Excited about the news is Seguin Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones. Jones says he first has to thank the voters of Seguin and anyone else for helping to make this happen. He adds that throughout the six weeks contest, Seguin held the lead for most nominations. “Certainly, the thanks really goes to the city of Seguin, the residents, everyone who participated in nominating Starcke Park for this $75,000 Perk Your Park Grant from Niagara. There was 30,000 nominations, 30,000 folks supported this project in Seguin. To put that in perspective, there were nine worthy projects that were being considered. Win, pg. 4

County judge orders lifting of burn ban Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The wet weather has allowed Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher to safely lift the burn ban for the unincorporated areas of the county. For months, the dry vegetation and hot temperatures have remained a critical threat, keeping area fire fighters busy. Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says over the last few days, the county has seen significant rainfall allowing for the KBDI (Keetch-Byram Drought Index) to decrease-- putting them under the threshold for the requirements of a burn ban. “The county can start burning their debris or trash and things like
that. The fire marshal’s office will not require burn permits and folks can take care of the stuff that they need to. We always recommend that people, when they are burning, they are careful, they are cautious and if the fire gets out of control or if they have any issues to call 9-11 and we’ll get a fire truck headed their way,” said Pinder.
Dottsy to host Reunion Show At The Texas Theater Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Heart of Texas Records is proud to present “Dottsy and Friends Reunion Show” at the Texas Theater in Seguin, Texas, on Saturday, Oct.28. The show begins at 5 p.m. Dottsy will be joined by her special guest Lanette Pennell as well as former band members Clark Grein, Howard and Marianne Hudiburg and Kaye Tolson. The Heart of Texas Band will also perform plus Tracy Pitcox will serve as the MC for the show. Former RCA recording artist Dottsy began singing
in public at the age of 10. She was inducted as a member of the Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Fame in 1998. Tops songs have included “Storms Never Last,” “After Sweet Memories, Play Born To Loose Again,” “I’ll Be
Your San Antonio Rose,” and “Trying To Satisfy You.” Legendary country music artist Waylon Jennings also joined Dottsy on the song “Tryin To Satisfy You.” Dottsy joined Heart of Texas Records releasing her first album in over a decade. “Meet Me In Texas” contained some of Dottsy’s re recorded older hits as well as some new songs. Admission is $15 for general admission and $20 for reserved seating. Tickets are now on sale by calling (830) 372-6168 or (830) 401-1971 or www.thetexas.org.
Seguin’s Premiere Medispa Although, it is safe to burn, Pinder still warns that all wind requirements remain in place. “TCEQ has set wind requirements. So, if the winds are under 6 mph or over 26 mph, you are not allowed to burn. The reason for the low end is to keep the smoke from staying in the area so you are not bothering your neighbors. Smoke sometimes bothers those folks. So, we want to make sure that the wind is above 6 mph and under 26 mph. Anything over that, you risk that chance of that fire spreading rapidly and damaging your property or someone else’s property,” said Pinder. The lifting of the burn ban went into effect Thursday morning. Pecan Fest, continued. The Big Red Barn host its own set of events to include things such as an antique tractor pull, farm animals, dog costume contest, rope making, and a pecan baking contest plus tours of its buildings such as the Texas Pecan Museum. Activities at the Big Red Barn will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Seguin Film & Arts Fest at the Palace Theatre will also be returning. Tickets are free to this independent film festival where cinephiles can catch feature films and shorts throughout the weekend. A total of 21 short films from throughout Texas, the U.S. and from around the world will be shown beginning at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. Film showings will follow at 12:30, 4:30 and 6:15 p.m. Awards will follow at 7:30 p.m. Immediately following will be a screening of the horror clastic House on Haunted Hill featuring Vincent Price. The event is free. Details can be found at SeguinFestival.org. A complete listing of all events to include the Hats Off to Juan Seguin Pub Crawl and Get “Cracking” Contest can be found at visitseguin. com or at SeguinToday.com.

