What's On

Vol #1 Dec 2021

SPH Lippo Village Dear SPH Parents and School Family, I remember the tremendous hole left at the passing of my dad over 10 years ago now; I still miss being able to call him up to chat or get his opinion on something.

As we enter our Christmas break and as Semester 1 ends, it’s been good to spend some time reflecting on the busyness of the past few months as we shifted from all online Home Learning to the mix of oncampus and online learning in Hybrid. Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and ongoing commitment to a world-class education founded on and in the Word of God.

This world is our temporary home. Thanks to the miracle of Christmas, God’s Son came into the world that we might know the Father, and that we might be reconciled to a Holy God through Christ’s humility as a willing sacrifice on the cross for our shortcomings and failures to live up to the perfect law of God. He came to accomplish what we could not. His gift to us is reconciliation with our Heavenly Father as we accept Him and surrender to His lordship. He is our hope in life and death.

Thank you for your partnership with your son’s or daughter’s teachers and school leaders as we navigated the everchanging world of COVID and the adjustments as we seek to resume the ‘new normal’ living at home, work and school. We continue to pray for health and safety and greater opportunities to return fully to school in the new year.

May we each know the full meaning of Christmas as we celebrate this year!

Our Heavenly Father has been gracious to our community. We pray for His continued mercy and grace as we celebrate the birth of His Son, Jesus, this Christmas. Pray your time with family and friends, giving and exchanging gifts, and serving others, will be joyful.

Have a Merry Christmas, Gregg Thompson Head of School SPH Lippo Village

I realize many will miss cherished loved ones for the first time this Christmas;

NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS

Grade 1, 6, 7 Mission Service Learning

Christmas is the Time to Serve "...just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mat. 20:28)

The true meaning of Christmas is about serving, giving, and sharing, as our Lord Jesus Christ came not to be served but to serve (Mat. 20:28). SPH LV students engaged in different Mission Service Learning (MSL) activities or trips during this Christmas season. Grade 1 students had their MSL by preparing gifts and creating their own Christmas cards for preschoolers in PAUD Jasmine, Tangerang. On the other hand, Grade 6 & 7 students went to visit elderly nursing homes. Grade 6 students visited Kasih Ayah Bunda elderly nursing home, while Grade 7 visited Kemah Beth Shalom. Grade 6 & 7 students blessed the residents by doing a music performance and singing Christmas carols. The parents also graciously donated several items. Grade 7 students made individualized Christmas cards for each respective elder.

NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS

MSL is an integral part of our curriculum, as it instills an attitude of service to others. Our commitment is to teach servant leadership qualities to our students, so they may follow the example of Jesus Christ. It is a great blessing to see how our students from Junior to Senior Schools shared the joy of Christmas through this year's MSL!

Dear teachers, thank you! Teachers Appreciation Day by PAG About 2 weeks ago, the PAG continued the yearly tradition where we are all reminded of the work of the teachers. Every year during Thanksgiving Day, a group of amazing moms from the PAG gets together to whip out heartfelt appreciation in the most creative way. This year, a THANK YOU board was put up for everyone to give a shoutout to the teachers. They also distributed special lunchboxes to all the teachers on campus. Dear teachers, thank you for playing a part in building the foundation of our children. Your hard work and endless dedication in this trying time have shown the strength of your character and love for the work you do in blessing our children. Thank you for being the best teacher you can be!

Congrats! Mooted to Victory Students Achievements in the 14th UPH High School Moot Court Competition This year, three students from SPH Lippo Village from Grade 10-11 joined the virtual 14th Universitas Pelita Harapan High School Moot Court Competition. They are Artha Kendro (Gr.10), Gwen V. Zhang (Gr.11), and Audrey Kristiali (Gr.10).

For many years, our students have participated in this competition and brought home impressive achievements. In this year’s UPH Moot Court, the team received a couple of awards, both for the team and individually. The 2nd Best Memorial Award was given to the team, and the Top 5 Best Oralist Award was given to Gwen (Gr.11).

UPH Moot Court is a rigorous court simulation organized by the UPH Law Faculty. The competition is entirely judged by law professors, corporate lawyers, and arbitrators from the most prestigious law firms in both Indonesia and Singapore. This year, the topic at hand is related to foreign investment and international law. All participants had to act as lawyers by arguing on behalf of both the Claimant and the Respondent on whether a breach of contract had been caused.

This competition has allowed participants to not only learn about international law and how foreign investments truly work but has also allowed them to be challenged by professional lawyers and law professors who have real experience in a court of law.

FROM THE STUDENTS

Student Science Initiative Stepping into the world of science The Student Science Initiative (SSI) is a studentled organization that was created to form a new platform for students to explore and share their scientific findings. Students experience real-life like research methods and thereafter post their research articles that are available publicly. SSI has published their articles on their own website and magazine, where contents are contributed by some of those with a passion for science. You can find a range of topics from technological advancements in genetic modification to interesting facts regarding COVID-19 herd immunity. The SSI is continuously on the lookout for an expansive range of findings, so if you’re keen to join the ride, contact the SSI!

Seeing SSI’s leaders and members, I see potential, passion, and excitement. I see leaders of the start of our scienceempowering influence in SPH and all the other youth communities around us. We believe in a community where more youths are bearing the torch of scientific pride.

Congrats! Carys Mihardja (Gr. 12), Winner of the Diana Legacy Award 2021

"I am blessed to be able to share this cause on the global stage. It's easy to look at it on a wider scale, but it actually can be traced back to what I learned in the classrooms.

Carys Cares is a Down syndrome campaign that was set up to raise awareness of Down syndrome stigma. Those who suffer from this condition should not be cast out by society, but instead, be empowered and understood as they also play an important role in society. That is the view of Carys Mihardja, our Grade 12 student who is also the founder of Carys Cares.

Having been at SPH since 2007, I have gained various experiences that opened my eyes to civic responsibility, where that framework birthed Carys Cares."

Carys Cares is a platform that allows the expression of creative arts by down syndrome patients, where every piece of art speaks of their unique stories. Carys Cares has brought recognition up to where Carys herself was selected as one of the winners in the Diana Legacy Award, a UK-based charity initiative that honors the work of young people who strive to improve the lives of others.
