(Seguin) – While traditions and events at a county fair have changed over generations, there is still one thing that remains unchanged. That’s the dedication of volunteers who work together to make it all happen.

(Seguin) – A spin on the Ferris wheel doesn’t have to cost you full dollar during this year’s county fair. Advance armbands are now on sale courtesy of Pride of Texas Shows Carnival. The discounted armbands can be purchased online or picked up at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce office.

remain for you to pick up your discounted armbands.
“Our carnival armbands in advance are $25 with the Pride of Texas Carnival. That is a $30 value, and you can get them online purchased up until Oct. 11 by midnight at gcfair.org or the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce has them,” said Damerau.
Damerau says after midnight Wednesday, armbands will increase
to $30. Armbands are available to be used Thursday 5 to 10 p.m.; Friday 1 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 1 to 11 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.
Tickets will also be sold per ride during carnival hours. Parents are reminded that children must be 36” tall in order to use an armband.

(Seguin) -- The windows of downtown are decked out with signs of the fall season as part of Seguin Main Street’s Scarecrow & Skeleton Contest. As part of the contest, businesses, organizations, and individuals put up a display featuring scarecrows and skeletons in their storefront windows. If they are not near downtown, then Main Street assists with finding a window for their display.
The skeletons and scarecrows were installed last weekend and were judged on Tuesday morning by Mayor Donna Dodgen, Jennifer Sourdellia, and Gay Lynn Olsovsky.

“If they have some time and want to come out and volunteer whether its to help scan tickets at the ticket booth, sell tickets in the ticket booth or selling food tickets. That’s where our biggest need is but also have other areas like in our hospitality room (where folks are needed to) pick up food and change it out – really no experience just be willing to work and come down and have some fun. Yeah, we are working but we are kind of hanging out and we are doing stuff. We are wine tasting if someone has experience with that. We can always use an extra person in there helping us to serve wine. We have local Texas wine that we serve. Gail (Damerau) has her school tours and sometimes she needs teachers to read to her students as they come through – anything and everything – just come down and help us,” said Good.
Good says the most important thing they have found is
that when folks come out to volunteer at the fair, they always end up having a good time.
“One thing that they can do is if they come down and volunteer for two hours, work a ticket booth or something –they are going to get in free. We give them parking for free and maybe their kids are riding rides and they are older, and they don’t want to be with them 100 percent, well they can go work a ticket booth and then still go and hang out with their kids the rest of the night or go to the rodeo. Work a couple of hours and then have fun the rest of the time,” said Good.
This year’s Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo officially runs from Thursday through Sunday. Volunteer opportunities, however, are available today through Sunday.
To volunteer, a person must be at least 17 years old. Experience is also not necessary.

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran football team fell to No. 22 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 55-21, Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium in their 2023 American Southwest Conference opener.
Wide receiver Yawanathan McKenzie (San Antonio/Cornerstone Christian) led the Bulldogs (1-4) with 29 receiving yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Quarterback Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/ East Central), who made his first collegiate start on Saturday, went 17-of-27 through the air for 98 yards and two touchdowns and an interception. Bosanko would add 17 yards rushing and touchdown on the ground. DaKory Willis (Flatonia/Flatonia) led the Bulldogs with 58 yards rushing on 16 carries.
After UMHB (2-3) took a 28-0 lead through
a quarter and a half, the Bulldogs responded with a 11-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a nine-yard rushing touchdown by Bosanko.
The Bulldogs would find the end zone twice in the final minute of Saturday’s contest as Yawanathan McKenzie and Ja’Mare Nichols (San Antonio/Roosevelt) would score their first collegiate touchdowns.
Punter Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/ Canyon), who’s been one of the best punters in NCAA Division-III statistically this season, punted eight times for 264 yards with a long of 50 yards on Saturday.
Troy Tomaselli (Castroville/Cornerstone Christian) led the Bulldogs defensively with seven tackles (five solo) while Tristan Smith (New Braunfels/Canyon) tallied five tackles (four solo),
including 1.5 for loss. Christian Monroe (College Station/College Station) recorded the elusive first sack for the Bulldogs this season for one of his three tackles.

(San Diego, CA) -- Kaiser Permanente employees are continuing their strike. Tens of thousands of healthcare workers walked off the job on Wednesday after failing to reach an agreement on higher pay and improved nursing staffing levels. Michael Ramey, Kaiser San Diego employee and union president, says this is all about providing a basic standard of care. Kaiser says “several agreements over specific provisions have been reached.” This is the largest healthcare strike in U.S. history.
(Las Vegas, NV) -- A Las Vegas-based bottled water company must pay more than 228-million-dollars in damages after several people got sick from drinking its product. Real Water was connected with an outbreak of liver illnesses and one woman’s death. On Wednesday, a jury found Real Water liable for 28-and-a-half-million-dollars in compensatory damages and 200-million-dollars in punitive damages. Several people sued the company in May of 2021.
(Washington, DC) -- Facing discrimination could lead to an increased risk of obesity. That’s according to a new study published in the journal Nature Mental Health. Researchers found that those who experienced discrimination had their appetite stimulated and increasing cravings for less healthy foods. That led to stress-related weight gain. The study questioned more than 100 participants on the discrimination they face in their daily lives, then showed them images of different foods while they underwent brain scans.
(Charlottesville, VA) -- A Virginia company is developing what it says is an IUD for men. Kevin Eisenfrats, the CEO of Contraline, says his startup company’s device is even more important than ever following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. The implant procedure takes 15 minutes and it’s non-hormonal so Contraline says there are no systemic side effects. Elements of the male IUD are currently in clinical trials. The goal is to bring it to market in three to four years.
