Guadalupe Clinic to participate in The BIG Give

Donors needing to help purchase blood pressure machines

(Seguin) — It’s the 10th year in which local non-profits in Seguin and Guadalupe County hope to capitalize Big during this year’s The Big Give 2023. Among those looking for donations during the 24-hour online fundraiser is the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center’s Guadalupe Clinic.

The Big Give begins today at 6 p.m. and continues through 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Guadalupe Clinic will join the likes of 400 other organizations across the state who will be soliciting donations for their respective goals. For the Guadalupe Clinic, the money is needed for the purchase of 100

blood pressure machines.

Lori Campos, the coordinator for the local clinic says, in effort to purchase 100 blood pressure machines, they will need to collect approximately $2,500.

“In the past, we have received little grants for maybe only 15 at a time but when I’m looking at a clinic of 600 patients --

SHS invites community to Homecoming Pep Rally Tonight

(Seguin) -- Go Matadors! The Seguin community is invited to help cheer on Seguin High School during tonight’s annual Homecoming Community Pep Rally at Matador Stadium.

Student Council Advisor Heather Brown says the first change that folks will notice is that the annual tradition has changed to a Wednesday.

“Coach (Craig) Dailey requested that we move it to Wednesday so all students can participate in it because when we do it on Thursday, then the JV and freshman football players and anybody with sports on Thursday can’t go participate. So that’s today. Gates are going to open at 6:30 and we will have the music of mariachi Matador, our award-winning Mariachi kicking things off right around 6:45 and then the presentation of colors will start shortly after that at 7 o’clock,” said Brown.

Brown says despite this change, all other traditions and groups will be on hand to celebrate the evening.

“The national anthem will be done by the choir, the presentation by the ROTC here on campus, the Matador Band, we have the return of Mini Mats this year who have taken some lessons with our cheer team here on campus and will be pepping everybody up and doing performances which is my personal favorite. We have Ballet Folklorico, the Star Steppers, the high school cheer, the drumline and then

the volleyball and football team will be doing some speaking as well and then we will introduce our Homecoming Court that was elected by our student body and then at the very end, it’s the traditional burning of the M where we light up a giant M on the back stands,” said Brown.

This year, the student council chose to go with a Gold Out theme. Brown says the idea is to showcase the high school and community as one.

“Just think about things that were traditions in the past with the community to kind of bridge more of the high school with the community and so, one of those things that we brought back this year was the Paint the Town Gold where different clubs on campus partner with businesses to paint their windows in school spirit just to bridge that a little bit better,” said Brown.

Each day this week, students at the high school continue to celebrate with various dress days and spirit contests.

Again, stadium gates open today at 6:30 p.m. with the pep rally starting at 7:05 p.m. The Homecoming Pep Rally is free and will be held on the home side of the stadium only. This year’s festivities continue on Friday with the football game against MacArthur High School. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. It will be followed by the homecoming dance in the SHS Patio on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Give, continued.

of those 600, I’m looking at maybe 200 patients that have blood pressures issue, congestive heart failure -- all of those who should really have access to a blood pressure machine when they go home. A lot of times when we only have these few grants where we are limited to how many machines we get, we have to pick and choose who we give them to, and we shouldn’t have to pick and choose. We should be able to say, ‘hey you’ve got blood pressure, you are having issues, here, we have machine.’ That’s what we are striving for at this time just to have access to enough blood pressure machines here at the clinic so we can handout to our patients,” said Campos.

Like last year, The Harvey E. Najim Charitable Foundation has offered to match each donation dollar to dollar for those who donate Thursday from 11:10 to 11:15 a.m. Again, only those donations that are received within that five minutes will be twice as valuable thanks to the nonprofit foundation supporting GRMC.

Campos says she appreciates this opportunity to be a part of the receiving end of The Big Give. She says not only do they get to pull in some much-needed resources, but they also get the chance to share more about the clinic and how it is there to help those in the local community.

“The Guadalupe Clinic is a hospital department. We were created with the intent of helping patients who have no access to medical care. It can be the person who is working 24/7. They work at a job. They can’t afford the insurance, or they don’t have insurance available to them. It can be the person in the community who has been admitted recently and these diagnoses just got hit. So, the program is available for patients who have chronic illnesses that all they need is medical are and access to a program for the medicines which

is what the Guadalupe Clinic does. We not only give them access to medical care. We also send them to a program that is also part of the hospital. That is the Prescription Assistance Program where they are going to get their medicines all for $15 a month. But the Clinic helps prevent them from having to go to the ER -- hopefully preventing them from a future hospital admission because we are going to help them get them their prescriptions that they need and the care that they need temporarily,” said Campos.

