As we have already commented in previous editorials this year, the appearance of Covid-19 led to the automatic cancellation of many wine fairs and events that are the lifeblood of the sales and marketing activity in our sector. Then, with the subsequent closure of bars, restaurants and hotels, the sale and consumption of wine slowed to almost a trickle and, for several months now, the wineries, distributors and wine stores have been sitting on stock that has hardly budged.

Some have been saved from disaster by the fact that their sales are almost entirely to export markets, where things have not been as bad as in Spain.

En el sector del vino, como ya hemos venido comentando en las diferentes editoriales de los números anteriores, la aparición del Covid-19 supuso, de salida, la anulación de multitud de ferias y eventos, que son el escaparate y centro de negocios del sector.

Posteriormente, con el cierre de bares, restaurantes y hoteles, la venta y consumo de vino se frenó prácticamente en seco, y durante varios meses las bodegas, distribuidores y tiendas tuvieron sus stocks prácticamente sin movimiento.

Del desastre se salvaron algunos por el hecho de que sus ventas son dirigidas casi en su totalidad a la exportación, y aún así, quien más quién menos ha tenido dificultades.

Selectus Wines and other publishers in the sector have also felt the impact of all this, as the wineries have pulled back their investments in advertising and sponsorships.

But if everything we are being told is true, it seems that we will gradually be able to regain a semblance of normality with everything progressively returning to where we were before this pandemic started. It will be a slow, perhaps very slow, process but we will get there. There is now light at the end of the tunnel...

And that is why we can, with cautious optimism, wish you a Happy New Year!

Y de rebote, también las revistas del sector, hemos sufrido las consecuencias, ya que las inversiones de las bodegas en publicidad y colaboraciones, se han visto resentidas y, como consecuencia, también hemos estado afectados.

Pero si todo lo que nos explican es cierto, parece que poco a poco podremos recuperar una cierta normalidad, y que todo irá volviendo al punto en el que nos encontrábamos antes de esta pandemia. Será lento, quizás muy lento, pero llegaremos. Ya vemos la luz al final del túnel…

Y es por ello que les deseamos un muy feliz 2021 y, cómo no, relájense y disfruten de esta nueva edición de Selectus Wines. ¡SALUD!

The opposite of everyday is expressed by the unique...and, in alluding to ‘the unique’, I am transported to the cold, damp region of Champagne.

Grey skies but bottles full of light, white soils and magical countryside.

The history of the region is long. From the establishment of the first still wine House (Gosset, 1584) to the first producer of sparkling wines (Ruinart, 1729), much has changed in the almost half-millennium. A progression which reached its zenith when winemakers developed the art of secondary fermentation... a lesson learned through the generations who dedicated their lives to building up knowledge, leaving a legacy for the generations to come.

This constant looking to the future, particularly during the last 20 years, has seen the rise of small producers. Leaders with a distinctive vision, a daunting concept of Champagne which is full of intangibles, where the beauty of perfect imperfection is frequently synonymous with the most absolute singularity.

Thierry Laherte is to be found in the Vallée de la Marne. Instead of adopting the classic blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, he has boldly chosen to use the seven permitted Champagne grape varieties. All the fruit comes from a vineyard called ‘Les Clos’. With this fruit he has created his Cuvée ‘Les 7’, an impeccable blend, which only a few artists in the world are capable of achieving. In addition, Laherte uses a significant proportion of reserve wines and a solera system to create the perfect balance between the oxidative style and freshness. Looking to the past with the intention of reproducing the taste of Champagne from 250 years ago, he has recreated a wine from that time. The taste of memory, the flavours of culture... change to ensure nothing changes. To go back is to be in the vanguard. This is a legacy in liquid form so that we never forget the magical work of our forefathers. To see things in a different and personal way is to transform reality.

This is why some things are considered petty, insignificant and without importance while other people discover in them a treasure greater than El Dorado. Quantum theory holds that an object will be influenced by the fact of being observed, this is known as the observer effect. All this leads to the value of human appreciation, to the conflict in which reality is suddenly different for every person: no-one sees things in the way that others do, because they interpret them in their own way. This is why it would be absurd to talk about the tedium of everyday life as something absolute, as if the situation did not sometimes possess the special intensity of the usual.

EL VINO DE GUILLERMO CRUZ

No existe nada en este mundo que no esté

mediado por la mirada que cada uno, personalmente, impregna sobre un determinado objeto, acontecimiento o circunstancia. Es por eso que lo que para algunos puede ser nimio, insignificante o sin importancia, para otros puede descubrirse como un tesoro más grande que El Dorado. La propia teoría cuántica sostiene que el observador de un hecho influye en la manera en que ese hecho es percibido. Todo ello desemboca en el valor de las apreciaciones humanas, en el conflicto de que la realidad es súbitamente diferente para cada persona en particular: nadie ve las cosas exactamente igual que otra persona, porque las infiere para sí de distinto modo. Es por eso que sería absurdo de hablar del tedio de la cotidianeidad como algo absoluto; como si esta situación no se revistiese, en ocasiones, de la particular intensidad que sólo tiene lo común.

Sea pues, que lo opuesto a la cotidianeidad, sea la singularidad de lo único… y citando a “lo único”, hace que mis recuerdos se transporten a la fría y húmeda región de Champagne. De cielo gris y de botellas repletas de luz, de suelos blancos y mágicos paisajes. Larga es la historia de la zona. Desde el nacimiento de la primera casa de vinos tranquilos (Gosset, 1584), a la primera casa de vinos espumosos (Ruinart, 1729), mucho se ha evolucionado en este casi medio milenio. Una progresión que alcanza un cénit, hasta el punto de convertirse en artesanos de ese arte que es la segunda fermentación... lección aprendida tras generaciones que dedicaron su vida a atesorar conocimiento, dejándolo como legado a las generaciones futuras.

En esta constante mirada al futuro y durante los últimos 20 años, hemos sido testigos del florecer de pequeños productores. Protagonistas de una visión distinta, una versión de Champagne abrumadora, cargada de intangibles, donde la belleza de la perfecta imperfección es, en muchas ocasiones, sinónimo de la singularidad más absoluta.

Thierry Laherte está situado en el Valle de la Marne.

Lejos de realizar el coupage clásico entre Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier y Chardonnay, se aventura a utilizar las 7 uvas permitidas en Champagne. Todas procedentes de un viñedo llamado ¨Les Clos¨, que le permite crear su Cuvée “Les 7” en un ensamblaje impecable, al alcance de muy pocos artistas en el mundo. Laherte además usa un importante porcentaje de vinos de reserva, utilizando el método de solera, para conseguir el perfecto equilibrio entre el estilo oxidativo y la precisión. Retroceder en el tiempo, en un intento de hacernos rememorar el sabor de los Champagnes elaborados hace 250 años, a partir de la recreación de una viña de aquella época. El gusto de la memoria, sabores de cultura… cambiar para que nada cambie.

