Diamond Spirit Award Design Excellence: Best Casual Space
When you‘re an interior designer in Wilmington, North Carolina, you‘re right next to the ocean—so you‘d better be ready to create a lot of coastal rooms. Fortunately, Ethan Allen designer Jeanne Gillespie speaks that design language fluently. “I‘ll do coastal any day of the week,” she says.
She was the perfect person to help two clients who came into the Design Center wanting to reclaim an investment property and make it their primary vacation home. “They wanted to entertain, to have company that visits—but they also wanted a quiet place to sit and read,” Jeanne recalls.
The client had fallen in love with the Quinlan Ghanzi wool rug, made by artisans on the other side of the world—which also contained within its yarns the perfect North Carolina coastal palette. Jeanne chose furniture that felt both
beautiful and touchable, clothing classic upholstery profiles in durable fabrics and selecting lighter, more organic-feeling wood finishes. Ceramic garden seats brought in a unique textural moment.
The result was a living room that was soothing and calm— ready for relaxed living. “They‘ll be happy when they come into that room for years,” Jeanne notes, “and that longevity is what we‘re going for.”
