SHS drum majors share the band’s excitement about the new stadium By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – The Seguin Matador Varsity Football team isn’t the only group of students looking to tackle the fun and excitement of a new stadium. Members of the Seguin Matador Band and Color Guard are also pretty hyped about tonight’s performance on the brand new Jack Taylor Field. Now, although the COVID-19 pandemic has put a dent into the band’s usual contest routine, it won’t stop its members from entertaining the crowd.
remember we were looking at each other and we were like ‘wow.’ It looked so cool. It was so nice and special to be in an area that was built for everybody. A big thing with band kids
is instruments falling underneath the bleachers and it what really cool to see the bleachers having covers and things like that so it was really special to be there and see the whole
band and us as drum majors participate as a drum major. It was really special,” said Garcia. See DRUM MAJORS, page 2
Drum majors Isabella Garcia, Jeanne Woodlee and Maya Bobadilla shared a little about their excitement with KWED’s Linda Duncan who will be spotlighting the trio during tonight’s Halftime Show on AM 1580 KWED. Garcia says she appreciates that the stadium was built with all students in mind particularly the band. “When we walked in, the drum majors had an opportunity to go in first before the entire band with Mr. (Marc) Telles (band director) and it was just so amazing. Woodlee says the stadium is not only important for the community as a whole but a place where individuals can reach milestones, and or create their own special high school memories. “It was really amazing for me. I definitely grew up around that stadium. My family has been in Seguin for as long as I can remember since before I was born -- seeing my brothers play in the old stadium -- even in the past few years, it’s great to see something new and something that really represents the school so well,” said Woodlee. Bobadilla says the students thank the community for its vision and believes the new stadium was exactly what this town needed.
“It shows how far our town has come. First, with Seguin building the high school and now our stadium. It feels really complete and I also have been here since first grade watching both of my brothers perform and do all kinds of things in the old stadium. It feels really great to have a fresh new start with something really big and huge and it’s really fun to look at. It’s really nice. It’s really pretty,” said Bobadilla. You can hear the rest of the interview with the drum majors and more about the overall Seguin High School Band program during tonight’s half-time show on Seguin Radio KWED. A live broadcast of the game against Bastrop Cedar Creek gets underway with pregame at 6:45 p.m. followed by kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard on AM 1580 KWED or online at Seguintoday.com.

Guadalupe County salutes its manufacturers County judge encourages youth to consider a career in manufacturing
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2020
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – If there was ever a year to celebrate Manufacturing Day, it would be this year. In hopes of
suppling the San
hoto
yP rtes
Antonio Cou Manufacturers Association (SAMA) with a video and a virtual message in time for its virtual manufacturing tour on Oct. 2, Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher felt equipped maybe more than ever to shine a light on manufacturing a few days earlier and especially during a time when the industry has proven to hold strong. On Tuesday, the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court recognized the importance of manufacturing in a community. Thanking the court for its support was Josh Schneuker, the executive director for the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). “There’s still some perception out there that manufacturing is a dark and dirty job that doesn’t pay well and that’s definitely quite the opposite. It’s very high-tech. These are skilled positions. A lot of times, these positions don’t either require a college degree. You have the opportunity to enter the career field with little college debt and really advance your career into a well playing and really secure position

and I think that is something that we definitely saw just in terms of job security during the pandemic --when you see a
lot of retail and hospitality jobs furloughed or laid permanently – laid off. Manufacturing is an essential industry and it’s so important to our country and many of the folks, I really want to thank them. They are essential workers and they kept our country and county’s economy going,” said Schneuker. Kutscher, again, says his message about manufacturing is more important this year as the county witnessed the results of having invested in such partners throughout the years. He says each have demonstrated its role and importance during a pandemic. “So many times the public and people just in general, human nature, we want the shops and the restaurants and all that stuff and it will come but when we have such a strong manufacturing sector within our county and within our state, it opens up so many doors to have all those rooftops that you talked about (recently) on the radio and the retail follows rooftops and all those jobs and all those things go together but the big start for us has been manufacturing. That’s the reason we are financially strong. That’s the reason we were insulated by all those economic factors that so many other communities were hit with during the pandemic,” said Kutscher.
More importantly, Kutscher says this year’s message is directed to the youth of the county. “But I want young people to really look closer. Commissioner Wolverton and I were talking just before court typically young people want to go out and conquer the world. They want to move away and go see stuff and that’s great. Go do that but don’t discount the real careers that are here in our own

