Local contributions to the arts Lights of Hope Drive Thru event set for this Saturday in Seguin officially recognized Lobbying in support of cancer research comes home to Seguin

Seguin Commission on the Arts honors recipients during virtual ceremony

By Cindy AguirreHerrera

(Seguin) -- Despite the current fight against COVID-19, one national effort is not giving up its fight against CANCER.

Lydia Robles, Outstanding Contributor of the Arts (Seguin) – The Seguin Commission on the Arts isn’t letting this year stop its annual recognition of those in the local art community. On Wednesday evening, the group held a virtual awards ceremony at the Texas Theatre where Seguin Mayor Don Keil was on hand to announce this year’s recipients. In a typical year, these awards

are presented at the group’s annual Art at the Texas event. “Since we were unable to have Art at the Texas this year, we wanted to make sure we still recognized our local organizations and individuals who contribute so much to the art community in Seguin,” said Cathy Kirk, chair of the commission on the arts. In its efforts to take a national stand locally, members of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network will be hosting a Drive Through Lights of Hope Event this Saturday night in the Silver Center parking lot.

Barbara Behal, a national advocate for Seguin and Guadalupe County, says the event will feature luminaria bags with names in honor of or in memory of your loved ones.

Robles, the director of theatre at Seguin High School.

This year, the commission called for nominations in three categories: Outstanding Contributor to the Arts, Youth Artist of the Year, and Art Organization of the year.

Robles, who has been teaching in the SHS Department for the last 10 years, was recognized for her multitude of productions that she has directed and co-produced. She is being honored for her dedication to the program whether it be building sets, sewing costumes or just doing whatever needs to be done in order to bring quality productions to the stage. The commission on the arts says her love of the arts spreads to each of her students as she helps them run lines and organizes trips for them to experience iconic places like Broadway. They say Roble’s dedication to building the youth arts in Seguin makes her more than worthy of receiving the 2019 Outstanding Contributor to the Arts Award.

In a year that has been particularly hard on the arts community, group members say the commission was proud to be able to honor this year’s three winners. Presented with this year’s Outstanding Contributor to the Arts Award is Lydia

Earning this year’s Youth Artist of the Year Award is Jerry Silva, a ballet folklorico intern with Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin. The commission on the arts says Silva, a recent high school graduate has been dancing at the non-profit cultural arts center program for the past seven years and is now sharing what he has learned as a youth educator.

Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin Arts, Arts Organization of the Year

During this time with Teatro, Silva has also been a member of its Conjunto Juan Seguin Program, taking accordion lessons. Currently, he serves as one of Teatro’s Ballet Folklorico interns teaching approximately 25 students each week. Also topping the list of awards is the 2020 Art Organization of the Year. Honored with this year’s award is Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin. The Seguin Commission on the Arts says in its 37 years, Teatro has made it its mission to promote a better understanding of the Mexican American culture by the teaching, study, practice, and performance of the Arts. They say through its regular performances and education opportunities for youth and adults alike, they have been able to preserve its culture -- passing it on to future generations. Kirk says the Seguin Commission on the Arts works to promote the arts in Seguin and recognize others who work to bring cultural and artistic values, events, and artifacts to Seguin.

Jerry Silva, Youth Artist of the Year

“The arts are thriving in Seguin,” said Kirk. “The Commission looks forward to recognizing locals who create and supports the arts community.”

Navarro looks to bounce back in home opener vs. Needville, Friday’s game to air on KWED

(Geronimo) - Navarro hits the home turf at Erwin-Lee Field for the first time this season when the Needville Blue Jays make the trip to Geronimo on Friday. The Panthers look to rebound from a season opening 28-19 road loss to La Vernia that was marred by six turnovers and seven penalties. Head coach Rod Blount and his staff identified a number of teachable moments from the first game after not having the benefit of a preseason scrimmage to iron out those kinks.

“The holding calls, the penalties, the stuff that normally you can fix after the first scrimmage and work to get a little bit better on each week,” Blount said. “Same thing with ball security and all that, making sure our hands are inside, and making sure we’re protecting the football. That’s stuff we didn’t get to see in scrimmages, but we’ve got it on tape now, we see what’s going wrong, the kids see it, and it’s stuff we can work on this week to get corrected.”

Needville travels to Geronimo with a 1-1 record after edging Livingston 36-35 in Week

Current senior Walker Warncke has filled the void impressively through two games, piling up 337 rushing yards and six touchdowns while averaging 7.5 yards per carry. Quarterback Trevor Baker has only connected on 18 of his 46 passing attempts with four interceptions, but those completions have gone for 352 yards. Blake Maresh leads the receiving corps with 195 yards and a touchdown on nine catches.

