Individuals encouraged to follow their heart to adoption

Portraits of children awaiting adoption now on display at various locations By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Children never outgrow a need for parents and parents never outgrow room in their hearts. Helping parents realize that extra room in their heart is the Heart Gallery of Bluebonnet Country. The traveling exhibit of individual portraits of children waiting to be adopted is currently being hosted locally thanks to a collaborative “endeavor” between the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and the Guadalupe County Child Welfare Board.

information we needed from CPS, from their caseworkers, the child’s name, the child’s age, what kind of family they liked or are interested in being adopted into and what their likes were and I got all that information together and we printed up these portraits that we had made. Basically, the idea is to get people thinking about it, to get those faces out there,” said Young.

Since January, the photographs have been displayed at various locations throughout Seguin and Guadalupe County. Tracy Young, one of the local coordinators for the Heart Gallery, says for the past eight months and even Portraits of these through the pandemic, volunteers have children awaiting featured these photos of kids who are adoption have been displayed at ready for a new home, new family and various locations. eligible for adoption out of the shadows and into the light. The portraits are to stir you and to reveal the child’s spirit and to give them the individuality that they need to help them find the homes that they are looking for. A lot of these children are older, nobody is under the age of five because of course, we know that babies get adopted pretty quickly. A lot of these children are special needs and of course have suffered some type of trauma within their lives. That’s why they are in the CPS system,” said Young. In hosting the Heart Gallery, Young hopes the effort will also help put to rest any myths about adoption. She says they want to show everyone that anyone can adopt. “Adopting is not as hard as people think it is. People are like ‘oh, I’m not married, I can’t adopt.’ Well, absolutely you can. They don’t turn around single parents. There are minimum requirements. You have to be 21 years of age or older, you have to be financially stable and you have to be a responsible mature adult. Same sex couples can adopt. They don’t turn them away. Elder people can adopt as well, and they are perfect matches for older children especially older teenagers. You never outgrow a need for parents and that’s so true,” said Young. Young says the group is committed to featuring this current set of children until they get the homes they deserve. She says the Heart Gallery is already showing that it works. See ADOPTION, page 3

in response to growing demand for inspections

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is looking for a little bit of help when it comes to dealing with all the growth that’s currently taking place inside the city limits. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday approved an agreement that will allow the city’s planning staff to hire a third party vendor to handle some limited building and home inspections inside the city.

Planning Director Pamela Centeno says her staff has been working hard to try to keep up with the demand for inspections, but she says they need the additional help to make sure that the projects are done right and will not delay the work that needs to be done by the developers. “You have in front of you a professional services agreement for a third-party inspector. This is to supplement the city’s inspection

team. I’ve given you some numbers there. You’ve all heard, and you’ve all seen the growth that we are going through. We did hit a record yesterday in inspections. Our building inspection’s team conducted 120 inspections (Monday). We worked late until 6:30 to get that done so we are still trying to offer next day inspections as much as we can, but we need a little bit of help,” said Centeno. Council members supported providing the help to staff, but they said they wanted to make sure that the inspectors, provided by the company, worked in a way that was consistent with the process, codes and values currently in place within the department. Centeno says they have taken all the necessary steps to make sure that staff has a chance to weigh-in on that work once it’s done. “I conducted interviews with three different firms. The one that we selected, he has come

in and spoken with us and the building officials sat down as well, and we talked about the process, but we’ve gone through the codes. Through this process, they will always be very closely connected to us. They will send daily reports on the inspection results. If there is any issue or concerns from the contractors or from the thirdparty inspector, we will still be very involved in that process, so we are just not handing it over. We are still working with them but they are going out and doing the inspections and sending the results to us,” said Centeno. Centeno says there are several housing projects that are in various stages of development, including an apartment building that will bring 170 new units to Seguin. Several housing, commercial and manufacturing developments are also underway currently in the city of Seguin.

placed in adoptive homes,” said Young.

“We started with 13 and we are down to 10. Now, one of those children was not put in an adopted home. When they turn 16, they get to decide whether or not they want to be adopted and she turned 16 and decided she no longer wanted to seek an adoptive family. So, she was taken off but the two other have been placed in an adoptive homes. Adoptions are not final yet but they have been

As soon as individuals feel a tug at their heart strings, then they’re encouraged to contact the Heart Gallery as soon as possible. She says often times, it’s just locking eyes on that child’s photo that changes the lives of everyone involved. “Reach out. There are so many different ways to do that. You can

SPORTS Marion shows balance, depth in pre-season scrimmage vs. George West

(Marion) - The Marion Bulldogs displayed a versatile mix of inside running and vertical passing, and showed improvement as the night progressed on both sides of the ball in their only pre-season football scrimmage against George West last Thursday at Veterans Stadium. With no fans in attendance due to COVID-19 protocols, the scrimmage was live streamed on Marion High School’s Youtube channel. Those who tuned in saw George West come out on top in the controlled portion of the scrimmage. The Longhorns’ first-team offense produced two touchdowns, and the defense kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone.

