Tickets still available for Kiwanis Flapjack Jamboree TV, hotel stay, gift cards among this year’s raffle prizes By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The pandemic isn’t getting in the way of breakfast this weekend. That’s because griddles will be sizzling on Saturday for the Kiwanis Club’s 62nd Annual Flapjack Jamboree. While the pandemic isn’t stopping the civic group from hosting its major fundraiser, it has caused a few changes including a location change. This year, instead of being held at the Seguin Silver Center, the event will be held at the Columbus Club of Seguin. Amanda Dasher, a member of the Kiwanis Club, says although the fundraiser had to be altered a bit, the group is still very fortunate to be continuing its tradition of serving up breakfast to the Seguin community. “The format definitely is a lot different this year for us because we are used to having an indoor area where we have all of our raffle items and you sit down, have music so this year, we still did want to continue on to have our 62nd annual Flapjack Jamboree so we are just doing it as a drive thru event only. We are having it over at the Columbus Club of Seguin. They’ll pull in. We are going to have two separate lines to try to keep the flow going. It will be from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and we are still having some raffle items. We do have three big items and we will be selling raffle tickets. We are selling them now and also on the day of the event and then we’ll have that drawing a little after 11:30 a.m.,” said Dasher. As for those three raffle prizes, Dasher says there’s still plenty of time to get your tickets.
“Our first item is donated by Ryan and Lindsay Koehler and Oehlke CPA. It is a 20 quart Pelican cooler, two 30 ounce Yukon outfitter tumblers, some yummy gummies and a $200 gift card to Granzin’s. Our second big raffle item is going to be two dinner gift cards for Rocket Wings, a free two-night stay at TownePlace Suites Seguin, a $200 gift card donated by First United Bank and a $100 gift certificate for the Lions Den (Art Collective) Tattoo Studio donated by Jeremiah Camacho. Our third raffle item is donated by the Law Office of Ruben James Reyes and that is a 70 inch LG smart TV, “ said Dasher. Dasher says club members take pride in the cooking themselves and are ready for another great year. “We have our pancake griddles out there. They have the sausages going. We will be wearing masks and going along with all the health code -- stuff that they have told us that we needed to follow even more this year. But, our members will be out there flipping pancakes and sausages from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.,” said Dasher. Pancake tickets are $7 each. The pancakes are served with sausage, juice or coffee. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Tickets can be purchased Friday at the Columbus Club of Seguin Hall from 1 to 3 p.m. Those interested may also message the club on its Facebook page. Limited tickets will also be available at the door. The Columbus Club of Seguin (Knights of Columbus) is located at 1015 S. Austin St.

in those houses so they can do their estimates and once that is complete, they go back and compare that complete census to people who self-responded to see if maybe there is an overlap with people who self-responded after they made contact with them out in the field and to make sure there are no duplications of efforts. So, they probably have a little more work to do here in Seguin,” said Parker.
anything. I want to send a thank you to our complete count, census committee. They did a phenomenal job in the time of COVID to try to get as many people engaged with this response effort. Our staff made a last ditch effort to go out to our neighborhoods where we know we had lower response rates. They did door to door hangers as well to try to make contact. We did give it a good effort. But it looks like with the follow-up committee people doing their job and then the work we did, it looks like we had a pretty successful census,” said Parker. The federal government is required to conduct a full census count every 10 years. The count is important, because often federal dollars and other resources are often tied to the population results obtained through the census. The 2020 Census data is expected to be released sometime next spring.