Volver atrás como sinónimo de vanguardia. Un legado en versión líquida para que nunca se borre de nuestro recuerdo la magia de nuestros antepasados. Mirar con una visión diferente y personal para transformar la realidad.

GIVING PURITY A NAME OF ITS OWN Lalomba was born of a vision, a vision to produce wines of the greatest authenticity reflecting the characteristics of their different vineyards of origin with absolute honesty. It is the affirmation of the purity of the vineyards. Lalomba is the new “single-vineyard” producer through which Ramón Bilbao presents its most exclusive collection of wines.

Lalomba is a collection of three wines from three very unique vineyards: Finca Valhonta on the terraces of Villalba de Rioja (Rioja Alta); and Finca Ladero and Finca Lalinde on the austere slopes of the Sierra de Yerga (Rioja Oriental).

Located in Haro (La Rioja), the winery is a shiny new, custom-built facility. Situated adjacent to the parent Ramón Bilbao winery, it has its own personality and own independent team.

LALOMBA DAR NOMBRE PROPIO A LA PUREZA El lanzamiento de Lalomba surge de una visión. Elaborar vinos de la máxima autenticidad, que reflejen con toda honestidad las virtudes vitícolas de sus diferentes orígenes. Es la reivindicación de la pureza del viñedo. La nueva bodega de vinos de Finca con la que Ramón Bilbao presenta su colección de vinos más exclusiva.

Lalomba nace para expresar con la máxima autenticidad el carácter único de los viñedos más carismáticos de Ramón Bilbao. Se trata de una colección de tres vinos procedentes de tres viñas de gran singularidad: Finca Valhonta en las terrazas de Villalba de Rioja (Rioja Alta); Finca Ladero y Finca Lalinde en las austeras laderas de la Sierra de Yerga (Rioja Oriental).

Situada en Haro (La Rioja), la bodega es una nueva instalación creada a medida. Ubicada junto a Ramón Bilbao (la casa madre), marca su propia personalidad y tiene un equipo propio e independiente.

A unique wine heritage

Un patrimonio vinícola único

The wines come from three extraordinary landscapes where the growing conditions are excellent. The soils and microclimates, the traditional, sustainable viticulture of high value and high quality, the amazing landscape and an ideal altitude for the cultivation of the vine... all these elements have been brought together to craft exceptionally high-quality wines with the perfect expression of the terroir from which they hail. It was clear that such unique wines needed a unique identity.

Son tres paisajes privilegiados con unas condiciones extraordinarias. Sus suelos y microclimas, viticultura tradicional y sostenible de gran valor y calidad, el paisaje excepcional y una altura ideal para el cultivo de los viñedos… todo este patrimonio ha quedado dispuesto para que acaben elaborándose unos vinos de excepcional calidad y expresión máxima del terruño en el que están ubicados. La decisión estaba tomada: se tenía que dar identidad propia a unos vinos únicos.

FINCA LALINDE Fina Lalinde is a 5.4-hectare property located on the hillsides of the Sierra de Yerga, where the Garnacha and Viura vines grow on the gentle slopes. Aerated by the west wind, the cold north wind (the “Cierzo”) and the stone-covered limestone, these varietals have great potential for producing an expression that includes an impression of minerality.

The bush-trained vines were planted, spaced out over 1.50 x 1.70 metres, back in 1976. After 4 decades, they have adapted to the area' s soil and climate perfectly.

FINCA LALINDE Finca de 5,4 ha. situadas en las laderas de la Sierra de Yerga, con pendientes suaves en la que encontraremos viñedos de las variedades garnacha y viura. Aireadas por el viento proveniente del oeste, el cierzo y los suelos calizos, con cobertura pedregosa, hacen que estas variedades tengan un gran potencial de expresión, con una sensación de mineralidad.

Las cepas fueron plantadas en el año 1976, con marco de plantación en vaso de 1,50 x 1,70 metros.

Después de 4 décadas, estas vides están perfectamente adaptadas al terreno y al clima de la zona.

FINCA VALHONTA This captivating and harmonious vineyard is located on the southern slopes of the Obarenes mountains, at the western end of the Rioja Alta, where the climate is a mixture of Mediterranean, Continental and Atlantic.

This unusual climate, together with the 650-metre altitude at which the bush-trained Tempranillo vines grow, heavily influences the character of this singlevineyard wine.

FINCA VALHONTA En el extremo occidental de la Rioja Alta, concretamente en la vertiente sur de los montes Obarenes, encontraremos esta viña llena de armonía y encanto, influenciada por los climas mediterráneo, continental y atlántico. Estas condiciones climáticas, junto con la altura en la que se encuentra el viñedo (650 metros sobre el nivel del mar), son fundamentales para marcar el carácter del vino que saldrá de esta finca, elaborado con la variedad tempranillo y cuyas cepas están plantadas en vaso.

FINCA LADERO Finca Ladero has 6 hectares of vineyards planted on the Sierra de Yerga Fault at an altitude of 720 metres.

Lying alongside the Yerga forests, bathed in luminous light and offering an idyllic view over the Ebro Valley, the location of the vineyards is outstanding.

The vines grow in limestone substrate soils that contain a huge diversity of microbial life. They are trained low to protect them from the strong north wind that blows through the area. Here, the Tempranillo and Garnacha varietals grow under the influence of the Mediterranean aridity, the Atlantic air and the humidity and freshness created by the altitude.

FINCA LADERO Sobre la falta de la Sierra de Yerga, se extienden las 6 ha. de viñedos, plantados a 720 metros de altura, que junto a la cercanía a los bosques de Yerga, y la luminosidad que tienen las plantaciones, hacen de este paraje un lugar excepcional, con una panorámica idílica sobre el valle del Ebro. Sus suelos de sustrato calizo, y la equilibrada microbiota definen un viñedo agreste.

Los viñedos están plantados en espalderas bajas, para protegerlos del potente cierzo que sopla en estos lares. Aquí encontraremos las variedades tempranillo y garnacha, influenciadas ambas por la aridez mediterránea, el aire atlántico y la humedad y frescura que proporciona la altitud.

Investigación e innovación como fuentes del conocimiento Pero para expresar ese carácter propio de estos viñedos se tiene que sumar el conocimiento de las características de los viñedos y su potencial.

Cuenta con medios técnicos adecuados para alcanzar la perfecta definición del carácter del viñedo, las variedades y la añada. Destacan los depósitos de hormigón crudo, sin revestimiento. Fabricados en la región del Véneto, en Italia, tienen una forma única, de diseño exclusivo para Lalomba. La fermentación en estos depósitos permite expresar toda la identidad del terroir.

El hormigón se complementa con una exigente selección de barricas de roble quercus petraea de origen húngaro y francés, que aporta una alta complejidad y longevidad a los vinos de Lalomba.

Building knowledge through research and innovation If you are going to draw out the unique character of these vineyards, a comprehensive knowledge of their characteristics and potential is essential.

