FIRST WORDS

Chairman’s Message Dear Members,

F

estive greetings! The year has moved swiftly by and before we know it, Christmas and the New Year greets us once more.

Looking back, Seletar has accomplished so much within this year. Firstly, we have attained all six Audubon certificates, which means our golf course is now an official Audubon-certified Cooperative Sanctuary. Our Customer Satisfaction Programme (CSP) which kicked off late last year is going well – we have trained over half of our service staff. As part of the CSP, the SeleSTAR Awards programme has also motivated our staff to provide exemplary service. I would like to express my congratulations to our service champions for the last quarter. Keep up the good work. Next, we shared the joy of our fellow Seletarians, Keith Saw, Howard Saw and Johnson Poh who performed exceedingly well in the SEA Games and brought medals home for Singapore. Our athletes who participated in various interclub games this year have also done the Club proud – Seletar clinched overall third place in the SGA Interclub League, with our golfers being the champions of the premier division. On the bowling front, Doreen Pang came in first runner-up in the Ladies’ Masters and Leonard Leong was placed second runner-up in the Men’s Masters. Our Mixed Adult team also did very well by coming in third place. Congratulations everyone on your achievements! Looking ahead, while we wait for updates from the Singapore Land Authority on our land lease renewal, arrangements are already underway as we draft our Strategic Master Plan to ensure our facilities will be refreshed to last the next 20 years. We will table our proposals at an Extraordinary General Meeting once SLA reverts to us with the lease renewal premium.

FIRST WORDS

A Country Western themed Chairman’s Appreciation Dinner THE SEASON OF GIVING I am pleased to note that while we celebrated the highlights of the year, Seletarians never forgot to spare a thought for those in need. The Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner @ Seletar, our charity event in place of the annual Seletar MercedesBenz Charity Golf, brought many smiles to the faces of our beneficiaries. Thanks to your support, these beneficiaries brought home goody bags and $300 hong baos. My appreciation goes out as well to those who personally rendered their time and efforts to make this event a success. In the same spirit of giving, I urge everyone to adopt a gift at the Boys’ Brigade drive during our Christmas Light Up and bring cheer to the less fortunate.

GIVING THANKS This season also reminds us of the things we should be thankful for, especially those who have contributed so much to the Club. My thanks go out to the various committee members who spent many hours reviewing and contributing their ideas for the Strategic Master Plan; members who worked tirelessly to organize events and activities for the Club; and of course those who strove to ensure the course maintains its excellent condition.

With Guest of Honour Mr K Shanmugam at the tar Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner @ Sele

Thank you as well to our dedicated staff who worked hard day in day out to keep Seletar an exciting and enjoyable place for all of us. Most of all, thank you to all of our members who make this Club vibrant by participating in our events and using our facilities. In this period of celebration, we look forward to hosting your special moments, from festive dinners to weddings and anniversaries. And now that the year is at its end, let us party with a grand cruise-themed countdown soiree to welcome the New Year. Happy holidays everyone and let’s sail!

Khoo Teng Chye Chairman

With over 20 years of experience in golf, general operations and event management, our former Golf Manager is back with us again – this time overseeing both golf operations and golf course maintenance.

Khoo’s comprehensive and varied background makes him an asset to the Club, with 24 years of experience in F&B – 19 of them in various Clubs across Singapore. A true blue foodie, he enjoys cooking and quality wines.

It’s been a while since you’ve been back at Seletar. How has the Club changed since the last time you were here? One thing is for sure, the course is definitely in great shape and I must applaud Captain and the Green Sub-Committee for providing valuable guidance and leadership. There is so much energy flowing in the team and it gives me great pleasure and motivation to be part of it.

As Head of Golf Operations, what is your vision for the Club? I hope to lead a dedicated team of golfing and course maintenance staff to perform, support, execute and manage expectations from all quarters. We hope to be able to grow and contribute to the success of the Club.

What is it about Seletar’s golf course that sets it apart from others? It is a beautiful championship course and the greens are shaping up pretty well. Since coming on board, the praises sung from members and guests about the golf course have been simply overwhelming.

SELETAR BUZZ • NOV 2015 | DEC 2015

Welcome to the Club! What is your mission for F&B in Seletar? Overall food and service quality is very important to me, so I would like to improve that by working on our members’ feedback and training the staff. Of course, through this we will also work on increasing patronage at our outlets.

What can members expect from F&B in the coming year? We are currently working on revamping our menus and refreshing food presentation for various dishes, so members can look out for that.

