Early Voting for Constitutional Amendments plus local jurisdictions begins today
W E E K E N D E D IT I O N
TODAY
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Guadalupe County) – Early voting in the Nov. 7 election begins today with a couple of changes to early voting locations. Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says before heading out to cast their ballots, it’s important that voters note these changes with the early voting schedule. She says voters will especially want to double check the dates and times of the six early voting locations being made available these next couple of weeks. “We have a bunch of different hours besides 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. so I’d like the voters to check our website for our early voting hours because the first week is 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, Saturday 7 to 7 p.m.; Sunday is 12 to 6 and then the last week is Monday through Friday 7 to 7 p.m. So, if the voters can’t remember that, then they want to make sure they come during the hours that we are open which we prefer, they can definitely check our website and all of our early voting locations have the same exact hours. We do have two changes in our
early voting locations. Normally, we use the Guadalupe County Annex over in Schertz as one of our early voting locations. That office was closed for renovation, so we’ve relocated over on that side of the county to the Schertz Community Center. We also have the Cibolo Fire Station over there. On this side of town, we are voting here in the main Elections Office for early voting and then normally, we are up at CTTC up in New Braunfels. That was unavailable so that location has moved to Frieden’s Church, and we have our normal location at New Berlin and Redemptive Grace up in New Braunfels. So, we have six early voting locations but there are changes to two of them and again, if voters are confused of where to go, they can call our office or check our website,” said Hayes. Hayes reminds voters of the constitutional amendments appearing on all ballots. She says others, depending on where they live in the county, could also be deciding on other issues. Voting, pg. 3

Patrol units damaged thanks to reckless driver Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Seguin Police Department and Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office patrol units appear to have been the target for a reckless driver. Seguin Police officials say on Thursday, officers observed a GMC pick-up driving into the Seguin Police Department parking lot at a high rate of speed.
They say the vehicle then fled the parking lot, cutting across the grassy embankment in a reckless manner. Despite their efforts to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, officers say the vehicle continued to flee northbound, until it reached the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office. Driver, pg. 3

Voting, continued. “In addition to the Constitutional Amendment Election, nine local jurisdictions will hold joint elections with the county. Each eligible Guadalupe County voter will receive a ballot containing the races pertinent to the address at which they are registered to vote,” said Hayes. The nine local entities having an issue on the ballot include city of Marion, the city of Schertz , Green Valley Special Utility District, Schertz-Universal City ISD, New Braunfels ISD, Meadow Lake Water Control Improvement District; Guadalupe County (Municipal Utility District) MUD 4, Guadalupe County MUD 6 and Guadalupe County MUD 10,” said Hayes. Hayes says her office is doing its best to prepare voters
the best they can. She says taking a look at their ballot prior to voting is always the best place to start. “We always encourage voters to prepare by viewing a sample ballot. Sample ballots are available at the Elections Office, 215 S. Milam Street in Seguin or voters can also access their sample ballot online by clicking the sample ballot link on the Guadalupe County Elections Office webpage. The link opens a sample ballot look-up feature, which voters can access using their name and date of birth. The sample ballot will then appear in both English and Spanish,” said Hayes. Early voting hours, locations, and sample ballots are all available on Guadalupe County’s website, www.co.guadalupe. tx.us, with a quick link to the election information page on the home page. The elections office can also be contacted by calling (830) 303-6363. Driver, continued. Texas Lutheran Falls to East Texas Baptist, 16-6, on Homecoming Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing
SEGUIN, Texas -- A packed Bulldog Stadium that saw the crowd overflow onto the berms surrounding the field saw a defensive battle in American Southwest Conference (ASC) play as East Texas Baptist crashed the Bulldogs homecoming party, defeating TLU 16-6. DaKory Willis (Flatonia/Flatonia) scored the Bulldogs lone touchdown on a 43-yard connection from Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central). With the loss, Texas Lutheran falls to 1-6 and 0-3 in ASC play while ETBU improves to 4-3 and 3-1 in conference. ETBU would score on a 53-yard passing touchdown on their opening score to take a 7-0 lead before the Tiger offense would stall until a field goal
halfway through the second quarter, extending their lead to 10-0. ETBU would score on their opening drive of the second half taking a 16-0 lead after the extra point was blocked by Joshua Stanton (Houston/Lamar). Texas Lutheran started to finally get some momentum late in the third following the passing touchdown to Willis shrunk the Tiger lead to 16-6 after a failed two-point conversion. The Bulldogs would force an ETBU punt and would drive the length of the field before missing a 19-yard field goal - shifting momentum back to the Tigers. Neither team was able to find the end zone in the fourth quarter as the game concluded with a 16-6 final.
Caden Bosanko led the Bulldogs with 72 yards on 17 carries and finished 10-of-25 passing for 130 yards with a touchdown. Following a fourth quarter injury, sophomore Bryce Nirider (Katy/Needville) would make his collegiate debut finishing 5-of-9 for 57 yards and two interceptions. Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/Canyon) - who entered Saturday ranked 11th in NCAA Division-III in punting - punted six times for 270 yards with a touchback. Welch increased his punting average to 42.7 yards per punt - just shy of the program record of 43.0 yards per punt set by Harold Anderson in 1962. James Gipson (Castroville/Medina Valley) led the Bulldogs with eight tackles on Saturday.

Report: Cost Of Health Insurance Plans Is Going Up (San Francisco, CA) -- The cost of health insurance is going up. The Kaiser Family Foundation has released its annual employer health benefits survey and it shows the average cost for a family health insurance plan offered through an employer rose seven-percent this year. The report says that’s the highest rate increase in a decade, and that higher prices are likely in the coming weeks when employers start enrollment for 2024 insurance plans. Over 150-million Americans get health insurance through their jobs. Adult ADHD Linked To Heightened Dementia Risk (New Brunswick, NJ) -- Results from a study 20 years in the making show adults with ADHD are significantly more likely to develop dementia later in life. Researchers at Rutgers followed more than 100-thousand patients from 2003 to 2020, hoping to determine whether adults living with ADHD are more prone to developing Alzheimer’s or other neurodegenerative diseases. What they found was those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were three times more likely to develop dementia, even when accounting for other risk factors. The study also suggested treatment using psychostimulants like Adderall might help reduce long-term cognitive decline, though the authors noted a need for more research. About threepercent of American adults live with ADHD. Study Shows Great Demand For Doctors (undated) -- A new study shows that the demand for medical doctors is growing faster than what’s available on Long Island and the rest of the country. The study by Northwell Health reveals that over the next ten years, due to the aging population, there’s going to be the potential for a shortage of 124-thousand primary and speciality physicians. Another issue is physicians who currently specialize in treating older Americans, will be retiring. In addition, the high cost for medical school, with many students ending up in debit, also affects career choices. Report: Climate-Caused Wildfires Cost the United States Up to $900 Billion (Scotland) -- A study shows that seaweed was once a staple food for ancient Europeans. That’s according to analysis of molecules from fossilized dental plaque. Prior research according to CNN suggests that the introduction of farming moved ancient humans away from eating seaweed and aquatic plants. An author of the study from the University of Glasgow said in a statement that it’s “exciting to be able to show definitively that seaweeds and other local freshwater plants were eaten across a long period in our European past.”
