School district host 2020 Convocation

Seguin ISD teachers, employees equipped with their own lessons for the upcoming school year

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The timing for this year’s 2020 Convocation message could not have been more perfect for the Seguin ISD as teachers and staff gathered throughout the district Monday morning to hear from this year’s prestigious keynote speaker -- a speaker who brought words of action and inspiration as the district prepares itself for a less traditional school year.

The Seguin ISD, during its Virtual Convocation Event, welcomed Dr. Tyrone Howard. This year instead of cheering teachers, the sounds of the Matador Band and a live presentation in the high school gym, employees gathered in front of the big screen at the various campuses to listen to his message. Dr. Howard not only serves as a professor in the Graduate School of Education at UCLA but is also its associate dean for equity, diversity, and inclusion. In addition, Dr. Howard is known for his book, “Why Race and Culture Matter in Schools.” As a result of his research which primarily focused on academic achievement of youth in urban schools, Dr. Howard has been able to take what he has learned and has shared those lessons with numerous schools across the country. Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez says lucky for them the district had already booked Dr. Howard’s presentation prior to COVID-19.

and inclusion and diversity and cultural awareness, it was just really the perfect time for him to come and speak to the staff because our students right now are experiencing trauma but on top of that, what we are seeing are the disparities that exist among our society. They are ever more prevalent now during COVID but they stand out more whether it’s families not having connectivity, not having technology, families not having healthcare, many preexisting conditions that are leading to really sad side-effects if COVID-19 hits the family. So, his message was one that I think we could all relate to right now because of the high insensitivity to what our students are experiencing and our students had many challenges prior to COVID but Now although the live event was forced to turn into a virtual now that COVID has hit, our one, he still believes it was all well worth the effort. students’ challenges have increased and our students are experiencing trauma,” said “It just really tied in perfectly not having any idea that COVID Gutierrez. 2020 Convocation provides message for upcoming school year 2

CONVOCATION, continued from page 1

Dr. Gutierrez says not only did his message include the trauma that will be left behind but also the steps needed to move the children and their families forward. “One of the messages that he shared was that the trauma that is compounding right now isn’t going to automatically disappear when our students come back to us whenever that day is going to be. The impact of this pandemic is going to last for many years to come and it is educators who are going to help our students navigate their stressors, help students be able to learn, narrow the gaps but most importantly, what teachers are here for students is helping them navigate many of the issues that they deal with whether at school, at home, socially and they don’t have that right now so what he inspired us to do is to really improve our communication skills with parents and with our students because that’s going to be an even bigger challenge for those students who are not in our classroom,” said Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says Howard also challenged each employee this week to look within themselves in helping to build a bridge to a better tomorrow. He says headlines of division in America cannot be overlooked. “Be he also challenged us to really look at our curriculum as well, look within ourselves, look within our curriculum so that we can better advocate for students not only through curriculum but just simply to activate for

students and I think that one of the things we’ve realized over these last few years is that there is deep division in our country and our teachers can (unite) and help build a future of citizens who are united and who can come together and who can overcome challenges,” said Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says Howard’s words only motivated his team even more to take on whatever this year looks to bring. “What is ever more critical right now is that our students need us and it’s essential that we are there for them and I really think that our teachers, our staff are ready. Our staff is ready for the challenge and I could sense that today, sense that through just watching them, sense that through their responses as there was some live interaction that took place via the chat feature in the Zoom meetings but we are ready. We are ready for this year. We are ready to see our kids whether it’s in person or virtually and we are ready to go above and beyond to meet their needs,” said Gutierrez. District officials say although their 2020 Convocation was held three weeks early, the message by Howard just allows them to prepare even more for a brand-new school year and for the first day of school scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8.

SEDC debuts first ever virtual job fair today

join this week’s virtual job fair. He says looking for a job is already a stressful event and hopes that this virtual route will not only lessen that stress but will also help people feel safe.

