Largest Lotto Texas jackpot in over a decade won in Seguin By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The state’s newest millionaire, either lives or shops here in Seguin. A Seguin store was “the store” who sold the lucky ticket for Wednesday night’s record Lotto Texas Jackpot of $47 million. The winning ticket was purchased at the Pic-N-Pac #10 store located on State Highway 123 Bypass. Phil Wuest, director of operations for Pic-N-Pac, says although he went to bed knowing it was a Seguin store that had sold that ticket, he didn’t receive confirmation on the Lotto win until early Wednesday morning. “I saw last night on Facebook that someone from Seguin won the lottery and I was like ‘wow, I wonder if they bought it at one of our stores?’ I didn’t think much more about it. Then this morning, at 6:30, the manager from PicN-Pac #10 by Taco Bell texted me and said ‘hey, we sold the winning ticket last night.’ I was like ‘wow,’ and so we were texting back and forth for a while and we were all excited because anytime, you sell a winning lottery ticket, it just creates so much buzz for the store. People just get so excited to know that a store in Seguin sold the ticket and they like to go to that store and talk about it. It’s just fun for the community. So, that’s how I found out about it,” said Wuest. The winner chose the cash value option for the prize, which means they’ll take
a lump sum payout of just under $40 million. It’s been known that when a store is confirmed to have sold a winning ticket, that store would receive a one percent cut of the total prize -- a prize that is also often shared with the cashier who directly sold the ticket. This sharing of the pie, however, will not be the case with this week’s win here in Seguin. That’s according to Wuest.
they spend a lot of time dealing with the lottery and it is disappointing that we and they will not share in the program form a financial standpoint. It’s kind of a bummer. But, we are still excited that we were the winning store and people love to go to Pic-N-Pac to buy their lottery tickets and we have some of the more successful stores in the community for lottery tickets and so we appreciate the customers playing their games at our store,” said Wuest.
The ticket sold Wednesday was also not a quick pick. This means the winner chose the lucky six numbers on his or her own. The numbers drawn on Wednesday were 4, 11, 16, 19, 27, and 30. It should also be noted that this Pic-N-Pac store near Taco Bell was also the same store that sold a $21 million winning lottery ticket back in the 1990s. According to Lottery officials, winners of the large jackpots no longer have to accept their prize publicly and can choose to remain anonymous.
“We talked to the lottery commissioner because they notified us as well that we sold the winning lottery ticket. They always let us know very quickly and unfortunately, this time around, Governor (Greg) Abbott vetoed the appropriations bill two sessions ago and retailer bonus money was not included in that bill so at this point, that has not been restored. So, we will not be receiving a retailer bonus this time around,” said Wuest. While it is a bummer to not receive a nickel from the $47 million win, Wuest says he is still grateful that one their stores was “the store” that sold the prize for the largest Lotto Texas jackpot in more than 10 years. “Yeah, it’s disappointing. Over the years, the lottery has continued to be extremely successful. Lottery sales continue to go up and they keep adding games. They have add on line games. There is a tremendous amount of scratch games that we play. It’s a complicated tasks to be able to run that lottery machine and so our employees
This Pic-N-Pac store at State Highway 123 Bypass is getting plenty of press as folks are calling it “The Luckiest” store in the Lone Star State.

Pre-sale tickets still available for Geronimo VFD BBQ plate fundraiser WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Geronimo) – The Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department hopes you come to its rescue by buying any remaining tickets for this Saturday’s annual BBQ Plate Fundraiser. Due to the pandemic, Fire Chief Michael Castro says the VFD has altered its annual fundraiser into a drive-thru event and seeks your support this weekend. “Last year, we did about 750 plates. We would like to stay around that but we understand that in this difficult time, we are expecting to be lower than that honestly. But, we just wanted to keep some type of normalcy in the community and still have some type of event for people to still get out and do something in the community to help support the fire department as well,” said Castro. Due to the changes in the event, the VFD is also promoting new hours in which residents can stop by and pick up their plates. “We decided not to do a lunch like we normally would do. We would normally do that from 12 to 2 p.m. We had decided to not do that this year. The plate pick up starts at 11 and will go till 4 p.m. We are encouraging the community that if you’ve done pre-sold tickets to come between 11 and 2:30 p.m. that we can guarantee you a plate and then that way, it gives us another opportunity for people who want plates on site to purchase plates as well and we have enough food for them too,” said Castro. In addition to its plate sale, Castro says the Geronimo VFD will also be selling tickets for its annual raffle. “This year, we have decided not to do a silent auction (or) actual live auction so we have only decided to do a raffle ticket sale which they are still available at the fire station. We’ve had people there off and on

