FIRST WORDS
Chairman’s Message seen our junior James Leow making it into this year’s SGA National Squad, as well as Charles Alliston and Vanessa Khoo, who were initiated into the SGA Development Squad in 2015. Congratulations are also in order for our young Seletar athletes who earned accolades at the 28th SEA Games. Bowlers Keith and Howard Saw won gold and silver medals in the Men's Doubles and Men's Trios events respectively, while Johnson Poh claimed a silver medal in the Men’s Individual golf event. To have made the national team alone requires boundless discipline and determination, and I am proud of these young men for their sacrifices and commitment in bringing glory to Singapore.
Green Endeavours In June, our Butterfly Garden which was created by our Nature Group and the brainchild of nature enthusiast Foo Jit Leang was featured in the Straits Times. Thanks to the spotlight, more interest was generated for the garden and a Nature Ramble was held that month for Elias Green Primary School and Presbyterian High School.
Dear Members, As we cross the threshold into the second half of 2015, the pace is gradually picking up at Seletar Country Club, with several events leading up to the end of the year.
Sports Achievements Kicking off this series of events was our annual Seletar Junior Open (SJO), which was held from 16 to 18 June 2015. It was certainly an exciting tournament, with participation from many young talents across the region. I would like to congratulate Louis Tee for emerging the Overall Boys Winner and Lucius Toh for winning the Boys' ‘A’ Divisions as well as Ashley Loh, Vanessa Khoo and Hailey Loh for their respective wins. It is gratifying to witness how the Seletar Junior Programme has nurtured our young golfers into the athletes that they are today. Just this half of the year we have

The extra attention on the green endeavours of our Club and its members was a timely one – in the same month, the Club also received two certifications in 'Environmental Planning' and 'Education & Outreach' from Audubon International. This brings our golf course a step closer to being a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, and goes in line with the club’s mission to care for and preserve the flora and fauna that thrive in our Club.
Celebrating the Tavern's 10th Anniversary I am sure some members remember the Tavern as the old Pavilion – primarily used as an al fresco function area – before it was officially converted into the Seletar Tiger Tavern 10 years ago. Today, what many simply call the Seletar Tavern bustles with a vibrant night life at the heart of the Club. This year, we will celebrate its milestone anniversary on 15 August with a throwback kampong theme.
I urge members to join us as we take this opportunity to walk down memory lane and feast on cuisine reminiscent of yesteryears. Speaking of the good old kampong days, I also encourage members to contribute their old photos of the Seletar Base Golf Club to the Club as part of the research for our History & Heritage project. Your fond memories of the Club will help to paint a clearer picture as we document its past in our coffee table book.
Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner @ SELETAR Charity golf has also played a part in Seletar’s illustrious history. Since 1986, the Club has organised charity golf events to raise funds for our beneficiaries, and this has been successfully supported by members and friends. This year, in line with SG50, we will be hosting an appreciation dinner to honour our Pioneer Generation who have contributed to our nation building. These invitees include 250 elderly beneficiaries within the surrounding neighbourhood, many of whom are on Public Assistance and ComCare support programmes. I hope that members will support this event by pledging their contributions on the Club’s pledge board located at the Main Clubhouse Lobby. These donations will go towards the hong baos that will be given to each beneficiary, along with a goody bag. Let us give back to the community and remember those who have done much to bring the nation to where it is today.
Annual General Meeting Last but not least, Seletar’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Friday, 31 July and I hope to see you there.
Khoo Teng Chye Chairman
PIONEER GENERATION APPRECIATION DINNER @ Seletar Friday, 4 September 2015 7pm at Seletar Room $3,000 per table In conjunction with SG50, join us as we lend a helping hand to underprivileged elderly residents within our neighbourhood. Your contribution will go towards a Hong Bao worth $300 and goody bag for each beneficiary. Sign up at the pledge board (Main Clubhouse Lobby) from 1 August 2015 onwards. Revised Facilities Rates P
lease take note that with effect from Saturday, 1 August 2015, the following revised rates for the Club’s sports facilities will apply. However, the EnerGym will remain free to use for all members. Reason for increase in sailing charges: So far, the Club has not charged members for water sports facilities to encourage participation. However, the Management needs to cover the operational costs of engaging a safety boat driver as well as the costs of replacing worn equipment such as life jackets, sails and rigging. Reason for increase in bowling charges: Over the years, we have been improving our bowling facility to enhance members’ bowling experience. This includes installing lane bumpers, lane levelling and installing cosmic bowling lights. However, our rates and charges lag behind these enhancements. With the increase in charges, the Club will be able to cope with ever-increasing costs of operating the bowling centre.

