Guadalupe County provides COVID-19 update
GRMC reports a break in treating COVID-19 patients, county works with schools in keeping them safe By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
got kids at each end. There are not 10 chairs around a table like there used to be. They’ve had to add different lunches to school so instead of one or two lunches, now it’s four or five lunches just to eliminate all the kids from all being at a single location. One school district has grouped all kids together so that grades 1 through 3 -- this is their stuff and then they have these three classrooms and these three classrooms are associated with these toys or if they go out to recess, it’s at this time and this is the group that is with (them). So, it is making it easier so if they do have an exposure at the school, that they can identify who was involved quicker and at a more rapid pace to let the parents know that your child may have been at risk or that your child was exposed to a child who had COVID so I think they have developed the plans that work,” said Pinder.
(Seguin) – Guadalupe County is sharing the latest information in the community’s efforts to combat COVID-19. During Tuesday’s meeting, Guadalupe County Commissioners were given the opportunity to respond to the latest news announcing zero hospitalized COVID-19 patients at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. The county was notified of the information on Monday. The news comes after months of treating patients at GRMC. Patrick Pinder, the emergency management coordinator for Guadalupe County, says since June, GRMC had been experiencing a steady increase in patients with the highest number of patients being treated for COVID-19 being in the lower 40s. “You can see on July 6, the hospitalized at GRMC was at 43 and as of (Monday), it was zero. So, 263 active cases, 139 recovered and 40 deaths and you can see that those numbers have increased on the recovered and the hospitalized have gone down and those are kind of some of the numbers that we were watching. The deaths have increased because we are starting to get that information so you can see early on in July, we didn’t have as much detail from the state,” said Pinder. Again, as Pinder mentioned, Guadalupe County, expects that number of deaths to increase, due to the Texas Department of State Health Services webpage which is reporting 66 deaths. Officials say due to the lag in the reporting, the county’s overall total is behind.
Kutscher says the county, which has been working closely with school districts throughout this whole time, is sensitive to what they’ve had to endure especially while things keep changing. Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says the latest news out at “That’s the frustration with some of the schools is with TEA (Texas Education Agency) and CDC guidelines and the state GRMC provides continued hope and healing. and others -- the information that they get is ever changing “It’s definitely good news about the hospital for sure. It’s every day and I understand that everybody is getting additional encouraging to see those kinds of numbers change,” said Kutscher. information but it’s really hard to create plans for thousands of kids going back to school when every four or six or 12 hours, In his report to the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court, they get something else and say well, we can’t do that anymore,” Pinder also shared a few updates regarding area school districts said Kutscher. and their handling or preparations for students amid the COVID-19 The latest numbers also show 17 new cases – with an additional pandemic. 164 probable cases which have also not been included in “I actually visited some of the campuses. Lunchrooms don’t look local numbers. The latest number of cases brings the overall like they used to anymore. You’ve got a six-foot table and you’ve confirmed total of positive cases to 2,202.

Voters being given plenty of heads up, notice to dates, polling changes for November election WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
By Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Elections Office is making sure voters stay on top of the changes and preparations being put into place for the November 3 General Election. With the presidential race expected to draw a lot of attention, Lisa Hayes, the county’s elections administrator, says her office is doing its part to provide all the latest information in regards to voting during a pandemic. She says the upcoming election will no doubt have plenty of challenges - challenges she says are already being addressed locally. “We face several challenges with this election. We’ve got, of course, the fact that it is a presidential, so we always have a larger turnout in a presidential election. In addition, we have social distancing requirements because of COVID-19. That’s also resulted in some of our locations not being available -- our usual locations -- and we hate to change locations between elections. That’s something we try to avoid when we can so if you notice, we have 35 booked locations where we normally have 34. Living Waters (Church) in 2017 informed us that they no longer wanted to be a voting location. Well, they’ve come back. They’d like to be an election day location. We fully support that. That’s a great location to have out there on (Hwy.) 46. There’s been so much new home construction out there that we think that this will be a tremendous asset especially in a presidential election. So, they are now Vote Center 35. They’ve been added back into the flock,” said Hayes. Hayes says voters can also expect other changes. Hayes says knowing the information
now will go a long way in helping people plan accordingly. “Some other changes you’ll note, Vote Center 3, Seguin ISD Admin Building previously was Remarkable Healthcare. They are still interested in being a location but of course, at this time with COVID-19, we can’t take a chance on compromising their residents, so Seguin ISD was kind of enough to volunteer their Admin Building, Central Office. That worked great because they’re actually slated to be an early voting location as well and we know that voters like that consistency. TLU, we are still there but they’ve moved us to a larger building to make more space for our voters. CTTC is moving us to a larger room so we’ve worked it out. They are going to give us more space, so we have more room for our voters which is fantastic. The locations have been great with working with us. New Braunfels ISD, we won’t be at Klein Road Elementary but we will be across the street at the transportation building. So again, more space plus less (mingling between the voters and the students) that are at school at the time,” said Hayes. Hayes says even with the threat of COVID-19, her office realizes that people will be coming out to vote. “Even with an extended early voting period, we know that there are just some voters who like to vote election day, so we are hoping to account for that in every way possible,” said Hayes. Hayes says voters are also reminded about a few changes regarding early voting. “The next adventure, early voting, you