throughout the day but definitely have somebody there after 5 p.m. and then also, you can get raffle tickets the day of the event. We are going to have lines there where if you want to get a raffle ticket, there will still be an opportunity for you to get it at that time and then we will have the live drawing of the raffle ticket at 5 p.m. via Facebook Live,” said Castro. Included in the list of raffle prizes are several gift and cash cards ranging from $25 to $200. Top prizes also include a kayak and camping gear package valued at $350; a $200 gas grill and $250 worth of services at Kings Hwy Animal Clinic. Tickets for the raffle are $2 each or six for $10. Castro says each year, the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department relies on this particular fundraiser to keep it in operation. He says this year is no different and hopes that the community not only comes out to support it but to also help celebrate a milestone for the department. “Every year, we ask for support for the community. We do get funding from the county. Obviously, with the price of all of the equipment, items are not cheap. We are a non-profit organization. We do have to do fundraisers to help get equipment that we need that is either outdated or update our equipment or even add to our fleet on items. So far, we’ve been able to purchase a new used brush truck to help our fleet out. So, that will be the fifth apparatus that the Geronimo Fire Department has never had so adding that extra vehicle about a month ago, it will help out a lot going towards 2021 and moving forward. We are currently in the process of saving up for a renovation of our station as it does hit our 40th year anniversary this year,” said Castro. BBQ plate tickets are $10 in person or $11.50 online. BBQ plates will be served at the Geronimo Community Center on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Again, tickets are available from any Geronimo VFD firefighter or at the fire station. They can also be purchased on the fire department’s Facebook page.

Pecans and sausage on the line for tonight’s Matador match-up against New Braunfels By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (New Braunfels) – All bets are on the table for tonight’s football game between the Seguin Matadors and New Braunfels Unicorns. The mayors from Seguin and New Braunfels met this week to place their wagers on the 108th Annual Guadalupe Bowl. The Seguin Matadors are gearing up for their annual face-off against neighboring rivals, the New Braunfels Unicorns, at 7:30 pm this Friday night at Unicorn Stadium.
school life and small-town living. It’s all one of the great things about living in a small town is having these traditions and rivalries and so forth,” said Keil. As for his message to the team and coaching staff, Keil says he wishes them all the very best.
In continuing tradition, Seguin Mayor Don Keil and New Braunfels Mayor Rusty Brockman met once again earlier this week for their friendly wager. Keil says although their annual bets consist of pecans from Seguin and sausage from New Braunfels, it’s the tradition that has them coming back year after year.
“I just want them to know that this community is behind them. That we are so very very proud of what they do and the way they represent our community. They are great kids and they are hardworking kids and just by them being out there and doing this incredible job on the field -- they are highly skilled, they are highly trained -- they are to be admired for their dedication and for all that they do to become such a finely honed athlete. Not everybody can play that game and these kids should be very very proud that they are able to go out and do this and do it well and represent the community and the community in turn is very very proud of them as they represent us,” said Keil. Following the game, the coveted plaque will hang at the City Hall of the team that prevails on Friday night.
“It’s just an amazing thing that two small towns who are still not terribly small anymore can carry on this rivalry and it’s just an exciting thing that happens every year at this time. Just like every football season, this is part of it. It’s a traditional thing and I think that tradition is a very important part of I think high

Panthers open district Bulldogs seek first slate at home vs. district win in road Manor-New Tech battle vs. Pirates
(Geronimo) - Navarro begins its push for one of the four available playoff berths in District 14-4A-Division II Friday evening with a home game against Manor-New Tech at Erwin-Lee Field.
The Panthers are 2-2 after erasing a 17-0 deficit with three fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Giddings 21-17 last Friday. The Titans finally opened their season after an extended COVID-19 delay and made a respectable showing in a 19-0 road loss to an undefeated IngramMoore team. “Lot’s of speed on defense,” Navarro head coach Rod Blount said after scouting Manor-New Tech. “Some things would break open, and the secondary guys would come in and make those plays, and clean it up, and not allow any big plays. Ingram-Tom Moore is a 5-0 ballclub, and they went and made them earn everything that they had. So we’ve got to get on our blocks, stay on our blocks, make sure we’re carrying out our fakes, and try to slow that defense down a little bit.”

Marion head coach Ryne Miller and defensive coordinator Tim Tesch are impressed after watching Aldridge on film.
“In the words of Coach Tesch, he’s kind of a min-Manziel back there,” Miller said. “He does a great job of creating plays on the run, and really developing that offense. He’s a great runner. We have to get some pressure on him, and hopefully try to contain him, and contain him in the pocket as much as we can.” The Bulldogs’ statistical leaders on offense through five games include junior quarterback Tanner Beakley (663 yds., 7 TD, 6 Int., 2 rush TD), runningback Aden Rackley (213 yds., 1 TD), and receivers Jayden Williams (14 rec., 207 yds. 2 TD) and Dillon Blakely (14 rec., 200 yds. 2 TD).