What is your raison d’etre at work? I aim to ensure members enjoy their dining experience at the Club.

What’s Cooking @ F &B? W

e’re starting afresh! With our new manager on board, here’s what members can expect from our F&B outlets in the coming year.

Service with a Smile The Management is constantly finding new ways to serve members better, so as part of our Customer Satisfaction Programme, our F&B staff has undergone extensive internal and external service training.

Our Secrets to Great Service: Warm Welcomes

We’re big fans of the personal touch when it comes to service. That means greeting our regular customers by name, and making sure our staff are well-versed in your personal preferences. Laksa with extra cockles served at your favourite table? Consider it done.

The Magic Touch

We’re all about going the extra mile for our members, be it getting candles for your loved one’s birthday, or making sure your guests feel right at home in the Club. Tell us how to make your experience at Seletar extraordinary!

Fond Farewells

We would love to have you leave with wonderful memories! Our staff will work to ensure you’ll come back for more.

Eating with Confidence We want to make sure our members and guests indulge in great quality food that is lovingly prepared. The only thing that is more important than good food and great service is cleanliness and hygiene. Thorough food auditing by the world-reknowned SGS as well as our trained in-house fire and food safety officers ensure that you can enjoy your meals with confidence.

Refreshing New Menu We’re revamping our menu! Not to worry, you’ll still see your old favourites but here are some of the yummy new additions you can look forward to: Spiced Beef Burger with Cheddar Cheese The juicy spiced beef patty in this dish packs a punch! An upgrade from our old Plain Beef Burger, this delectable meal is served with fries and coleslaw. Caesar Salad Crunchy Romaine lettuce served with Caesar dressing, buttered croutons, parmesan cheese and bacon. Give this classic salad a try! Planter’s Punch Rumoured to have originated from a planter’s wife in one of the Caribbean islands, the Planter’s Punch is an exquisite combination of dark rum and fruit punch – perfect for a warm night out at the Tavern. Y

ee haw! Sponsors, members and guests had a wild time at the country and western-themed Chairman’s Appreciation Golf & Dinner on 28 August 2015. The event itself was a token of our Chairman, Mr Khoo Teng Chye’s appreciation for all those who have contributed to the Club in one way or another. The day started out as early as lunch time, where golfers were treated to a delectable buffet spread. And after a smooth game at the golf course, everyone headed to the Seletar Room decked out in their rodeo best! It was the first time we had seen so many cowboy hats in one room…

Yup, definitely satiated by the lunch spread!

We’re sure everyone had fun posing for photos at the themed photo booth and being entertained by our members' band, The Young Once. The Western dinner menu was truly satisfying and the hilarious games which ensued after dinner also had many laughing away. We even took the time to celebrate Lady Captain Angelia Lim’s birthday! We hope everyone enjoyed their time during the event and we thank you for your contribution over the years! Looks like Captain's close to finding the wanted lady!

Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner @ Seletar I

t took Singapore 50 years to transform itself from a third-world nation to the modern cosmopolitan city it is today. Good things never come easy, and those years building Singapore were filled with the blood, sweat and tears of Singaporeans – especially our pioneer generation. This year in place of our annual Seletar Mercedes-Benz Charity Golf, the Club decided to honour our pioneer generation with a special appreciation dinner. With the help of Nee Soon GRC, 250 senior citizens, many of whom were on public assistance and ComCare support programmes, were identified to receive a goody bag and a $300 hong bao each. Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Law, graced the event as guest of honour. The charity event was a large undertaking that took months to prepare, and members played a huge role in making it possible. Seletar members contributed to the hong baos and our home-grown band The Young Once entertained the pioneer generation guests for the night. Volunteers comprising lady golfers even aided in seeing to all of the guests' needs, which gave the dinner a personal touch. Suffice to say seeing the smiles on many of the beneficiaries’ faces made all efforts worth it.

Mr Shanmugam distributing hon g baos to the beneficiaries

“I would like to thank Seletar Country Club for generously inviting the senior citizens to the event, and I hope the hong baos and goody bags given will in one way or another help these beneficiaries,” said Mr Henry Foo, Chairman of the Chong Pang Citizens' Consultative Committee Community Development and Welfare Fund. We look forward to organising next year’s charity event! Enjoying the entertainment for the night

F

ollowing the Pioneer Generation Appreciation Dinner @ Seletar (PGAD), on 5 September 2015 the Club held a Sponsor’s Game & Dinner as a way of thanking the various donors and event sponsors for their generous contributions to the charity event.