Fortunately, the winery has the technical resources to achieve the perfect definition of the character of the vineyards, the varietals and the vintages. Its uncoated raw concrete tanks are particularly interesting.

Manufactured in the Veneto region of Italy, their unique shape is a bespoke design for Lalomba. Fermenting the wine in these tanks allows Lalomba to draw out the distinctive character of the terroir.

The concrete is complemented by a rigorous selection of Hungarian and French quercus petraea oak barrels and this combination endows the Lalomba wines with complexity and potential longevity.

Another differentiating factor in the production process is the fact that, after malolactic fermentation and barrel ageing, the wines are returned to these innovative concrete tanks to complete their ageing and refinement.

A project, emotion, people Behind this exciting venture are two people: Rosana Lisa and Alberto Sardón. Rosana is the technical director.

Passionate about the countryside, Rosana is obsessed with capturing each landscape in each of the 3 Lalomba wines. Alberto is the project manager. We have known each other for some time and I know that he has been devoting all his time and energy to his wine for many years now, subscribing to the belief that "the reward for giving your best is the great professional and personal satisfaction of doing what you love".

They both agree that "the best wine is yet to come" and, with that in mind, they work hard each day to ensure that all the processes, from the vineyard to the glass, are performed with professionalism, sensitivity and emotion.

Otro aspecto diferencial es que, tras la fermentación maloláctica y la crianza en barrica, los vinos vuelven a los innovadores depósitos de hormigón. Aquí completan su proceso de afinamiento y distinción.

Un proyecto, emoción, personas Dos personas son las responsables de este emocionante proyecto: Rosana Lisa y Alberto Sardón. Rosana es la Directora técnica, apasionada del campo, meticulosa y obsesionada por captar cada paisaje en cada uno de los 3 vinos de Lalomba. Alberto es el Director del proyecto.

Desde hace mucho tiempo (nos conocemos desde hace unos cuantos años), dedica tiempo y alma al mundo del vino, fiel a la idea de que “la recompensa de dar lo mejor de uno mismo es sentir la satisfacción profesional y vital de hacer aquello que te apasiona”.

Ambos comparten la idea de que “el mejor vino está siempre por hacer” y con esa filosofía trabajan en el día a día para que todos los procesos, desde el campo hasta la copa, se realicen con profesionalidad, con sentimiento, con emoción.

The first wine produced by Lalomba is a 90% Grenache and 10% Viura rosé. Deep and tasty with an enveloping finesse, its floral personality evokes the land of its birth, the gentle hillsides framed by the rugged Yerga mountains.

El primer vino que elaboró Lalomba es un rosado compuesto en un 90% de garnacha y un 10% de viura. Profundo, sabroso y de una finura envolvente, su personalidad floral traslada a su entorno de origen, las suaves laderas enmarcadas por el ambiente agreste de Yerga.

The expression of the Tempranillo grown on the wide claylimestone terraces at the foot of the Obarenes mountains is one of perfect harmony. Finca Valhonta was born in the cold, rugged mountainous heights, surrounded by forest, in a healthy natural environment in which three different climates meet: Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental combine to create a world of fascinating finesse.

La expresión de la variedad tempranillo logra una de sus más altas cotas de armonía y encanto en las anchas terrazas arcillo-calcáreas al pie de los montes Obarenes.

DIARIO DE UN SOMMELIER. GARNACHA

GARNACHA We continue our journey around the world via its different grape varieties.

Today it is one of my favourites, the Garnacha.

When wine people talk about “old world” and “new world” countries, they are referring to those countries who were pioneers in the cultivation of the vine and, consequently, in winemaking, versus those who introduced the model without having any previous wine culture or heritage.

I would venture to say that the Garnacha perfectly fits the description of an old world variety as it is found in all three countries of the Mediterranean basin: France, Italy and Spain. It is an important grape from the Southern Rhône region through to Catalonia, Aragon, La Rioja and extending to Murcia in the Levante region. In Sardinia, it is known as Cannonau, and in Mallorca, Manto Negro.

Its origin is unclear. Many believe it to be Aragon, but it is also said that it was born in the town of Vernazza in Italy’s Liguria. There is similar debate about how it arrived in Sardinia; it was either the Catalans who took it there, or the Catalans who took it from there to plant in Catalonia. Whatever the case, it is a varietal of Mediterranean origin, there's no mistake about that!

This chameleon-like grape variety comes in several types: Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Gris, Garnacha Tintorera and even Garnacha Peluda. All types of wines are created from its fruit: white, rosé, red, sweet, sparkling and fortified wines. It resists high temperatures and adapts itself to any kind of soil. If you want to understand the potential and, above all, get to know it in its many different manifestations, a good approach would be to taste Garnachas planted in different regions and soils.

Seguimos nuestro viaje por el mundo a través de los distintos tipos de uva. Hoy, una de mis favoritas, la garnacha.

Cuando en el mundo del vino se habla de países de viejo mundo y de nuevo mundo se refiere a los que fueron pioneros en el cultivo de la vid y, por consecuencia, en la elaboración versus a los que implantaron el modelo sin tener cultura ni patrimonio sobre el tema.

Me atrevo a decir que la garnacha define perfectamente la descripción de variedad de viejo mundo ya que se encuentra en los tres países del arco mediterráneo: Francia, Italia y España. Es protagonista desde la zona del Rhône meridional pasando por Catalunya, Aragón, La Rioja y extendiéndose hasta Murcia por Levante. En Cerdeña la llaman Cannonau, y en Mallorca, Manto Negro.

Su origen es incierto. Muchos la sitúan en Aragón pero también se dice que nació en una localidad de la Liguria italiana llamada Vernazza. Pasa algo parecido en cómo llegó a Cerdeña, se discute entre sí fueron los Catalanes quienes la llevaron o, si estos, la cogieron para plantar en Catalunya. Fuese como fuese y como siempre pasa en estos temas en cuestión, hablando de variedad mediterránea no nos vamos a equivocar sobre su origen.

A esta camaleónica uva se la conoce como: garnacha tinta, garnacha blanca, garnacha gris, garnacha tintorera, e incluso garnacha peluda. De sus frutos nacen vinos de todo tipo: blancos, rosados, tintos, dulces, espumosos y generosos. Resiste perfectamente las altas temperaturas y se adapta a topo tipo de suelos. Un buen ejercicio es catar distintas garnachas plantadas en distintas zonas y suelos para entender el potencial y, sobretodo, ver sus distintas versiones.

Here the queen is the Tempranillo grape but, each year, the Garnacha is increasingly stealing the limelight. The Contino Garnacha is a fresh, long and persistent wine.

En Laserna, en pleno corazón de la Rioja Alavesa, encontramos bodegas Contino. Un proyecto al estilo de un Château francés que nació a principios de los años setenta.

