Award winning barbecue Donut truck to come to coming to downtown Seguin Seguin’s taste bud rescue By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Get ready to dial 9 Yum-Yum! That’s because an emergency vehicle will be rolling into town this Friday to manage all your 9-1-1 emergency DONUT needs. Whether it’s the traditional or fun flavored donuts or even strawberry cream cheese cinnamon rolls, the Hurts Donut Emergency Delivery Vehicle has been invited by Century 21 United D&D to set up shop this Friday at noon in its parking lot located next door to Taco Bell.

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The Warehouse in downtown Seguin will soon become the Burnt Bean Co. restaurant. The city of Seguin is providing a loan that will help to bring the new restaurant to the downtown area. Seguin Main Street Director Kyle Kramm says they are working with Burnt Bean Co. to help them set up pits for their barbecue restaurant located at 108 S. Austin St. Kramm says this is exciting news for the downtown area. He says people have been clamoring for more restaurants to be located in the city’s downtown. “One of our top priorities has been dining establishments in downtown due to the fact that we have limited dining in downtown currently and it’s a top priority for the community.

Through a community vision survey. It was one of the most requested things was to have more dining establishments. On top of that, Seguin currently has over $40 million leakage in dining establishments so that means people are leaving Seguin to go out to eat. That’s $40 million that we are trying to recapture and so that’s what this program that we have tonight will hopefully help solve some of that leakage by offering a Chapter 3, an incentive agreement, to Burnt Bean Barbecue in the amount of $40,000,” said Kramm.

Helping to invite the popular donut truck to Seguin is Realtor Kristine Martinez. Martinez says after hearing that the food truck gives back to the communities that it serves, she knew that she had to bring the truck to Seguin with a portion of its proceeds benefiting the Seguin ISD. See DONUT TRUCK, page 3

Kramm describes the deal as a win-win for Burnt Bean Co., the city, and for local consumers who want more places to dine in Seguin. He says the business will have to pay this money back, but the city believe this is a good investment in the city’s future. See BURNT BEAN, page 3

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) - Spending time on Facebook is not always a good thing. However, for one local woman, her time spent on Facebook has become her personal way of helping others. Stephanie Leos, who oversees the Seguin Tag Team page on Facebook, is hoping to get several backpacks filled with school supplies to students in need. The bags will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis this Sunday at Central Park. Leos’ says the backpack distribution is just an extension of her social media page which is regularly holding raffles thanks to businesses who donate small items and gifts. “This is a private page that I created basically just giving back to people especially with COVID going on. You can’t go anywhere. A lot of people are down. Basically, you tag people with gifts and once that person is tagged, then the next person gets to tag somebody else. We also do raffles. Raffle -- any money that we get from sponsors and we have so many members where the people send their donations to us and then it’s put into our Tag Team bank account. All that money goes towards things like helping people pay utility bills, our back to school drive or if somebody is just in need like diapers -- and a lot of that is done

anonymously and it’s all just the girls (members) playing little games --for whoever guesses it right, is usually tagged (for little gifts),” said Leos.

Leos says as a group, the page also brings the members together for small community mixers in Central Park. She says this weekend will be one of those times in which the group will come together to help others. “We just go downtown to Central Park and we’ll just give away the gifts that have been tag less. So, what we are doing this Sunday is instead of that, we’ll have people go pick up backpacks. So, the backpacks will be filled with supplies. We are still needing some. So if anyone is open to donate, I believe we still need rulers and map colors. Other than that, we are pretty good. Anybody needing a backpack for their child just show up. It’s first come, first served. We’ve had so many people help us get all of these things (and) definitely our sponsors. So, we have Creative Nutrition. We have Ramon Property and Maintenance, Busy Bee’z Pastries and More. If they don’t have children, the are still welcome to come and help give out the backpacks,” said Leos.

Members of Facebook’s Seguin Tag Team page prepare to distribute backpacks during Sunday’s distribution effort in downtown Seguin.

The money raised then goes to assisting individuals in need throughout the Seguin community.

more customers to the city of Seguin.

“The $40,000 will be a loan to the restaurant to cover the cost of the barbecue pits which will be held as collateral as part of this agreement. The restaurant has five years to pay back the loan and that would be collected through their one percent sales tax that goes to the city’s general fund,” said Kramm.

“It also creates kind of that Luling, Lockhart effect having the multiple barbecue places. That’s kind of what I think we can see happen here with Davila’s, Johnny’s and also now adding Burnt Bean,” said Kramm.

