(Seguin) – It’s not every day that products of Seguin graduate and then return home to serve as a professional in their community especially when that professional is a doctor. With jobs in the health field already being limited and competitive, this year’s welcoming of Dr. Kelsey Reyes to the office of Dr. George Walker, DDS & Associates has already been rewarding for the 2012 Seguin High School graduate.

“My passion for dentistry, it began when I was younger, and I continued through high school. I was still interested in the dental field and I remember when I was in college, I decided to observe some of the different specialties in the dental field, so I still had a huge passion for it. I fell in love with it even more and then I applied to all three dental schools in Texas. I wanted to stay in Texas so I didn’t apply anywhere out of state and I decided to go to the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio so luckily, I was blessed to get in on my first try,” said Dr. Reyes.
has once again made the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” selections among regional colleges in the West, ranking second on the list for “Best Value,” and fourth overall. This is the sixth consecutive year TLU has been featured on the “Best Value” rankings. Other notable recognitions include TLU’s spot as No. 5 for Top Performers in Social Mobility-the second year TLU has received this honor.
Dr. Reyes says although she began as an associate for Dr. Walker in August, she had already begun periodically observing in the office since March. She says of course, the COVID-19 pandemic, made things a bit more difficult in her final steps to becoming licensed. That’s because tests were constantly being cancelled or rescheduled. “I’m very pleased that the strengths of TLU are being recognized again,” said TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell. “In particular, being acknowledged in the categories of ‘Best Value’ and ‘Social Mobility’ connects to our mission of being an accessible institution that identifies with and works to serve our region through our commitment to academic excellence, servant leadership, and career development.” See BEST VALUE, page 3

TLU named among the top colleges in which to work for TLU, a 2020 Great Colleges to Work For® by ModernThink
(Seguin) – TLU is happy to announce another accolade on the heels of its U.S. News recognition. For the ninth consecutive year, Texas Lutheran University (TLU) is again one of the nation’s great colleges to work for according to a survey by ModernThink. TLU officials say the Great Colleges to Work For® survey is one of the largest and most respected workplace recognition programs in the country. Now in its 13th year, it recognizes colleges that get top ratings from their employees regarding workplace practices and policies.
Of the 221 institutions that participated, 79 were recognized as a 2020 “Great College to Work For” and only 42 were selected for the Honor Roll, including TLU. TLU officials say this is also the seventh year in a row TLU has received an Honor Roll designation. Results of this survey are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with TLU included among the small universities with 2,999 students or fewer. The survey is noted for recognizing the outstanding workplace and innovative educational experiences of the institutions selected in

“This kind of external recognition underscores the many strengths of the TLU community,” said TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell. “We know that our ability to serve our students well is directly tied to the work and commitment of our faculty and staff members, and the environment in which their work is carried out. I’m proud of this recognition while also seeing it as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that our communityfocused environment continues to Relationship, Teaching be strong and healthy.” Environment (Faculty Only), and Tenure Clarity and Process The ModernThink team of organizational development (Faculty Only/4-year Only). experts say they are dedicated to “The institutions participating in helping colleges follow through the 2020 Great Colleges to Work and capitalize on feedback from For® program deserve special employees and benchmark data kudos for their commitment from peers to drive meaningful to being good stewards of change at their institutions.

the calling to come back here and I was lucky enough that Dr. Walker was looking for someone to kind of mentor and kind of pass down his knowledge. When I started my first day here, I was driving from San Antonio to Seguin and I was like ‘man, I can’t believe that I’m actually back here’ – I saw the development of it and just kind of seeing that I can be a greater part of the community that I grew up in. It’s awesome,” said Dr. Reyes.
However, in the end, she says everything finally came together. “It kind of gets competitive but I had some great mentors. Dr. (Clark) Colville was a huge help in that. He actually wrote one of my letters of recommendation so always grateful to him for that but it just was a passion that started out when I was younger and then kind of moved on with it along with my life and I turned it into a career and then the opportunity arose and Dr. Walker was looking for an associate at the time when I got out so I decided to apply and I’m so lucky that they decided to keep me around and I was excited to come back and serve the community of Seguin and kind of give back a bit, said Dr. Reyes. What has been most exciting for Dr. Reyes is that this personal journey has returned her home. She says it’s an honor to be serving the community of Seguin. “Throughout dental school, I think something always drove me back to kind of where I came from and knowing my roots and I think when the opportunity arose to work here in Seguin, I think it was kind of a calling. When I found out that this opportunity was available, I wasn’t even looking here in Seguin and I really sat down and thought about it and I was like I think this was
Dr. Reyes says she is enjoying her experience so far and is committed to serving her patients just as if they were family. “It’s always nice when I see someone come in and I’m like I remember you or they know my family and they recognize me. It makes me feel good and I’m like I’m actually here getting to do a way bigger part than I could have ever dreamed of as a child,” said Dr. Reyes. While in dental school, Dr. Reyes was recognized with multiple awards including the International College of Dentists Humanitarian Award and the UT Health RIDE Award for Research. During her time in the program, she also served as the Dental Student Leader at the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic. The office of Dr. George E. Walker, DDS & Associates is located at 1255 Ashby St. in Seguin.

