Closure of the Seletar Water Sports Centre
Dear Members First and foremost, on behalf of the Management Committee and Management Team, we would like to wish each and every member a Happy New Year. 2018 will be an exciting year for Seletar Country Club as we prepare for major renovations to the golf course and Club facilities. Management and the Project Redevelopment Committee are working very closely with our golf course designer to finalise the design details, as well as with the respective agencies to ensure all necessary permits and clearances are obtained to move the redevelopment project forward. In the meantime, mobilisation and construction works on the golf course are expected to commence from October this year. Our main priority is to keep the project within its approved budget and deliver the best quality outcome within an appropriate timeline. More information will be updated progressively and we assure members that we will do our best to minimise disruption to activities. Some inconvenience is inevitable and we seek your cooperation on the matter.

The Seletar Water Sports Centre (SWSC), which first opened its doors as the Seletar Sailing Centre in 2004, has been a unique feature of our Club for over 10 years. It has been a facility much enjoyed by both members and the public alike, and allowed us to be one of the few clubs in Singapore where members can both golf and sail. Home to the Seletar Lapwing Sea Scouts, countless family bonding sessions were held on its inviting kampong-like grounds. Aside from watersports activities, events like the annual fishing competition, lantern festival celebrations, children drawing competitions, bonfires and outdoor BBQs soon became signatures of our WSC. The successful revival of the Seletar Speed Crossing saw the first Stand-Up Paddling race being held at the Lower Seletar Reservoir in 2015. Our Seletar Voyagers Kayaking Programme also benefited more than 250 underprivileged ITE students with sports mentoring programmes. Unfortunately though we may hold great sentimental value for the SWSC, we have to give it up for Singapore’s 150km round-island green corridor. We had an

enjoyable 13-year run and it is time to return it to the government for the greater good of Singaporeans. We expect this to take place sometime towards the third quarter of this year, and will keep members updated on the progress.
ITEs, polytechnics and universities to train interns in various aspects of club management – from frontline F&B service to golf, maintenance, and marketing communications. This is our contribution towards building the talent of our younger generation workforce in the hospitality and leisure industry.
Celebrating the Year of the Dog We have lined up exciting activities for you to celebrate the Year of the Dog with your Seletar family – starting with a special feature on the winners of the “Cutest Dog” contest that took place last November and December. If you recall we had a thrilling Lion Dance performance last year. It will be no different this year so gather your beloveds and ring in the Lunar New Year with our annual Lion Dance on Sunday 25 February. The annual Hong Bao Golf and Hong Bao Bowl will take place on the same day – join us and reap more blessings with our various lucky dips and prizes in store. Even if you don’t golf or bowl, fret not; we have cash prizes and more in our ‘Wheel of Prosperity’ whenever you dine at the Terrace and Tavern – so be sure to ring in bountiful fortune at the Club!
Aligning Ourselves to Industry Standards
More efforts are in the pipeline, including a focused programme to drive service excellence and, with greater awareness on SG Secure, efforts to beef up our security. Our new smart membership cards will also be in effect from March, which will bring about improved security of our transactions in the Club and enable speedier member verification. So please bring along your new Seletar membership cards at all times and present them when requested. Moving forward, while the golf course and dining outlets are being renovated, we will step up on social activities to keep our members engaged and maintain the vibrancy of the Club. I would like to enjoin my fellow members to come enjoy the many activities that we will be organising for your pleasure. Let’s all welcome the Lunar New Year of the Dog with a Happy and Prosperous “Huat Ah!”

As part of our commitment to raising the level of professionalism in the Club, the Management is aligning its service and operational processes to industry standards. Firstly many of you would recall that we are already Audubon-certified – this means our cultural practices meets international standards in protecting our environment even as we preserve the natural heritage of the game. In September and October last year, we attained bizSAFE Levels 1 and 2. Currently we are in the process of attaining Level 3 certification. This would require our workplace safety and health (WSH) risk management measures to be inspected by an MOM-approved WSH auditor. This ensures safer and healthier work settings for our staff, in line with our commitment to provide them with an environment that they can develop and enjoy working productively in. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), we have been working in partnership with local

Getting to know
Seletar's Live Bands!
Jerry and the Neu Faces
All hail the neu kids on the block, Jerry and the Neu Faces! As the newest live band to join our Seletar family, this group of five comes armed with decades of experience in performing. The band consists of drummer Mokhtar, bass player Yuni, keyboardist Amir, guitarist Sullin as well as lead singer Jerry. Formed on 2 November 1972, they have performed around the world, including a 2-year music tour around Europe! This professional band has made guest appearances for big names such as Gerry and the Pacemakers, most well known for their classic song, Liverpool Football Club’s official anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone. They have even performed with Jennifer Rush and Mary Wilson of The Supremes! The unique band name was the brainchild of leader Jerry Fernandez. He said, “When I first started recruiting band members, there was constantly someone new joining. After a while, welcoming new members became the norm and I decided to call ourselves the Neu Faces to emphasise our freshness.” The name has since stuck for 45 years, despite some reshuffling of its members. What all the five members have in common is a vested passion for music. In their own words, Jerry and the Neu Faces “live and breathe music”. Music lovers might recall one of their

most iconic appearances when they all shaved bald leaving behind only a pigtail. That shiny new hairdo lasted from 1976 to 1977 and remained a memorable milestone for them. Jerry and the Neu Faces mostly performs hits from the 60s to 80s, so if you are in the mood for some nostalgia, come watch them and take a trip down memory lane! Some of their most popularly requested songs include classics such as ‘We’re Wonderful Tonight’, ‘Hotel California’ and ‘To Love Somebody’.

