Blue Santa to benefit from Spazmatics concert at The Backyard Owners offer final concert before selling property Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Owners of The Backyard will be transporting the community back to the 80s with this Friday night’s special live performance by The Spazmatics. Not only will 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program, but the concert will be the final event for the owners who are currently in the process of selling the property located at 225 N. Saunders St. It’s almost been three years since the former Seguin ISD kindergarten campus was transformed into a retail, food, and live concert venue. In closing this final chapter

for The Backyard, one of its owners, Alfredo Leos, says not only did they want people to have fun, but they also wanted them to share in the holiday spirit of giving back. “This will be our last concert and so I talked to my sister, my wife and my brotherin-law and I said ‘hey, why don’t we just have this event and actually give everything back.’ And so, they loved the idea. I talked with the police chief and fire and the city, and they okayed it. It’s kind of last minute, unfortunately, that we are trying to put it together, but we are hoping that everybody can come out. Spazmatics, pg. 3

Seguin ISD credited for creation of Texas Wildlife and Conservation Month Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

Deadline arrives

for Holiday Stroll Parade Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Seguin is inviting you to help usher in the 2023 Holiday Season. Today is the deadline to enter this year’s Lighted Holiday Stroll Parade in downtown Seguin. The parade is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30. Lindsay Hajek of the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department says the city is anticipating another successful holiday parade. "Currently, we have 80 entries and last year, we were looking at right about 100 so we are doing pretty good to be on par for last year," said Hajek. Anyone wishing to join in on the holiday fun is invited to participate. Plus, she says there is no cost to enter. "So, businesses, individuals, schools, bands -- any type of organization that would like to represent their group can sign up for the parade. We do have two categories for the parade, so it is a competition. There is the commercial and the non-commercial category. So, we will have a first, second and third place for both categories," said Hajek. The only requirement, however, is holiday lighting. Hajek says lighting is a must. “You have to have lights definitely. It is a lighted parade, so we like to see of course that beautiful sparkle that makes us think of the Christmas season so the more lights, the better. That's definitely part of it," said Hajek. An online form to sign-up is available at https://txseguin2.civicplus.com/784/Holiday-Stroll-Parade. The link can also be found on the park’s office Facebook page. They may also contact the parks office at 830-401-2480.

(Seguin) – This November and all Novembers from here on out will be designated as Texas Wildlife and Conservation Month. This is not just another idea but an idea that originated here in Seguin. Sharing his inspiration to introduce the legislation is Sean Hoffmann, Seguin ISD’s chief communications officer. Hoffmann says it was during a conversation with Pete Silvius, Seguin ISD’s whole child coordinator, that the idea was put into motion. "We were talking about Outdoor Ed and I think we may have been up at the HEB Camp at the time and we were talking about programming and how to get more students involved, especially in Seguin. There are woods and fields just outside of Seguin, just being the community, it is. However, there's that reality that many of our students in Seguin ISD don't get to travel too far outside the city limits and often times, their experience with being outdoors is coming through the school system itself whether it be kayaking on the Guadalupe River or mountain biking with Pete or doing some sort of hiking activity. A lot of it is generating through the school system," said Hoffmann Hoffmann says it just made sense to raise awareness on the wildlife resources and ecological regions that are home to wildlife in Texas. He says despite the millions of dollars that are generated annually through wildlife and outdoor pursuits, the men quickly realized there was no official designation in Texas. "Here in Texas, we designate a lot of days and a lot of months and a lot of weeks on different things -- all good things. The fact that we have such a diversified body of wildlife as well as the environments that support wildlife in the state, I thought, 'hey, why don't we talk to Representative ( John) Kuempel (from Seguin) and see if we can move forward with this?’ So, we finally got it passed this last legislative session, the 88th. We tried for it in the 87th and it didn't pass for whatever reason, but we were fortunate to have it passed in the 88th. I'm glad it did and I'm glad it came from the Seguin ISD and that the idea originated with conversations that we had here within the district," said Hoffmann. Hoffmann drafted a proposal for the designation and forwarded it to Rep Kuempel in January 2023. Jumping on board as a co-sponsor of House Concurrent Resolution (H.C.R) 77 was Sen. Judith Zaffirini. Spazmatics, continued. The weather looks like it’s going to be great, so we are thankful for that. Hopefully, a lot of the town will come out to not only enjoy a great show but also know that that money is going towards a kid or for a family for Christmas,” said Leos.

www.SEGUINTODAY.com

Leos says most importantly, they’ve made tickets reasonable so that all families can enjoy themselves. “It’s really all ages. It’s $12 to get in but again,100 percent of that is going to Blue Santa. Some people are asking, ‘is it after you pay the artist and all the other stuff that comes with it?’ But no, we are

THU. November 16, 2023

literally going to give 100 percent of the ticket sales back. We are spending quite a bit on this show so I’m hoping that a lot of the town comes out and supports it just to know that we are willing to put up the money in order for them to have a good time but then again knowing that that money is going back to a great cause and maybe getting a good show at the same time,” said Leos. Meanwhile, as some of the acquisition details are limited, Leos believes the public can be assured that the businesses on site will continue as normal. Plus, he is optimistic that this transition will bring more regular and perhaps even larger concert acts along with more retail and restaurant options for the community. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the concert following at 8 p.m. Friday. Group tables are also still available for $250 each. Individual tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door or online at prekindle.com. A link for online tickets can be found on The Backyard Facebook page. Parking is encouraged all around the property, including at the Seguin Post Office.

