FIRST WORDS

Chairman’s Message Dear Members,

W

e just had our 27th Annual General Meeting on 31 July and I would like to thank all who joined us for sparing the time.

For the benefit of those who could not join us, I had shared that we hope to receive an update on the land lease renewal from the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) in the next few months. Once we have the figures, we will be able to draft a financial plan to fund the land lease premium and Club upgrading project, which will be presented to members at an Extraordinary General Meeting. In the meantime, we are making preparations by consolidating members’ input for the Strategic Master Plan and discussing them with our consultant to draft upgrading plans for the club.

Congratulations Captain! Let me take this opportunity to share a piece of good news with you. One of our key MC members, Captain Phua Hua Seng, was recently awarded the Pingat Bakti Masyarakat (PBM), the Public Service Medal, on National Day for his contributions to the community. It is a well-deserved recognition as, even in Seletar, we know Captain’s amazing capacity for helping the underprivileged. Each year, Captain goes the extra mile in our annual Seletar Mercedes-Benz charity golf events and it is no different this year as he rallied his sub-committee and members to raise funds for the Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner. On behalf of Seletar Country Club MC members, management, staff and members, I would like to congratulate Captain on the award.

Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner @ Seletar Our annual charity golf takes a different stride this year as we commemorate the nation’s 50th Birthday. In view of SG50, we are taking the opportunity to recognise our Pioneer Generation Singaporeans who have contributed so much to the building of our nation. A total of 250 Pioneer Generation Singaporeans living within our community including senior citizens on Public Assistance and ComCare support programmes were invited to dinner on 4 September, where they were presented with $300 hong baos sponsored by our Seletar members, and goody bags provided by our sponsors. I am pleased to know that response was overwhelming and many members came forth to fund the hong baos. It gave me much pride to witness the enduring and generous Seletar spirit in action.

Getting Ready to Party Aside from the Appreciation Dinner, Seletar’s social calendar is simply bustling with activity for these two months. With the Oktoberfest, Mid-Autumn Festival and Halloween all lined up, the staff are getting

FIRST WORDS

ready for Seletarians to kickstart a series of festive year end celebrations. Details for our year-end big bang is out and this year’s theme is inspired by the popular 1970’s series, the Love Boat. I am sure you remember the fun they used to have so come join us as we sail our very own “cruise” party. Details are on page 33 of this magazine. We will also be holding our New Members’ Night on 11 September. I look forward to welcome our new members to the Seletar family.

Operational Updates On a more serious note, I would like to give my thanks to our members who have been patient with the Management as we battled the mosquito outbreak which occurred in June. During this time, we doubled the frequency and intensity of fogging and misting, eliminated all breeding sites and provided members with insect repellent at the Terrace and Tavern. With help from PUB, NEA and our pest control contractor, we have seen tremendous improvement since 16 July. Nonetheless, I would like to remind members we cannot guarantee an insect-free environment considering our closeness to nature, however I would like to assure members that the Management are not resting on their laurels and are monitoring the situation closely. Our main priority is of course to keep Seletar free of any mosquito breeding sites. In the meantime, the Management continues to encourage members to be suitably covered if you are prone to any insect bites.

As part of the Customer Satisfaction Programme, plans are already in place to continue training our staff – especially those at the front line – and use it as a framework to make quick and effective improvements to our service. We seek our members’ continued support for our staff by giving constructive feedback and complimenting them when they do well. In the same vein I would like to congratulate the SeleSTAR Service Champions of the last quarter. Keep up the great work and continue to give your best!

Seletar Water Sports Centre Finally, to inject greater vibrancy to the Seletar Water Sports Centre, the Sports Sub-Committee has several projects in the pipeline. These include reaching out to members and neighbouring communities to join our bi-weekly Ez-Breezy water sports sessions, introducing dinghy paddling, and hosting major water sports events. The Seletar Speed Crossing, which we will be co-organising with the Singapore Sailing Federation, will take place next year and is expected to attract participation from the nation’s top windsurfers. I hope members will support this exciting new event and many more to come as we develop Seletar’s colourful and diverse community.

Customer Satisfaction Member satisfaction is of utmost importance to us and something that we hope to cultivate into a culture at Seletar.