Aquí la reina es la tempranillo pero, año tras año, la garnacha va cogiendo protagonismo. El Contino garnacha es un vino fresco, largo y con recorrido.

Dehesa de los Canónigos recibe un reconocimiento al trabajo bien hecho

This year, despite a global pandemic, Dehesa de los Canónigos has something to celebrate: Decanter magazine has awarded its Luis Sanz Busto Gran Reserva 2010 “97 points”.

Este año, a pesar de las circunstancias que han concurrido a nivel global, en Dehesa de los Canónigos están muy contentos por el reconocimiento recibido por la revista Decanter que les ha otorgado 97 puntos a su vino Luis Sanz Busto Gran Reserva 2010.

This wine is a tribute to the father of the family who owns this winery located in Ribera del Duero and is only produced in exceptional years (the last was 2001). It is crafted from grapes grown in an 80-year-old vineyard.

Today, Luis Sanz’ sons Iván and Beln are at the winery’s helm. Iván handles the sales side and Belén attends to the work in the vineyards and winery. They took over a few years ago and the winery is now one of the Ribera del Duero’s top wineries.

As Ivan told us, “it is a recognition of which we are proud, but we are keeping our feet on the ground and have to continue working each day”.

An exceptional wine from an exceptional family.

Es un vino que es homenaje al padre de la familia propietaria de esta bodega, sita en la Ribera del Duero, y que sólo se produce en añadas excepcionales (la última fue en el 2001) y que se elabora con uvas procedentes de un viñedo de 80 años.

Actualmente, los hijos de D. Luis Sanz, Iván y Belén, son los que están al frente de la bodega. Iván en la parte comercial y Belén en el trabajo de campo y bodega.

Tomaron el relevo hace unos años y la bodega la han vuelto a situar entre las TOP de la Ribera de Duero.

Según nos comentó Iván, “es un reconocimiento que nos enorgullece, pero tocamos con los pies en el suelo y hemos de seguir trabajando día a día”.

Un vino excepcional proveniente de una familia excepcional.

This small Penedès winery was founded in 1963 by the Cantabria-born Jean Leon (whose original name was Ceferino Carrión). Jean Leon was a visionary who turned his two great dreams into reality: to open the fanciest restaurant in Hollywood and to produce an exclusive wine that would delight his select clientele.

The winery, owned by Familia Torres since 1994 and, since 2010, run by Mireia Torres, was the first in Spain to produce a single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon wine and the first in Penedèsto obtain the “Vi de Finca” distinction, the highest awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which it received for four of its wines.

With 65 hectares of fully-owned vineyards, all its wines have been certified organic since the 2012 vintage and are exported to more than 40 countries.

JEAN LEON A big personality who showed strength in the face of challenges and hardships, Ceferino Carrión emigrated to the United States in 1949 in search of new opportunities.

After passing through New York, he moved to California and began working at the Villa Capri restaurant, owned

by Frank Sinatra, where he became friends with the celebrities and personalities of the day. As a result of those contacts, and with the help of James Dean, he made the first of his dreams come true: to open a restaurant in Hollywood, which was named La Scala. The year was 1956, and for almost two decades, it was the centre of the “star system” in and around Hollywood.

Marylin Monroe, JFK and Paul Newman were some of the stars who dined at Jean Leon’s restaurant. It was an era marked by the “American Way of Life,” when anything was possible. But Ceferino wanted more… and set the wheels in motion to fulfil the second of his dreams: to produce a wine with his own label for the clientele at his restaurant to enjoy.

Fundada en 1963 por el cántabro Jean Leon (su nombre original era Ceferino Carrión), es una pequeña bodega del Penedès. Jean Leon fue un visionario que materializó sus dos grandes sueños: abrir el restaurante más lujoso de Hollywood y elaborar un vino exclusivo para deleitar a su selecta clientela.

La bodega, propiedad de Familia Torres desde 1994 y dirigida desde 2010 por Mireia Torres, fue la primera en elaborar un vino monovarietal de Cabernet Sauvignon en España y en obtener el reconocimiento de ‘Vi de Finca’ en el Penedèspara cuatro de sus vinos, la máxima distinción que otorga la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Con 65 hectáreas de viñedo en propiedad, todos sus vinos están certificados como orgánicos desde la añada 2012 y se exportan a más de 40 países.

Tras su paso por Nueva York, llegó a California donde empezó trabajando en el restaurante Villa Capri, propiedad de Frank Sinatra, y donde hizo amistad con famosos y personalidades del momento. Fruto de estos contactos, y con la ayuda de James Dean, hizo realidad el primero de sus sueños: abrir un restaurante en Hollywood, al que pusieron de nombre La Scala. Fue en 1956 y durante prácticamente dos décadas fue el centro neurálgico del “Star system” de Hollywood y alrededores.

Marylin Monroe, JFK o Paul Newman, entre otros, fueron algunas de las estrellas que pasaron por el restaurante de Jean Leon. En aquella época, la del American Way of Life, todo era posible. Pero Ceferino quería más… y puso en marcha los mecanismos para cumplir el segundo de sus sueños: elaborar un vino con su nombre para que lo disfrutasen los clientes de su restaurante.

He began to travel the world and at one point (around 1963) visited the Penedèsarea, where he believed that his project could be successful. He purchased 150 hectares of land and planted vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay, much to the surprise of the local winegrowers. In 1969, the first harvest took place at Jean Leon, resulting in the production of the first wine from these vineyards, made from the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal, destined entirely for his Beverly Hills restaurant.

Empezó a viajar por el mundo y, en un momento dado (sobre el 1963), apareció en la zona del Penedés, donde creyó que su proyecto podría llevarse a cabo. Compró 150 hectáreas de terreno, donde plantó viñedos de Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc y Chardonnay, ante la sorpresa de los viticultores locales. En 1969 se produce la primera vendimia en Jean Leon que dio lugar al primer vino procedente de estos viñedos de la variedad Cabernet Sauvignon, destinado íntegramente al restaurante que tenía en Beverly Hills.

He was so immersed in the Hollywood jet set that, as a result of his friendship with Ronald Reagan, his Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva 1975 and Jean Leon Vinya Gigi Chardonnay 1980 wines were served at the U.S. president’s inaugural dinner.

Tal era su inmersión entre la jet set de Hollywood que, fruto de su amistad con Ronald Reagan, consiguió que sus vinos Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva 1975 y Jean Leon Vinya Gigi Chardonnay 1980 fueran los elegidos para la cena oficial de investidura del que sería Presidente de los U.S.A.

After being diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in 1994, Jean Leon decided to leave his legacy to the Familia Torres so that his wines would continue to be made with the same method and the same personality with which he had produced them.

He passed away on 6 October 1996, leaving behind an important legacy for future generations and a fascinating story of a self-made man.

Jaume Rovira also played an important role in the

evolution of Jean Leon.