Conservation, continued. Although signed in May by Gov. Abbott, Silvius says the designation of November as Texas Wildlife and Conservation Month is made even more special as the Seguin ISD officially closes this month on the purchase of the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. "I think it goes to show that it's one more level of evidence that we really believe in Seguin -- that protecting our natural spaces is important. That designation that Sean was able to secure through the state and with the help of Representative ( John) Kuempel to get that name Texas Conservation and Wildlife Month in November (and) to have us close on this property that is going to allow us to actually provide programming that lives into what the intention of that designation month means is huge," said Silvius. Silvius says he commends Hoffmann for taking a discussion, creating awareness statewide, and acknowledging all the good things happening in the Seguin ISD. “So, the sky is the limit when we think about what that programming could look like. We dream about celebrating the month of November in the future with many opportunities for the community to engage with the space out at the Outdoor Learning Center whether that's through educational programs or through recreational programs or just even being in nature having a walk on some of the trails. All of those opportunities, we plan to

extend to the community and really celebrate the month of November for years to come out there. Having that come out from the Seguin ISD is really cool!" said Silvius. Hoffmann says he chose November because the month lends itself to getting outside. Temperatures have usually moderated to the point where it is comfortable to recreate outdoors to hike, pedal, camp and birdwatch. Plus, he says hunting seasons for some of Texas’ most popular game animals begin in November. Meanwhile, the new state recognition was recently shared across the state and nation in this month’s issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine. The story titled, “Wildlife, Texas’ Version” featured the Seguin ISD and its efforts to push the observance forward.

Area high school basketball roundup Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors got off to a fast start in their season opener to cruise past Young Men’s Leadership Academy, 82-28 on Tuesday night at Goldie Harris Gym. The Matadors used a 26-0 run between the first and second quarters to open up a 30 point lead and never looked back. Seguin sophomore forward Corey Dailey and senior guard John Jackson played a two-man game with Dailey operating on the high post and finding Jackson on several cuts to the basket. Dailey would finish the game with 18 points. Jackson had a gamehigh 30 points, outscoring the Lions all by himself. Seguin head coach Guy Nowlin talked about Jackson’s team player approach after the game. “John’s a team-first guy. He doesn’t worry about the points he scores and all the records he’s attained,” Nowlin said. “He wants to win. The first thing he told me after the buzzer sounded, ‘great way to start the season coach, 1-0.’ So, that’s our mantra.” The Matadors will be off the rest of the week. Seguin will host San Antonio Lanier this coming Monday for a matinee. Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m. at Goldie Harris. (New Braunfels) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors fell to 1-2 on the season,

dropping a 70-42 decision at New Braunfels on Tuesday night. Seniors Desiree Zuniga and Jazmine Missildine paced the Lady Mats, scoring in double figures. Zuniga had 16 points while Missildine chipped in with 12 points. The Seguin girls will next head to the Floresville basketball tournament. That tournament will start on Thursday. (Geronimo) -- The Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers are 2-1 on the season after dispatching Lytle, 52-33 on Tuesday night at Navarro High School. Junior Tegan Harborth lead the Runnin’ Lady Panther attack with 26 points. Navarro will also head to Floresville tournament on Thursday. The Navarro boys team fell 60-43 to La Vernia in their season opener at Navarro High School on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers will travel to Hondo for their second game of the season on Friday. The game tips at 6:30 p.m. (Prairie Lea) -- The Lifegate Lady Falcons were a road winner on Tuesday night, taking down Prairie Lea 57-30. Junior Anelyna Cavazos lead the Lady Falcons with 27 points on the night. Lifegate is now 3-0 on the season. The Lady Falcons host Founders Classical Academy on Thursday.

Medicaid Enrollment Expected To Drop (Undated) -- Medicaid enrollment is expected to drop by more than eight-and-a-half percent in the upcoming year. State spending on Medicaid is expected to go up, however, as federal matching funds also expire. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says a judge has ordered 58-year-old Angel Elliot Dalfin to spend the next eight months under home confinement and serve five years on probation. Dalfin was previously told to pay millions of dollars for putting people’s health at risk. That money is going towards childhood lead poisoning prevention programs. Nurses Strike At RWJUH Continues With No End In Sight (New Brunswick, NJ) -- The strike by nurses at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is in its third month -- with no end in sight. The strike passed its 100-day mark this past weekend. More than 17-hundred nurses have been on the picket line in New Jersey since early August, demanding better staffing ratios, better pay and a cap on health insurance costs. Nurses contend their demands would ensure better patient care and safety. The hospital maintains it has given its best offer and would make staffing levels the highest in the state.
