Candidate seeks office of Guadalupe County Sheriff Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – After a year of serving directly under the leadership of Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke, Chief Deputy Joshua Ray says he is ready to take over as the next top county lawman. Ray has officially announced his bid to seek the Republican nomination for Guadalupe County Sheriff during the March 2024 Primary. The announcement came soon after Zwicke publicly announced his decision not to seek reelection. Ray says his time at the sheriff ’s office this past year has provided him with the insight he feels he needs to assume the role. “It’s really the culmination of my career. I spent my entire adult life in public service. It started when I enlisted in the Marine Corps and then I followed by dad’s footsteps and went into law enforcement. I’ve been in law enforcement for 23 years now. I had the opportunity last year to retire from the Texas Rangers and serve as the chief deputy at the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office. During this last year, I’ve been able to serve under Sheriff Zwicke which has been great for me because I’m serving under a man who has done it for 23 years and through this last year, I have been able to
supervise and learn every aspect of the sheriff ’s office and be a part of everything that we have done over the last year from managing a $17 million budget to acquiring pay raises for our deputies and to be involved with each of our divisions during enforcement capacity each and every day whether it’s recover stolen vehicles, working homicide investigations, helping our Cold Case investigators, narcotics task force - every aspect of the sheriff ’s office,” said Ray. Ray looks forward to building upon the legacy

and foundation already established by Sheriff Zwicke who during his announcement to the public also endorsed Ray’s candidacy. Ray says his intentions are to operate the sheriff ’s office with the same values he incorporates into his own life. He describes it as leadership grounded in transparency, integrity, community engagement and professionalism. “I am an open and honest man. Integrity is all that I am. I am a man of integrity, a man of faith. My faith really guides who I am. I am a Christian man. I’m a family man. Other than my faith, my family is probably the most important aspect of my life and that really defines who I am -- not just as a man but as a law enforcement professional. I care about people. I got into public service because I care about people. Sheriff Zwicke said he wanted to select somebody that would have the citizens of Guadalupe County in mind, and I think that’s very very important for a sheriff because a sheriff to me is the elected representative of the people in law enforcement. I just plan to carry on that tradition just like the sheriff has,” said Ray. The Republican and Democratic Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

TLU to celebrate, honor the Mexican American/Latinx Veterans this Saturday
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Texas Lutheran University this weekend will take special notice of a very deserving group of veterans. In a collaborative effort with a number of organizations, the university this Saturday will be honoring all veterans in the Seguin community especially its Mexican American/Latinx Veterans from TLU. Together, The Center for Mexican American Studies, the Mexican American Student Association (MASA), Jessica Anderson - director of first-year experience & student transitions, plus the local Veteran community are excited to present the first ever Día de los Veteranos de TLU y Seguin. Dr. Cesar Silva, an assistant professor and director of the Center for Mexican American Studies, says the day long celebration on Saturday will be split into three events. The first he says is a lowrider and classic car show outside the Langner Hall parking lot located at 502 Prexy Dr. “We are going to do a car show. We are going to
combine it with a food truck. We are going to combine it with the Color guard from the DAV here in Seguin. The DAV and PTSD van(s) that they have are going to offer their services here. We are going to have a DJ playing music and then at the end of the parking lot, we are going to have some vendors, some local vendors set up from 3 to 6 p.m.,” said Silva. Next on the list will be a formal proclamation observing TLU’s attempts to not only honor this particular group but all veterans in both the TLU and Seguin communities. “Between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m., inside in our center for Mexican American Studies which is right next door to the parking lot, we are having a commemoration ceremony along with just honoring the history of the Vets and we are going to have some pictures that they have offered to us, some personal letters that they have offered to us -- we are putting them up across the room just to kind of let the people know the long history that Mexican-Americans and Latin X Veterans, pg. 3

