Dear Members,

Season’s Greetings! In a blink of an eye, the festive season beckons.

Some members may have noticed that the Club is bustling with activities and events now. In the coming weeks, our staff will be busy preparing the busiest time of the year to bring smiles to the faces of our members and guests. I am thrilled to share that the Club has grand plans to cap the year off with a bang!

A MEMORABLE YEAR & EXCITING TIMES AHEAD

Over the last year, the Club has achieved multiple milestones, despite difficult economic and labour market circumstances, including:

• Digitalisation of many key processes including golf bookings

• Completed renovation of the ageing Sports Complex

• Added more options to our food and beverage offerings with JO’s Restaurant and Famous Palace

• Built a new Practice Chipping Green Facility; and

• Secured higher levels of sponsorship for Club’s events.

At the time of writing this message, renovation works are still ongoing for the Main Reception counter and a brand-new Members Lounge located on the second floor of the Main Clubhouse. When the Members Lounge opens its doors in November, I hope that members and guests will enjoy the new environment and that you will extend your support for our new food & beverage outlet.

Members of both the Management Committee and Sub-Committees make a significant contribution to ensuring the longevity of the Club, the quality of its facilities, the dining and event experiences, the working environment, ensuring quality IT and other systems, managing marketing and communications, and most importantly, the enhancement of members’ experience. I would like to thank all those who are involved in committees for their valuable commitment.

FESTIVE EVENTS & PROMOTIONS

Before we welcome the new year, do join us at the Christmas Light-Up event happening on Saturday, 26 November. Prior to the light-up, members can enjoy some light shopping at the Christmas Bazaar from many interesting vendors.

After a long hiatus, we are finally able to hold the annual year-end countdown party again. Our Sports & Social sub-committee and staff are making plans to ensure that this will be a party to remember! So be sure to register your interest early to avoid disappointment.

Our F&B team are also hard at work, making sure that the Club will take care of our festive dining needs. For those who wish to dine at the comfort of your own homes, a special takeaway menu is available as well.

While we enjoy the year-end festivities, let us not forget those who rely on our generosity during this season. We have partnered with The Boys’ Brigade in their AdoptA-Wish campaign. We seek your generous support to adopt the wishes of the underprivileged and help bring a smile to their faces. More details can be found in this issue.

CLUB CLOSURE FOR ANNUAL STAFF DAY

The success of the Club would not have been possible without the constant support and hard work of our staff. On Monday, 28 November, the Club will be closed for the day so that all our staff can attend the annual Staff Day. Thank you also in advance, for your contribution to the annual staff’s Hong Bao Fund. Members will receive a letter shortly notifying you of this donation. This annual gesture of goodwill will be immensely appreciated by all staff.

On behalf of the Management, I wish all members and loved ones a Merry Christmas and joyful New Year.

Introducing Our NEW SPORTS AND SOCIAL TEAM MEMBERS

In this issue of Seletar Buzz, let us introduce you to 3 new staff who have recently joined our family at Seletar Country Club as part of the Sports & Social team! If you happen to see them around the Club, please say hi to them!

Before joining Seletar Country Club, I used to work for Tanah Merah Country Club and the Singapore Sports Hub.

I have a wealth of experience in Facilities & Club Management. My skills include but are not limited to all aspects of events management such as conceptualization, planning and execution.

I chose to work at Seletar Country Club due to the variety of facilities offered such as the Bowling Alley, Karaoke Lounge and Spa. The role of Assistant Executive, Sports & Social enticed me to join the club as based on the job description, I felt it could really help to broaden my working experience and would be beneficial for future career progression. One of my favorite parts of working at Seletar Country Club is being able to admire the stunning golf course.

Despite the many ups and downs during my first 3 months at the Club, every challenge that I have faced thus far has only made me better at making the right decisions and empowers me to step outside my comfort zone.

Seletar Country Club is my first full time working stint in Singapore since 1994. Outside of work, I greatly enjoy singing in my spare time.

What I love the most about working at Seletar Country Club is its proximity to my home. I am also blessed with great team members that proactively support one another.

