Vol Vol #4 #3 Mar Feb 2022 2022
in SPH Lippo Village Dear Parents and Friends, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11)
We certainly did not anticipate two years of disruption, and know many industries and businesses are hoping and praying to back to normal soon, we know that God is sovereign. Amid difficulties and new challenges, He is faithful.
March 21, almost two years to the date when Home Learning first started, students and teachers had our first ‘normal’ week of school! It was great having students attending classes a full day for the whole week. Wow, it has been a long time! It was wonderful to hear students playing on the playgrounds, in the canteens, saying hello in the hallways before or after school and between classes.
I want to express a sincere thank you to our teachers, for your diligent work and the many hours of extra preparation and planning as you adapted lessons for the various settings so that our students didn’t miss a beat! We are thankful to the Lord for your faithfulness to SPH and your labor to honor Christ.
Over the past several months, teachers and students learned how to learn in new ways. We certainly prefer face-to-face learning and are very thankful to have students back fulltime. God has been faithful and allowed significant growth and continued education during home learning, hybrid, and now back to full in person.
Because He is faithful, Gregg Thompson Head of School SPH Lippo Village

Days of School
We finally open our school five days a week! Starting on March 21, students from all grade levels finally can come to school every day. This was a momentous day as we are slowly but steadily gaining back our confidence to come back to campus; just like the normal old days but with strict health protocols. On their first day of coming back to school for a full week, students were greeted with some welcoming cookies before they started their day. It's great to be able to go to school every day! 2 sph.edu

K2 Bicycle & Scooter Day Ding…ding…ding! Careful, our kindy students are coming through! In March, one of our K2 activities was “Bicycle and Scooter Day.” Early in the morning, the sounds of the bicycle bells could be heard near the kindergarten playground. You could see how excited the children were, riding their bikes and scooters around. Through this activity, the students learned that a bicycle is one method of transportation that they can use to move from one place to another place. They also had the chance to practice their gross and fine motor skills when pedaling and pressing the brakes. In addition to that, Mr. Ian created a real-life situation: they must stop when there is a red traffic light and let people cross the street. The students also worked on learning how to be mindful of others, especially letting others go first in order to avoid bumping into each other!

SPH WORKSHOP #1
For our first workshop of the year, we held the workshop titled “IB PYP or Cambridge, How to Choose?” We invited two SPH curriculum coordinators, Ibu Fany Rundupadang (PYP Coordinator from SPH Sentul City) and Ms. Jonah Narciso (Curriculum Coordinator at SPH Pluit Village) to present on this topic.
When we think of Cambridge, we often imagine it to be subject-based and textbook-led, whereas IB is inquiry-based learning and leans more towards big ideas and skills such as communication, thinking, etc. Although these stereotypes are true to a certain degree, Dr. Barry, our Director of Learning, has explained that good international school practice merges them.
Since we use IB and Cambridge among our five campuses, we recognize that parents often ask about the difference between these two curricula. How these curricula work and how SPH implements them in day-to-day teaching is crucial for parents to understand in order to better support their child’s education.
An excellent school should have robust subject frameworks and focus on big ideas. Most importantly, we at SPH consider how these curricula serve the main purpose of meeting the six Expected Student Outcomes (ESOs).
SPH's Expected Student Outcomes
Flourishing Learners
Truth Seekers
Servant Leaders
Faithful Disciples
Confident Communicators
World Changers

Congrats!
Gracelyn Sukandi (Gr. 11)
Phoebe Bintoro (Gr. 11)
Best Speakers from National Schools Debating Championship (NSDC) Congratulations to two of our Grade 11 students, Gracelyn Sukandi and Phoebe Bintoro, for earning the Best Speaker award from NSDC!
In each round, participants are given a motion and only given 30 minutes to build a solid case as a team without searching on the internet. After that, each speaker will deliver a 7 min 20-sec speech about their case to persuade the judges.
Gracelyn and Phoebe also teamed up with a student from another school to represent the Banten province on the national stage.
"We debated about economics, politics, social, and cultural motions which required a lot of prior knowledge to begin with," Phoebe said.
Before they reached the national round, they competed against 2,000 participants from across the country, which was narrowed down to 105. In the national round, their team reached the octo-final round.
We are proud of what Gracelyn and Phoebe have achieved!

Draw Your Teachers as Movie Characters! ArtsAc 'Draw Your Teacher' Competition
Can you guess who is the teacher on the drawing above? It's Pak Barto, our SS Science teacher as Atom, one of DC comics superhero characters!
Through this competition, the ArtsAc committee garnered appreciation for teachers through healthy competition and artistic expression.
In the hopes of fostering SPH students’ creativity while showing appreciation to SPH’s beloved teachers, the Student Council’s ArtsAc committee hosted a Draw Your Teacher competition!
About SS Student Council & ArtsAc Committee Our SPH LV student council is a diverse community that represents the student body at SPH. Their goal is to build an interconnected student body through meaningful student experiences and interactions as well as to promote a sense of unity and belonging in the school community.
In the recent ‘Draw Your Teacher’ competition, students were invited to draw their teachers as a movie character and submit it along with a description of their personal vision for the drawing in order to win SPH merch prizes.
The ArtsAc Committee in the Student Council is a branch that primarily focuses on the arts and academics aspect of the student body. Their aim is to become an avenue for the entire student body to channel their gifts and talents, or just to explore their curiosity outside of academic studies.
The committee received diverse and creative entries and publicly displayed them on the Student Council’s Instagram story for a popular vote, where they collectively accumulated an enthusiastic response of almost 100 votes!

PARENTING TIPS
Five Ways Parents Can Support Their First Grader Succeed in School Entering primary school is one of the most exciting phases for our young ones! At school, first graders will most likely experience more structured and challenging lessons and tasks than they are used to. Parents sometimes worry about whether or not their child will do well in school. If you are looking for some tips to support your Grade 1 child, we’ve got you covered!
Encourage your child to love reading Fluency in language will develop as children understand the relationship between letters and sounds and hear complete sentences. Now is the perfect time for you to boost their reading skills. Fifteen minutes every day is a good start to cultivating a reading habit with your child. Remember to read in both Bahasa and English!
Make math part of everyday life Embrace math as a part of everyday life by counting the things you see, using math words in conversation by asking questions like, “If Daddy takes his cup to work, how many do we have left?” Talk about the shapes you see around you, like the shape of the table, door, or wheel. Also, try integrating math into fun games!
Build your child’s attention span & listening skills Young children have a short attention span that we need to work on growing. Since children need to listen to the teachers a bit longer, parents can support by building their child’s listening skills through everyday communication. Teach them to make eye contact when they are being talked to, remind them to follow instructions well, and have them work on longer projects.

More hands-on or active plays, less screen time These days children are exposed to a lot of screen time in part due to online learning sessions. Children are created to be active, and too much screen time is detrimental to their whole development. Incorporate more hands-on or active plays in your child's daily schedule. Look for simple yet fun game ideas, or simply have an active outdoor activity with your child.
Praise and give words of encouragement Around the age of 6-7, children usually begin to be more self-conscious, insecure, and sensitive towards failure or criticism. It is our job as parents to reassure them and build their healthy confidence by giving appropriate praise when they succeed at a task or lifting them up when they are down or discouraged.
Grade 1 at SPH LV is an awesome place to kickstart your child’s journey into primary school. Next month, we will hold another Grade 1 Trial Class for parents and kids to have firsthand experience of our Grade 1. Don't forget to share this info to your families and friends!