(Seguin) -- Like most other things these days, attending a job fair can also now be tackled from the comfort of your own home. Providing that opportunity today is the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. The SEDC is inviting job seekers to log in to this afternoon’s (Thursday) Virtual Job Fair. Josh Schneuker, SEDC executive director, says his team wanted a way to better connect residents with local employers. “Back I believe it was mid-July, we actually partnered with Workforce Solutions Alamo. They hosted a virtual job fair for a few Seguin employers and like everything nowadays, it was the first time that we had ever even heard of a virtual job fair so we got involved in that and just kind of learned the ropes and it seemed like given everything going on with social distancing and not being able to have large scaled events, it seemed like the best way that we could get employers connected with job seekers. So, really over the past couple of weeks, activity with our employers here in the community and their hiring efforts have really

picked up substantially so we really determined the need for a virtual job fair and made the decision that we were going to go along with hosting our own and working with our employers to get a lot of their positions filled up as soon as we can,” said Schneuker. Schneuker says participating is easy plus job seekers this week will get to hear from Tyson, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Caterpillar and Vitesco Technologies. He says they’ll talk about their company’s culture, benefits plus more about their open positions. “Really, the way it goes is we keep it very intimate. We only have

four businesses participating this week in our job fair and they’ll have an opportunity to introduce themselves, introduce their company, talk a little bit about the positions that they are hiring for at the moment and then provide those who are on the virtual job fair with instructions on how to apply for those jobs so those in attendance can also ask questions directly to the companies during the virtual job fair but it’s really just kind of a neat, very time effective and efficient way to try to connect our employers with job seekers during these strange times,” said Schneuker. Schneuker says whether it’s at home or at the local library, the city is making it easy for people to

“The Seguin Library, of course, has access to the internet and computers and things like that. Our Workforce Solutions Alamo Career Center here in Seguin can also help connect and help out folks out there as well. We are really hoping that we can get back to some sort of in-person job fair where there is a really high demand to hire folks right now and this is one way to try our best to work with our employers to fill those positions but the way that we know has really been most effective has been the in-person job fair so we are thinking about ways in which we might be able to get back to that in a fairly short order but for the time being, virtual is the safest bet at the moment,” said Schneuker. Registration for the job fair can be found on the Seguin Economic Development Corporation’s Facebook page. Once registered, participants will receive an email with instructions for logging into the job fair. Again, the virtual job fair will be held today from 2 to 3 p.m.

SPORTS High School Volleyball – Aug. 18 recaps Marion football game vs. Marion volleyball suffers home loss to FEAST Hondo moved back to Week 4 (Marion) – Marion High School’s 2020 football schedule has changed again, as the Bulldogs’ season opener in Hondo has been moved back to its original Week 4 date of Sept. 18.

(Marion) – San AntonioFEAST handed Marion a 3-0 home loss Tuesday night, defeating the Bulldogs 25-20 in the first set, 25-15 in the second, and 25-6 in the third. Marion has dropped three straight matches since the season opening win over Poteet last week, but firstyear head coach Melissa Mitchell is still encouraged by the direction of the

team’s learning curve and its competitive nature. “It is an ongoing process, especially with us already starting school,” Mitchell said. “I’d say we’re rolling with the punches. They’re doing really well. I’m really proud of them. They don’t quit. They don’t give up, and I’m crazy proud that they don’t, even when it doesn’t end the way we want it to.”

Marion’s original opener against Austin-Hyde Park was cancelled due to TAPPS suspending football until Sept. 8. The replacement The Bulldogs will have game against Somerset ample opportunities to get reps and sharpen their skills during the upcoming weekend, with dual matches in Devine that also involve Natalia and Plesasanton. was cut by Somerset, and Hondo’s original opener against Pleasanton was cut because Pleasanton suspended football due to COVID-19. As a result, Marion and Hondo agreed to play Aug. 28 rather than in Week 4. Pleasanton was cleared to play in Week 1, so the Eagles and Hondo reinstated their game for that date, while Marion and Hondo

reverted to their initial Sept. 18 meeting. Barring the last-minute addition of another Week 1 opponent, Marion will now open the season on Sept. 4 in Goliad. With Navarro’s Aug. 28 game at Port Lavaca-Calhoun cancelled due COVID-19, no area teams are slated to play in the opening week of the season.