NORSIDAH SHAMSUDIN

Admin Assistant

Prior to joining Seletar Country Club (SCC), I was an Executive in the Staff Recreational Club at Changi Airport.

In my previous job, I handled a myriad of administrative duties such as corporate bookings, billing, and invoices. Apart from these, I also contributed to organizing, planning and execution of events & activities involving staff, members, and stakeholders.

SCC is a well-known and reputable Country Club. After finding out more about SCC, I decided to be part of the team. I enjoy SCC’s atmosphere and the administrative duties that go along with the job. The SCC staff are friendly, helpful, and fun loving. I was given a pleasant onboarding experience too.

Outside of work, I enjoy sewing craft and spending quality time with my family.

MAIN RECEPTION & MEMBERS LOUNGE

Over the past year, Seletar Country Club has embarked on several capital expenditure projects that were initiated with the express purpose of bringing us up to a higher standard. After the completion of the Sports Complex Renovation, we immediately embarked on renovating the Main Reception and turning the old Reading Room into a Members Lounge.

The Main Reception as you knew it will be completely overhauled and updated to feature a more contemporary style. There will also be more accessible and user-friendly touch points for members to enjoy a more pleasant experience. By the time you read this, the Main Reception will have been reopened. The Members Lounge is a longer-term project that will require more time to come to fruition. At the time of writing, renovation works on it are progressing very smoothly and we hope to have more updates for you in the coming months. If anything, we can assure you the wait will be worth it! For now, let us share with you artist’s impressions of the Main Reception and Members Lounge.

JO’S RESTAURANT GRAND OPENING

The highly anticipated Grand Opening of Jo Japanese Restaurant took place on Saturday, 24 September 2022. Guests started arriving at 11.30am with lunch commencing at 12pm. As one would expect, guests were treated to a truly decadent and sumptuous buffet spread consisting of sushi, sashimi, and deep-fried Japanese delights. Everything was plated immaculately and prepared from the freshest ingredients. The event concluded with a Champagne Popping ceremony at 1pm. Seletar Country Club is delighted to welcome another quality F&B establishment to our family, and we hope you will support them on your next visit to the Club!

OKTOBERFEST 2022 AT SELETAR COUNTRY CLUB

Oktoberfest

at Seletar Country Club. This classic Bavarian event is celebrated around the world annually from mid or late September to around the first Sunday in October. At Seletar Country Club, we celebrated Oktoberfest on Thursday, 22 September 2022 and Friday, 23 September 2022. The celebration was held at the Seletar Tavern, which had been painstakingly transformed into a Bavarian Beer Hall. There was also a hearty spread of Bavarian and international dishes including German Borscht with Pretzels, Crispy Pork Knuckle, German Sausages, Pretzel Crusted Chicken, Braised Erdinger Beef Goulash, German Carrot Cake with Cheese Dip and more. There was also a free flow of Erdinger Beer. Our Emcee for the night, Sylvia Tham, really got the crowd in the right mood with her spontaneity, charisma, and natural flair to build quick rapport with a diverse audience.

As is tradition with Oktoberfest celebrations in the past, we had the Swiss Alpine Lions Band belting out their vast repertoire of rock anthems, iconic pop songs, traditional Bavarian folk songs and rousing drinking tunes. The ‘SWISS ALPINE LIONS’ band was formed in the year 2002 in Singapore by some enthusiastic part-time musicians. The full band counts now 9 musicians. Some are SWISS nationals, others come from the surrounding ALPINE countries and Singapore (the LION city.) All have years of experience in European Country Brass / Wind Bands. The band received high recognition in Singapore and S.E. Asia through entertaining at various Oktoberfests, Country-Clubs & Corporate-Events, Carnivals, Parties, and many other events.

See you at next year’s Oktoberfest event!

GOLF TRIP GOLD COAST

Before the pandemic, golf trips beyond the shores of Singapore used to be regular fixtures on the Club’s annual calendar of activities and events. These trips combined time spent visiting unique golf courses in foreign lands whilst factoring in sightseeing excursions on the side and were always eagerly anticipated by members. Up until earlier this year, a combination of restrictive border control measures and lack of consumer confidence had curtailed appetite for international travel. Thankfully, a relaxation of restrictions worldwide earlier this year meant that leisure travel is now back on everyone’s agenda. For Seletar Country Club, that meant being able to resume its golf trips overseas.