In 1969, he joined the winery, at almost the same time that it opened. He is Jean Leon’s historic oenologist, as up until his retirement (2006), he was in charge of the winery’s winegrowing and winemaking activity. His knowledge and experience led to the launch of new wines and the perfection of existing ones.

In 2004, Xavier Rubires joined the winemaking team. He has been another key figure in this winery’s development until today.

In 2010, Mireia Torres Maczassek, an oenologist and fifth-generation member of the Torres family, joined the company to take charge of the winery, which she continues to run today. And in 2017, Roser Catasús became a part of the Jean Leon team and is currently an oenologist at the winery.

All of the members of the Jean Leon team have a clear understanding of the way the winery works: the aim is for the wines to be an expression of the terroir and a reflection of the vineyards where they are grown, with small, carefully-crafted productions.

Organic growing was adopted in 2008, and since the 2012 vintage, all Jean Leon wines have been certified accordingly.

A Jean Leon le diagnosticaron un cáncer de laringe en 1994 y decidió dejar su legado a Familia Torres, con la voluntad de seguir elaborando los vinos de la misma forma y con la misma personalidad con la que él los había producido hasta entonces.

Falleció el 6 de octubre de 1996 dejando para las generaciones posteriores un importante legado y una historia interesante de un hombre hecho a sí mismo.

Jaume Rovira es otra pieza importante de la evolución de Jean Leon. En 1969 se incorporó a la bodega, casi al mismo tiempo de su inauguración. Es el histórico enólogo de Jean Leon, ya que hasta el momento de su jubilación (2006) fue el responsable de la bodega en el aspecto vitivinícola. Sus conocimientos y experiencia han sido fundamentales en la aparición de nuevos vinos y en la perfección de los existentes.

En el 2004 se incorporó al equipo de enología Xavier Rubires. Es otra de las personas de referencia en la evolución de esta bodega hasta nuestros días.

En 2010 se incorpora Mireia Torres Maczassek, enóloga y 5ª generación de Familia Torres, para ponerse al frente de la bodega, que sigue dirigiendo en la actualidad. Y en 2017 se une al equipo de Jean Leon Roser Catasús, actual enóloga de la bodega.

Todos ellos, desde el primer al último componente de Jean Leon tienen clara la forma de trabajar de la bodega: se prioriza que los vinos sean expresivos del terroir y el reflejo de las viñas propias de las que nacen para elaborar pequeñas producciones muy cuidadas.

Desde 2008 se implementó la agricultura ecológica, y desde la añada 2012 todos los vinos de Jean Leon tienen la certificación correspondiente.

We could group Jean Leon’s wines into three categories: the Gama 3055 range, a tribute to the adventurous spirit of the winery’s founder; the experimental wines, which are small productions of a single vintage, and the “Vins de Finca,” which is the highest recognition for a wine in Catalonia.

Podríamos “clasificar” los vinos de Jean Leon en tres categorías: la Gama 3055, que rinde homenaje al espíritu aventurero del fundador de la bodega; los vinos experimentales, pequeñas producciones de una sola añada y los ‘Vins de Finca’, que es el máximo reconocimiento al que puede optar un vino en Cataluña.

The latter, the perfect expression of the place where they are made, are the winery’s top wines. Reflecting Jean Leon’s legacy, they are made from the French varietals that he planted himself in the mid-’60s (except for Merlot, which he planted in the early ’90s). Jean Leon obtained this certification for four of its wines in 2013 and was the first Penedès winery to receive it.

Estos últimos reflejan la máxima expresión del lugar en el que se elaboran y son los TOP de la bodega. Todos ellos recogen el legado de Jean Leon y están elaborados con variedades francesas que él mismo plantó a mediados de los años 60 (excepto la Merlot, que plantó a principios de los 90). Jean Leon obtuvo esta certificación en cuatro de sus vinos en el año 2013, siendo la primera bodega del Penedès en obtener esta certificación.

Jean Leon Vinya Gigi Chardonnay Made entirely from the Chardonnay varietal, it hails from a small, unique vineyard of five hectares planted in 1967 and named by Jean Leon after his daughter. Very intense on the nose, this wine is fresh and persistent on the palate and has good acidity.

Jean Leon Vinya Gigi Chardonnay Elaborado íntegramente con la variedad Chardonnay. Procede de un pequeño y singular viñedo de 5ha. plantado en 1967 y al que Jean Leon bautizó con el nombre de su hija. Es un vino muy intenso en nariz, que en boca se presenta fresco, persistente y con buena acidez.

Jean Leon Vinya Le Havre Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Jean Leon also named this wine. When he emigrated to the United States, his point of departure was the French port of Le Havre, hence the name.

It is a typical Bordeaux blend (85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc). Elegant on the nose, it is powerful on entry to the palate with great length and a lingering, persistent finish.

Jean Leon Vinya Le Havre Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva El nombre de este vino viene dado también por Jean Leon.

Para emigrar a U.S.A. partió del puerto francés de Le Havre, y de ahí le viene el nombre. Un coupage típicamente bordelés (85% Cabernet Sauvignon y 15% Cabernet Franc). Elegante en nariz, potente entrada en boca con largo recorrido y final largo y persistente.

Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva And finally, the jewel in the crown. This wine is only made in years when the grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon) are exceptional. All the grapes come from an 8-hectare plot planted in 1963. Each year, the label is designed by a well-known artist.

With an intense and complex aroma, this wine has a good tannic structure and a long, persistent aftertaste.

La mayor parte de los europeos ven a Uruguay como un primo hermano de Argentina, patria de tangos y carne fina, de mate y hablar “yyadado”. Ponen en el mismo plano vinos uruguayos y argentinos. Nada más lejos de la realidad.

El vino argentino viene en su inmensa mayoría de Mendoza, región de gran altitud y poquísima lluvia, de clima continental andino y mucho sol. Agrupar Mendoza y Punta del Este es como poner juntos Cádiz y Basilea.

Uruguay es de hecho un país muy distinto.

Most Europeans see Uruguay as a first cousin of Argentina, the home of tangos, juicy steaks, matĂŠ and a sing-song accent. They view Uruguayan and Argentinean wines as being more or less the same thing. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Most Argentinean wine comes from Mendoza, a region situated at high altitude with very little rain, an Andean continental climate and plenty of sunshine. Putting Mendoza and Punta del Este together is like putting Cadiz and Basel together. Uruguay is, in fact, a very different country.

URUGUAY, PURE ATLANTIC WINES

What really sets Uruguay apart is its Atlantic climate, the softness of its terrain, its mild temperatures and its rain, lots of rain. It is not surprising that it was the favourite destination of many Basque emigrants, who found themself in the same drizzle as the one back home.

In fact, the father of Uruguayan viticulture is a Basque, but not a Spanish one, a French one, and his name was Pascual Harriague. From his small native region, he brought with him a desire to make wine and the queen of grapes, the Tannat, which many people in Uruguay still call by the name of its protector: Harriague.

