Drive-up, get a flu shot
Seguin doctor offers drive-thru flu clinic for local patients

WEDNESDAY THURSDAY
in Seguin, held a drive-thru flu vaccine clinic on Saturday at his office located at (Seguin) -- A local physician is doing more 523 E. Court St. Stephens says they decided to try to protect his patients from the flu to try this idea as a way to deliver a large this year. number of vaccinations in a relatively short amount time, all while also keeping people Dr. Bob Stephens, at Cornerstone Pediatrics safe from the spread of COVID-19.
“Every year, there’s a big push, of course, to get folks immunized against influenza to protect people from that illness during flu season. We participate in that every year, because the flu vaccine is recommended for all children six months of age and older. We were facing some extra challenges this year, because of course we have the pandemic. And because of coronavirus, it’s even more important to get protected against influenza, because we are going to have both diseases circulating at the same time throughout the winter months. But we are faced with pandemic issues where we are trying to maintain social distancing and folks are obviously hesitant, for very good reason, to be around a lot of other people. So we came upon this idea to have a drivethru flu clinic where people could pull up, and not get out of their cars, and we would provide the flu vaccines for their children while they are in their cars,” said Stephens.
Stephens says they were not sure how people would react to the plan, but he says Saturday’s drive-thru flu shot clinic was a big success. See FLU CLINIC, page 2

FLU CLINIC, continued from page 1
“It’s been extremely well received. We are going to be scheduled for today about 150 patients to come through over about three hours. We’ve got a team of seven here working to provide those immunizations in an efficient and a very safe way. The parents are really appreciating it. My staff is having a great time. It’s really great that we are able to do this, and get our families protected in a way that allows everyone to feel very safe in the process. It’s been really well received, like I said, (and) we’ve already had people asking
us if we are going to do it again. So we are really excited about how well it’s gone, and it’s a great way to make sure we are working to keep families healthy in our community,” said Stephens.
Dr. Stephens says he may offer additional drive-thru events as a way to combat both the flu and COVID-19 as we head into what is expected to be a busy cold and flu season. Check out the Cornerstone Pediatrics social pages for information about any future drivethru clinics.

Seguin Fire/EMS get better equipped to save lives By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Locating exactly where you are in a burning home will soon be easier for local firefighters. The Seguin Fire/EMS Department is the recipient of a CenterPoint Energy Safety Grant. The $1,900 grant will help the fire department purchase thermal imaging equipment for its fire houses.
of the thermal imagers which is really a personal thermal imaging device that helps us with the search and rescue of victims in fires, the rivers or any other place where we are looking for body heat or a cooler temperature. Of course in a fire, a body is going to show up a different color than the fire,” said Skinner.
Fire Chief Dale Skinner says this small handheld piece of equipment plays a dominate role in their search and rescue efforts.
“So we already have six of these and with the addition of this grant, we will be able to buy six more allowing every fire fighter on duty to have some form of thermal imaging at their disposal making us more efficient in our search and rescue efforts,” said Skinner.
“The grant is allowing us to purchase six more
Skinner says the equipment not only works to save
other people’s lives. He says the equipment in each fire fighter’s hands will also now help protect their own. “If anything else, we have come to rely on technology and giving fire fighters this technology is just another tool in our tool chest to make us better and more efficient in fire fighting and it will increase firefighter’s safety because they will be able to see some of the hidden dangers that you can’t see with the naked eye,” said Skinner. CenterPoint Energy officials say they were encouraged by the vision of the Seguin Fire Department and support the safety measures implemented in the communities that it serves.
The Seguin Fire/EMS Department was the recipient of a $1,900 grant from CenterPoint Energy. City leaders were on hand for the delivery of the check and to thank the company for its support.

Trump: Redfield Made Mistake With COVID Vaccine Timeline
(Washington, DC) -- President Trump says the CDC director “made a mistake” when talking about a timeline for a coronavirus vaccine. Trump told reporters Robert Redfield put out “incorrect information” about when a vaccine could be available to the general public. Redfield told a congressional hearing earlier Wednesday that probably wouldn’t happen until the middle of next year. But, Trump thinks Redfield “misunderstood the question” and was “confused.” The President has insisted a vaccine would be ready “very soon” and distributed to the public shortly after.
McConnell Says Fewer Youth Using E-Cigarettes
(Washington, DC) -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the number of young Americans using e-cigarettes has dropped by one-point-eight-million since last year. That’s according to a 2020 national youth tobacco survey from the FDA and CDC. Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell explained it’s due in part to a bill passed last year. In December, President Trump signed the Tobacco-Free Youth Act, a bipartisan bill which upped the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. He says it hasn’t taken long to see the effects of their legislation.