Flu Shots More Important Than Ever, WHO Says

(Geneva) -- The flu shot may be more important than ever. That’s the word from the World Health Organization. While circulation of the annual flu is low in the Southern Hemisphere this year, assessments still need to be done in the North. The Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System is being used for both the flu and COVID this year, which collects samples from around the world from people who have severe respiratory illnesses. Public health measures put in place in the Southern Hemisphere could be stemming the spread of the seasonal flu. There are an estimated one billion flu cases annually around the globe, of which three-to-five-million are considered severe.

Fauci Talks About Ironing Out Testing Delay (Washington, DC) -- Infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci says the testing delay needs to be ironed out to slow the spread of COVID-19. He says if it takes five to seven days to get test results, people are potentially out there spreading the infection the whole time. He added remote learning is likely the best choice for schools in areas where there’s a high rate of transmission. Fauci made his comments on a live-streamed interview with Health-line.

Scientists Find Less-Deadly COVID-19 Mutation In U.S.

(Singapore) -- Scientists say they’ve found a less-deadly COVID-19 mutation in the U.S. But, Paul Tambyah of the National University of Singapore says it’s more infectious. He says most viruses become less deadly over time allowing the virus to keep living on its host. He added mutations are not so different as to make a vaccine ineffective.

WHO Says COVID-19 Pandemic Is Also Causing Mental Health Crisis

(Washington, DC) -- The World Health Organization says the COVID-19 pandemic is also causing a mental health crisis. Regional Director Carissa Etienne says people are using more drugs and alcohol and they’ve also seen an increase in domestic violence. She is calling on governments to extend mental health services as part of the pandemic response. Helplines have popped up in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico, but Etienne says it’s not enough. She warned that “with reduced contact to friends and family or barriers in access to services and shelters, we are leaving survivors with nowhere to go.”

Orlando A. Schneider, age 81 of Rockport, passed away on August 10, 2020. Orlando was born on November 16, 1938 in Guadalupe County to Ora Mae (Kwast) and R. E. (Edward) Schneider. Orlando lived inSeguinduringhisyouthandearly adulthood where met and married CaroleLeeSappington.

They had 3 children: Susan, Kenneth, and David. Orlando liked going with the whole family camping and fishing, and also went deer hunting, so that we could make some deer sausage, that we all loved to eat. He worked for Cardelle Terrazzo flooring, he did some concrete work for Lawrence Wahl, and did some fiberglass work off and on, before joining Dover Elevators where he retired after 25 years. In October 1972, the family moved from Seguin to San Antonio. He also loved watching the Dallas Cowboys, especially the years when Roger Staubach was their quarterback. In the early 80’s, Orlando moved to The Valley for work where he met and married Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan. After his retirement they moved to Rockport, where Orlando enjoyed his love of fishing. If you could not find him, he was either at the bay or on a boat. He loved freshwater fishing and gulf fishing with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan Schneider, his parents, and his brother Glenn R. Schneider and his wife Jeanine. Survivors include his daughter, Susan Skrzycki and husband Stanley; son, Kenneth Schneider and his wife Leah; and son David Schneider; daughter Denean Schneider; step-children, David Morrison, Michael Morrison (Carla), Robert Kemp (Rhonda), Chiare Kemp Davis, Cleo Jeanette Fleming (Robert), and Diane Kemp; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and many friends. Orlando’s family would like to express deep gratitude to Home Health Care, and all of its staff throughout the past several years.