Marion gained valuable experience Thursday evening in its only pre-season action against a live opponent - George West - before the 2020 regular season begins.

Marion turned the tables at the end of the night to win the timed quarter 14-7. See MARION, page 5

Bulldogs finish strong in home tune-up against Longhorns MARION, continued from page 4 The Bulldogs moved the ball 31 yards from their own 25 to the George West 44 in the allotted 10 plays on their first controlled possession. Starting quarterback Tanner Beakley accounted for the bulk of the production, peeling off runs of seven and 10 yards while completing a 12-yard pass to Bryce Gonyer. The George West starting offense used a 51yard run to spark an eight-play, 75 yard drive that culminated in a one-yard rushing touchdown on its first possession of the controlled scrimmage. Neither of the second string offenses produced touchdowns, but the Longhorns were more productive during that segment. Marion quarterback Dillon Sanchez completed a 25-yard pass to Jacob Smith, and Aidan Rios had a nice eight-yard run, but otherwise the offense stalled. George West moved the ball 62 yards in eight plays to the Marion 13. With Beakley nicked up on the sideline, Sanchez played quarterback with Marion’s starters the rest of the night and showed that the offense can function effectively with him behind the center.

The 6’0” sophomore finished with 179 passing yards and a touchdown on eight completions through the controlled and timed portions of the scrimmage. Sanchez completed passes of 14 yards to Jayden Williams, 36 yards to Dillon Blakely, and 21 yards to Samuel Montoya during the first team’s second controlled possession. The Bulldogs had a promising drive going, marching 61 yards to the George West 14 in four plays before a fumble ended the scoring threat. Marion used the remaining allotted plays to cross midfield and advance to the the Longhorns’ 42, but eventually turned it over on downs. Junior running-back Aden Rackley took center stage on the Bulldogs’ first possession of the timed quarter. Rackley carried the six times for 36 yards and punctuated the drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The only pass on the drive was a 29-yard completion from Sanchez to Williams to put Marion in business at the George West eight-yard line. Senior kicker Juan Ortiz nailed the PAT to put the Bulldogs in front 7-0.

George West answered with an impressive 65-yard march of its own. Marion had a chance to turn the Longhorns over on downs at the seven-yard line, but a Longhorn running-back scampered into the end zone on the 4th-and-1 play. Marion scored again on its final possession of the timed portion, capping the seven-play, 65yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez to Dillon Blakely. The Bulldogs faced third-and-24 deep in their own territory after a holding penalty and fumbled snap resulting in lost yardage on consecutive plays, but Blakely hauled in a 41-yard toss from Sanchez at the George West 18 to keep the possession alive. Rackley rumbled through a seam for eight yards after that to set up the touchdown pass. The Longhorns got the ball back with 1:37 showing on the clock, and the Marion defense kept them out of the end zone to preserve the lead. The Bulldogs open Ryne Miller ’s third season as head coach on Friday, Sept. 4 with a 7:30 p.m. road game in Goliad.

White House Formally Labels Teachers As Essential Workers

MS Gov: No Tailgating At College Football Games

Dr. Fauci Ordered To Stop Talking Following Vocal Cord Surgery

Massachusetts Requiring All Public School Students To Get Flu Vaccines

(Washington, DC) -- The White House is formally labeling teachers as essential workers. It’s the latest move in the Trump administration’s efforts to push schools into reopening this fall despite coronavirus concerns. CNN reports Vice President Mike Pence told governors about the decision earlier this week. The Department of Homeland Security also issued guidance that considers teachers as “critical infrastructure workers” and put under the same advisories as other occupations, such as doctors and police officers. There’s guidance that would even ask teachers to head back to the classroom after potentially coming in contact with the virus.

(Washington, DC) -- We may not hear from the nation’s top infectious disease expert for some time. Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]], who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, underwent vocal cord surgery in Washington Thursday morning. He had a polyp removed and is said to be doing well. But his surgeon has reportedly ordered Dr. Fauci to stop talking while he recovers. That could be a tall order for Dr. Fauci who’s been one of the most vocal members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

(Jackson, MS) -- Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves is banning tailgating at college football games this fall. Under his executive order issued Thursday, social distancing must be enforced and seating is to be capped at 25-percent capacity. Everyone over six-years-old must wear a mask when entering and leaving the stadium. Game day rallies are also prohibited. Two of the state’s premier universities are in the S-E-C, which is moving forward with a season starting next month. The order will go into effect on August 31st.

(Undated) -- Massachusetts is taking a new step to keep schoolchildren safe. The state is becoming the first to require all public school students five-years or older to get a flu vaccine. The Massachusetts Department of Public Heath released a statement Wednesday saying kids have to get a flu shot by December 31st of this year. The only exceptions are students that have a medical or religious excuse, or if they are homeschooled.
