T he Voice of Se guin Today

2020 Census deadline arrives By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Today is the last day for you to be counted on that green population sign. Today is the deadline to go online or call the 2020 U.S. Census phone line and let them know you are here and that you matter. That’s according to Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin. Sourdellia says the 2020 Census is simply the way the federal government establishments its populations throughout the nation and helps determine how much money each community needs. Although today is the deadline, Sourdellia says the city is still encouraging residents to submit their responses as soon as possible.

City of Seguin employees make a last-ditch effort to remind residents to fill out their 2020 Census form by the end of today.

“Right now, we stand at about 64.5 percent and everyone has until Sept. 30 to get their responses turned in back to the Census. Actually, today some of our city staff are out walking

some of the areas where we are lagging behind in the Census responses and they are putting door hangers on just to remind everyone to be sure to get their response in before the deadline,” said Sourdellia.

A lag in responses to the Census are being noted in two areas of the city. The first area, which is still in need of approximately 800 responses, includes those homes within the Austin, Baxter, Martindale and Guadalupe Street neighborhoods. The streets in this area include but are not limited to Patton, Rosemary, Louise, Lincoln, Chapman and Mesquite. The second area still needs about 1,000 responses and lies within the Guadalupe, New Braunfels and West Court Street area. Some of the individual streets in this area include Hidalgo, Aldama, Eighth Street, Avenue G, Collins, West Kingsbury, Silva, Veterans, San Antonio Avenue, Krezdorn, West College Street, Campbell, Dolle Ave., Gordon and Saunders. Seguin gearing up for largest food distribution event yet WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

first Thursday of each month until it runs out and we will need to have the facility and then people to help distribute the food. So, that’s where the city has been a significant reason why we’ve been able to do this because we are using the Seguin Coliseum as the site because to distribute that amount of food, we need a large site and Thursday is just the day that the food bank has designated our community to have this distribution,” said Bennett.

(Seguin) – This week’s food distribution event in Seguin hopes to deliver triple the amount of food to local families. During each of the last several food distributions events, the New Braunfels Food Bank and the city of Seguin successfully served 100,000 pounds of food to approximately 800 families. This time, the food bank hopes to distribute 300,000 pounds of food to local families in need. For years, Elaine Bennett, CEO of the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation, has represented GRMC by helping to host such drives. Bennett says she can’t believe how much free food will be made available for local families this Thursday. “I think Seguin is a place where we have a good relationship with the food bank, and they know that we have food insecurity in our community and we have willing people to get behind this in getting the food out to the people,” said Bennett. Bennett says what might be even more exciting is

that the New Braunfels Food Bank has also decided to include Seguin and Guadalupe County on a monthly food schedule until further notice. “The food bank has told me that we will get a food distribution once a month. Our community is on their schedule as the first Thursday of each month and I have asked the food bank how long can I count on this sort of speak and they said they don’t know either but as far as their schedule is concerned, we will have food assistance on the

A two-week supply of food will be given to families, including a variety of fruits and vegetables, dry goods, dairy and protein. Also, to ensure a successful distribution, Bennett says volunteers are also still needed for the two-hour event. The registration deadline for Thursday’s food distribution is today at noon. Anyone in the community can participate. No paperwork is required. The food distribution will be held Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Seguin Events Complex, Seguin Coliseum parking lot located at 950 S. Austin St. To sign-up, visit nbfoodbank.org/cvresponse. To volunteer and or to register, call 830-327-6000.

Sourdellia says again, each household is encouraged to fill out the Census form for that address. Officials say individuals do not have to fear providing their personal information. They say this is especially true for those who might be undocumented, who have an outstanding warrant or who might be living in a home on a temporary basis. “It is everyone’s civic responsibility and duty to do this as an American and it does go to fund several different programs in our community such as it funds Medicaid. It funds SNAP, also public transportation. People may not know realize but this also goes to help fund the CHIP program which is the Children’s Health Insurance Program and SNAP Benefits and things like the food distributions that we have been holding for community too,” said Sourdellia. More importantly, Sourdellia says meeting today’s midnight deadline is quick and easy.

“There are some ways that people can do this. They can go online at 2020census.gov and they can fill it out online. It literally takes five minutes or less. All you have to do answer 10 questions and you are done or if you don’t have an internet connection, you can call 844-330-2020 and that will take you through automated prompts and you can just complete your census over the phone,” said Sourdellia.

Again, without the federal funds that are determined by the census numbers, services such as schools, hospitals and roads could be reduced resulting in an increase in local taxes. A significant increase in population numbers can also help in the recruitment of retail, restaurants and other stores that look at the size of a city for future development. Paper packets that arrived this past spring can still be mailed back with today’s postmark. To fill out the census form online visit 2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020.

for Seguin PD poster contest for kids we came up with a way that we can still engage with the kids in the community. What we are trying to do is have them draw posters as they see themselves as police officer,” said McCann. McCann says while they already have a handful of entries, the police department would still like to see more posters pour into their office. “The contest is going well but we would definitely like more participation. I think we are at about 115 posters turned in at this time approximately but usually, when we do the traditional Badges, Bikes

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Hey kids, don’t forget that your homework assignment from the Seguin Police Department is due today. That’s because this Wednesday is the deadline for the first ever 2020 Badges, Bikes and Tykes Poster Contest. Since the police department is unable to host the event in its original carnival format, it has opted to get dozens of bikes into kids’ hands through its poster contest. The idea of the contest is for kids to draw and show what their day as a Seguin Police Officer would look like. Mike McCann, the administrative lieutenant with the Seguin PD, says the art contest is open to kids ages toddlers to 18 years of age. He says bikes will be awarded to the top winners in each age category. “What we are trying to do is just reach out to the kids in the community. COVID, unfortunately, got in our way of doing the traditional event so

and Tykes, we have about 800 kids so we are well short of our target audience but the more the better,” said McCann. McCann says the police department wants every child to participate and is even there to help provide the supplies if needed by a family. “We have all the material they’ll need and that we can deliver to them or they can come and pick up at the police department. We just ask that we have all the drawings back by this Wednesday at 5 o’clock. We’ll even go pick them up if the kiddos need us to go pick them up from their house. They can call is at 830-401-2350 and we can give them supplies or pick up their posters for them,” said McCann. Judges will pick the top six winners from each age group, three boys and three girls. Each will receive a bike. To participate, all poster entries must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Seguin PD. Anyone wishing to have their entry picked up are asked to contact the Seguin PD at 401-2350.

About 20-thousand cases were reported among civilians, dependents and military contractors.

(Undated) -- The number of global coronavirus deaths is over one-million. Data from Johns Hopkins University shows the U.S. has the most deaths from the respiratory illness at over 205-thousand. Other hotspots are Brazil, India and Mexico. Around the world over 33-million people have been infected with COVID-19. The U.S. has over sevenmillion of those cases.

(Geneva) -- The World Health Organization is announcing it will make 120-million rapid coronavirus tests available to low and middle income countries. The W-H-O says the plan is not yet fully funded and 600-million-dollars is needed to make it happen. W-H-O Director-General Doctor Tedros Ghebreyesus [[ TEDrohs GEH-bree-ay-suhs ]] said this will enable the expansion of testing, particularly in areas that do not have lab facilities or enough trained health workers to carry out tests. He added that they have an agreement with seed funding, but they still need the full amount of funds.

(South Bend, IN) -- The University of Notre Dame is releasing the results from the COVID-19 testing last week that led to the football program postponing its game against Wake Forest on September 26th. The university said they tested 273 student athletes, which resulted in 18 positive tests. The program says there are 25 players in isolation because of contact tracing.