The restaurant is being started by chef Ernest Servantes, who previously served as the executive chef at Texas Lutheran University. Servantes, however, may be best known for being the winner of a Chopped Grill Masters Championship on the Food Network. Kramm says it will be great to have Chef Ernest’s presence in the downtown area, and adding Burnt Bean Co. to the city’s barbecue lineup will help to draw even

Kramm says that Chef Ernest has been testing the Seguin market for a few months by hosting pop-up restaurants at the Warehouse on Austin Street. Servantes is said to be excited and ready for this opportunity to get more of his food into the mouths of local residents. Servantes is partnering with the Warehouse and building’s owner, Freddie Leos. Leos is investing $50,000 to upgrade the equipment, plumbing and HVAC systems at 108 S. Austin St.

Again, the $40,000 loan for the city will be used for the installation of the commercial grade barbecue pits that will be used to smoke and grill items served at the restaurant once it opens. Kramm says Servantes plans to serve his award-winning bar-b-que of brisket, sausage, ribs and more. He adds just as delicious are the sides and desserts. Servantes says he plans on serving banana pudding, mac-n-cheese with hot Cheetos and street corn pudding. “My food is traditional Texas BBQ with a Tex Mex flare,” said Servantes. “Only town I could think of opening my restaurant is the one that welcomed me with open arms since day one, it was Seguin.” Burnt Bean is scheduled to open by Jan. 1, 2021.

“As realtors, we are always trying to figure out ways to give back to our community. With Century 21, you know Linda and everyone loves to participate in hosting things and events. We normally do like a Back to School drive. We didn’t do that this year since things are a little bit different but I was actually on Facebook and ran across a post from Hurts Donuts and they were actually, I believe in Luling and I read through it and of course I saw the donuts so that caught my eye right away but then when I saw that they actually give back to a local charity or to the school district, I was like okay, we are going to have to figure out a way to get them here to

Seguin because we are always wanting to do something that is going to give back to our community and what better way to do it than to have a donation to the school,” said Martinez. Martinez says in the name of safety, the ambulance, of course, will operate as a drive-thru -- giving everyone the opportunity to come out and try one of its tasty pastries. “The ambulance is going to be parked in our parking lot right in front of Century 21 by Taco Bell so we are going to try our best to direct traffic flow and of course, everyone is going to be wearing masks so we do want everybody to still follow COVID guidelines as far as wearing their masks. We are going to have some hand sanitizer out there but it sounds like everyone is pretty

much going to be staying in their vehicles and we are just going to be taking the orders,” said Martinez. Martinez says a DJ has also been included in today’s festivities.

Hurts Donut, based out of Katy, is known for its Hurt Dozens plus maple bacon bars and huge cinnamon rolls. The ambulance will begin taking orders at noon Friday. Both cash and cards will be accepted. Again, a portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Seguin ISD. Century 21 United D&D is located at 1498 E. Court St.

No. 9 Navarro looks to slow La Vernia passing attack in season opening road test

La Vernia) - A week later than most of the state’s sub-5A football programs opened the 2020 season, Navarro takes the field for the first time Friday evening in a road clash with the La Vernia Bears. The Panthers, ranked No.9 in Texasfootball.com’s 4A Division II state poll, had the original Week 1 opener against 4A Division I No. 8 Port Lavaca-Calhoun cancelled because an outbreak of COVID-19 cases forced Navarro ISD to suspend football for nearly two weeks. Third-year head coach Rod Blount (23-4 in two seasons at Navarro) says his student-athletes have adapted to the unique circumstances of this off-season and rolled with the punches as well as can be expected. “They’ve been great,” Blount said. “We’ve asked them to change a lot of things that they’ve been doing, that they’re used to. Coming up at separate times, bringing their own water and not being able to share with anybody, wearing masks while we’re doing stuff. We had a

setback, and they came back strong. We didn’t miss one person coming back after it, and they’ve been doing everything that they’ve been asked since day one, and they’re excited to get back on the field and get a chance to play this week.” Navarro will have to overcome the disadvantage of opening its schedule against an opponent with a game under its belt. La Vernia blew out Cuero 55-21 last Friday. The Panthers return a total of 10 players who earned All-District accolades and two All-State performers from the 2019 team that went 13-1 with an outright district championship and four-round playoff run to the 4A Division II Region IV finals.

The offensive line providing the push for Navarro’s Slot-T attack is anchored by All-State guard Cole Booker and a pair of All-District honorees in center Jon Gilbert and guard Cooper Syzdek. Nick Billings (11-34, 212 yds., 4 TD, 2 Int., 142 rush yds., 2 TD) returns for his junior season at

quarterback, but the offense will break in new starters at every other skill position. All-State fullback and single-season school rushing leader Euler DeLeon and AllDistrict tailback Johnny Alegria graduated last spring. All-District halfback Jean “MoMo” Sims, an incoming senior who moved to the U.S. from Haiti in middle school, was denied eligibility this season by the UIL because his birthday falls before the cut-off.

Kris Cavazos. The previous DC Donnie Slatter is still on the staff as an offensive assistant.

