 100 percent. I told

the staff to expect the unexpected and to be able to be flexible and go with it as we move forward. So, we are just excited to be able to see our students whether it’s remote through a computer or face to face. We are excited to get school started again,” said Russell. See BACK TO SCHOOL, page 2

With the option of face to face or remote learning, a majority of families in the Navarro ISD will be choosing to send their kids into the classroom today. Russell says any final enrollment numbers aren’t anticipated until at least the next couple of weeks. “Today, looking at numbers, we have about 70 percent on campus face to face. That’s from parents that have responded. Across the board, we probably have about 20-25 percent of parents that have not responded – that looking at number wise, this is what our expectation is to be 70 percent face to face and then 30 percent remote learning,” said Russell. Since Aug. 8, the Navarro ISD has reported a total of 20 positive COVID-19 cases within the district. This total includes 10 staff members and 10 students. These cases have since been traced back to those taking part in extra-curricular activities on campus. Although the district has been transparent about each of these cases, Russell says it’s still very difficult to have to deliver the news to families and to the community. Nonetheless, she believes the district’s effort to mitigate the problem as soon as possible warrants plenty of credit. “When we get a positive, we have to let them know that we’ve had this positive case without giving too much information and I think that’s where some of the

uneasiness comes from too because they are not getting the full information like what sport it was or when it comes out in the classroom, what exact classroom it is because we can’t give that identifying piece of information so we are doing the best we can to contact parents, let them know, to keep them aware that we do have this. We are expecting cases. Every school district is expecting cases and realistically, you have to look at it that way. We are doing everything we can with hand sanitizers, taking temperatures, wearing masks and sanitizing around the clock. We are doing all of that but we know that we are not a boarding school so we don’t keep kids here in a bubble and we don’t keep our faculty here in a bubble so when they go out in the evening to eat or stand in line at the grocery store, they could potentially come into contact with someone that has that positive COVID case so we have to just screen everyday and use our best practices to catch it as it comes through,” said Russell. The start of a brand-new school year is especially exciting for Russell as this will be her first year to serve as the superintendent of schools for the Navarro ISD. Russell says this school year was already going to be challenging as she works to maintain Navarro’s history of excellence. “For me, I want parents to know that Navarro has a history of excellence and a history of setting very

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19, 2020

high expectations and I plan to carry through with those expectations and have that high excellence expectation of our staff and of our students and parents. I do believe that it is important to work together as a community -parents, students and staff to make sure that we are educating our students and that we are making sure that all of our students are well rounded (and) not just focusing on academics or just focusing on athletics but being fully well-rounded, being involved in a maybe an afterschool activity for our younger kids and making sure that we are offering things for all students to participate in,” said Russell. At least during these next couple of weeks, parents are reminded of a few things. First, kids’ temperatures will be taken at each of the campuses and at each bus stop. This means ensuring that someone will remain with the smaller kids at the bus stop until they have been cleared to load. It also means practicing a little patience as kids are being dropped off and screened upon entry. Second, with more kids expected to be car riders, parents should still expect a little more congestion with traffic. District officials say they do hope the new drive coming off of Link Road into the elementary school will help alleviate some of those issues. Third, parents are asked to exercise a bit of patience and to allow for some little wiggle room as the district works through normal first day of school issues. Russell adds that while it’s no doubt going to be a different year, it’s still going to be an exciting one.

Dr. Birx: School Reopenings Should be ‘Tailored to Each and Every Community’

(Little Rock, AR) -- White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator, Dr. Deborah Birx, says school re-opening procedures should be “tailored to each and every community.” Speaking in Little Rock, Arkansas, Dr. Birx said safety should come first and parents in every district should being given the option of virtual education. She said she wished the U.S. lockdown back in March and April looked like that of Italy, but she added that “Americans don’t react well to that kind of prohibition.” She stressed that behavioral change is important, beginning with wearing masks and limiting capacity at restaurants and bars.

Texas Becomes Fourth State With 10K COVID Deaths

(Austin, TX) -- Texas is now the fourth state to lose more than 10-thousand lives to coronavirus. More than 200 new deaths have been reported almost daily in the last few weeks, along with up to eight thousand new cases. But those numbers are likely higher. The Department of Health Services uncovered thousands of unreported infections as far back as March. Data investigators are now trying to figure out why the positivity rate has spiked to record levels this month.