New Designated Smoking Area W
ith the expansion of the Tavern’s dining area into the lawn, the National Environment Agency (NEA) has recommended that the smoking area now be shifted outdoors and away from non-smokers. In light of this, in May a new Designated Smoking Area (DSA) was set up at the Tavern lawn for smokers to use. This DSA is marked by yellow rivets in the ground, yellow tape on table edges, as well as a ‘Smoking Corner’ sign. With this new DSA, non-smokers are better protected against second-hand smoke when they dine at the Tavern.

The Overall Boys' Winner gets splashed
T
he June school holidays was a busy one for Seletar Country Club as we hosted the annual Seletar POSB Junior Open. Now in its third year in partnership with POSB, this year’s tournament saw a total of 82 young talents taking part. These juniors hailed not only from Singapore but also across the region and as far as the United States!
‘A’ Division and the Yan Jing Challenge Trophy; and Vanessa Khoo and Hailey Loh who won Runner-Up and Second RunnerUp respectively in the Girls ‘B’ Division. The event also saw several of our participants from overseas who won several awards – among them are Inez Wanamarta from Indonesia, who emerged the Overall Girls' Winner for
The first round of the three-day event held from 16 to 18 June was a slippery one, and the light rain coupled with wet terrain proved to be challenging for all participants. Thankfully, in the second and final rounds, the young golfers enjoyed much better weather conditions but much stiffer competition as the days passed. Still, Seletarians fought hard to remain at the top of the leader board, and we are happy to announce that our very own junior golfer, Louis Tee went home as the Overall Boys' Winner for the event. Other Seletarian winners include last year’s champion, Lucius Toh, who came in first in the Boys ‘A’ Division; Ashley Loh who clinched both Runner-Up for the Girls

