Relay for Life to host reunion-like event

Annual fundraiser set for this Saturday at Max Starcke Park

(Seguin) -- Folks who have spent the last few years fighting cancer are invited to this weekend’s Relay Reunion. The reunion is all part of this year’s annual Relay for Life of Guadalupe and Comal County. The American Cancer Society event is set for 3 to 7 p.m. at the big pavilion at Max Starcke Park.

Last year, both the Guadalupe and Comal County Relay for Life groups chose to merge their efforts in hopes of saving more lives and drawing closer to a cure as one strong team.

Realizing the importance of acknowledging all those who have been a part of Relay’s history is Misti Abrameit-Guenther. Guenther says although the fundraising event itself has changed, the goal has remained the same.

“So anyone who has participated in the past as a

survivor, a team captain, a leadership person, anybody who has participated in Relay for Life in Comal County or Guadalupe County. We are trying to do a Relay Reunion and what does that look like? At 5 o’clock, we are trying to have everything together to do a Relay lap, to be able to do a big group Relay photo of past and present. I have Earlene Jarzombek who is the one who brought Relay for Life and carried Relay for many, many years here to Guadalupe County. Becky, Voges who is one of the founders in Comal County -- she will also be there because she is still participating and has a team. So, it’s kind of a look back. We want to know and see the faces of Relay from all the way back to 1999,” said Guenther.

The Spazmatics to perform tonight at TLU The Spazmatics to perform tonight at TLU Spazmatics

Seguin community invited to FREE concert

(Seguin) -- Get ready to step back into the 1980s. The much-anticipated concert of the fall is set for tonight at Texas Lutheran University. The Spazmatics, the ultimate 80s tribute band, will take the stage tonight at TLU’s Jackson Auditorium. The concert gets underway at 7 p.m.

Complete with skinny ties, Brill creamed hair and horn-rimmed glasses, the band is known for recapturing, “all the best” of the 80s decade.

Ashlie Ford, the director of marketing and communications, says The Spazmatics equal fun.

“We wanted to bring a group that had a really strong local following and a group that is just a really fun performance. So, we immediately thought of the Spazmatics. They have a huge following in the surrounding areas -- in Comal County, in Austin and Guadalupe County and we know that they play in a lot of places locally and we thought let’s bring this 80s

tribute band to campus for a really fun, energetic, high energy night for not only our students but for everyone here in Seguin,” said Ford.

Ford says the most important part about tonight’s concert is that the event is open to anyone.

“This like most of our events is free. It’s open to the public. No tickets are required. We always want people from the Seguin community to come to our events. This is going to be really

As part of including the Relay Reunion in this year’s schedule of events, Guenther also hopes to showcase the impact that Relay has had in the fight against cancer.

“Comal, from the record books, shows me it started in 2001. Guadalupe County was started in 1999. At five o’clock, I’m going to disclose how much money those two counties have brought in for the American Cancer Society. So, that’s part of that lap, and wanting to report back to everybody that everybody matters and every bit that has been done here in Guadalupe County has helped Relay for Life but even more than just Relay for Life as the American Cancer Society. By raising that money, we have helped people by having better treatments, earlier detection, rides to treatments, Look Good Feel Better programs, building the Hope Lodge -- if anybody unfortunately has had to stay in those beautiful facilities by MD Anderson -- and those were all things that have been helped by this community,” said Guenther.

fun, especially for anyone who grew up in the 80s or just loves 80s music. It’s going to be a great event for families. We encourage you to not only attend but really have fun, dance, and participate. This is the kind of group that encourages that kind of sort of crowd participation. Like I said, a lot of high energy going on and the most important thing for people to remember if they are attending is that the event is tonight, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and just a reminder all bags will be searched upon entry and no alcohol is allowed or being served at this event,” said Ford.

Ford says due to rain chances, the concert originally scheduled for TLU’s Jackson Park was moved to Jackson Auditorium. The event, again, is free. No tickets are required. The concert is being sponsored by the TLU Jessie S. and Jack Harold Upton Brown Cultural Enrichment Endowment Fund.

Survivors this Saturday are also welcome to be a part of the event beginning with registration at 3:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies will get underway at 4 p.m. followed by the Survivor Lap and Caregiver Lap.

A total of 22 Relay teams will be on hand to raise money during this year’s event. This year’s theme is “Games.” Team booths include games, food, baked goods, and raffles. The solemn Luminaria ceremony, which includes the reading of names of those impacted by cancer, will get underway at 6:30 p.m. Luminaria bags are $5 each and can be purchased in memory of someone or in honor of someone battling cancer.

Although this year’s Relay will serve as a reunion and a look back at the past, Guenther says it’s also the launch pad into the future and helping to meet the needs of the Seguin and Guadalupe County community.

“This community doesn’t have somebody who treats cancer here in town. Many people have said and I wish I could help bring a cancer doctor to Seguin where people can actually have treatment. Relay, pg. 3

Geronimo VFD to host annual BBQ fundraiser

(Geronimo) -- Instead of extinguishing them, Geronimo Volunteer Fire Fighters will be igniting the flames this weekend during their annual BBQ fundraiser and live auction. The event will be held this Saturday at the Geronimo Community Center.

