(Seguin) – Niagara Botting is not only partnering to host this year’s Niagara Perk Your Park competition, but it’s also taking this final day of the online competition to cheer on the communities looking to win.

Today is the final day to vote in the competition that began on Aug. 7. Seguin’s Max Starcke Park is one of nine national parks systems that are competing for one of three $75,000 grand prizes.

At the end of today, the top three communities who were able to solicit the most votes will become the winners of the contest.

If named a winner, Seguin will use the money towards the replacement of the old Kids Kingdom Playscape that was torn down earlier this year at Max Starcke Park East. Park, pg. 3

Road rage incident results in fight in area school parking lot

(Cibolo} – A road rage incident resulted in a fight between two drivers in a Cibolo elementary school parking lot. Cibolo Police officials say the incident was reported Thursday morning in the parking lot of Watts Elementary School located in the 100 block of Deer Meadow Blvd.

The investigation revealed that the road rage situation initially began in the city of Schertz. Once both vehicles arrived at the school, Bryce Collin Newburg, 38, of St. Hedwig approached the other driver

in the school parking lot and assaulted him before fleeing in his vehicle.

Witnesses at the school were able to provide officers with a description of Newburg and his

vehicle. He was later found and arrested by a deputy from the Guadalupe County Constable’s Pct. 3 Office.

The victim, a 41-year-old male of Schertz, was assessed by Schertz EMS and later treated and released at the scene. Officials note that students and staff were not in danger during the incident.

Newburg was transported to the Guadalupe County Jail. He faces charges of assault causing bodily injury.

(Seguin) -- Car seats work. Just ask Mandy Watson who was in a head-on crash with her 11-month-old and 5-year-old as they were going to lunch more than a decade ago.

“Immediately after the crash, I climbed in the back seat. In that moment I knew it worked. I knew their car seats did everything they were supposed to do, because they were still intact, still in place, and I could hear my babies crying,” said Watson.

Watson had been trained to properly secure her children in their car seats, preventing an unthinkable tragedy. That kind of training is exactly what TxDOT’s “Save Me With a Seat” campaign will teach as it kicks off in September to coincide with National Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 17– 23, 2023.

“It’s extremely important that parents schedule a car seat check today,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Ensuring car seats are installed correctly is one of the most important things a parent or caregiver can do to protect the smallest occupants in a crash.”

Around 46% of all car seats are misused as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The campaign invites parents to schedule a free car seat safety check by visiting SaveMeWithASeat.org and entering their ZIP code to find the nearest TxDOT traffic safety specialist in their area. TxDOT offers free car seat safety checks year-round.

During September, the “Save Me With a Seat” campaign will include the “Are You Ready for Takeoff?” interactive educational experience and will make stops in eight Texas cities. Seat, pg. 3

Over the years, Canela says the contest has helped to revitalize, restore and even incorporate amenities that improve the quality of life for all.

“We have done some really creative beautiful things at these parks in the past. We’ve done butterfly gardens. We’ve done murals. We’ve done upgraded playground equipment and also the wonderful thing is all of our Niagara team members come out and volunteer so it’s a beautiful experience for our team members as well to interact with the community so just get out there and vote and make sure your park is the winning park,” said Canela.

The campaign’s kickoff event in Houston features retired NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, a father of five who is passionate about safety and educating children. The experience will remind parents of the importance of always buckling up their children.

Bulldogs Fall to Ave Maria (FL) in Home Opener, 27-14

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran football (1-2) fought hard but dropped their home opening matchup to NAIA opponent Ave Maria (FL) (1-1), 27-14, at Bulldog Stadium.

The Bulldogs would drive down field on their opening drive 65 yards but would come up empty - missing a 28-yard field goal. The Gyrenes would respond with their first touchdown of the night. They would follow up with a field goal to jump out to a 10-0 first quarter lead.

The Bulldogs would get on the board courtesy of a 74-yard drive to start the second quarter as running back Jacob Forton (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) would score on a two-yard rush. Texas Lutheran would shut the Gyrenes out for the remainder of the half.

Ave Maria would come out in the second half and immediately find the end zone as running back Bryan Stiemke found the end zone for the first of his two touchdowns. Stiemke was the story of the night, rushing for 264 yards for

the Gyrenes while adding 66 yards receiving. Ave Maria would add an early fourth quarter field goal to take a 20-7 lead. Forton found the end zone for the second time to shrink the Gyrene lead to 20-14 with nine minutes remainingleaving the Bulldogs with an opportunity for a comeback victory. Stiemke would rush in for the dagger with two minutes remaining - bringing the game to its final score of 27-14 and spoiling the Texas Lutheran home opener.