Khoo Teng Chye Chairman

CLUB NEWS

Congratulations Captain! D

uring Singapore’s 50th National Day, Captain Phua Hua Seng was conferred the Pingat Bakti Masyarakat, the Public Service Medal, for his contributions to the community. Even within the club, Captain has been an integral figure in helping to raise money for the Club’s charity events as Chairman of the organising committee for the Seletar Mercedes-Benz Charity Open (SCO) and this year’s Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner @ Seletar. Under his direction, the Club managed to raise over $800,000 for last year’s SCO. In 2013, he also helped to raise $288,000 for the inaugural Seletar-SportCares Foundation Fundraising event, which went towards providing underprivileged youth with sports training, educational support and mentoring. “Captain Phua personally reaches out to each member and makes an effort to unify golfing groups to support Club activities,”

New Golf Buggies G

olfers, we have great news for you!

said Alvin Khoo, chairman of SG20, one of several golfing groups within Seletar. Captain has made a deep impact not only on the Club’s members but also to those around him. As part of the Advisory Committee for Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School and a patron of the Chong Pang Community Centre, his contributions have made a difference to many individuals and changed the community as a whole. “I would like to congratulate Captain Phua for being conferred the PBM. His award affirms his generosity with time and effort to the community at large. His public spiritedness is also clearly demonstrated in our Club. Well done, Captain for the well-deserved award!” said Chairman Khoo Teng Chye of Captain’s Phua achievement. We at Seletar are certainly proud to have him here. Congratulations Captain Phua on being conferred the medal!

Success! We’ve Kept Mozzies at Bay T

he club has been carrying out numerous measures in our battle against the mosquitoes and sandflies that have tormented members, guests and staff at the club, especially at the Tavern and Terrace. In the past month, based on the feedback gathered from members, guests and staff at the Tavern and Terrace, the situation has improved significantly. While we are relieved that the joint intensive efforts of NEA, PUB, our pest control contractor and club management have begun to show positive results, we urge members and guests to continue taking the following precautions when they visit the club, especially if they are particularly vulnerable to insect bites: a. Wear clothes which provide adequate cover b. Use insect repellents which are readily available at our counters The Management will continue to monitor the situation and take any necessary action to keep our environment safe and comfortable.

A pre-meeting catch-u

Chairman Khoo Teng Chye commenced the meeting with an opening address which thanked various sub-committees, members and staff for their efforts toward the many Club achievements over the past year. These include raising over $800,000 during the Seletar Mercedes-Benz Charity Open; maintaining the excellent condition of the Club’s golf course; organizing many successful events throughout the year; and driving the History & Heritage project and Customer Satisfaction Programme.

Land Lease Renewal Moving forward, Chairman Khoo also informed members that the Club had yet to receive news pertaining to its land lease renewal, which is to be extended until 2040. However, once such information has been received, the Management Committee will work on a financial plan which will then be presented to members at an Extraordinary General Meeting. In the meantime, the Club has already started drafting a Strategic Master Plan for the Club’s future upgrading projects.

Financial Plan The meeting then adopted the minutes of the last Annual General Meeting and passed the Statement of Accounts for FY 2014-2015, which was presented by Honorary Treasurer Bobby Eng. The Annual Report and the Accounts was then approved by the General Meeting.

Looking dapper, gentlemen! Members subsequently also approved the capital expenditure of $911,500 incurred for the current financial year. This amount will be used for Development & Maintenance projects, sports, social, IT and security equipment, turf machinery, furniture replacement at the Main Clubhouse lobby and massage chair replacement. For the ensuing financial year which ends on 31 March 2016, Loke Lum & Partners was reappointed as the Club’s auditors. Finally, questions from members were also skillfully answered by the Management Committee. The Club thanks all members who attended the Annual General Meeting, and for nurturing a vested interest in Seletar Country Club. Upon the meeting’s conclusion, all members enjoyed a delightful buffet spread.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

101 and Going Strong M

rs Mangalesvary Ambiavagar is surprisingly sprightly for a centenarian. The 101-year-old personally greeted us at her gate when Seletar’s History & Heritage team came to visit her in late May this year, and walked unassisted around her home in Telok Kurau. According to her, many have asked for the secret to her longevity but in truth there is no secret at all – Mrs Ambiavagar lives life as she pleases. The former principal of Raffles Girls’ Primary School resides only with her daughter, Indra, and their domestic helper. Post-retirement, she believed not to fall behind on time and technology. She taught herself to use the computer and eventually published a book on her memoirs called Three Score Years and Twenty at the age of 82. And while many younger than her have fallen prey to the forgetfulness that comes with old age, her mind and memories remain sharp and unfragmented, and her recollections as Seletar Country Club’s first Lady Captain are crystal clear.