Who Says Golf Isn’t A Team Sport? Jing Yan’s Father-Daughter Team By Amy Rogers This article was first published by LPGA.com on 21 May 2015, and is reproduced in this issue with permission from the writer. Rookie Jing Yan watched too, slightly closer to the action. From the TV broadcast booth. The daughter of veteran ESPN golf commentator in Asia, Yan Ming, she had a front row seat to learning the game from golf’s biggest names. “He was invited to host many events in the Asia region such as the HSBC Women's and Men’s Champions,” Yan said by email Thursday. “He also needed to take care of me as well, so whenever I was not in school I tagged along with him on set hoping to meet my idols.”
Jennifer's mother, Zhang Hong, has also been a strong support system throughout her career
T
here’s a special feeling that comes from tuning in to watch the final round of a major championship, seeing players battling down the closing stretch on any given Sunday or witnessing a player's surprising come from behind finish to capture their his or her victory on Tour. (sic)
And meet them she did. During a trip to the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai where her father was emcee for the tournament clinic, nine-year-old Yan stood in the crowd watching Tiger Woods give tips when she soon became the main attraction. “The session was almost over when my dad pointed out to Tiger that there was a nine year old girl crouching in the corner of the sea of people and whether he would like to see her hit a few shots,” Yan said. “Tiger asked me to come forward and I took a nine iron and set three shots straight at the pin which made me immensely relieved considering how nervous I was meeting Tiger Woods!”
Jennifer Yan and her parents stand proud as she receives her honorary membership
GOLF
Jennifer teeing off at the Chairman's Trophy game
Yan says her parents also took her to watch one of her biggest idols, Annika Sorenstam. “Growing up, Annika was a huge role model being who she was and the role she played in the world of women's golf,” Yan said. “I was able to watch her practice which made me really excited. On the first day I tried to ask for her autograph but was too shy, but I got my chance on the next when I saw her and finally plucked up the courage to do it!” Now Yan is the one signing autographs as a rookie this season on the LPGA Tour. A 34th place finish at Qualifying School earned her conditional status and a spot at 183 on the Tour’s Priority List to start the season, requiring her to Monday qualify for most events. With only seven or eight opportunities to qualify in the first ten events of the year, she made the most of the chances she was given, earning a spot in the field at the Coates Golf Championship and LOTTE Championship. She also played in the HSBC Women’s Champions. Her T-66, T-46 and T-58 finishes were enough to move her up to 154 on the Priority List after the reshuffle following the Volunteers of America North Texas Shootout. With her new status, the former Girls British Open Amateur champion earned her way into last week’s Kingsmill Championship Presented by JTBC and posted her best finish at T-11. “It was the first tournament that I was able to get into based on my status, giving me an opportunity to prepare with more time on both strategy and technique without the immense pressure
and energy that goes into an all or nothing qualifier and I felt that I prepared well and was able to perform better overall.” Yan has never missed a cut in an LPGA Tour event and is just one of two rookies to do so. She played in several professional events as an amateur, giving her valuable experience that many rookies on tour are struggling to learn. At just 16-years-old, Yan qualified for the Ricoh Women’s British Open and fought to make the cut with a second round 69 after carding an opening round 80. She also qualified for and made the cut in last year’s Evian Championship. After a near win at the China Suzhou Taihu Open in 2013, where she lost the lead late in the final round and finished third, Yan says it left her hungry for more. “Those experiences have definitely helped and shaped me playing in tournaments this year,” Yan said. Her father also continues to be a big help, trading his microphone for a spot on her bag as her caddie on Tour. “I love having him with me when I compete,” Yan said. “His experience as a golf commentator of over twenty years and being a good golfer himself helps me with both my technical and psychological side through his advice. He doesn't push me and lets me decide my own path, which I can't describe how grateful I am for. We make a good team.” The father-daughter team returns to action next week where Yan is in the field at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Eliminating Slow Play in Seletar Country Club By Anthony D’Cruz
W
hat is the cause of slow play? Ask any group and the answer invariably is, “The group ahead.” When golfers actually confront slow play in the flight ahead of them, their tempers rise and their anger is directed against either Tom who takes too many practice swings; Dick who wastes time surveying the green as if he were a pro playing in the Open; or Harry, a 24 handicapper, who cannot decide what club to hit to the green 200 metres away and which is absolutely out of his reach. But if the players ahead are guilty of slow play, could we ourselves be could be guilty of the same offence? In a survey conducted by Golf Digest, 57.8% of golfers rated their own play as fast, and 56.2% golfers rated others as slow. In other words, we tend to fault the others but not ourselves! Whoever is to blame, we have to admit that the vermin of slow play exists in our club, much to the detriment of enjoyable golf, and we must take every measure within our means to eliminate it. Golf Digest defines slow play as any round that takes more than four hours on any course with a Slope Rating under 135 (Slope Rating for Seletar is 143 Blue, 132 White). Fast play is a 3.5 hour round. It takes one hour to swing the club in 18 holes of golf. We walk or ride for about two hours. Everything else is waiting, searching for lost balls, gauging distances, reading the green, etc. How can we, at Seletar, go about to ensure that we finish every round of 18 holes in 4.5 hours or less? We are at the moment plagued by too many 5 to 5.5 hour rounds. Slow play is a curse, and more than three million players worldwide give up golf every year, citing slow play as the main cause.