Thus, the club’s first overseas golf trip in years took place from Monday, 22 August 2022 till Sunday, 28 August 2022 with the group headed Down Under to the sunny Sunshine state of Queensland in Australia

to experience some of the country’s best golf courses and renown natural beauty. It consisted of 40 members, and was led by Club Captain Ho Juan Heng, Vice-Captain Winson Soh, Greens Sub-Committee members Michael Lim & Francis Ng. Over 7 eventful days, 4 rounds of golf were played at 4 different golf courses that challenged the forte and skill of our golfers with their distinct characteristics and features. Despite the emotional highs and lows of winning putts and great escapes, the most priceless memories came from the great company. Throughout the trip, the group was blessed with beautiful weather. For those wishing to put together their golfing own trip to the Sunshine Coast, here’s a day-by-day overview of the group’s itinerary, with interesting trivia about the respective golf courses thrown in for good measure:

GOLF
8
Over 7 eventful days, 4 rounds of golf were played at 4 different golf courses that challenged the forte...

22 Aug

The group played at the Sanctuary Cove, Palms Course

• A par 70, measuring slightly more than 5000 meters welcomed the players to a relatively easier course to start the golf trip on.

• Wide fairways but framed by thick tropical vegetation which penalizes bad misses.

23 Aug

The group played at the Sanctuary Cove, Pines Course

• It is an Arnold Palmer signature course that features a pine forest and lakes guarding approaches to several holes.

24 Aug

The group visits Mount Tamborine & Cedar Creek Estate

• Mount Tamborine is 1772 feet high and offers an

uninterrupted view of the surrounding hinterland and coastline.

• The group also took part in Wine Tasting at the Winery and a Glow Worm Tour.

25 Aug

The group visits BrookWater Golf Club

• About 1.5 hours coach ride from the hotel, sits Queensland’s version of Augusta National. Lined with native eucalyptus forest, undulating fairways and greens, golfers were tested on their course management.

26 Aug

The group visits Links Hope Island Golf Club

The trip’s conclusion was played at this course, which is guarded by 115 challenging pot style bunkers, to name one of the hazards. The signature Par 3 Hole 17 is 180 meters off the white tees, with most players falling short of the green due to the prevailing head wind.

NEW PRACTICE CHIPPING GREEN GRAND OPENING CEREMONY

We officially opened the Practice Chipping Green on Saturday, 3 September 2022. It was a truly momentous event that had been highly anticipated for a while now.

Two years ago, we were voted the Best Renovated Golf Course in Asia Pacific. This year, we are nominated for the Singapore’s Best Golf Course category in the World Golf Awards.

A golf club will not be great without great practice facilities and golf course, and nothing is more important to an avid golfer than decent practice grounds. Except maybe the provision of a vibrant 19th hole. The addition of this new practice chipping facility will not just enhance the playing experience of our golfers but also provide an additional training ground for our junior golfers. Perhaps with this additional practice facility, which was built according to the USGA specification, we will see a great increase of birdies, eagles, and hole in ones from our Seletar golfers!

CHAIRMAN’S APPRECIATION GAME & DINNER

It is a treasured Club tradition to show our appreciation through the office of the Chairman to both the Management Committee and sub-committee members for their valuable contribution with an annual appreciation golf game and dinner.

Due to the golf course renovation in 20182019 and pandemic, we were unable to hold this event until this year; hence, the committee members from term 2019 – 2021 was also invited to this event.

The Boston Legal-themed dinner was a hit amongst the guests, and it was heartening to see them dressed for the occasion. Club Chairman Kelvin Chia shared his gratitude for the members who have generously volunteered both their time and hard work for the betterment of the Club.

Our heartiest congratulations to the golf game’s winners – Tan Teck Eng (42 pts OCB), Leow Pee Lip (41 pts OCB), David Foo (40 pts OCB), Jennifer Schoon (39 pts OCB), and Erik Heng (39 pts OCB).

A big thank you once again to all committee members for your service to the Club!