Rankings are based on data collected from several categories, including academic reputation, admissions selectivity, faculty resources, retention, graduation rates and alumni support. U.S. News & World Report then ranks colleges and universities based upon region and classification. Regional schools focus almost entirely on the undergraduate experience and offer a broad range of programs in the liberal arts and in fields such as business, nursing, and education. TLU earns the No. 2 spot in the West for “Best Value” based on its high overall ranking combined with modest net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid. According to U.S. News & World Report, these are schools that are above average academically and cost considerably less than many other schools when the financial aid that they dispense, in the form of need-based grants and scholarships, is considered. Only schools ranked in or near the top half of their categories are included, because the publication considers the most significant values to be among colleges that are above average academically. Social mobility measures how well schools graduated students who received federal Pell Grants (those typically coming from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, though most Pell Grant money goes to students with a total family income below $20,000).

Five States Added To DC’s COVID High-Risk State List
(Washington, DC) -- Five states are being added to Washington DC’s high-risk state list. That means folks coming from Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, West Virginia, and Wyoming must self-quarantine for two weeks once they enter the nation’s capital. That applies to people coming to the district for non-essential travel. The good news is three states were removed from the list. They are California, Hawaii, and Ohio.
CDC Reverses Position On COVID Airborne Transmission Citing Website Error
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC has suddenly reversed its position on airborne transmission of COVID-19, citing a website error. The federal health agency had posted new guidelines warning that indoor transmission of the virus is the key to protecting against its spread. The statement also said the virus can be transmitted over a distance larger than six feet. That statement has now been removed with The Washington Post quoting a top CDC official as saying, “That does not reflect our current state of knowledge.”

On CNN’s State of the Union, Admiral Brett Giroir [[ ger-WAHR ]] says we have to wait for the trials to run their course and prove the vaccine is safe and effective. On testing, Giroir said it’s not practical to test every student every week. He also emphasized the importance of testing for young people and areas experiencing outbreaks.
HHS Sec Cites Progress Against COVID-19 Thanks To Americans
(Washington, DC) -- The secretary of Health and Human Services is crediting the American people for progress made against the coronavirus over the last three months. On NBC’s Meet The Press, Alex Azar praised Americans for doing various things to slow the spread like wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. He said the actions of the American people are acting as a bridge to bigger and better things to come in the fight against the virus. That includes the race to develop a vaccine.
COVID-19 Can Be Transmitted On Long Flights
(Undated) -- COVID-19 can be transmitted on long airline flights, according to new studies. While the airline industry has touted the risk as low, researchers say there’s reason for concern as nations start lifting flight restrictions. In one study, passengers and crew were tracked after a flight from London to Hanoi. Sixteen people were infected, most of whom were passengers seated in business class with a person showing symptoms. The results were published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Timothy “Tim” John Mundt, age 60 of Seguin, passed away peacefully in his home with his loving family by his side on September 14, 2020. Tim was born on July 1, 1960 and grew up in Overland Park, KS.
He loved tagging along with his dad to the AP, where he worked, watching all the news come in over the wire while his Dad was typing up the news with 2 fingers. Tim graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School and went on to graduate from K-State University. He loved his Alma mater and loved to watch his K-State football and basketball. He also loved his KC Chiefs and Royals. Tim went on to Wichita, KS to work for Boeing. In 1989, on a trip back to Overland Park to visit family, he met Jan. After a whirlwind long distance courtship, Jan and her 3 young boys moved to Wichita! In 1990, Tim and his new family packed up and moved to New Braunfels, TX where Tim joined the family business, Altex Electronics, and worked for 30 years. Tim was very involved in his boys lives through baseball and the New Braunfels Little League. He started first as a coach and also served on the board as President, being very instrumental in the building of the new little league fields. In 1996, Tim and Jan expanded their family with their precious daughter, Rebecca. Rebecca was her Papa’s girl. He loved taking their yearly trips to Kansas to see Gram and supported Rebecca in everything she desired. In Tim’s words, “Each new day is an adventure,” and he loved watching his kids take on that adventure! Tim was most happy at the family ranch where he enjoyed the barbeques, birthday parties, and having fun. Tim loved his family dearly. He enjoyed watching them grow and play. He found his joy in their happiness and sharing the many blessings they had. Tim loved the Lord, his family, and others. He was a