First Days at Seletar

“I used to wear sarees when practising at the driving range,” she recalled, “but of course when I was at the golf course, I wore the proper attire.” The year was 1971, when Seletar Base Golf Course (SBGC) – as Seletar Country Club was called then — was first opened to the public, and Mrs Ambiavagar was in her fifties. “I didn’t join at first. But my son Mahendran told me, ‘Don’t stay at home. When Papa goes golfing, it’s a whole day affair. You won’t see him.' So I joined as well,” she remembered.

12

SELETAR BUZZ • SEP 2015 | OCT 2015

September 1974: Mrs Ambiavagar (first row, second from left) with some of Seletar’s lady golfers.

Together with Seletar’s first Captain, Joe Goh, as well as Yap Ser Chuan, Paul Gomez & Topsy D’Cruz, she was among the first Singaporean members of the Club. Golfers still comprised mainly members of the British Royal Air Force. Amazingly, golf was a self-taught sport for our first Asian Lady Captain. “Just take a stick and hit it!” she laughed, recalling her first days as a member at Seletar, “But the caddy boys did give hints sometimes.” According to long-time member Paul Gomez, Mrs Ambiavagar also had an extraordinary swing which developed into her signature. He said, “She would swing in a way that would always send the ball very straight.” “One of the RAF ladies even went all the way to walk with me at the golf course to find out what it was in my funny swing which always drove the ball so straight,” she admitted, “but not very far. I could not negotiate the length of the course.”

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Facing Challenges

Still, Lady Captainship was not as straightforward as her swing. One of the first challenges she faced was standardising the ladies’ play according to the St Andrew’s golfing regulations. “The British ladies felt that they were leaving a team that was fast adopting an Australian style, when they wanted to establish their own British heritage,” she explained. A year after she joined SBGC as member and after the British Ladies’ Committee observed Mrs Ambiavagar’s play, they appointed Mrs Ambiavagar as Lady Captain. “They held a committee meeting, and afterwards quietly came to me and told me they were going to train me to play while keeping to the St Andrew’s tradition. So that was how I became Lady Captain." “So I studied. I looked up the rules and made some changes that would suit the Club, and eventually we got going.” As expected, there was opposition when Mrs Ambiavagar first shouldered her responsibilities as Lady Captain. She remembered an incident when a group of lady golfers was caught breaking the rules while playing. To reinforce these rules, Mrs Ambiavagar put up a circular at the changing room wall referring to the incident with the names of those who had broken the rules. Needless to say, the notice was met with much furore by the identified golfers. “They threatened to sue me for putting their names up on the toilet wall,” she said. Changing rooms were small at the time, and shared the same spaces as the women’s toilets. Still, Mrs Ambiavagar stood her ground, even when they called a meeting to discuss the matter. “I was told that there was going to be fireworks. Even the men were there waiting for a fight between the women,” she chuckled.

From left, Marcom Chairman John Tan, Mrs Ambiavagar, Paul Gomez and Anthony D’Cruz But the men went home disappointed. The issue was expertly handled by Mrs Ambiavagar, who reasoned to the lady golfers, and the matter was quickly dropped. By the time the ladies had their first tournament, there was no longer any competition and from then on it was all smooth sailing.

The Best Feet Ever Seen!

An avid golfer who counted members like Topsy D’Cruz, Irene Lim and Sharon Grun among the best she had played with, Mrs Ambiavagar loved her time on Seletar’s then nine-hole golf course. Although the Club held social events for members, she rarely frequented them (except for Christmas events) claiming that she could not dance well. But the golf course was her dance floor; according to her, Mrs Ambiavagar was on the greens at least three times a week, even after her five-year stint as Lady Captain. After about 20 years of golf, Mr and Mrs Ambiavagar finally retired their golf clubs when they were well into their eighties. Still, all those years of golfing certainly paid off. At the age of 101, walking is no problem for her. She said, “Two years ago, when I went for some foot reflexology, the reflexologist asked me how my feet were in such good condition. I replied to her that I played golf for years. She told me that out of thousands of feet saw, mine were the best she had seen!”