Seguin’s census response rate lags behind other communities
By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The census count is over, and city officials hope that the results will be favorable for the city of Seguin. City Manager Steve Parker provided an update to the city council on Monday night. “We ended up with a 65 percent self-response rate. The stats coming in from the census workers that have been going out into the community and trying to make contact with all those people who did not self-respond, they completed 99.3 percent of that work so that’s really good. So basically, what that means is they go once try to make contact, go twice try to make contact, the third time, they start trying to go to neighbors and trying to get ideas of how many people live
Parker says they were hoping more residents would voluntarily submit their census forms, but he says overall, the response was still pretty good. “The self-response rate was a little bit less than what we were hoping for especially as compared to some of our surrounding cities we have. But, it was not from a lack of effort. I think it has a little more to do more with our demographics than
Guadalupe County Fair Association to host a raffle this Saturday
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Although things might not have worked out this week for what should have been the 137th Annual Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo, the fair association is still doing its part to keep the spirit of a
family tradition going. That’s according to Sarah Louque, the events coordinator for the Guadalupe County Fair Association. Louque says luckily for them, volunteers got a jump start in gathering prizes for a special raffle drawing happening this weekend. “We decided that we wanted to do something different for the fair this year after the fair last year. We normally have a liquor wagon raffle but we wanted to do something that the Fair Queen and the Round Up girls could also help out with so we decided let’s gather up items and give us enough time that we can gather up the prizes. So, we started working on it around November, December and it gave us some time to gather up prizes and put a list together and then our friends over at Guadalupe Printing Solutions helped us with the printing of the tickets and we got tickets printed and we started selling somewhere around July or August and we sold a little over 1,000 tickets. So, our drawing is going to be Saturday at 10 a.m. We are going to do a Facebook Live. Our fair queens are going to help us draw. We even have some items that didn’t get listed on our tickets just because we got some other things come in after our tickets got printed,” said Louque. Louque says the raffle list includes a variety of great
prizes donated by a number of individuals and businesses. “We have cash prizes. There’s a handmade patriotic quilt. There’s rocking horses. There’s lot of gift cards. There’s purses, blue tooth speakers but there’s a lot of great prizes on it,” said Louque. Louque says although proceeds are needed to fund the fair and rodeo, many of the other dollars raised are shared with other community non-profits.
“It’s very important. The fair, even though we are a 501c3 non-profit, there are still everyday expenses and there are also still scholarships that we hand out and there’s other expenses. I say expenses but it’s donations that we still do year round. We help support the Little League and we support youth show projects and there are other causes such as Relay for Life and the Rotary, different things like that that we support throughout the year,” said Louque. Raffle tickets are $5 each. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Guadalupe Fair Association Office at 830-379-6477. The Fair Queens will also be selling tickets outside the Pic-N-Pac store in McQueeney today beginning at 1 p.m.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 9, 2020
The Seguin Daily News today continues to feature the local candidates appearing on the Nov. 3, 2020 General Election. Each candidate was asked to respond to the following three questions. Early voting begins Tuesday, Oct. 13 and runs through Friday, Oct. 30. Today’s featured contest is the race for Seguin City Council District 2.
Sonia Mendez
Seguin City Council District 2
Tell us why you’re running?
“My name is Sonia Mendez. I am seeking an office in District 2 Seguin City Council. I have lived in District 2 for over 45 years. Born and raised in this beautiful city, graduated from Seguin High School, and attended 5 years at Texas Lutheran University. I am a mother and a grandmother. I have lived and witnessed many changes, growth, progress, diversity, and expansions. I want a better, safer Seguin for them, for everyone. There is a determination in me that I want to ensure our community that it is safe. Safe to be in our homes, safe to shop, safe in our schools, safe to attend church, and more importantly safe to vote. I also want to ensure our community that in order for us to feel safe, we need to work closely with our law enforcement agency.”
What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?
“In my eyes, the biggest challenge I face currently is convincing my district it is safe to vote. I walked many of the streets of District 2 while campaigning and safety is a big concern. Street improvements are another concern to the community in District 2. The older generation, as well as the younger generation, think alike. Because I am employed with Seguin ISD at Rodriguez Elementary I believe our school system is safe for everyone. I want my neighbors to know also, that we maintain a high level of every safety precautions available. We need to work with our law enforcement agency to ensure neighbors our streets are safe, our homes are protected, and they are available to provide assistance.”
What do you believe makes you the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?
Pete Silvius
Seguin City Council District 2
Tell us why you’re running?
“I have lived in District 2 near downtown for nearly 20 years. During these years I have looked for opportunities to be engaged and serve our community. I believe that we all have an obligation to our community. We need to be willing to step up when opportunities are presented. Seguin has a tremendous amount of potential to be a destination city, attracting new residents and tourists alike. This past year I completed a second term as the Chair of the Parks and Recreation Board. A major achievement of the Parks Board was the adoption of the 2020 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. I believe the Master Plan will guide us to more fully recognize the benefit of recreation as an economic driver in our community. The Master Plan, along with Infrastructure and policies that support a more walkable, bike friendly and connected community, will increase economic development. I want to help make Seguin a community that families will move to for the quality of life that is offered here.”