SELETAR BUZZ • JUL 2015 | AUG 2015
We are fully aware of all the reasons for slow play, and what to do in order to speed up play. Yet we dilly-dally over our putts and choice of clubs, spend an inordinate amount of time cleaning them before meticulously placing them in the correct place in our bag, deciding who is away, and exceeding the five-minute limit searching for a lost ball, preventing our group from keeping up with the flight ahead, all the while ignoring the fact that our flight mates are fuming, and that the flights held up behind us are sweating blood over the unwarranted delay. Has this got to do with the mentality that ‘I am here to enjoy myself and to hell with the others’? The same mentality that results in divot holes not being filled, or the sand not being smoothened after bunker play, or lighting up a cigarette between shots, or hogging the phone instead of playing the shot, or spending too much time in the two halfway houses. After all, “Who cares what problems the golfers behind me face?” Ultimately, eliminating slow play is an individual responsibility. We must adopt the Seletar culture of caring for others. We should make every effort to speed up play. We should at all times keep up with the group ahead, and make every effort to make the round an enjoyable one not only for ourselves, but for the entire course. Then and only then can we overcome the problem of slow play. When this happens we can enter the 19th hole with a smile and join the company of all the other happy faces, even if we have lost the game and the press on the last hole to a lucky opponent.

Caring for our Course I
t is well-known that Seletar Country Club is passionate about nature – so much that we make it part of our mission to protect and enhance the physical and natural environment in which the Club is located. In line with this, the Club puts in a large amount of effort to ensure that our lush natural environment is well-cared for. Our qualified horticulturist and arborist recognised by NParks, Mr Joseph Kwok plays an integral part in this. Entrusted and empowered by the Green SubCommittee to keep our landscape pristine, Joseph and his course maintenance team routinely monitor and trim the growth of plants within the course to maintain the environmental balance of its ecosystem. Why must plants be trimmed? Plants such as the Narrow Leaf Cat Tail, Papyrus and Spike Rush, which are nonnative to the Seletar golf course, were planted among embankments of streams, waterways and ponds to protect them from erosion, absorb excess nutrients in the water and enhance and attract wildlife. However, these plants need to be trimmed periodically to prevent them from being overgrown.
Overgrown Papyrus bush – if left unpruned, it will block the flow of water during a heavy downpour
Trees neatly pruned enable floodlights to illuminate our golf course for returning evening golfers
Likewise, trees which are introduced to the course to attract sunbirds and butterflies also require routine pruning to ensure that light can filter through to the lower plants. Keeping our Waterways Natural Seletar also endeavours to ensure our Waterways are ideal for marine life to flourish underwater. On top of receiving confirmation from the Public Utilities Board that the water quality of the waterways within the Club had met their requirements, the Club has also ceased using water colourants to ensure that the water remains in excellent condition. With such measures and routines in place, we hope that members are able to understand and enjoy the beauty of our golf course and in turn do their part to conserve the environment too.

Goofers VS SG20
Captain Phua Hua Seng together with both teams, Goofers and SG20
O
n Saturday, 28 March 2015, golfing groups Goofers and SG20 had a friendly 4 Ball Better Ball golf tournament at the golf course with 20 players from each group. For this round of the competition, the Goofers decided on the format of play. The wager? Dinner for 40 golfers at the Eagle’s View with the winning group paying 30% and losing group paying 70%! Both groups had donated $4,000 towards charity and decided to wear dark coloured tee shirts during the competition as it was still the mourning period for our Founding Father, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew who passed away on 23 March 2015. As a mark of respect, the golfers observed a minute of silence before dinner started.
On a lighter note, however, Captain Phua graced the dinner with his presence that night. “It’s very heartening to know that even in the midst of this friendly game, our Seletar golfers still spared a thought for the less fortunate and managed to raise money for charity. This is testament of the generous spirit in Seletarians that we should all be proud of,” said Captain of the two golfing teams. Results of the competition were tossed aside as both groups enjoyed their sumptuous dinner and camaraderie with numerous rounds of yam sengs. Needless to say, these golfers are certainly looking forward to the next round of friendly game taking place later in the year. SELETAR BUZZ • JUL 2015 | AUG 2015