GOLF

Johnson Goes Pro A

ll eyes were trained on Johnson Poh as he readied himself to make a swing on Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course in June during the much-awaited SEA Games. Representing Singapore, 24-year-old Johnson spent more than half his life training and playing golf – more than many of his other competitors. This year saw the Seletar golfer receiving his fourth SEA Games silver medal. It also marked a significant highlight in his career. In July, Johnson made his debut as a professional golfer at the Boustead Golf Open. Seletar Buzz catches up with him on his thoughts after recently turning pro. Your entire family seems very passionate about golf. Your father, Poh Ah Hai is a golf instructor and your sister Joey is part of the Seletar Ladies’ Team. How did they play a part in your golfing development? My father has been a professional golfer since 1978 and has taken part in many golf tournaments in the region. There was once he brought me to a prize-giving ceremony when I was five years old and I remember he was the champion! He brought me to the driving range and taught me how to swing when I was 10 and I fell in love with the sport ever since. My father has always been very supportive and patient in teaching me. Never once did he raise his voice or scold me when I played badly. He even made my mum learn golf too, so that she could bring me to the golf course and drive me around in the buggy when I was still underaged.

SELETAR BUZZ • SEP 2015 | OCT 2015

You’ve been a Seletarian since 2011, and represented the Club as part of our Premier Team in several tournaments. How do you feel about the Seletar family? I am very happy to have led the Premier team last year when we emerged as Champions of the Inter-Club League. As a team we all have a strong desire to win, but if we do not do very well on that particular day, we encourage each other to improve as a whole. This makes the Seletar team very united and well-bonded, something not many other teams have. I love every aspect of the club. The staff are friendly; changing rooms and other facilities are clean and relaxing; the course very wellmanicured; and the food and ambience at the Terrace is always nice. I am very proud to be a Seletarian and will always be! As long as the club needs me, I am more than willing to be there. You made your pro debut at the Boustead Golf Open in early July coming in with an admirable score for a pro rookie. What are your goals within the next five years of your career? My goal for the next five years in my professional career is to make it to the Asian Tour and to be in the top 20 Order of Merit consistently every year. What is the biggest lesson you learned so far in golf? To be patient and stick to game plans I set for the tournament. Once I lost patience and tried too hard to win and in the end I played horribly. Last question: most of us know you as Johnson the golfer. What is Johnson like off the golf course? Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know about! I am a car person. I love driving and I can drive very well! I love to read car magazines and often visit the the SGCarMart website to check out the latest models. My friends are always impressed with how fast I can park the car!

Seletar Visits Segamat

Greetings from Segamat!

O

ur Seletarian Golfers were treated to a savoury feast with the king of fruits during our friendly game with Segamat Golf Club at their home ground on Sunday, 5 July 2015. What’s more, we were even gifted with a special durian opener from Segamat Golf Club’s patron, Tan Sri Dato Tan Beng Tong. The device itself was designed and produced by Segamat member Mr Lai Khien Wan. This tool prises open durians safely and completely hassle-free. Ingenious! The Club certainly made full use of it during our own Captain’s and Lady Captain’s prize later that month. Captain and Mr Yik Nam Yeong receiving the unique durian opener from Tan Sri Dato Tan.

S

everal of our senior golfers certainly put our younger players to shame with their verve and vitality during the Seletar Senior Golfer’s Championship on 8 July 2015. A total of 115 golfers took part in the game, with Mr Ong King Sin being the oldest participant at the age of 83. Age was certainly just a number for these members – their swings rivalled even some of our junior golfers! At 78, as one of the oldest participants in the league, Mr Anthony D’Cruz's passion for golf still burns bright. “I love golf, and I love exercise, and to smell the flowers and hear the birds sing. The companionship – meeting lots of people and making banter – is certainly better than sitting at home and watching TV,” says Mr D’Cruz when asked what keeps him motivated to golf.

t was a durian feast on Saturday, 11 July!

Kindly sponsored by members Khoo Lam Loong, Ernest Lee, Piak Boon Seng, Pour Beng Teck and Koh Chan Seng, golfers indulged in a glorious feast of delectable mao shan wang durians at the Starter’s Hut just before the game commenced. We’re pretty sure that durian goodness kept everyone’s spirits high during the game, with all the wacky poses for photo-taking before teeing off. Durian feasting continued well into the night as golfers brought up even more durians to accompany their buffet dinner and drinks. The game and dinner itself was our Club Captain’s and Lady Captain’s way of showing their gratitude for golfers who form a great part of the Seletar family.