SELETAR TENNIS FAMILIES

Tennis has always been one of the pillars of strength of Seletar Country Club and a proud part of our rich heritage. Throughout the years, we have produced remarkably talented tennis players that have gone on to win major silverware for the Club. Of course, this is no mere coincidence. Most, if not all our tennis players hail from families where tennis is part their tapestry. Everyone in the family, whether young or old, play tennis with fervent passion. Remember, a family that plays tennis together stays together!

In this issue of Seletar Buzz, let us introduce you to 4 of these tennis families!

Mr. Zhang Yufeng has been playing tennis from a young and tender age. In fact, it was on the tennis court that he met his wife, Ms. Leslie Zhang. As they say, the rest is history!

After joining Seletar Country Club, they were provided with many opportunities to not only use the facilities but also participate in interclub tournaments. Together with other like-minded tennis players, they found a home away from home and won glory for the Club in various competitions over the years. Mr. Zhang fondly recalls the Club sponsoring them for tournaments organized by the Singapore Tennis Association (STA). He adds, “Participants from other Clubs have always praised the standards of our world class facilities and professionalism of our staff.”

To Mr. Zhang, playing tennis is considered the best form of family bonding. As such, it is no surprise to find out that his two daughters, Rachel Zhang, and Chloe Zhang, have taken to tennis like fishes to water. He says, “Through playing tennis, my daughters have learnt to handle frustration more effectively, while learning to be resilient and positive too. Once you have mastered these feelings, victory on the court will taste even sweeter!”.

On the future of tennis in Singapore, he adds, “The popularity of tennis has skyrocketed in recent years. The pandemic restricted indoor activities, which drove more people onto the tennis courts. More importantly, people realized tennis is such an amazing sport that can both strengthen your health and enhance family bonding at the same time.”

18
Participants from other Clubs have always praised the standards of our world class facilities and professionalism of our staff.

Mr. Desmond Tay needs no further introduction. After all, he is the highly respected Captain of Seletar Country Club’s Tennis team. Introduced at the tender and young age of 10 to tennis, Mr. Desmond Tay only started getting serious during his teen years. He says, “Back then I was always following (and recording) my tennis idols' matches - Edberg, Sampras, Agassi, during those grand slams and watching some of them live (including Chang and Lendl) when they were here in Singapore. Alas, during my National Service, I was selected to play for the Airforce tennis team, which got me exposed and interested in more competitive tennis.”

Not many know this, but Desmond subsequently dropped tennis for another sport. It wasn’t till 5-6 years ago that tennis made a comeback in his life. Ironically, it was his son picking up the sport that got the ball rolling. Fortunately, he hadn’t lost too much muscle memory and after some training, Desmond managed to recover his groove. Just last year, he underwent a coaching course with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is now a certified Tennis coach.

Desmond’s son, Bennett Tay, is 11 this year and has been going for once-a-week group training sessions since he was just 6. He recalls that initially, Bennett wasn’t very keen on tennis. It was only 2 years ago when he attended a tennis camp and after watching (in awe) how good some of the competitive juniors were, that triggered his strong passion for tennis. Since then, he has been

training around 4 times a week and participates in various club, national school games and Junior Team Tennis League (JTTL) and Singapore Tennis Association (STA) competitions.

Upon seeing how much his son had progressed, Desmond decided to gather the tennis kids in Seletar and discussed with the Sports & Social team on how to establish a proper juniors training pathway. It was during these discussions that he was asked to be the Club’s Tennis team Captain. He says,

Seletar has the right facilities, adequate support from management and talented players to have a good run at interclub tournaments and we'll continue to work together to strengthen our tennis community and standards and plan for more on- and off-court activities. In our men's interclub team, some of our veteran players have been playing tennis together for decades, which is a strong testament that club friends are indeed lifelong friends, and it's great to see them bond over tennis!