Brothers in Bowling B
rothers Keith and Howard Saw are no strangers to the Seletar bowling community. At the age of nine and 10 respectively, Keith and Howard began their bowling journey at the Seletar Bowl as casual players. Over time, they grew to love the sport and their strikes and pin fall count increased as did their thirst for competition. These brothers grew up among the tight-knit Seletar bowling community, where they were first trained by coach John Liaw. Together with their father, bowling convenor Lawrence Saw and mother, in-house league bowler Caroline Heng, the entire family participate regularly in bowling tournaments both in-house and at the inter-club level. Twelve years later, their dedication to the sport has driven them far. Among themselves, these Singapore Sports School alumni have participated in several regional and international accolades including the 2013 World Games, 2014 World Youth Championships, 2014 Asian Games, and 2015 Asian Bowling competition.
Keith Saw (L) and Howard
Saw (R)
And in June, together they reached the pinnacle of their athletic careers – both brothers represented Singapore in the 28th SEA Games for bowling; Keith's second year participating in the regional games and younger brother Howard's first time. What's more, this power duo emerged with gold and silver medals for the Men's Doubles and Men's Trios events respectively.
Just weeks before their bowling tournament for the SEA games, Seletar Buzz caught up with these young men over an email interview to find out their thoughts on their bowling success thus far. When did the both of you start bowling, and what kept you motivated to pursue the sport?
Keith (K): I started bowling at age nine with my brother. I believe it was the sensation of rolling the ball down the lanes and the impact of the ball hitting down all the pins that kept me motivated. Howard (H): I started at 10. I enjoyed the sport at first mainly because of air conditioning. Slowly, the more I bowled, the better I got. The constant improvements in my game kept me fired up to better myself again the next day, a mentality that I have held on till now and is what drives me to be so passionate about the game. We understand that your father, Lawrence Saw, is a bowler as well. How did he influence you in the sport and are there any other family members who are bowlers as well?
K: Our dad usually has golf games on Sunday mornings, so while he played golf we went for bowling with our friends instead. Slowly we began to develop interest in the sport and that is what got us here. Our mother got influenced to bowl mainly because the two of us were always in the bowling centre practising.