What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?
“The City of Seguin and the surrounding areas are going through a period of rapid growth. This growth is a great opportunity for our city as it will bring additional resources. During this period of growth, the city of Seguin will need to be intentional about anchoring growth to the downtown area and continuing to enhance and support existing infrastructure that will be necessary for support a growing population. We need to fill existing buildings with vibrant, stable businesses, and increase the depth of our economy. We will need to celebrate and be open to growth, but control how and where we grow. I ask questions and challenge myself and others to critically consider all possibilities and options. I have high expectations for myself and those around me. I want Seguin to thrive and I am committed to make that happen.”
What do you believe makes you the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?
“I am committed to community service. I have worked in public education for over 22 years and served many volunteer roles for many organizations. I have been a member of several local Boards, including the Irma Lewis-Seguin Outdoor “I feel what sets me apart from my opponent is my last name. My Learning Center, the Sow Healthy Coalition, the Seguin Education Foundation mother, MaryEllen Mendez, is well known in this community. She is and the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Board. I have also served many involved in our church activities and has helped in many past election statewide organizations. I was the 2018 President of the Texas Association for campaigns. I follow in her footsteps. I am a member of Our Lady of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and a Vice-President for the Guadalupe Catholic Church. SPORTS Marion looks for second straight district win in Cotulla’s season opener, admittance denied to visiting fans & media
(Cotulla) - It’s Week 7 for most of the state’s UIL football programs in Class-4A and below, Marion included, but the Bulldogs face the unique situation of playing in an opponent’s season opener when they visit Cotulla this Friday evening. Due to COVID-19 restrictions dating back to last spring, the Cowboys reduced their season to a districtonly schedule, and one that starts a week or two later than their 14-3A-Division I opponents at that. Additionally, the Cotulla school board enacted a policy that only allows LaSalle County residents to attend home athletic events, so Marion fans will not be able to attend the game. KWED/ Seguintoday.com had planned to broadcast the game, but Cotulla ISD says its “residents only” policy includes media, and has denied our request to cover the game. Cotulla head coach David Silva and his staff have only conducted practice for a few weeks now, so facing a Marion team that began summer workouts in June and transitioned seamlessly into the August practice schedule and regular season will be a daunting challenge.
On the flip side, Ryne Miller’s Bulldogs enter the matchup without the usual familiarity that comes from scouting and preparing for an opponent with games under its belt.
“It is different, because you can scheme, scheme, scheme, but I think the big thing with it just personnel,” Miller said. “Obviously, we compared the rosters from last year to this year, who’s coming back, who’s not coming back, but it’s different. I didn’t think we’d ever be in a situation where we’re playing a game on Week 7 and this is their first game out of the gate, no scrimmage, no games under their belt. So it’s going to be a little different, but I’m just glad that we’re getting to play a district football game again.” Marion enters Friday’s matchup with a 3-3 overall record and a 1-1 district mark in Miller’s third season after dominating the second half to pull away from Lytle 27-7 last Friday. The Bulldogs’ statistical leaders on offense include junior quarterback Tanner Beakley (832 yds., 9 TD, 7 Int. passing, 171 yds., 3 TD rushing), junior running-back Aden Rackley (233 rushing yds., 1 TD), and senior receiver Jayden Williams (18 rec., 253 yds., 2 TD). Dillon Blakely and Dominic Castellanos have each caught two touchdowns
passes as well.