Win, continued. So of the nine projects out there, there was a total of 80,000 nominations so of the 80,000, 30,000 of those nominations were in support of the Starcke Park playground. So, that just speaks volumes of the support that we got from the Seguin community to make this grant possible,” said Jones. Jones says the drive to go after this money came after the city was forced to demolition the old Kids Kingdom playground at Max Starcke Park. He say the aging playscape was just too dangerous for local kids. Although they knew that winning the contest was not going to be enough to cover the total cost of the playscape, they did know it would serve as the catalyst to get things going. That’s because while the Perk Your Park nomination process was underway, Jones says the park’s board was tasked by both the mayor and city council to come up with a plan to replace what had been removed. “So, we’ve been working on that for months now and the park’s board has made a recommendation for a $650,000 playground to replace the one that was removed and I’m going to take that recommendation to city council at their next meeting on Nov. 7 and we are short a little bit of funding. There is $75,000 from the Perk Your Park, $300,000 that the council has already earmarked but we all knew that we need more money to make a nice playground and I’m going to propose that we make up the difference of approximately $300,000. It’s coming out of the park development fund. It’s a fund that is set aside when developers come and build subdivisions. They do put money into this account so the city can use for community parks, or trails and things like that that the community can use,” said Jones. Not only has it helped ensure the necessary funding, but Jones says it has also ensured a better timeline to get the project done. “If the council approves the expenditure and approves the design on Nov. 7, we will work with this vendor and hopefully within the next six months afterward, we will have a new playground out there,” said Jones. Since 2016, The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the nation’s leading advocate for parks and recreation, and Niagara Bottling, the family owned beverage company have been empowering communities to embrace healthy lifestyles by getting residents and visitors alike to enjoy vibrant and family-oriented outdoor spaces. Throughout their partnership, 17 parks across the United States have benefit from the Perk Your Park Contest.
Eurydice opens tonight at TLU
Dramatic Media Department takes on a tale of Greek love (Seguin) -- How we move forward after the death of a loved one is a quandary that has inspired artists since time immemorial. In celebration of Día de los Muertos and Halloween, TLU's Dramatic Media Department is presenting an imaginative, media-enhanced production of Eurydice—a 2003 award-winning retelling of the classic Greek myth Orpheus, by Sarah Ruhl. Though Eurydice honors the classic Greek love story whereby Orpheus enchants death with a song in an attempt to rescue his wife from the underworld, Ruhl reimagines the myth through the eyes of the heroine. Facing the death of her father when she penned the play, Ruhl tweaked this classic by adding a subplot involving the death of Eurydice's father. Inspired by the original love story and Ruhl's exploration of loss, the TLU production weaves projection, media, and classic stagecraft to bring to life
Ruhl's elements of melancholy, comedy, beauty and magic. TLU Dramatic Media Chair Dave Legore explained why he chose to produce and direct Eurydice at this particular time. "The themes of Eurydice are timeless and universal, but they also resonate well with a college audience," Legore said. "Young adults often navigate the same interpersonal dynamics found in the play, while also struggling with the real potential for loss and
transition in their own life." Eurydice opens in the Studio Theatre on October 27 at 7:30 pm, and continue on October 28, November 3, and 4 also at 7:30pm. Matinee performances will take place at 2:30pm on October 29, and November 3. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, students and veterans. Entry is free with a TLU ID. Community members can visit tludramaticmedia.com to make reservations.

COVID Vaccine And High Dose Flu Shot Linked To Strokes (Undated) -- COVID vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna could be linked to a small increase in the risk of stroke when given alongside a high-dose flu vaccine. That’s according to a new analysis from the FDA. The high-dose flu shot is usually given to older people and the increase in stroke risk was seen most in people 85 and older. It’s possible that if confirmed, the stroke risk may be due to the flu vaccine alone.