Mmm… these

durians are he

“I’m truly grateful to all our fellow members for their strong support, as well as their care and concern for the golf course and Club,” said Captain Phua Hua Seng of the event. Said Lady Captain Angelia Lim, “Thank you to all our members for all of their support for our golf events throughout the year, including all the lady golfers, who have shown much enthusiasm for many of the events. We hope to count on your support for the many exciting games to come.” Results: Position Winner First Runner-Up Second Runner-Up

Wong Kan Seng Trophy

Clear skies greet Team Sport Singapore and Team Seletar

T

he annual Wong Kan Seng Trophy game and lunch was held on Sunday, 2 August 2015 with a total of 35 players. A tradition at Seletar Country Club, this yearly affair commemorates the Club’s roots with Sport Singapore. Members of the Club and staff from Sport Singapore engage in a friendly game on the course. Mr Wong Kan Seng, the event’s namesake and honoured guest, was of course present for the event, which was held under sunny clear skies. This year’s tournament saw Team Seletar team winning with a total of 372 points, but during such an occasion, forging friendships and enjoying fantastic company was more important than the competition.

O

ur Seletar golf course was dotted with red and white as our patriotic members dressed gamely for our Wong Hung Khim Trophy on National Day itself. This year’s golf tournament was an extra special one – it also celebrated Singapore’s grand 50th birthday. Perhaps it was the spirit of National Day, but almost all of our golfers were extra patriotic on that day, with many making special effort to wear Singapore-themed outfits. Even Mr Wong Hung Khim and his wife were dressed in Singapore colours!

Red, white and some national day pride. You can’t get any more patriotic than this!

hat could be better than sun, slides and swimming on a hot Saturday afternoon? Bubbles! That and more was exactly what our little ones enjoyed during the Swimming Carnival that was held on 4 July 2015. On top of several races in the water for all of the 80 young participants, kids also had a spectacular time bouncing and a sliding at the inflatable water playground. This year, the Club also held a special Family Olympics, where family teams had to negotiate an obstacle course and battle it out in a pool kayaking Tug O’ War!

Wheee! Nothing’s

One of the highlights was a dazzling performance by CJ the Bubble Girl, who drew an ecstatic young crowd with her slew of magical bubbles. From the races to the lucky draw (which included a snazzy skate scooter), we had a great carnival this year and we hope our participants and their family did too!

An Evening to Remember

A breathtaking view like none other

oto on the water

A unique group ph

G

reat company, calm waters and an amazing sunset view. Seletar Buzz catches up with Mdm Chew Boon Sym, who spent an evening out with her family members during our sunset kayaking session in July.

Look ma! We’re sta

nding on our kayak!

What made you and your family consider joining this session? Our family enjoys outdoor activities especially if it’s around nature. Combining exercise, bonding with family and friends, and beautiful scenery seemed like a perfect outing and we were not disappointed. It seems like your family had loads of fun! How did you and your family find the sunset kayaking session? Yes, we had a lot of fun and laughter. It was good that we were first given instructions on safety rules and how to kayak before we started. The instructor was also on hand to point out interesting sights. We played many games while kayaking too and we even tried kayaking while standing up! Some of us fell into the water too… that was fun!

Just regular sit-down kayaking now... Don't want to fall off!

Any unforgettable or funny moments during the session? There were many unforgettable and funny moments, from when we played games together or when we had a quiet moment to just enjoy the scenery & sunset. All in all I would highly recommend Sunset Kayaking for the family! Sunset kayaking is all about witnessing the golden hour out on the water. How would you describe the scenery while you were out on the reservoir? Beautiful!

P

otong ice cream, ice balls and good ol’ satay on charcoal grill. The celebration of the Seletar Tavern’s 10th anniversary was a throwback to nostalgic kampong days and drew a full house at both the Terrace and Tavern on 15 August. The previously empty pavilion used for events and function was transformed into the Tiger Tavern and opened in 2005 with the support of Asia Pacific Breweries. Today, what many call the Seletar Tavern is the go-to chill-out makan and watering hole for members to wind down after work or a round of golf. It seemed apt then that those who came to celebrate the Tavern’s 10th birthday comprised mainly of its regular patrons. With beer flowing and a whole slew of games including the Spicy Satay Challenge, Tavern Pop Quiz and the Ice Ball contest. Members had a ball of a time reminiscing the good old days!