may have heard that the governor issued a proclamation extending early voting. Instead of starting on Oct. 19, it now starts on Oct. 13 which is a Tuesday. The 12th is Columbus Day so it’s a federal holiday, most offices are closed on that day. I don’t believe that we are doing that because we do the county fair day unless something has changed that I’ve missed. But, that extends early voting almost a week and so that has presented some challenges from several areas but the area that I was most concerned about, truthfully was that our early voting locations wouldn’t be available for that extended week. We’ve been very fortunate they were all accommodating so we have early voting starting Tuesday, Oct. 3 and ending on Friday, Oct. 30 so that’s an extensive early voting period,” said Hayes. Hayes says the early voting sites themselves have also been carefully planned out to absorb not only the anticipated crowds but to promote social distancing. “We’ve done everything we can to make this as convenient as possible. We know we are going to have a huge turnout. Our voters in the November General historically vote 50 percent early. I don’t know what we are going to see. This time in the Primary Runoff that we just had of early voters, we actually had 20 percent of them vote by mail which has never happened. So, I don’t know what we are going to see as far as mail-ballots in this election. I think we’ve got over 3,000 mail ballot applications already for November,” said Hayes. Important dates to jot down on your calendars include Oct. 13, the first day for early voting; Oct. 23, the last day to apply for a mail-in ballot and Oct. 30 the last day of early voting.