Uruguay is an Atlantic country par excellence. Its low latitude, 35ºS, is more than offset by the humid climate and the wind that blows relentlessly over this flat country.

What the tilt of the Earth offers is cancelled out by the permanent cloud cover. Montevideo has more in common with Cambados in Galicia than with Salta in Argentina, and its wines prove it.

It is also a recent country in terms of fine wine production.

Until not so long ago, the Uruguayans drank whatever was available, including wines made from hybrid varietals and what they called, in total honesty, “common wine”.

The country’s large middle class (it is known as the Switzerland of South America) with its great interest in culture and its admiration of Europe, changed its drinking habits not many years ago, paving the way to fine wines, among the most outstanding of which are the Tannat reds. Uruguay is not a land of great meat and vast open prairies for nothing!

Lo que más caracteriza a Uruguay es su clima atlántico, la suavidad de su orografía y de sus temperaturas y la lluvia, mucha lluvia. No es de extrañar que fuera destino preferido de muchos emigrantes vascos, que seguro que en nada añoraron su sirimiri. De hecho, el padre de la viticultura uruguaya es un vasco, no español sino francés, Pascual Harriague. Él se trajo de su tierra natal las ganas de hacer vino y la uva reina de su tierra chica, la tannat, que todavía muchos llaman allí por el nombre de su protector, harriague.

Uruguay es el país atlántico por excelencia. Su escasa latitud, 35ºS, se ve más que compensada por el clima húmedo y el viento que atraviesa sin descanso este país plano. Lo que da la inclinación de la Tierra lo quitan las nubes permanentes. Más tiene en común Montevideo con Cambados que con Salta, y así lo demuestran sus vinos.

Es también país reciente en esto del vino fino, que hasta no hace mucho los uruguayos se bebían lo que hubiese, incluyendo vinos de variedades híbridas y lo que, con honestidad, llamaban vino común. La abundante clase media que tiene el país, llamado la Suiza del continente, la gran inquietud cultural y la mirada constante hacia Europa cambiaron no hace muchos años los hábitos de consumo, dando entrada a vinos más finos, entre los que destacan sobremanera los tintos de tannat. No en vano es Uruguay tierra de grandes carnes y extensas praderas.

Pero, atención, ¡que Uruguay dará que hablar con sus vinos blancos!

Although wine is produced all over the country, the vast majority of production is concentrated not far from Montevideo, where almost 60% of the Uruguayan population lives. The region is known as Canelones, but its inhabitants were originally from the Canary Islands.

Canaries in name and in origin! This region, along with Venezuela and Cuba, was therefore the favourite destination of many of these islanders.

Aunque se hace vino en todo el país, la inmensa mayoría de la producción se concentra no lejos de Montevideo, donde viven casi el 60% de los uruguayos. La región se llama Canelones, pero sus habitantes son canarios.

Canarios de nombre y canarios de origen, que fue esta región, junto a Venezuela y Cuba, el exilio esperanzado de muchísimos insulares.

It is the land of the Madiran Tannat from the French Basque Country. But the grape is also very native to Uruguay. In Madiran, Tannat became known as the black grape for the colour it gave its wines. Its tannins were so hard that they inspired, out of pure necessity, one of the most widely-used techniques in modern oenology today, micro-oxygenation. With this process, among others, winemakers can soften the rough character of the tannins, making them more pleasant for the less adventurous drinker.

In Canelones, the Tannat produces big yet smooth wines, often with an attractive hint of freshness. By tradition, or by emulation of its French origins, the best Tannat is aged in barrels, but one gets the impression that the Uruguayan Tannat is lovelier the purer it is.

Es la tierra de la tannat del Madiran del País Vasco francés. Y también es uva muy autóctona de Uruguay. En Madiran, tannat se hizo conocida como la uva negra, del color que dejaba en sus vinos. Sus taninos eran tan duros que estimularon, por pura necesidad, una de las técnicas más usadas en la enología moderna, la microoxigenación del vino en formación. Con este tratamiento se logra, entre otras cosas, dulcificar el carácter áspero de los taninos, hacerlos más simpáticos para el bebedor poco atrevido.

En Canelones, tannat da vinos completos pero redondos, a menudo con un punto de frescor atractivo. Por tradición, o por emulación de sus orígenes franceses, se envejecen los mejores tannat en barricas, pero a uno le da la impresión que la tannat uruguaya es más bella cuanto más pura.

There is a kind of magic osmosis between Madiran and Uruguay, which brings them closer together. The Uruguayans seem to want to be French, and they often strive to concentrate their wines, and the French take a sly look at the Uruguayan wines and make theirs rounder.

The backgrounds are very different, countries without a real winter can never produce angular wines and those with mountainous terrain can never produce fat wines, but the styles are empathetic.

I really like a Tannat from Viña Progreso, the Sueño de Elisa, the Natural from Viñedo de los Vientos, the Gran Reserva Constante from the Dardanelli Family, Varela Zarranz and Domaine Castelar from Juanicó.

We have talked about Basques and Canary Islanders, but of course, there are also Galicians in Uruguay. It seems that there are far fewer of them than in Argentina, but with a comparable influence. In fact, perhaps the most classic and representative Tannat wine is Bouza’s A6, a long-aged wine, both Spanish and Uruguayan in character. We are not surprised to learn that the Bouza are descendants of Galician emigrants.

Hay como una osmosis mágica entre Madiran y Uruguay, que los aproxima. Los uruguayos parecen querer ser franceses, y a menudo se afanan en concentrar sus vinos, y los franceses miran con disimulo a los uruguayos, y los redondean. Los fondos son muy diversos, que los países sin invierno serio nunca dieron vinos angulares, y los de tierra de montañas tampoco supieron de gorduras, pero las formas son empáticas.

Me gustan mucho un tannat de Viña Progreso, el Sueño de Elisa, el natural de Viña de los Vientos, el Gran Reserva Constante de la Familia Dardanelli, Varela Zarranz y el Domaine Castelar de Juanicó.

Hemos hablado de vascos y canarios, pero, cómo no, en Uruguay hay también gallegos. Parece que muchos menos que en Argentina, pero con una influencia comparable. De hecho, el vino de tannat quizás más clásico y representativo sea el A6 de Bouza, un vino de larga crianza, tan español y uruguayo. No extraña saber que Bouza son descendientes de emigrantes gallegos.

URUGUAY, PURO ATLÁNTICO

The strongest Galician influence is now beginning to show in the wines of Bouza and others. It comes with a well-known name, Albariño. I believe that Uruguay has an enormous potential to produce great Albariños. They have everything they need. The Atlantic breeze, the mild temperatures and the high rainfall are the ideal environment for a good Albariño. Bouza was a pioneer in its introduction into Uruguay and Garzón does it very well.

Garzón is located in the east of the country, near Punta del Este, the Uruguayan Marbella which, instead of Saudis, attracts Argentines. It is a spectacular property, an impressive investment which has endowed it with a diverse vineyard and a gorgeous winery, but which does not prevent it from carrying out constant research work. While Canelones has an Atlantic influence, Garzón’s climate is pure oceanic.