Senior linebacker Andrew Guerra (26) and the Navarro defense look to slow down a Needville offense averaging 401 total yards per game in Friday’s home opener. Photo by Jacqueline Springs.

The Blue Jays, coached by Mike Giles, entered the season with big shoes to fill at runningback in the wake of All-State performer Ashton Stredick’s graduation. Stredick, now at Princeton, ran for 3,105 yards and 37 touchdowns last fall to help Needville go 10-3 and advance to the 4A Division I regional semifinals.

“They spread you out like La Vernia did, but they’re going to be a lot more run heavy than La Vernia was, but a balanced offense,” Blount said. “They’ve got a really good runner in Warncke, and Baker does a great job when he pulls it and keeps it on the zone read, so they’re going to keep you on your toes. You’ve got to play every aspect of defense, coming up and stopping the run and stopping the pass, because they can hurt you on both.” Friday’s matchup should be a physical battle

between two teams who love to run the football. Navarro’s Slot-T attack showed potential through the rust with a “by committee” approach in the loss to La Vernia. Seven different Panthers combined for 237 rushing yards, with fullback Cole Mouser averaging a team-high 7.2 yards per carry. Navarro faces a Needville defense that allowed averages of 339 total yards, 212.5 rushing yards, and 5.2 yards per carry in its first two games. The standouts on that unit include All-District defensive tackle Blake Boenisch (6’3”, 300 lbs), fellow defensive lineman Bryant Jones, and the aforementioned Warncke, who earned AllDistrict recognition in the secondary last season. The Panthers turned in a strong performance against La Vernia, allowing just three offensive touchdowns and only one scoring drive longer than 49 yards. Navarro held the Bears to 219 total yards and just 1.7 yards per carry on rushing plays. All-State safety Mark Wozniak intercepted a pass and pounced on a fumble, while Orlando Ortiz and Sergio Hernandez each came up with fumble recoveries. Friday’s kickoff at Erwin-Lee Field is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on Seguin radio station KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:50 with the Marion coaches show. Live coverage from the stadium begins at 7:00.

Marion opens home schedule vs. Comfort in battle of unbeaten For Schedule, click here or see Page 7

(Marion) - The Marion Bulldogs play in front of the home crowd at Veterans Stadium for the first time in 2020 when they host the Comfort Bobcats in a Friday night matchup of 2-0 teams. Marion rallied to a pair of one-point road wins in each of its first two games, edging Karnes City 14-13 in Week 1 and Goliad 2423 last week. A victory over Comfort would give the Bulldogs a 3-0 record for the first time since 2008. Coach Brandon Easterley’s Bobcats blanked Brackett 42-0 in the season opener and followed with a commanding 30-6 triumph over Mason last Friday. Comfort’s Wing-T offense has utilized a stable of running-backs to churn out averages of 355 rushing yards per game and 9.1 yards per carry. Chris Rodriguez leads that group with 200 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, while Jose Neri enters Friday with 171 yards and three scores on just 10 attempts. Oscar Falcon returns as the starting quarterback from last year’s 10-3 regional semifinalist. He threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns while running for 167 and two scores in the first two games.

“I think the big thing with those guys is they’re extremely athletic,” Marion head coach Ryne Miller said. “They had a great year last year, and hats off to Coach Easterley over there, but I think the big thing with those guys is making sure that we’re getting lined up, and getting in the play that they need to be. Like I said, they’re extremely athletic - the offensive line doesn’t have a whole lot of size to them, but they get after it, and they do a great job of doing that.” Marion counters with a versatile attack led by junior quarterback Tanner Beakley (222 passing yards, 2 TD, 83 rushing yards, 2 TD), junior running-back Aden Rackley (129 yds., TD), and receivers Dominic Castellanos (7 rec., 82 yds., TD) and Jayden Williams (5 rec., 83 yds., TD). Sophomores Castellanos and Kross Kelso have been defensive standouts in their first two varsity games, with Kelso recording a team-high 28 tackles, Castellanos notching 15 stops and a fumble recovery, and each player collecting an interception. Southern Miss commit Jayden Williams enters Friday with four sacks and seven tackles-for-loss.

Marion and Comfort kick off Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Veterans Stadium. A complete interview with Coach Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report at 6:50 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.