The list of accomplished returnees includes All-State safety Mark Wozniak, All-District defensive linemen Whitson

and Sergio Hernandez, All-District linebacker Andrew Guerra, and AllDistrict corners Billings and Sam Muniga. Wozniak and Guerra each averaged 11.2 tackles per game in 2019, and Muniga pulled in two interceptions. See PANTHERS, page 5

Junior half-back Brody Whitson is the team’s returning rushing leader after producing 401 yards and three touchdowns on just 39 carries in 2019. Seniors Cole Mouser and Sam Muniga man the fullback and tailback spots, with Orlando Ortiz, James Brinsley, and Aden Supak providing depth. Junior Seth Rodriguez is the listed starter at tight end, while senior Reed Fishbeck and junior Jaxen Monkerud will rotate at receiver. The Panthers feature post-season award winners in every defensive position group as they switch from a 3-4 front to a 4-2-5 scheme under recently promoted coordinator

PANTHERS, continued from page 4

Cavazos’ revamped defense will hit the ground running against a La Vernia offense that piled up 55 points and 429 total yards in last Friday’s season opener against Cuero. Senior quarterback Gage Lowry was nearly perfect, completed 12 passes in 14 attempts for 290 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions. His favorite target was senior receiver Daryl Dulak, who made the most of five receptions with 206 yards and four trips to the end zone. Lowry and Dulak were both First Team All-District honorees in 2019. Senior back Jody Gonzales paced the rushing attack with 64 yards and two scores on just nine carries. Blount says keeping Lowry from establishing a rhythm with Dulak and the Bears’ other receivers is easier drawn up than executed. “Give him different looks, mix things up for him,” the coach said. “We can’t let

him get comfortable. When he’s able to take the snap and get rid of the ball real quick, they’re very effective. We’ve got to change things up a little bit, give him some different looks, but we’ve got to bring some pressure, and we’ve got to get there quick, because he gets rid of the ball fast.” La Vernia, coached by Chris Taber, returns six defensive starters from last year’s 5-6 playoff team. Defensive linemen William Salmon (6’2”, 260 lbs) and Garrett Brandt, All-District safety Zach Ratcliff, and linebackers Leo Hudson and Justin Thompson are among the standouts on that unit, according to Blount.

Marion chases 2-0 start with road game in Goliad (Goliad) - The Marion Bulldogs look to start a football season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2013 when they travel to face the Goliad Tigers on Friday. Both squads were involved in defensively dominated struggles last week. Marion opened Ryne Miller’s third season as head coach with a 14-13 road win over Karnes City on Saturday, as junior quarterback Tanner Beakley and senior kicker Juan Ortiz produced the tying touchdown and go-head PAT kick with only 40 seconds remaining.

Goliad, coached by Kevin Salazar, found the sledding tough in an 18-15 loss to Altair-Rice. The Tigers eliminated Marion in the second round of the 2018 playoffs and finished 10-3 that year, but graduation gutted the roster the following off-season, and they only went Friday’s game in La Vernia kicks off at 1-9 in 2019. 7:30 p.m. The contest will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Salazar’s Slot-T attack only produced 92 Pre-game coverage starts at 6:50 p.m. The Bears held Cuero to 298 total yards and 3.7 yards per carry on the ground. The Gobblers only managed a single touchdown in the first half as La Vernia built a commanding 35-7 halftime lead.

total yards (48 rushing, 44 passing) and 2.2 yards per carry in the loss to AltairRice. Sophomore running-back Gage Barrera, an All-District selection on varsity as a freshman in 2019, was never able to get going last week, as the Raiders limited him to 15 yards on eight carries. Barrea and quarterback Reese Ruhnke scored the Tigers’ touchdowns. That duo runs into a Marion defense that piled up 22 tackles for loss and 12 sacks to go with two turnovers in a dominant opener against Karnes City. Senior linebacker Jayden Williams recorded four sacks and seven TFL, defensive lineman Ronnie Winbush had three sacks, and linebacker Willie Davis added two. Sophomore linebacker Kross Kelso led the unit with 13 tackles and intercepted a pass, while classmate Dominic Castellanos recovered a fumble after Samuel Montoya strip.

A Goliad defense with seven returning starters kept the Altair-Rice game competitive. The Tigers yielded just 271 total yards, though 259 of those came on the ground. “Their defensive line definitely stands out on film,” Miller said. “They’re big bodies, they move really well. So I think for us, get the run game going early, making sure our guys are kind of settled in pretty quick, and hopefully drive the field with the football.” Aden Rackley led the Bulldogs with 72 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in the opener. Beakley ran for 51 yards and a score on 15 carries, and looks to improve in the passing game this week after going 7-20 for 76 yards against Karnes City. Friday’s opening kickoff at Tiger Stadium in Goliad is set for 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report at 6:50 p.m. on KWED 1580AM and Seguintoday.com.