They’ve planted everything here, but I’ll stick with their Albariño, made in the style of the greats from Salnés in Rías Baixas, with a long ageing on its lees.

La influencia gallega mas intensa está empezando a venir, de la mano de Bouza y de otros. Tiene un nombre bien conocido, albariño. El potencial de Uruguay para producir grandes albariños me parece enorme. Lo tienen todo para conseguirlo. Esa brisa atlántica, esas temperaturas suaves y esa lluvia tan presente son el hogar de los buenos albariños. Bouza fueron pioneros en su introducción en Uruguay, y Garzón lo borda.

Garzón se encuentra en el este del País, cerca de Punta del Este, la Marbella uruguaya, que en lugar de sauditas acoge argentinos. Es una propiedad espectacular, una inversión impresionante, que resulta en un viñedo variado y una bella bodega, lo que no impide un trabajo constante de investigación. Si Canelones es de influencia atlántica, Garzón es puro océano en su clima.

Allí han plantado de todo, pero me quedo con su albariño, hecho al modo de los grandes del Salnés de Rías Baixas, con una larga crianza en sus lías.

Albariño is destined to become an international variety.

Along with New Zealand and Argentina, Uruguay will create some exciting competition for our Portuguese and Galician classics, and maybe for Bordeaux and Cantabria.

Uruguayan wines are hard to find outside the country because the natives drink almost all of them. But I am sure that the remarkable improvement in the quality of some wines will convince producers to seek more exposure in international markets. The growing demand for “Atlantic wines” can only help this.

But there are other grape varieties and styles in Uruguay: interesting sparkling wines, good Cabernets and Sauvignons, some Tempranillo, Sangiovese even, and countless blends. There is still a lot of work to be done and a lot of innovation to be applied to define the styles, strive for exclusivity and to make the most of “Atlanticism”, but what they already have is definitely worth a look, and what is to come, even more so.

Albariño está destinada a convertirse en variedad internacional. Uruguay ofrecerá, junto a Nueva Zelanda y Argentina, una competencia más que estimulante a nuestros clásicos portugueses y gallegos y, quizás, de Burdeos y el Cantábrico.

No es fácil encontrar vinos uruguayos fuera del país, que los nacionales se lo beben casi todo. Pero estoy seguro que la subida más que notable de la calidad de algunos vinos convencerán a los productores de exponerse más al mercado global. El creciente gusto por los vinos atlánticos no puede por menos que ayudar a ello.

Hay más variedades y estilos en Uruguay: interesantes espumosos, buenos cabernet y sauvignon, algún tempranillo, incluso sangiovese, e innumerables mezclas.

Queda mucho trabajo por hacer, mucha innovación que aplicar, definir estilos, hurgar en la exclusividad, regodearse de atlantismo, pero lo que ya hay vale bien la pena, y lo que vendrá aún más.

URUGUAY, PURO ATLÁNTICO

Obviously, there is nothing better than immersing yourself in Uruguayan wines in the land of their birth, in that fantastic city of Montevideo where not even the nasty architecture (punishing it like acne on the skin of a teenager!) detracts from its natural beauty or the cheerfulness of its inhabitants. But it is not hard to imagine its beauty when tasting some of its wines.

Evidentemente, nada mejor que bañarse en el vino uruguayo en su propia tierra, en esa fantástica Montevideo a la que ni la horrible arquitectura, que la castiga como si fuera acné en la piel de un joven, ha sido capaz de quitar su belleza natural ni la alegría de sus habitantes. Pero no es difícil imaginarse su belleza gustando algunos de sus vinos.

At this time of year (although this year is obviously different due to the pandemic), families will be gathering together in their homes. In Spain, these gatherings all feature similar components: the finest crockery, cutlery and stemware, as well as delicious meat, fish, nougat, etc., and, of course, the still and sparkling wines needed to accompany the meals.

One of the very special moments during any festive season is when we raise a toast to Christmas and the New Year. We have therefore selected some of the most interesting sparkling wines currently on the market.

Our selection includes sparkling wines from around the world such as Champagne, Cava, Corpinnat, Clàssic Penedès and Conca Riu Anoia but we also crossed the pond to bring you some sparkling wines from North America (California) and South America (Chile).

In terms of colours, we have white, rosé and even Blanc de Noirs. The styles are also diverse, not only in terms of dosage but in ageing too. We offer you both Brut (maximum 6 grams of sugar per litre) and Brut Nature (maximum 3 grams).

As far as the ageing is concerned, you will find not only Reserva (minimum 15 months ageing) and Gran Reserva (30 months ageing), but vintage sparkling wines and extra-long aged sparkling wines as well.

, Burbujas de celebración En estas fechas, aunque este año de manera distinta debido a la situación, se viven en nuestras casas momentos de reunión familiar. Estas reuniones tienen actores parecidos en todas las familias. La mesa, los platos y las copas están a la orden del día así como las viandas, pescados, turrones y, como no podía ser de otra manera, también los vinos y espumosos se suman para acompañar las comidas.

En estas fechas es momento de hablar de uno de los momentos más especiales: el del brindis para celebrar la Navidad y el año nuevo. Es por este motivo que hemos seleccionado algunos de los espumosos más interesantes que podéis encontrar en la actualidad.

La selección engloba espumosos del mundo como el Champagne, el Cava, el Corpinnat, el Clàssic Penedès o el Conca Riu Anoia son algunos de los orígenes de los espumosos de nuestra casa pero, en este caso, hemos cruzado el charco para ofreceros alguno del norte (California) y del sur de América (Chile).

A nivel de colores tenemos todas las posibilidades que nos podemos encontrar: blancos, rosados e incluso blanc de noirs. Los estilos también son diversos, no solo en dosage sino que también en crianza ya que os ofrecemos espumosos Brut (máximo 6 gr de azúcar por litro) y Brut Nature (máximo 3 gramos). En cuanto al tiempo de crianza también hemos querido presentar un buen abanico ya que no solo encontrareis los Reserva (mínimo 15 meses de crianza) o los Gran Reserva (30 meses de crianza) sino que también tenemos espumosos de cosecha y de largas crianzas.

A su vez es un innovador constante en la elaboración del vino en general y del cava en particular. Una de sus últimas cartas es este Alta Alella 10, refiriéndose a la cosecha 2010. Un Cava de chardonnay donde el vino base fermenta en roble Allier antes de ponerlo en botella para que su crianza sea de un mínimo de 10 años. The world’s most awarded Champagne House, Louis Roederer has broken another record by being the first House to repeat this accolade. Robert Parker recently awarded 100 points to the Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé 2008, putting it at the pinnacle of all sparkling wines and making Roederer the first producer to be able to boast of two champagnes with 100 Parker points.

