What would you do as a Seguin Police Officer?

Seguin PD launches 2020 Badges, Bikes and Tykes Poster Contest for kids By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Police Department wants kids to take advantage of these final days of summer by putting their art skills to the test during its first ever 2020 Badges, Bikes and Tykes Poster Contest. Mike McCann, the administrative lieutenant with the Seguin PD, says instead of totaling cancelling the annual kids’ carnival and bike raffle, the police department felt it was important to find a new and fun way to get bikes into the hands of some local kids.

decided that want to see what the kids would do if they were a Seguin Police Officer so hopefully, they want to grow up to be an officer and if so they choose here, in Seguin, their hometown, so we want to see what they would do as a Seguin Police Officer,” said McCann. McCann says bikes will be the top prizes for several lucky kids.

“We have seven different categories and we are going to pick the top three boys and girls from each category and the top three winners will win a bike. So, we’ll give away approximately 42 bicycles, one for each category, first through “We still want to engage with third place, boys and girls,” said the kids. We still want to be McCann. there for them, let them see us on a one to one level that we McCann says participating in are there and care about them the contest is easy and hopes so the best idea that we could that as many children as come up with was to have a possible enter their drawings. poster drawing contest. Seguin ISD looking to reel in last batch of students for registration WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

majority of kids have registered. However, they are looking to secure even more registrations as soon as possible.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Even though the first day of school is just six days away, Seguin ISD officials say they are still waiting on the last batch of students to register for the upcoming school year. Sean Hoffmann, chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the latest percentage shows a

“The campuses are contacting those parents who have made that indication on our online registration process which we are well over 80 percent registered right now. So, we are definitely happy about that and appreciate all the parents going online and this being the first year for us, there were some hiccups along the way but we are glad to have 80 percent registered,” said Hoffmann. Being at over 80 percent registered equates to approximately 5,600 of the district’s nearly 7,000 students. District officials say they expect and are hopeful that many of these students will be completing their online registration by the end of this week if not sooner.

As for those who have already registered, Hoffmann says there’s somewhat of an even split between those returning to campus versus those who will learn from home. “We are able to look at those numbers and for the most, we are at about 50/50. That’s kind of the ratio that we’ve been throughout the process so that has not changed a whole lot so we are anticipating about half of students for face to face and then the other half engaged in remote learning,” said Hoffmann. Again, district officials are asking parents and guardians to ensure their child’s registration as soon as possible. Online registration is available on the district’s website at seguinisd.net. Anyone having difficulty or questions is asked to contact his or her child’s school as soon as possible. The first day of school for the Seguin ISD is Tuesday, September 8.

Kids invited to draw for a chance to win a bike

POSTER, continued from page 1

“The posters need to be 14x22 inches. That’s a half a poster board. You can use colors, map pencils, anything you want. If you don’t have map pencils or colors, call us. We have some for you. We have some poster board for you as well and we want to get all drawings turned back in by Sept. 28th. We will pick the winners on Oct. 1 and we will deliver the bikes to them on Oct. 5. So, we are very excited that even though COVID got in the way of getting out and seeing the kiddos face to face, at least, we can still engage and let them know that we are thinking about them,” said McCann.

More importantly, McCann says judges will be looking for art talent of all levels.

“We want the kids to have their individual, hand drawn artwork. Let the kids see -- how do they see themselves and how do they draw themselves. Now of course, we do have the toddlers. So, the parents can assist the toddlers because they probably won’t be able to draw but we still want the kids to be involved as much as absolutely possible,” said McCann. If needed, poster board, crayons or map pencils may be picked up at the Seguin Police Department Mondays through Fridays between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The contest deadline is Monday, Sept. 28. Winners will be announced on Oct. 5.

Afterschool program WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2020

looking to fill available spots By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- If you are a parent who is going to need afterschool care, then you will want to register your child as soon as possible for the city of Seguin’s J.A.A.M Afterschool Program. The urgency to register now is due to the parks and recreation’s need to secure the program at the local elementary school that your child attends in the Seguin ISD. Erica Taft, the new assistant parks and recreation director says the program is offered at all Seguin ISD elementary schools and serves grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

Taft says the minimum of 10 children is required in order to have the program at a particular campus. “The earlier you register, the more assured you are of a space. We do have limited registration so in all transparency, we are not close to our numbers. Now as far as people kind of being concerned on not having a space, it allows us to plan and make sure that we have the right staff and just making sure that you are as organized and ready for the first day of school as possible. We are not close to closing registration at this point but the sooner we know, the better we can make sure that our staff is assigned,” said Taft. Taft says with the start of school already next week, families who need the service are asked to register as soon as possible as next week might just be too late. She says while all campuses could use a few more kids, there are at least three campuses that still need to reach their minimum of 10 students. “So that number that we (work toward), that probably won’t be

the same for next school year or even next semester. But, we need at least need 10 kids per campus to start this year off and we do have a program at every school at this time. We don’t have one at McQueeney and we’ve made arrangements to help the families that requested help at McQueeney that need childcare so we made arrangements for that school but every other school has made it and so specifically Jefferson, Patlan and Rodriguez, we are looking for more kids at those schools specifically,” said Taft. Taft says the afterschool care is only available to those who will be on campus for learning. She says the parks office is confident in its safety protocols as it has already had some practice. “We have had the luxury of having a summer to practice our COVID health protocols and so we’ve done so successfully this summer with zero cases and so we are going to continue what we do in addition to some additional safeguards required by the school district. We’ve kind of changed the way that we’ve done things and again we piloted it this summer and so we are putting kids in smaller groups and keeping the groups consistent – lots of handwashing, lots of reinforcing social distancing. It’s two to three pages of protocols that we are doing now but I think we are uniquely positioned in that we had the summer to kind of practice those protocols and see how well received they were by the kids and like we did this summer,” said Taft. Cost is $30 per week. The camp provides a snack, assistance with homework, fun activities plus games. A one-time $25 sign-up fee will be required at registration. To register, contact the parks office at 830-401-2480. Again, Jefferson, Patlan and Rodriguez Elementary school parents needing the after-school service are asked to register as soon as possible to ensure the program at that respective campus.

Nebraska Governor Speaks Out Against Medical Marijuana

White House Urged To Embrace “Herd Immunity” Approach To COVID

(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts is speaking out against medical marijuana. The governor on Monday claimed that in states where medical marijuana is legal, people show up to their jobs stoned and have a greater risk of accidents. Ricketts’ remarks come after the Nebraska Secretary of State announced that the medical marijuana initiative has gathered enough signatures and would stand up to a legal challenge.

(Washington, DC) -- The White House is being urged to embrace herd immunity to combat the COVID-19 pandemic by one of the president’s top medical advisers. Herd immunity entails allowing the virus to spread through most of the population to quickly build resistance to it. The suggestion has been floated by Scott Atlas, a neuro-radiologist from Stanford’s Hoover Institution. He’s pushing the US to adopt Sweden’s response to the outbreak, which has been widely criticized by health officials around the world.

Mnuchin: McConnell ‘Hopefully’ Unveiling COVID Relief Bill Next Week (Washington, DC) -- It appears Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is working on a new coronavirus relief bill. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin [[ mih-NEW-chin ]] told the Fox Business Network McConnell will “hopefully” have new legislation next week. His comments come as Democratic leaders and the Trump administration have failed to find common ground on a relief package. The Democrats insist on spending about three-trillion dollars, while Republicans are searching for something much less costly. The Senate won’t be back in session until September 8th.