Williams has been the star defender observers expected to see from his outside linebacker position, totaling nine sacks and 17 tackles for loss with a fumble recovery through six games. Sophomore linebacker Kross Kelso has emerged as a force on that side of the ball as well with a team-high 76 tackles (11 for loss) to go with two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two sacks. It’s tough to know what to expect from Cotulla, given the circumstances. The Cowboys had high hopes for the season before the pandemic derailed the months leading up to it, with seven offensive starters and six on defense returning from the 2019 playoff team that went 7-4 and upset powerhouse Jourdanton in district play. Cotulla’s most accomplished offensive returnees include quarterback Elias Jones (479 passing yds., 3 TD, 478 rush yds., 1 TD) and running-back Zerrick Benavides (400 yds., 1 TD). The defense should be anchored by defensive tackle Blayde Martinez and linebacker Michael Flores, both All-District performers in 2019. Friday’s kickoff at Myers Memorial Stadium in Cotulla is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Bulldog Report with Coach Miller will air between 6:40 - 7:00 on KWED-1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Panthers seek 2-0 district start in home tilt with Eastside Memorial, Friday’s game to air on KWED
(Geronimo) - Navarro looks for its third straight win and a 2-0 record in District 14-4A-Division II Friday evening when Austin-Eastside Memorial visits Erwin-Lee Field in a Panthers vs. Panthers matchup. The local Panthers moved to 3-2 in Rod Blount’s third season as head coach with an 81-0 rout of ManorNew Tech last Friday. The visiting Panthers were not able to play a non-district schedule due to Austin’s COVID-19 restrictions. Coach Luis Becerra’s squad dropped last week’s district and season opener to Austin-Achieve 44-20 after leading 20-13 at halftime.
The district games between Navarro and Eastside Memorial have been lopsided in previous seasons, with Navarro winning 87-0 in 2018 and 54-0 last year. Eastside Memorial played well for three quarters in the loss to Austin-Achieve, but the Polar Bears pulled away with a 25-0 run in the final frame. The Panthers from Austin produced 249 rushing yards with their option attack. Running-backs Nathaniel Escalante (20 car., 97 yds.) and Mikel Casas-Barron (14 car., 55 yds., TD), and quarterback Skyler Nguyen (24 car., 86 yds., TD) did the bulk of the damage. Two lost fumbles and an interception thwarted Eastside Memorial’s chances. Blount says the the visiting Panthers’ steady improvement over the past few seasons is evident on film. “Some of the guys are now seniors who played against
us as sophomores that first year, and you can see the development with them,” Blount said. “Running the option is always scary, no matter what. It’s great for our defense to see, and make sure we’re playing responsibility football, and taking care of our guy. So it will be a good challenge for us. Those guys have stepped up, and they’re doing well. They competed hard last year, and we’re expecting them to be a little bit better this year.”
Seven different Navarro players have scored touchdowns this season, with junior fullback Orlando Ortiz’s six leading the way. Ortiz is averaging (296 yds.) is averaging 10.21 yards per carry in Blount’s Slot-T attack while sharing carries with Sam Muniga (457 rush yds., 141 rec. yds., 4 total TD), Brody Whitson (307 yds., 5 TD), and Zeke Campos (4 TD). Junior quarterback Nick Billings has thrown for 298 yards, two scores, and four interceptions while running for 136 yards and four touchdowns.
Friday’s kickoff at Erwin-Lee Field is set for 7:30 p.m. KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com will broadcast the game live. Pre-game coverage starts with the Seguin and Marion coaches’ shows at 6:45.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The ongoing coronavirus outbreak is definitely dominating the 2020 presidential election. During the vice presidential debate in Salt Lake City, California Democratic Senator Kamala [[ COMMA-lah ]] Harris slammed the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus, calling it inept. The President and First Lady Melania Trump were recently diagnosed with the virus. That means people living on less than a dollar-90 [[ $1.90 ]] a day will impact around nine-point-four-percent of the world’s population in 2020. (Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida is surpassing a grim new COVID-19 milestone. The Department of Health is confirming the state passed 15-thousand coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday. Officials are reporting 137 new resident deaths, bringing that total to 14-thousand-904. At least 180 non-residents have also died in the state. Florida also added more than 25-hundred new infections, but the positivity rate for new cases is back below five-percent after rising above that benchmark on Tuesday for the first time in two weeks.
(Undated) -- The upcoming “Jurassic World” movie is halting production after multiple positive COVID-19 cases. The director Colin Trevorrow took to Twitter to say there were “a few” cases on the “Jurassic World: Dominion” set, but all tested negative shortly after. Either way, due to safety protocols, the film is pausing production for two weeks. It’s unclear how many people were infected or who those people were. This comes just days after Universal Studios pushed the movie’s release a whole year. It is now slated to come out in June 2022.