Young, Jr. Jose Cortez “Joe” Young Jr., age 77 of Plainville, Georgia, formerly of Seguin, Texas, passed away with his children at his side on Monday, August 10, 2020 in Decatur, Georgia. Joe was born on July 16, 1943 in McQueeney, Texas, to Gomecinda (Cortez) and Jose Maria Young Sr. After attending school in McQueeney, Joe joined the navy, where he served as a Seamen Apprentice from 1960 to 1962. In 1963, he married Mary Louise Hernandez, with whom he had two children, Joey and Fannie. Starting out in his professional career, he got a job by saying that he knew how to pour concrete even though he did not. When on the job, he just watched what the other men were doing out of the corner of his eye to quickly pick it up. From there, he developed his own business, Joe Young Jr.’s Concrete. In 1986, he moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area, where he continued to grow his business along with his son, and ultimately his grandsons. Joe never met a stranger and would always start up a conversation with anyone anywhere. He was a wonderful story teller, even if you had heard some of those stories over and over again. He had many nicknames, including “Mighty Joe Young” in Texas, “Indian Joe” in Georgia and “Papa Joe” to his family. Joe was also well known for giving nicknames to everyone he came across, although he claims that he never came up with a nickname for his son-in-law or at least took that name to his grave. Many of those nicknames have stuck with the recipients for the rest of their lives.

Survivors include his son, Joey Young, III of Plainville, Georgia, and his wife, Esther Saenz Young, his daughter Fannie Young Smith of Austin, TX, and her husband Paul Smith, his grandchildren, Joe Anthony Young, IV, Samuel Ryan Young, Annabella Maria Smith, Owen Francisco Smith and Vanessa Alicia Smith, his long-time companion Julie Swann and her children, Deanna and Troy, and his sisters Maria “Chita” Teneyuque, Sylvia “Toby” Young and Ofelia “Faye” Gloria and her husband Joe, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, other loving family and many friends in Texas and Georgia. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow in Santo Tomas Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 all CDC protocols must be followed including social distancing, limited seating, and face coverings worn both at church and the cemetery. Should you desire, the service will also be livestreamed at https:// vimeo.com/event/220875. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Anthony Young, IV, Samuel Ryan Young, Paul Smith, Owen Francisco Smith, Ricky Teneyuque, Armando Arambula, Jesse Villegas and Joe Gloria. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155.

Schneider

Orlando A. Schneider, age 81 of Rockport, passed away on August 10, 2020.

In the early 80’s, Orlando moved to The Valley for work where he met and married Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan. After his retirement they moved to Rockport, where Orlando enjoyed his love of fishing. If you could not find him, he was either at the bay or on a boat. He loved freshwater fishing and gulf fishing with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan Schneider, his parents, and his brother Glenn R. Schneider and his wife Jeanine. Survivors include his daughter, Susan Skrzycki and husband Stanley; son, Kenneth Schneider and his wife Leah; and son David Schneider; daughter Denean Schneider; step-children, David Morrison, Michael Morrison (Carla), Robert Kemp (Rhonda), Chiare Kemp Davis, Cleo Jeanette Fleming (Robert), and Diane Kemp; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and many friends. Orlando’s family would like to express deep gratitude to Home Health Care, and all of its staff throughout the past several years. Family also wants to thank his neighbors Don, Roger, and Stanley for all of their help and friendship over the years. A walk-through line visitation will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by funeral service at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Price officiating. From the comforts of your home the service may be live streamed at https://vimeo.com/event/227078. Interment will follow in Dugger Cemetery. Due to Covid- 19 restrictions, all protocol including limited seating, all wearing face coverings and social distancing will be followed at all locations.

Joe always said that “Joe Young never die!” Unfortunately, he had been suffering from a hernia and other health issues for some time. While he should have been taking it easy, Joe wouldn’t slow down and insisted on pouring concrete on the day before he was admitted to the hospital. He passed away in the VA Hospital in Decatur, Georgia, from intestinal complications that developed from the hernia. It turns out he was right, however, Joe Young will never die in our hearts and memories.