SELETAR BUZZ • JUL 2015 | AUG 2015
H: He wanted us to be golfers before we got involved with bowling actually! Dad used to bowl leisurely and took part in company leagues in the past but seeing that we'd much rather go to the bowling centre than the driving range, he introduced us to our first coach, John Liaw. Our mother, Caroline Heng is now an in-house league bowler under our influence.
What are your fondest memories as brothers bowling?
As two brothers in the same sport, is there any kind of sibling rivalry involved when you play, or is all in the name of good sport?
H: Surprisingly, we have never bowled in a doubles event together! However, my fondest memory was when I was standing behind Keith as his acting coach during the stepladder finals in the National Masters Challenge in 2009. Keith won the title and it was one of the proudest moments I have of my brother.
K & H: Definitely! There is always sibling rivalry, competing to see who is the better one. We believe it is good that we have a healthy bit of rivalry because it motivates us to work harder so that we don't lose out to one another. It helps us to improve. K: We trained together in Anderson Primary School, Singapore Sports School and in the National Team. I think it is great to bowl with my brother because I always have a sparring partner. We improved at different rates and at different times but ultimately we improved together. H: We also critique each other's games so that we can further hone our skills. It’s almost like we want to outdo each other but at the same time we are also helping the other out.
K: Before we were in Singapore Sports School, we would train together in Seletar Country Club on Sunday mornings. We would always compete with each other, placing small stakes (for example, loser has to buy drinks for the winner) and have our own simulations of "stepladder finals".
Both of you and your father are quite involved within the Seletar bowing scene. How do you find the bowling community at Seletar?
K & H: The bowling community in Seletar is nothing short of amazing, from my dad as the convenor, Uncle John, Captain Lily Lim, the bowlers and even the bowling counter staff! Everyone is so bonded in Seletar bowling, during the Interclub leagues, when only four bowlers are required to bowl per week, the entire Seletar team literally show up to cheer and support! I think it is apt to say that
SPORTS
e flag proudly before accepting their
Howard and Keith hold up the Singapor
the Seletar bowling community is not just friends through bowling but rather one big family of bowlers. In the same vein, what do you like about the Seletar Bowling Alley?
K: I love the fact that there are only eight lanes and Seletar Country Club is very private. It is the place where I can make corrections to my game without distractions and interference. The lanes and oiling patterns are challenging to me, which helps me to constantly improve myself. H: The bowling centre is one of the most well maintained bowling centres in Singapore. What is unique about the bowling centre is its cosiness, with only eight lanes and a small area to watch TV and chill. Sometimes I go straight to SCC before bowling leagues instead of home to relax! Which other bowling centres can boast of being able to bowl and watch TV at the same time? Do the both of you train there? How does it help improve your skills?
would always share her thoughts and experience with me, to not only prepare me for the leagues, but for international competitions as well. My game has improved because of the care of the two Seletar Country Club coaches that took care of me.
medals
How rigorous was the training leading up to the SEA games?
Representing Singapore in the SEA Games is really an honour! Who would you consider to be most instrumental in your bowling journey up to this point, and why?
K & H: Ever since we were part of the National Team shortlisted for major games, training time and intensity has increased. We have at least three hours of bowling training every day where on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we would have gym after that. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we would have three hours of bowling training in the morning and have another two hours of bowling training after lunch.
K & H: Our parents are the most instrumental in our bowling journey. Dad would be sacrificing his time to fetch us up and down from training to ensure that we have enough rest and energy. There were times when we literally went all over Singapore in a day just for training and then drilling bowling balls and back to training again. Mom would make time to watch us whenever we compete. Without their support, we would not be able to enjoy the luxury of bowling or reach this level of the sport.
K: As much we all want to see our bowling balls hook on the lane, I believe essentially it is the consistency and accuracy of every shot that matters. Hitting straight at the headpin with brute force does not equate to a strike although we learn that in physics “Force is equivalent to the mass multiplied by acceleration”. Rolling the ball in between pin 1 and 3 (the pocket) would be a better way to go.
Any tips to achieve a perfect consistent strike?
H: Use the arrows and dots to create a line for an easier target instead of the pins.
K & H: Yes, we started bowling in Seletar Country Club with the coach of our current Adult team, John Liaw. It was great to have the opportunity to work with Uncle John and we had our fundamentals taught by him. He would keep pushing us to work harder and insisted that we get our basics right before we can start bowling games. We have to owe our success to his teachings. K: As a youth bowler representing Seletar Country Club in the Youth Inter-club League, I also had the chance to be under the care of Regina Lau. Aunty Regina

It’s all good in the bowling family
S
eletar Bowlers geared up for a night of jigsaw puzzles and karaoke fun during their very own Bowling League Victory Dinner on Sunday, 3 May 2015. The dinner itself felt like a gathering among close friends. Indeed they were, as this community of Seletar Bowlers have played together and competed among each other in friendly tournaments for years. This time several of the bowlers came gamely dressed in their team t-shirts, geared up to compete in a series of games designed to test not their bowling prowess but singing skills instead. One representative was selected from each group to compete in a karaoke competition, and the winner was decided through votes from the audience itself. Who knew there could be so many talented singers among these sportsmen? In the end, Jessie Fu walked home as the overall champion.

We won!
Next, the teams were pitted against each other once again to challenge who could complete a scrambled jigsaw puzzle within the shortest amount of time. The twist – teams had to scavenge for missing pieces among the piles from other teams as well! At the end of the night, both Sports Chairman Alvin Khoo and Bowling Convener Lawrence Saw awarded medals and trophies for winning teams and individuals for the 26th In-House Annual Bowling League. Needless to say, cheers rang out from the crowd as the overall winning team Tiger Shark received their gold medal medals and challenge trophy. Congratulations bowlers! Till the next tournament!

eletar’s 9-Pin Tap Masters event which was held on 31 May 2015 was as usual well-supported by the Club’s tight-knit community of bowlers.
Several participants young and old alike showed up at the Seletar Bowl to take part in the exclusive members’ event. And while at first the venue was roaring with life and laughter as friends caught up with each other, as soon as the game started, all that could be heard was the rumble of the balls across the lanes and the crash of pins falling. At the end of the tournament both Lily Lim and Marcus Lian brought home trophies as champions for their respective categories. What a wonderful game! See you at the next bowling tournament!