Family 2: Mr. Desmond Tay, Bennett Tay
SPORTS + SOCIAL 19

Family 3: Mr. Ronald Thia, Ms. Sandy Ho, Sean Thia

Mr. Ronald Thia and his wife, Ms. Sandy Ho, never used to be serious about tennis until their son, Sean Thia, picked up the sport in school. From the young and tender age of 5, Sean started taking tennis classes at Seletar Country Club. Through their son undergoing classes and participating in various tournaments, Ronald and Sandy got hooked on tennis too! Apart from Sean, they themselves became better players and were taught the value of resilience and sportsmanship. Sean attends classes (on an individual basis as well as part of a group) roughly 3-4 times per week. He also trains with this school team (SJI Junior). Doing so has afforded him the experience of participating in tournaments.

As kids and grown-ups play tennis with each more often, the kids become little buddies while the adults become good friends. It is this bond between the families that keeps them going. This also translates to camaraderie on the court, which motivates everyone to do better at tennis. Acknowledging that the pandemic has played a part too, Ronald says,

Covid has played a part. However, I also feel that the Club has organised classes and competitions to generate interest. It first started with 4 to 5 kids, then more joined. I hope as that as the initial group of kids grow up, more younger kids will join to take their place. Joining competitions is a fun way to bond and improve your tennis skills.

In their opinion, tennis is a sport that the entire family can play together. They can shop, talk, watch, and play tennis, which is a great recipe for quality family time!

Family 4: Mr. Gene Wong, Ms. Hung Jean, Wong Kaegen, Wong Kenrick and Wong Kiefer

Before getting married, Ms. Hung Jean and her husband, Mr. Gene Wong had already been playing tennis together. Naturally, they hoped their kids would pick it up and display a similar level of interest in the sport. The kiddos started taking classes from a young age and have not looked back since. Ms. Hung Jean says, “My children take lessons at the Club at least 3-4 times per week and have joined some Singapore Tennis Association (STA) and Junior Team Tennis League (JTTL) tournaments. My husband and I regularly join the interclub and STA games too to further our match play experience.”

Ms. Hung Jean appreciates how close-knit the tennis community at Seletar Country Club is and its

orientation towards families. She also commends the Sports & Social team on being friendly and helpful. The families help each other through various means, such as carpooling and child-minding when there are concurrent matches in multiple locations. Outside of tennis, it is not uncommon for them to hang out over food and drinks too.

Ms. Hung Jean’s greatest takeaway is that playing tennis together has helped her family to learn resilience, patience, and gratitude. She adds,

appreciate each other, have grown to enjoy healthy competition, and we also share in each other’s wins and losses. In tennis, even when you win you must lose a lot of points along the way, so it’s a sport that builds our character as a family. It’s also a fun way to keep fit and healthy together as a family!

TENNIS MATCH PLAY

Sports & Social organized the first Girls Tennis Match Play in August 2022 and continued with the 8th Season of the Junior Tennis Match play during the September school Holidays.

We have seen Seletar’s junior players improved their match play experience and skills, which has helped them when they participate in major competitions for Singapore Tennis Association (STA) and their respective schools. It was truly gratifying to see so many examples of exemplary skill and sportsmanship being showcased at all the matches by the players. Seletar Country Club would like to thank everyone who participated for their contributions in making our recent Match Play matches a roaring success. Also, congratulations to our winners!

Four Pillars Gin was named the world’s leading gin producer by the IWSC in London. They won again in 2020, making the Australia’s favourite gin officially the WORLD’S BEST.

Gin & Tonic Glass @ $11 (M) $13 (P)

Single Bottle @ $108 (M) $129 (P)

Twin Bottles @ $198 (M) $238 (P)

It’s spicy but with great citrus, a truly modern Australian gin which captures the essence of contemporary Australia’s heritage in Europe and Asia. Using whole oranges, which is unusual, means that the citrus is highly aromatic and supports the spicier botanicals like cardamom.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Delicate and refined. Soft sensual floral notes arise in perfect harmony supported by an attractive array of complex fruit flavours. Melon, pear and orange with a hint of almonds conclude this profusion of charming nuances.

Palate: Finesse and elegance gives way to a majestic assertion of pure malty flavours drawn from the four distilling regions of Scotland. Each area forges and makes its own inimitable contribution to this outstanding pure malt. The recipe of 16 Highland and Speyside malts is said to have stayed the same since its inception, and although it doesn’t carry an age statement, it’s claimed the malts used are up to 20 years old.