Orlando was born on November 16, 1938 in GuadalupeCountytoOraMae (Kwast) and R. E. (Edward) Schneider. Orlando lived in Seguin during his youth and early adulthood where met and married Carole Lee Sappington. They had 3 children: Susan, Kenneth, and David. Orlando liked going with the whole family camping and fishing, and also went deer hunting, so that we could make some deer sausage, that we all loved to eat. He worked for Cardelle Terrazzo flooring, he did some concrete work for Lawrence Wahl, and did some fiberglass work off and on, before joining Dover Elevators where he retired after 25 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cross Church, 814 N. Bauer, Seguin, Texas, 78155, American Diabetes Association, 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900, Arlington, VA 22202 (www.diabetes.org) or American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 22478 Oklahoma City, OK 73123(www.cancer.org)

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Anita Young, Lydia Young, Minerva Garcia, Lucia Aleman, and his brothers, Reinaldo Young and Rudolfo “Rudy” Young.

In October 1972, the family moved from Seguin to San Antonio. He also loved watching the Dallas Cowboys, especially the years when Roger Staubach was their quarterback.

Joe was very proud of his children and their families, and was always bragging about them.

The family understands the Covid-19 uncertainties and the need for everyone to stay safe – they know you have them in your thoughts and prayers. Orlando was cremated in Aransas Pass at the Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Our father, CMDR Robert “Bob” Franklin Stoeltje, USCG (Ret.), age 84 of Seguin, Texas, departed on his final flight on Sunday, August 16, 2020.

Dad met Mom when he was serving at his first duty station in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1957.

He was born August 4, 1936, in Floresville, Texas, to Robert Samuel Stoeltje and Louise Ridout Stoeltje of Poth, Texas.

They married on January 25, 1958, and their firstborn, Mark, entered the world on February 25, 1959.

We are also grateful for all of the friends he made along his journey, from his days on the Poth Pirates football team to the Coast Guard members and their families who made each duty station a memorable and rewarding experience, and his dominoes partners at Seguin Assisted Living who gave him a reason to keep challenging himself. You all helped our Dad to have a rich and satisfying life, and one well lived, and we are thankful for all of you.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved wife, Alice Maria Maher Stoeltje, on July 3, 2011. He is survived by his five children, Mark Stoeltje and wife Melissa, Cathy Horvath and husband Skeeter, Lori Evans, Amy Randolph and husband Bob, and Matt Stoeltje. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Sam Stoeltje, Ryan Horvath, Kelly Roles and husband Mark, Nikki Cordova and husband Jason, Eli Lay and fiancé Kennedy Miller, Pilar Randolph, James Stoeltje, and Chris Wolf-Willoughby and wife Meghan; and seven great-grandchildren: Wyatt Roles, Kensley Cordova, Elijah Wolf-Willoughby, Tess Roles, Wynter Wolf-Willoughby, Warren Wolf-Willoughby, and Sterling Roles. He is also survived by his brother John David Stoeltje and wife Jeannie, sister Bonny Hutton, nieces Johnnie Jean Stoeltje and Sherry Hutton Parker and nephews Bart and Brad Hutton. We all, with Mom and Dad, continue to include former spouses Pete Larrieu

She knew he was the one for her when she witnessed his gracious and sympathetic response to a waitress who had just accidentally dropped a chocolate milkshake down his back.

That was the beginning of a whirlwind, around the globe family chronicle, moving next to Pensacola, Florida, then Naval Air Station Corpus Christi to St. Petersburg, Florida, and on to Sangley Point in the Philippines, then San Diego, California, back to Corpus, north to Governors Island, New York, down the east coast to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and back to New Orleans where he served as director of the Coast Guard Auxiliary before retiring to Seguin, Texas, in May 1981, after serving 26 years in the United States Coast Guard. His awards include the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Coast Guard Unit Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Cuban Operations, U.S. Navy Expeditionary Medal for Cuban Operations. The family would like to express our appreciation to the management and staff at Seguin Assisted Living for making Dad’s final years happy, safe and comfortable – thank you, Karen, Lindsay, Senayda, Casey, Laurie, Veronica, Bill, Sheryll, and everyone else there who made his days a little brighter.