Michael Castro, the president of the Geronimo VFD, says BBQ plates will again be served as usual.

"We are going to have our lunch like we always do from 12 to 2 p.m. there at the Community Center. It's going to be a drive through and then dinner will be from 5 to 8 p.m. there at the Community Center as well," said Castro.

Those who choose to stop by for

dinner will be treated to live music by local band Best Friends. A live auction will also get underway at 6:30 p.m. Castro says like most VFDs, every dollar is stretched the best way that it can be.

"We definitely see the impact of the growth for sure. It's still a growing community as it has been for a little bit now and we are located right across the Navarro Junior High off of (State Hwy.) 123. We had a station renovation and addition that was done a year and a half ago. Last year was actually the first-full year of being in the station and now we are looking for donations and stuff for equipment that we need to update and paying off the facility and updating our fleet,"

We struggle with that. We have such great places in New Braunfels and we have places in San Marcos and San Antonio, all around us but we don’t have it here in Seguin and I want so bad for a doctor to come here and put roots down so that when the people of Seguin do need treatment or do need that help, I would love for them to be able to get that treatment and go home and not have to travel so

said Castro.

Most of the proceeds from this year's barbecue, however, will go toward the renovation of the fire station's driveway. Castro says it's been a long time since the driveway has been repaired and says with the new building, the project has been made a priority.

Plates are $12 pre-sale or $15 at the door. The meal includes beef clod, sausage, potato salad, and green beans.

The fire department's annual raffle will also officially kick off at this year's event. Tickets are $20 each and include a number of prizes. The drawing is scheduled for Dec. 13.

The Geronimo Community Center is located at 260 Navarro Dr.

much. So, that’s my goal. That’s my dream for our area but even more, I would love for cancer to go away. That is why we have been trying to raise money for these last 24 seasons of Relay for Life of Guadalupe County,” said Guenther. This weekend’s Relay is one of 2,500 Relay events around the country that support and celebrate survivors and caregivers. Those still interested in forming a lastminute team or who would like to make a donation are encouraged to call Guenther at 830-832-2440.

Lady Matadors, Lady Panthers and Lady Bulldogs all pick up district volleyball wins on Tuesday

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors got a much needed district win on Tuesday night with a straight sets victory over San Antonio Wagner 2516, 25-12, 25-8 at Goldie Harris Gym.

Middle blocker Zoe Seldon was active on the evening finishing second on the team with seven kills and leading the Lady Mats with four blocks. After the match, Seguin head coach Ashley Farris talked about how Seldon has improved her game during her senior year.

“She’s very hard on herself,” Farris said. “But she’s definitely doing much, much better because she wants to leave a legacy for these younger middle (blockers). We have two freshman middles right behind her on the team. And she knows how important she to them. So, she’s doing an excellent job for us.”

Senior Keighly Dailey had another doubledouble for Seguin in the win with 10 kills and 11 digs. Setter Gisele Morales lead the Lady Mats with

17 assists. And Alexa Lara came up with 16 digs. With the win, the Lady Matadors evened their District 26-5A record at 4-4 at the start of the second half of the district season. First serve in the match is set for 5 O’clock at Fredericksburg High School.

Pro-Life Groups Praise New West Texas County Ordinance (Lubbock, TX) -- A West Texas county has made it illegal for pregnant women to travel on its roads to seek an abortion. That’s winning praise from pro-life groups. Kim Schwartz with Texas Right To Life says the law fits with the state’s tough new abortion rules, which ban the procedure in the vast majority of cases. Cochran County sits on the Texas line with New Mexico, which has become a haven for abortion-seekers. Legal experts have concerns the ordinance could be unconstitutional.

Tens Of Thousands Of Healthcare Workers Poised To Strike (San Diego, CA) -- Tens of thousands of healthcare workers are poised to strike today if negotiations don’t improve with Kaiser Permanente. The workers say they’re protesting unfair labor practices and unsafe staffing levels. This would be the largest healthcare worker strike in U.S. history. It would impact hundreds of hospitals and medical facilities across the nation, including in California, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. and impact 75-thousand healthcare workers.

High Court Refuses To Take Up Controversial Case (Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court is refusing to take a case related to the debate over what’s known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. They denied to hear the case of a Texas death row inmate, who was convicted of killing his two-year old daughter. At the trial of Robert Roberson, his defense attorneys showed the child did not have serious neck injuries. Experts have recently become divided over the science of whether a baby can be shaken to death, saying that more consideration needs to be paid to medical histories.

NYC Launches First In Nation Telehealth Abortion Care

(New York, NY) -- New York City’s health system is offering telehealth abortion care access, becoming the first public health system in the nation to do so. Starting this week, patients in New York City seeking abortion care will be able to schedule a virtual appointment with a New York state-licensed health care professional through Health and Hospitals. Patients must attest to being in New York City at the time of the call and must attest that they will be in New York City when they take any medication. Mayor Eric Adams says telehealth abortion care allows people to make the choices they need privately and safely.