Eddie (Louise) Lutz was born to Volcient Smith on October 11, 1924, in Fort Worth, TX, and passed away on August 23, 2023, at the age of 98. She was sent to an orphanage at age 4. She graduated in 1945 and worked for various companies before meeting her first husband, Herbert Odom. They moved to San Antonio, where she worked as a weapons manager for the Air Force.

She was widowed at age 33 and married husband number two, Vivian Vaillancourt two years later. His daughters, Candy and Susan, became part of her family.

She fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse by studying to become an LVN while volunteering as a Gray Lady at Wilford Hall in San Antonio. She and her daughter both graduated from nursing school together. She later worked in private duty nursing and cared for her husband and mother until they passed away.

Her family was everything to her, beyond just biology. She embraced her church community, mission trips, and close friends who became like siblings.

After marrying Tildon Lutz, her third husband, she relocated to Seguin, TX. Together, they purchased six acres along the Guadalupe River.

With this marriage, her family grew as Tildon had four children who brought along their own children and grandchildren.

Since Tildon was a Mason, Louise became a member of the Order of

the Eastern Star, Seguin Lodge 555. She once again expanded her family to include all the brothers and sisters of the organization. She cherished her time as a member and, later, as a Worthy Matron.

Survived by sons Roy Odom, and Delton Lutz, daughters, June Barnhouse, Candy Egbert, Shirley Grobe, and Janet Waer, grandchildren Kristin Scheffer, Robert Barnhouse, and Erin Barnhouse, and multiple other step-grandchildren, nieces Louise Jewett, Ann Foxworth, and nephew Kenneth Britton, great-grandsons Cole Scheffer, Cade Scheffer and multiple step-great-grandchildren.

Louise is preceded in death by Volcient Smith-Britton, Beth Nalson, Dorothy Stovall, Mary McMullen, Bill Britton, Susan Vaillancourt, Ricky Lutz and her husbands Herbert Odom, Vivian Vaillancourt, and Tildon Lutz.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 10 a.m. at La Trinidad United Methodist Church in Seguin with the Rev. Ron Welborn officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Another memorial service is being planned in Maryland, later in the fall.

Darlene Estelle Machemehl, age 78, of Seguin, Texas passed away on September 14, 2023. Darlene was born on April 16, 1945, in Seguin, Texas to Sophie (Davis) and John Collins.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmom, and great-grandmom.

Darlene is preceded in death by her parents, her son Darrell Machemehl, and her sisters Estelle Cassell and Jody Collins.

Treat Covid Boosters Like Yearly Flu Shot

(Undated) -- New COVID-19 boosters are available this week and can be found at a local pharmacy. Public health doctors say COVID boosters should be treated like flu shots and people should get them each year. They’re updated to target the specific viruses likely to circulate in this specific fall and winter. But there’s been a mixed reaction. When surveyed, about half of adults say they’ll get an annual covid booster, and half say they won’t. Across the nation, the number of covid cases is up and the CDC says hospitalizations are up nearly nine-percent in the past few weeks. Deaths are up ten-and-a-half-percent.

Biden Announces Actions On “Cancer Moonshot”

(Washington, DC) -- President Biden is announcing a series of new actions as part of his goal to end cancer. While meeting with members of his Cabinet today, Biden announced a 240-million dollar funding boost for research projects to help improve cancer and prevention treatment. The president has set an ambitious goal to cut U.S. cancer deaths in half over the next 25 years. The president’s son Beau Biden died at the age of 46 from brain cancer in 2015.

Study: Tobacco, Marijuana Linked To Higher Risk Of Depression,

(San Francisco, CA) -- A new study suggests that using tobacco and marijuana is tied to much higher risk of depression and anxiety. Researchers at the University of California-San Francisco studied nearly 54-thousand U.S. adults and found that those who use both substances experienced depression or anxiety at almost twice the rate of people who didn’t use either one. The lead researcher said smoking weed and tobacco doesn’t help in dealing with anxiety and depression and might make mental health issues worse in the long run.

U.S. Forest Service Awards $1-Billion In Grants To Boost Green Space Access

(Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is awarding more than a billion dollars in grants to give Americans more access to trees and green spaces. The U.S. Forest Service announced today it will issue 385 grants to increase access to trees and nature in cities, towns, and suburbs around the country. Research has shown that tree cover reduces the impact of extreme heat, including lowering the number of heat-related deaths.