Local church to serve free turkey dinner, provides chance to win meal Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- A Thanksgiving tradition continues this weekend at Life Changing Church. The local church is again inviting families over for its Sunday service, a free turkey dinner plus the chance to win a Thanksgiving basket. Sister Pamela Wheeler says this remains one of the most important outreach efforts for the church. "It's the same format. 'Jesus. Others.' That's our main mission goal, our statement, our motto for our community. It's free. Come. Show up. You have to be there to win. Enjoy service and then of course, we serve dinner, a Thanksgiving dinner afterwards. You enter the drawing and
then, we pull your name. If we pull your name, you win a Thanksgiving basket including a turkey," said Wheeler. Wheeler says the Thanksgiving service is more than just ensuring a holiday meal. She says it's about meeting the needs of the individual. "One of the reasons why it is so important to me is because this is how I came to the church. This is how I found my walk and my purpose in service. This is my community. This is where my passion lies is to help people where I came from -- helping me feed my family and finding a purpose in my life to better myself. I am now a nursing student in pediatric oncology and I just want to see others succeed

SEGUIN, Texas -- DJ Ardoin (Houston/Pearland) scored four points in the final minute, including drawing a foul with four seconds left to give Texas Lutheran their decisive lead as TLU upset No. 15 Mary Hardin-Baylor 78-77 at Memorial Gymnasium Wednesday night for their first win of the season. The win is the first win over UMHB since 2016. Ardoin finished with a team-high 15 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs (1-2). Ardoin scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half. Mason Wallace (San Antonio/Judson), who had a clutch layup that turned into a three-point play to give TLU a 77-76 lead with 42 seconds left, finished with 12 points off the bench. LaDarius King (Austin/St. Stephen’s Episcopal) also played a pivotal role in the second half - scoring seven of his nine points in the half. The Top 25 win is the first for head coach Austin Falke and is the first for TLU since Nov. 28, 2015 when the Bulldogs upset East Texas Baptist, 79-78, at Memorial Gymnasium in the TLU Bulldog Classic, a game in which Falke would serve as an assistant coach under Jimmy Smith. When the game ended, the Bulldogs celebrated with a raucous crowd specifically “The Kennel” Student Section within the “Dog House” Memorial Gymnasium led by Ardoin, Xavier Phillips (Austin/Dripping Springs), and Easton Allen (New Braunfels/Marion). Phillips finished with 10 points while Allen scored six points and grabbed five rebounds. Freshman Carter
Lewis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) was also huge off the bench for the Bulldogs scoring a career-high 12 points and grabbing a game-high seven rebounds. Texas Lutheran finished with a 39-25 advantage in bench points and 4031 rebounding edge. In a game that rivaled a postseason atmosphere, Texas Lutheran led their ranked opponent for 31:12 of the 40 minute ball game despite the game seeing 14 lead changes and 11 ties. The game was evenly matched throughout as the Bulldogs one point halftime lead proved to be the difference as the two teams scored 44 points each in the second half. Life Expectancy Falls (Undated) -- Life expectancy in the U.S. keeps falling. According to new research published this week in JAMA Internal Medicine, life expectancy for men is at 73-point-two years, nearly six years shorter than women at 79-point-one years. It’s the widest gap between the two since 1996. The overall life expectancy in 2022 was 76-point-one years, down from 78-point-eight in 2019. The numbers are significantly lower than other wealthy nations. 36M Adults Get COVID Shot (Atlanta, GA) -- About 36 million U.S. adults have gotten the updated COVID-19 vaccine. That’s about 14 percent of the adult population. The CDC says about three and a half million children have also gotten the shot. Around 91 million adults have gotten a flu shot this year. Seattle, SF Mayors Urge Congressional Leaders To Boost Funding To Combat Fentanyl Crisis (Seattle, WA) -- West Coast mayors are banding together to urge members of Congress to boost funding to combat the fentanyl crisis. San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, along with 35 other U.S. mayors, have sent a letter to congressional leaders asking them to pass President Joe Biden’s supplemental funding request, which includes critical resources to address the fentanyl and synthetic opioid crisis. The program provides funding for opioid use disorder treatment, overdose prevention measures like naloxone, and recovery support services. Military Abortion Policy Criticized (Washington, DC) -- A group of more than two dozen Senate Republicans have sent a letter to the Secretary of Defense, asking for the end of a controversial abortion policy. It orders the federal government to pay for official travel for active-duty personnel to end a pregnancy if they’re stationed in a state where the procedure banned. Both Texas Senators, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, have signed on to the letter suggesting that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is politicizing the military.