community. You don’t have to go off. It’s not grandpa’s manufacturing facility. It’s not the old dirty job (but) highly skilled, highly technical, CAD system, software programs, robotics – I mean all these things are implemented in just about every manufacturing facility within our community and if you commit yourself to one of those jobs and stay for a longtime, the opportunities are endless. You don’t have to move around nine times trying to make an extra $2 an hour. You can start right here in Seguin and Schertz and Cibolo and Guadalupe County somewhere and work and be proud and have a purpose and make things that are used around the world. So I hope young people see that, witness that and give it a chance because there’s a tremendous amount of opportunity here,” said Kutscher. Each year, Seguin and Guadalupe County is on the SAMA’s list to host a large group tour of its facilities. Again, the pandemic has forced the group to offer a virtual tour of the San Antonio region’s manufacturing plants.

Seguin ready for long-awaited football opener
MATADORS, continued from page 4
Friday’s opener features a “mentor vs. protege” coaching matchup. Cedar Creek’s Bryan Hill, the son of longtime Smithson Valley coach Larry Hill, played quarterback at Texas State when Travis Bush was the Bobcats’ offensive coordinator from 2008-2010. Hill makes his head coaching debut with a Cedar Creek program that went 5-5 and missed the playoffs in 2019. The Eagles dropped their final two games by a touchdown apiece to Georgetown-
East View and Marble Falls to finish sixth in District 13-5A Division II.
Cedar Creek’s most accomplished offensive returnee is running-back Dominic Mojica, who ran for 428 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Starting quarterback Brock McGlaughlin is a junior who did not attempt a varsity pass for the Eagles in 2019. “You watch them on offense and watch them on defense, and they’re a mirror of Smithson Valley,” Bush said. “They’re
going to rely on the running game, and they’re going to get the tight end and two backs in they’re going to try to iso the backers, and we’ve probably got some guys on defense that they think are undersized, and they’re going to try to attack them in the run game first, so we’ve got to be able to stop the run.” Friday’s kickoff at Matador Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:45 with the Navarro and Marion coaches’ shows.

After opening Ryne Miller’s third season as head coach with one-point wins over Karnes City and Goliad, the Bulldogs have suffered consecutive losses to Comfort (37-14) and Hondo (49-17). Marion has struggled to run the ball as effectively as Miller and co-offensive coordinators Cliff Hill and Josh Thompson would like. The Bulldogs are only averaging 82 rushing yards per game and 2.7 yards per carry, with most of the production coming from runningback Aden Rackley (204 yds., 1 TD) and quarterback Tanner Beakley (109 yds., 2 TD). Miller says that has to change in the district opener to minimize the
“We’ve got to establish the run game right off the bat,” Miller said. “We’ve got to get those offensive linemen going, and running-backs and quarterbacks hitting the holes good, go down and run the football, take some time off the clock, and keep that explosive offense off the field. That’s kind of the game plan going into it, and I think our coaches and our kids have got a great game plan for Friday.”

Trump: Redfield Made Mistake With COVID Vaccine Timeline
(Washington, DC) -- President Trump says the CDC director “made a mistake” when talking about a timeline for a coronavirus vaccine. Trump told reporters Robert Redfield put out “incorrect information” about when a vaccine could be available to the general public. Redfield told a congressional hearing earlier Wednesday that probably wouldn’t happen until the middle of next year. But, Trump thinks Redfield “misunderstood the question” and was “confused.” The President has insisted a vaccine would be ready “very soon” and distributed to the public shortly after.
McConnell Says Fewer Youth Using E-Cigarettes
(Washington, DC) -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the number of young Americans using e-cigarettes has dropped by one-point-eight-million since last year. That’s according to a 2020 national youth tobacco survey from the FDA and CDC. Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell explained it’s due in part to a bill passed last year. In December, President Trump signed the Tobacco-Free Youth Act, a bipartisan bill which upped the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. He says it hasn’t taken long to see the effects of their legislation.