Badminton with Jeffrey D
id you know that badminton first originated during the 1800s in India? Then under the British colonial rule, the sport was first named Battledore and Shuttlecock, before it changed to Ball Badminton, and finally simplified to its modern name, badminton. Today, the sport is well-loved by Singaporeans, so we caught up with one of our members, Jeffrey Wong, who rented the courts at ITE College Central via the Club to see what he thought of the game. How often do you play badminton and who do you usually play with? I usually play twice a month if times allow, and usually with friends. What drew you to the sport, and when & how did you begin playing? I was drawn to badminton simply to create company bonding. I began just a few months ago with quite a number of colleagues who were also interested in playing. Any unforgettable memories while playing badminton? I love witnessing the teamwork of the staff at play when on the court. Singles or doubles – which do you prefer and why? Both. It really depends on the individual skill set. What do you look for in an ideal badminton court? Air-conditioning, good lighting, vending machines and shower facilities.

Fantabulous Fishing Fun! T
he Seletar Water Sports Centre was buzzing with activity on Saturday, 20 June 2015 when the Club hosted its annual Fishing Fiesta after a year’s hiatus. There were loads of activities for both adults and kids to enjoy, such as molly fishing, prawning and kayaking. Still, fishing at the golf course pond was definitely the star event of the evening. We’re sure many members who attended can vouch that nothing is more relaxing than throwing a line out into the water while picnicking on the grass. As the sun slowly began setting, a tantalising BBQ feast was laid out for all to enjoy. And while parents were busy fishing away, the children participated in their own little colouring contest.
First catch of the
evening! A 2.7kg
Toman.
Look ma, I caught a prawn!
It was just after dusk when one of our participants, Alif Djohan, reeled in the winning catch of the night: a whopping 17.27kg Patin! The fish was so huge and heavy that even the weighing scale could not measure it and judges had to use a digital one instead. Congratulations Alif on the "ginormous" catch and we hope everyone had a great time! BBQ delights for all to devour

ittle Seletarians were in for a treat during the June school holidays as they participated in an exciting robotics workshop held at Kingfisher I and II. Designed for children aged eight to 12 years, and conducted by Robotics Connection, this workshop exposed the little ones to the basics of robotics programming in a fun and interactive way. The cosy class size allowed for personal instruction. What’s more, each participant even got a hands-on experience by building their own robot with the exclusive Lego Mindstorms NXT parts worth $500 each and remote controller. Our young engineers even learned to programme their robots to move easily and play a game of soccer! At the end of the day all participants left enriched and wishing they could bring home those robots… a Christmas present, perhaps?

How to Make Cake Pops Ingredients:
• 1 box of cake mix, or a premade butter or marble cake • Frosting • Lollipop sticks • Chocolate bar or candy melts • Styrofoam or flower sponge • Mini chocolate chips, chocolate rice, or rainbow sprinkles (for decoration)
Instructions:
1. Use your hands to crumble the cake into fine crumbs. 2. Add small amounts of frosting into the bowl of cake crumbs and mix well. Stop adding the frosting when the mixture starts feeling like play dough. 3. Use a milk powder or metal scoop to scoop the dough and shape them to size. This will make sure that all the cake pops are of the same size. 4. Place the cake pops on a tray parchment paper and leave them in the fridge for 15 to 20 minutes. 5. In the meantime, microwave your chocolate bar or candy melts for 30 seconds, then keep stirring until it forms a smooth liquid consistency.
6. Take the cake pops out of the fridge and leave them on a counter for 5 minutes 7. Insert a lollipop stick into each cake pop then dip them into the bowl of melted chocolate or candy. 8. Decorate your chocolate by sprinkling your chocolate chips or rainbow sprinkles. 9. Stick the cake pops in the Styrofoam or flower sponge to dry and they’re ready to eat!
