KAMPUNG DAYS! Staff of Seletar ruled the roost on Monday 14 November last year as the Club closed its doors for the annual Staff Day. Nostalgia filled the air as the theme “Back to Kampung Days” saw merry groups of staff sashaying around in all kinds of ethnic wear – right down to the clogs and hair ties!

Organised by the Ladies’ Sub-Committee, the event started with a golf session in the morning followed by a sumptuous lunch at Eagle’s View where many took the chance to relive the good old days, dressed in various school attire such as cute school girls, prim and proper teachers and even a principal! Letter to Seletar Country Club
Dear Chairman, Vice Chairman, Captain, Committees and Staff of Seletar. Happy Holidays! This year is almost over and here’s to the up and downs that make it another memorable one. I haven’t had a chance to be at the club as often as I would have liked this year, but at the same time am extremely glad of the opportunity to play on tour with the best in the world. This is my thank you letter to you. CHANGES FOR THE NEW YEAR! Members would have noticed that our tee-boxes at Holes 1 and 10 have recently been enhanced with additional blue and white teeing grounds. This allows for rotational placement of tees which not only provides golfers with different teeing off perspectives, it also prevents the turf on the white and blue tees from being worn out due to over-usage. In addition to the tees enhancement work, clearer buggy parking lots have been drawn next to the tee-boxes to guide golfers to park appropriately. Parking onto the turf has resulted in turf mortality, marring the beauty of our course. Let’s work together to keep our greens looking pitch-perfect!

SELETAR JUNIORS
MAKING IT
BIG
Our Seletar Juniors certainly ended their 2016 on a high note! Known for their long drives, focus and dedication to the game, Seletar juniors Lucius Toh, Erwyn Lam and Gan Shian once again brought glory to the club and country with their admirable wins in the international circuit. Seletar Buzz caught up with these young men in the middle of their hectic schedules to eke out a little glory for ourselves!
ERWYN LAM CHAMPION, WORLD AMATEUR GOLFERS CHAMPIONSHIP For Singapore! : Erwyn (far right) pictured beaming with his team mates after their win. Photo: Erwyn Lam
Together with your team, you recently helped put Singapore on the map at the World Amateur Golfers Championship in Durban, South Africa. It was a double win as the team emerged champions and you too won the Individual event. Tell us what it felt like when you first heard the results being announced? Erwyn Lam (EL): It was a pretty tense moment prior to the dinner as the results were only going to be announced at the prize presentation. But once we heard
our country's name being announced, the feeling was pretty remarkable! You have also competed in several individual events in your youth. In comparison to this team event, what are the main differences in preparation? EL: Youth was definitely not on my side! Having gone through three massive knee surgeries and a shoulder reconstruction, it was more challenging than ever to endure six days of golf. For once in my

life, I had to be really disciplined in the areas of nutrition and recovery. I even had bags of ice on standby after each round to nurse the swollen knee! What are your golfing goals for the New Year? EL: (laughs) My personal goal would be to improve my golf game and beat a fellow golfer at the Club who can “hit the golf ball by a mile"!

GAN SHIAN RUNNER-UP, MERCEDESTROPHY WORLD FINAL 2016 As a youth player, you competed in several tournaments in the region. What words of advice would you have for aspiring players looking to break into the international circuit? GS: Love what you do and always have a dream to work towards. Don't be afraid to dream big! Be focused and keep yourself motivated. This includes making each of your practice sessions fun and exciting. It is not how many times one can fail but the number of times you pick yourself up and learn from your mistakes that determines how successful and how far you can go!
Standing proud: Gan Shian (far left) pictured with other award winners at the MercedesTrophy World Final in Stuttgart, Germany. Photo: Gan Shian
Congratulations on your impressive performance at the MercedesTrophy World Final in Stuttgart last October. You were competing against 95 other participants from over 30 countries. How significant was this win to you? Gan Shian (GS): The entire journey has been amazing and I am definitely blessed to be part of this great sporting event. I had stopped playing competitively for a number of years and to be able to get back to competing made me realise just how much I truly miss it. To qualify all the way through to Germany and to win a trophy back for Singapore meant a lot to me.

What are you looking forward to most in the Year of the Rooster? GS: My immediate goals in terms of my golfing would be to strengthen my game from 100m and in. But my dream is to hopefully hit a hole-in-one. I have never hit a single hole-in-one and I have to admit seeing the uncles from my golfing group, D'Golfers, hitting hole-in-ones every other month does make me feel a little jealous. It would be pretty special to get myself on that list!