Swinging with all his might!

Donors for the hong bao packets distributed to the beneficiaries during the PGAD comprised members and golfing groups such as S@S, SG20 and Goofers. The PGAD event sponsors comprised Daimler South East Asia Pte Ltd, Cycle & Carriage Pte Ltd, YHI Corporation (Singapore) Pte Ltd and Seletar Zhong Yuan Hui. Everyone enjoyed the friendly golf game and many praised the condition of the course. When golfers retired to the Seletar Room in the evening for dinner, they were treated to a tantalizing buffet spread and lively musical entertainment by the Seletar Band, complete with guest singers from the audience.

Let me give you a hug!

Captain Phua Hua Seng, chairman of the organising committee also took the time to say a few heartfelt words of thanks to the various donors and sponsors. “To see such happiness from the beneficiaries during the event was priceless. It would not have been possible without the continued support of our event sponsors, member donors and volunteers. I am truly appreciative of such generosity from these valued individuals and corporations,” said Captain Phua. Thank you to all who contributed to the event in one way or another! Thumbs up! It was a great game

GOLF

A Good Walk Spoilt

By Anthony D’Cruz

A tale from a Seletar golfer

I

t was a glorious morning. The sun had just risen, and the leaves were dancing as a gentle breeze rustled through them. Inhaling the pure morning air, I prepared to tee off at the first hole. In front of me was spread the picturesque stretch of a dew-covered green fairway protected by leafy trees on the left and a menacing bunker on the right. Ignoring the water that severed the fairway 70 metres from the tee box, I released the club head at speed, and the sharp crack of the impact of ball against titanium saw the drive climbing into the sky and landing smack in the centre, a mere 7-iron away from the pin. With Walter Hagen’s advice, to "be sure to smell the flowers along the way" ringing in my head I tripped along down the decline, across the bridge and up the incline towards the white speck that lay so invitingly on the dew-decked fairway, waiting to be smacked towards the green. But wait. Why was the ball sitting so high, as if perched on a tee? To my horror I realised that it was sitting on a lump of divot left behind by a careless person playing ahead of me. Behind the divot, like a giant’s toothless mouth yawning at the sky, was a huge divot hole, unrepaired. Undeterred, the gentle breeze fanning my cheeks, and still in good humour, I took a swipe at my ball. Inevitably I hit more earth than ball, and saw it scuttling into the bunker guarding the green. After replacing the divot in the gaping hole and repairing it with sand from my canister, I hurried up the slope towards the bunker. What I saw next drove away all song from my heart, replacing it with fuming rage. For the sand where my ball was laid must have been the battle ground for elephants. So badly was it trampled upon that not a square meter of level sand could I discern, and my ball lay in an impossible indentation, a mess

of footprints. With my sand iron I heaved and heaved and after several attempts I managed to extract the ball from its grave. A picture book drive had been followed by several swats, and I now lay eight, and still not anywhere near the pin. After raking the bunker and making it playable for the next player who might fall within, and after three putts over and through unrepaired pitch marks, every vestige of the joy of smelling the flowers had been driven out of my being. Instead of inhaling the life-giving bouquet of flowers I found myself gasping in fumes of bitterness and outrage. The next eight holes did nothing but exacerbate the exasperation boiling within me. I was the victim of flights ahead of me, golfers that either were ignorant of the etiquette of golf or callously uncaring of the plight of those following them. A day that had promised a joyful communion with nature had turned out to be a hellish trudge through a minefield of unfilled divots, unraked bunkers, unrepaired pitch marks and drag marks created by spikes scuffling with the green. Who were these culprits who had mangled the course as if determined to ensure that those following them would be guaranteed of a day in inferno instead of a heaven of nine holes? Whoever they were, was there a means to prevent the recurrence of such a catastrophe? Was Mark Twain specifically alluding to such an experience when he described golf as "a good walk spoilt"? My morning golf had most certainly been spoilt, and I thought of the personnel maintaining the course. I wondered what their impressions were, as they laboriously repaired the damage, of the miscreants who defiled the very tract that was the source of their pleasure. I was quite certain that they would be bewildered, as I certainly was.

Remember to repair divots & rake bunkers during play!

Expanding Horizons: Simba Scouts Explore Seletar Waters By Ms Norhaiza, Scout Teacher METTA School

Scouts unite!

Are we seeing double?

Lunchtime! Dig in!