Panthers & Bulldogs not the only teams among district foes playing the waiting game in Week 1 of the high school football season (Guadalupe County) - The long awaited 2020 high school football season kicks off all over the state of Texas in Class 4A and below this Friday, but Navarro and Marion are among the many teams who have to wait until at least Week 2 to play their openers due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
restrictions, and doesn’t have a game published on its schedule until the district opener against Wimberley on Oct. 2.
Navarro’s original season debut at Port Lavaca-Calhoun was removed from the schedule when 10 NISD staff members and eight students tested positive for the coronavirus earlier this month, while a domino effect involving multiple schools forced Marion to cancel attempted Week 1 dates with Austin-Hyde Park, Somerset, and Hondo.
San Antonio-Cole falls under Bexar County’s restrictions and doesn’t open the season until Sept. 11 (Week 3) against Bandera.
As it turns out, the Panthers and Bulldogs will have plenty of company on the sidelines from teams in their own districts this Friday night. Of the six teams in Navarro’s District 14-4A-Division II, Wimberley is the only squad with a game this week. The Texans, ranked No. 4 in the state, host Canyon Lake at Texan Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Navarro (No. 9) hits the field a week later in La Vernia. Incidentally, Port Lavaca-Calhoun found a Week 1 fill-in after the Panthers cancelled their matchup. The Sandcrabs will meet Waco-LaVega this Friday in Bastrop. Austin-Achieve, Eastside Memorial, and Manor-New Tech can’t even start practicing until Weeek 3 due to Travis County’s suspension of on-campus learning until Sept. 8. First-year varsity program San Antonio-Young Men’s Leadership Academy won’t start practicing until Sept. 8 due to Bexar County
Marion is one of four teams in District 14-3A-Division I without a game on the Week 1 schedule.
That’s also the case for Randolph, who was slated to face Harper this Friday but now waits until a Week 3 matchup with Devine. Cotulla doesn’t have a game published on its schedule until district play begins in October. Among the teams strapping it up this week, Poteet visits Bandera, Lytle hits the road to face Poth, and No. 10 ranked Jourdanton plays host to Natalia.
Corpus Christi-West Oso hosts George West.
The Week 1 matchups outside of Marion’s district involving 3A Division I teams in Region IV include Llano hosting Gatesville, Blanco at Yorktown, Comfort at Brackett, the previously mentioned Aransas Pass-Rockport-Fulton and Sinton-Orange Grove contests, Edna visiting No. 7 East Bernard, Goliad at Rice Consolidated, Palacios visiting Yoakum, and VanderbiltIndustrial hosting 2A Division I No. 8 Ganado.
Friday Schedule Navarro volleyball vs. Marion, 5 p.m.
While Navarro and Marion fans wait until next week to start rooting on their teams, they’ll have plenty of noteworthy matchups in Region IV to keep their eyes on this Friday night.
Saturday Schedule
In the 4A Division II ranks, the Panthers’ season opening opponent La Vernia plays host to Cuero, No. 9 El Campo visits Gonzales at Apache Stadium, La Grange plays host to No. 7 Rockdale, Bellville hits the road to face Giddings, Columbia makes the trip to Smithville, Wharton travels to Navasota, Carrizo Springs hosts Uvalde, the afforementioned Bandera-Poteet matchup happens in Bandera, Pleasanton is home to Hondo (one of the games affecting Marion’s Week 1 cancellation), Devine plays host to 2A No. 2 Refugio, Rockport-Fulton visits Aransas Pass, Ingleside heads to Odem, Sinton is on the road to face Orange Grove, and

Trump Announces Convalescent Plasma Approval
(Washington, DC) -- The FDA is giving emergency approval to the use of “convalescent plasma” to treat the coronavirus. The treatment uses plasma from the blood of patients who have recovered from COVID-19 to treat people who are ill. President Trump called it historic and said it will save countless lives. He noted that his administration is removing barriers to allow for quick approval to new treatments and a potential coronavirus vaccine. Thousands of Americans have already been treated with convalescent plasma and it’s been found to reduce the coronavirus death rate by as much as 35-percent.
Biden Blasts Trump For COVID Response
(Undated) -- Joe Biden is again placing blame on President Trump for the fallout from the coronavirus crisis. In an interview with ABC’s World News Tonight, the Democratic presidential nominee said he doesn’t blame Trump for the virus, but for not dealing with it. He faulted Trump for saying the respiratory illness would miraculously disappear. He also pointed to studies that showed acting earlier would’ve saved thousands of lives. Biden has blamed Trump’s negligence for the number of deaths from the illness. Over 176-thousand Americans have died from the virus.

Biden Campaign Official: Little Reason To Believe Road To Vaccine Is Free Of Politics
(Washington, DC) -- A top Biden campaign official says there’s little reason to believe the journey to getting a coronavirus vaccine is free of politics. On ABC’s This Week, Deputy Campaign Manager Kate Bedingfield accused Trump of injecting politics into the overall response to the coronavirus pandemic. She said Trump has tried to discredit public health officials. When a vaccine is available, Bedingfield said the Trump Administration needs to figure out a way to get it around the country and distributed in an equitable manner.
Mets COVID-19 Tests Come Back Negative
(Flushing, NY) -- The Mets say further COVID-19 testing shows no additional positive results. The team reports that everyone who returned Thursday from Miami was tested in New York, and all tests came back negative. The Mets also say test results for close contacts of those who remained in Miami were also negative. The news comes after a player and staff member had tested positive, forcing Thursday’s game with the Marlins to be postponed. In addition, the Mets three-game weekend series with the Yankees was postponed. The Mets said their traveling party will remain in self-isolation and will continue to be tested daily.