Created by Jean-Claude Rouzaud in 1974, Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé is a champagne crafted from a selection of old Pinot Noir vines, today grown biodynamically. This is a little gem whose tiny production makes it legendary and which is unanimously considered to be the best Champagne in the world by wine critics. Composed of 56% Pinot Noir and 44% Chardonnay, Cristal Rosé 2008 underwent an average of 8 years cellar-ageing followed by 8 months rest after disgorgement to perfect its maturity.

85-year-old Viura vines planted at high altitude combined with a young Tempranillo Blanco. The wine’s acidity and low alcohol content are balanced by very aromatic grapes that lend it complexity.

La madera dulce con las notas de vainilla en nariz nos aproxima a un blanco de reserva. Un vino con carácter, pero delicado y elegante que combina con infinidad de platos y nos puede acompañar en multitud de ocasiones. The nose may be reticent, but the palate is plethoric. It has a fine volume but a robust structure thanks to its fermentation and long ageing in oak barrels. This wine shows nice body and a vibrant, vertical, exuberant and silky character. The fruit, the citrus and flint aromas and the salinity give us a wine that is constantly speaking to us, whispering to us and seducing us. Even when the wine is no longer on the palate, we still recognise its essence, its greatness and its plenitude.

Sus uvas nacen en una preciosa finca de tan solo una hectárea y media, con orientación sureste y suelo de cantos rodados. Si la nariz es reticente, en boca se muestra pletórico. The white Malkoa is a single-estate, limited-production Txakoli. This is a production process that makes the most of the land and of nature, but above all of the grape, a grape that offers us everything we need to enjoy it.

On the palate, it is pure, fresh and delicate with a smooth, rounded finish making it enjoyable on its own or served with food.

This dry white wine comes from 100-year-old vineyards. Its acidity, citrus aromas and freshness on the palate will work wonderfully with good shellfish and baked fish, as the wine will bring out the flavour of the fresh seafood.

VINOS TINTOS LA AGUILERA 2016 · LEGARIS (Grupo Codorniu)

D.O. Ribera de Duero / Curiel de Duero, Burgos - Spain / www.legaris.com / P.V.P.: 32,00€ / 100% Tinto fino / 15º Just over 2,000 bottles of this wine were produced in September 2018. This wine was made in the same way as the village wines used to be made, in an open press, with native yeasts, spontaneous fermentation and no temperature control. This work has been done with one objective: to ensure that what the drinker finds in the bottle is a genuine expression. Nice aromatic intensity of black fruit, liquorice, spicy notes against a smoky backdrop, elegant tannins and plenty of complexity. This is a new style of wine that is emerging strongly.

Poco más de dos mil botellas se elaboraron de este vino en septiembre de 2018. Un vino hecho como se hacían los vinos de pueblo, en lagar abierto, con levaduras autóctonas, fermentación espontánea y sin control de temperatura. Con un objetivo, que encontremos la expresión genuina de lo que hay en la botella. Buena intensidad aromática de fruta negra, regaliz, notas especiadas sobre un fondo ahumado, elegante tanicidad y mucha complejidad. Un nuevo estilo de vinos que emerge con fuerza.

LA ZORRERA 2015 · BODEGAS CHIVITE

Tres Riberas / Cintruénigo, Navarra - Spain / www.chivite.com / P.V.P.:30,00€ / 100% Garnacha / 14,95º The Legarreta estate, where this magnificent red wine, La Zorrera, is produced, is located in the Navarrese village of Villatuerta. Here they have over 6 hectares of Garnacha growing in clay and limestone soils. This is a Garnacha estate wine from the Navarre region. It seems the logical thing to do, but Chivite had been slow to bring it to market. And as good things come to those who wait, here it is. According to the winemaker, César Muñoz, it is “a red with the soul of a white”: great intensity, tart black fruit, unctuous and meaty on the palate.

En el municipio navarro de Villatuerta, se encuentra la finca Legarreta, de donde sale este magnífico tinto La Zorrera. Más de seis hectáreas de Garnacha plantada en suelos de arcilla y caliza. Un vino de finca de Garnacha en Navarra, algo lógico pero que Chivite ha tardado en sacar al mercado. Y como lo bueno se hace esperar, aquí está. Según su enólogo César Muñoz, lo describe como “un tinto con alma de blanco”: alta intensidad, fruta negra ácida, untuoso y carnoso en boca.

by Benedictine monks, who returned to the Abbey of Montserrat after they had purged their sins.

The estate grows local varietals, Garnacha and Cariñena, as well as Syrah. Hence the wine’s intense red colour and aromas of Mediterranean herbs and black fruit, along with balsamic and toffee. On the palate, we find vigour, freshness and body.

La bodega se levanta sobre unas tierras de condiciones climáticas muy duras y que, históricamente, eran trabajadas como penitencia por los monjes benedictinos, los cuales retornaban a la Abadía de Montserrat una vez purgados aquí sus pecados. Una finca de cultivo de variedades locales, Garnacha y Cariñena, además de la Syrah. De ahí su color rojo intenso con aromas de hierbas mediterráneas y frutos negros, junto con los balsámicos y los tofees. En boca, vigor, frescor y cuerpo.

Tempranillo from old vines combined with some Graciano has resulted in an intense, fruity, fullbodied wine with toasted and smoky notes and an endless finish. You can enjoy now but, if you are patient, it will taste much better in a few years.

Si se tiene terroir - buenas cepas, un suelo privilegiado y un clima que acompaña-, y se pone el alma en las elaboraciones, se obtienen vinos como este. Un Tempranillo de cepas ancianas, con algo de Graciano, dan como resultado un vino intenso y afrutado, con notas tostadas y ahumadas, amplio y con cuerpo, y un final inagotable. This Village wine, which can be cellar-aged for up to 5 years, displays elegance with red fruit and spicy aromas. It is fresh, light and luscious in taste. Its tannins are soft and fine and its finish is very delicate and subtle.

Una bodega histórica y familiar dirigida por la quinta generación. Sus ocho hectáreas de viñedo se encuentran repartidas entre Morey-Saint-Denis en un 85% y en Gevrey-Chambertin. Este vino de Village, que se podrá guardar hasta cinco años más, muestra frutos rojos y especias, es elegante, y de sorbo fresco, ligero y goloso.

Sus taninos son suaves y finos y su final de boca muy delicado y sutil.

Here, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the typical varietals of Lussac-Saint-Emilion region, northeast of Bordeaux, are perfectly combined. These wines, made from lovely, healthy grapes, are very accessible.

De color rojo rubí, en nariz aparecen unas golosas cerezas, ciruelas rojas y moras maduras, con balsámicos y especies. En boca una acidez que se equilibra bien con la fruta y alargado en su final de boca. Aquí se encuentran a la perfección las variedades propias de Lussac-SaintEmilion, al nordeste de Bordeaux, la Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon y Cabernet Franc. Vinos muy asequibles a partir de una uva rica y sana.