Erm… I think you’re supposed to paddle in the water…

O

n Saturday, 29 August 2015, the Special Needs scouts from Metta Simba Scout Group were fortunate to get the opportunity to try kayaking at Seletar Water Sports Centre (SWSC). It was jointly organized by the Seletar Lapwing Sea Scouts, led by MAJ Tan Hua Chiow, and Seletar Country Club. The event started with the flag-breaking where the scouts wore their scout uniforms. The Metta Simba scouts were given a warm welcome by MAJ Tan upon their arrival at the centre, and were given a mini tour around SWSC by the Rover scouts. After changing into their swimwear, Major Tan briefed the scouts on water safety. The Metta Simba scouts were taught the technique of safe kayaking. Initially, they faced some challenges to even reach the nearest point. However, after some practice, they managed to paddle and began enjoying kayaking around Lower Seletar Reservoir. After two hours of kayaking and getting a tan, they all had sumptuous packed lunch and interacted with the scout leaders and rovers.

“This event brought smiles, adventure and laughter among our young guests. But more meaningful was a fellow child sharing the joy with another child. So our little hosts have kept their Scout Promise of doing their best duty to God and country,” said MAJ Tan about the afternoon’s activity. The Metta Simba Scouts left SWSC feeling delighted with their first ever kayaking experience. Although the session was draining, they mentioned that they had a wonderful and memorable time and felt very fortunate. They hope to kayak at SWSC again in the near future!

Howdy Cowboys! S

eletarians certainly knew how to party at the Country & Western Dance Night themed bash on 29 August 2015. More than 60 members came down to the event, ranging from the young to the young at heart.

Hey, that guy on the Wanted poster looks strangely famlliar…

True to the Seletar spirit, many were dressed to impress in their checked shirts, jeans, cowboy hats, and boots. The judging panel had a difficult time deciding who to crown as the best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl! The Seletar Room was decked out in line with the Country & Western theme, including a photo booth and props. There was even a Western snack buffet! Our home-grown member's band The Young Once also entertained the audience with toe-tapping, finger-snapping country tunes.

You can call us Seletar’s Bonny & Clyde

The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the dancing. Members and students of the line-dancing class were eager to strut their moves. Some of the older dancers even put their younger counterparts to shame with their sashays and nifty footwork. The night ended on a high note with prizes for the best dancers of the evening. Thanks for coming everyone and we look forward to seeing you at our Seletar countdown bash at the end of this year!

Mooncakes & Lanterns Galore! T

he days which led up to the Club’s annual Mid-Autumn Festival left the organising team at the edge of their seats. Hazy conditions saw the PSI skyrocketing to 300, which barely allowed anyone to see past a hundred metres, let alone go outside. Yet the gods must have smiled upon Seletar as the air miraculously cleared on the day of the event. More than 30 kids and their families participated in the Mid-Autumn Festival on 27 September 2015. The evening was full of laughter and fun activities for both parent and child, from lantern painting to mooncake making. The kids even had a ball of a time during the lantern walk in the golf course under a rare amber moon!

Sending off our wishes to the sky…

In addition to a magician’s performance and a balloon sculpting session, the highlight of the night was setting afloat large colourful lanterns into the sky – a perfect way to end the night. Check out my soon-to-be masterpiece

We love Mid-Autumn Festival!

I made these all by myself!

Entranced by the light…

Delizioso! Kids’ Pizza-Making Class K

ids rule the kitchen! A mini pizza-making session was held at the Sports Complex on 19 September 2015.

The children were taught to make and roll pizza dough from scratch and were given free rein to add the sauce, cheese and their preferred toppings. Needless to say these little chefs had a fun time using toppings to make faces on their pizzas. We hope these kids had fun making pizzas as much as we did teaching them!

Check out our fancy pizzas!

The secret to a good pizza is lots of ham

Yum! Can’t wait to eat this!

Prost! Oktoberfest 2015 H

azy conditions did not deter Seletarians from having a wonderful time at Oktoberfest 2015. This year, for members’ safety, the event was held indoors at Seletar Room with high spirits and flowing beer. The Seletar Room itself was well-decorated with the signature blue and white Oktoberfest checks and buntings. Members who attended enjoyed a German feast, which included the signature pork knuckle and various German sausages, accompanied by – of course – lots of Erdinger!

Err... We’ve got these mops rea

dy in case the beer spills…

Members and their family also participated in several exciting drinking (and eating) games. Our Seletarians can really drink their weight in beer! Kids had plenty of their share of fun too, with a hands-free pretzel-eating competition. We saw some mean hula hooping as well!

Cheers!