In fact, she says the timing for the online giving couldn’t have come at a better time for the growing program.

“This clinic is growing. Just this week alone, we had three new patients. Every week, we average between two to three new patients along with our existing patients so definitely, we are going to make use of those machines 100 percent,” said Campos.

Officials say patients without a blood pressure machine come in every two weeks simply to monitor their health. Often times they say theses appointments are missed due to lack of transportation or the inability to pay for gas. Many patients they say simply can’t spare the additional $25 to purchase their own machine.

Campos says the Guadalupe Clinic is an important program and looks forward to being there for anyone who needs it.

“This is for all individuals that are 18 and over and they live in Guadalupe County. This is for local residents who are in need of care. Just reach out to the Guadalupe Clinic. All they have to do is ask and I’ll be more than happy to give them the resources that they need,” said Campos.

Donors wishing to see other groups needing help who would like to donate to the Guadalupe Clinic are asked to visit www.thebiggivesa.org

Eddie (Louise) Lutz was born to Volcient Smith on October 11, 1924, in Fort Worth, TX, and passed away on August 23, 2023, at the age of 98. She was sent to an orphanage at age 4. She graduated in 1945 and worked for various companies before meeting her first husband, Herbert Odom. They moved to San Antonio, where she worked as a weapons manager for the Air Force.

She was widowed at age 33 and married husband number two, Vivian Vaillancourt two years later. His daughters, Candy and Susan, became part of her family.

She fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse by studying to become an LVN while volunteering as a Gray Lady at Wilford Hall in San Antonio. She and her daughter both graduated from nursing school together. She later worked in private duty nursing and cared for her husband and mother until they passed away.

Her family was everything to her, beyond just biology. She embraced her church community, mission trips, and close friends who became like siblings.

After marrying Tildon Lutz, her third husband, she relocated to Seguin, TX. Together, they purchased six acres along the Guadalupe River.

With this marriage, her family grew as Tildon had four children who brought along their own children and grandchildren.

Since Tildon was a Mason, Louise became a member of the Order of

the Eastern Star, Seguin Lodge 555. She once again expanded her family to include all the brothers and sisters of the organization. She cherished her time as a member and, later, as a Worthy Matron.

Survived by sons Roy Odom, and Delton Lutz, daughters, June Barnhouse, Candy Egbert, Shirley Grobe, and Janet Waer, grandchildren Kristin Scheffer, Robert Barnhouse, and Erin Barnhouse, and multiple other step-grandchildren, nieces Louise Jewett, Ann Foxworth, and nephew Kenneth Britton, great-grandsons Cole Scheffer, Cade Scheffer and multiple step-great-grandchildren.

CDC Recommends COVID Boosters For All But Many Won’t Comply (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is recommending a COVID booster for everyone six-months and up but there’s strong evidence that many people won’t comply. Vaccine mandates, strong public outreach and the urgency that once led to high COVID vaccination rates is over. The CDC admits it’ll be a challenge to get many folks to roll up their sleeves with 75-percent of Americans skipping last year’s booster. Gregg Gonsalves, an epidemiologist at Yale University, says urging people to get COVID boosters has only worked for Democrats, college graduates and those earning 90-thousand-dollars a year or more. This as COVID hospitalizations and deaths continue to rise with nearly 73-hundred Americans dying of COVID in the last three months.

Obesity Is Growing Contributing Factor In Heart Disease Deaths (Dallas, TX) -- Obesity is a growing contributing factor in heart disease deaths. Research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association shows that it was cited on death certificates three times as often in 2020 than in 1999. The raw data, which came from the CDC, revealed more than 280-thousand heart disease deaths linked to obesity in 2020. The highest mortality rate was in the Black population. The CDC says obesity, which is a major risk for heart disease, affects 115-million people in the U.S. including more than one in four adults.

Prosecutors say officers found one kilo of fentanyl inside a closet. Officials say the owner, 36-year-old Grei Mendez, and alleged cohort Carlisto Acevedo Brito are facing charges that include murder, manslaughter and assault. Police are searching for a third suspect, who they believe to be the owner’s husband.