Los Hombres Los Hombres was formed in 2005 and has been a 3-member band since. It was originally made up of a family of three with lead singer Yanti Syed, her keyboardist husband Joe as well as their eldest son Blade. Soprano player Anthony Chong has since replaced Blade, but this friendly band remain on such good terms with one another they are almost like family!

Los Hombres is a flexible band who prioritises guests’ preference in song choices. Lead singer Yanti can sing a wide range of Mandarin, Hokkien and also Cantonese oldies, which has made her band a fast favourite amongst the Seletar Tavern faithfuls.
If you’re a fan of Asian oldies, do show them your support at the Tavern every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 8pm!

Calling all fans of RTZ! Did you know that the band has recently been renamed? Formed in 2011, RTZ started off with 3 members, Robin, Terry and Zain. Just last year, drummer Zain left the band to pursue other ambitions and was replaced by Henson. Since then, the band has adopted the new name RTH. Band leader Terry Mortimer is the lead vocalist who is also the founder of the band. Robyn Anthony is an accomplished guitar player and vocalist whose accolades include winning the SBC Talentime in 1984. The newest member, Henson Beng, was a former drummer for Matthew and the Mandarins. The trio represents closely knitted individuals who have known each other since the 80s and have had more than 30 years of experience in the music arena. In their own words, they were “destined to be musicians the moment we were born!” RTH is also no stranger to clubs. Having played in The British Club and Singapore Cricket Club, they rank Seletar Country Club as one of the most enjoyable places to play their music in. For Terry, it was because of the friendly members and great
atmosphere of the Club. He declared, “The atmosphere here is wonderful. We hope to be able to continue playing our music here for a long time to come!”

Seletar Swingers Seletar Swingers is swinging their way back to Seletar Country Club! Headed by long-time member Joe Png, this band is now scheduled to play every first and third Sunday of the month at the Tavern. Seletar Swingers was formed in 2015 after Joe got husband and wife duo Rolfston and Elaine Chia, as well as Zoey Khan and Derrick Chia to join him. Since the start of 2017, they have had two additional members - Agnes Png and Linda. They are a versatile group who can perform a diverse range of genres that includes English and Mandarin pop to Latin and country. What makes Seletar Swingers different is that they focus on vocals and harmonise in duets and trios and they use backing tracks in addition to a live guitar and bass.

The band is currently open to performing at charity events and are looking into collaborations with youths in order to help them gain relevant exposure in the music world.

Sincerity Band As professional veterans in the music scene, Sincerity Band specialises in playing jazz and pop music. It was formed in 2015 and made up of six members – Sallie the drummer, Mansor the guitarist, Raymond the tenor sax player, Linda the lead vocalist, Fuad the bassist as well as Salleh the keyboardist. Most of the band members are full time musicians with a wealth of experience playing at clubs around Orchard Road. The band frequently plays songs by Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Frank Sinatra. Upon request, they can also play the latest pop and rock songs, including popular Mandarin tunes! Sincerity Band stresses on the importance of audience participation. “We will actively mingle and invite the audience on stage to sing along with us and make it a point to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries to ensure that everyone has a good time watching us perform,” Salleh explains. “This is also why we named ourselves Sincerity Band; we want to share our music to our audience with a sincere heart!”

Juz Frenz Juz Frenz is made up of five members – lead singer Anthony Woo, guitarist Bob Tan, bassist Ben Yap, drummer Alan Pang and newly joined keyboardist Shahrun. As a bunch of passionate music lovers, the band was formed in 2010 and most of them have known each other for over a decade. Outside of their music world, they hold a variety of day jobs from a squash coach to a pathologist. This band plays a wide range of genres that include older pop, evergreen oldies, as well as some country and rock. For them, the main concern is to cater to requests by members of the audience as they believe that a band should always be flexible. When asked how the name ‘Juz Frenz’ came about, Anthony said, “We are all friendly and easygoing people. We get along really well with each other and our main purpose is to have fun and bring joy to others while jamming, so we felt that the name Juz Frenz was really suitable.”

Seletar Band Seletar Band is our very own resident band and has been around since June 2005. What started off as casual jamming sessions for Seletar Band soon turned into frequent requests for performances at major Club events. Before long, they became the main faces of music at our Club and have been so all the way till present day.
With more than 12 years of experience performing at Seletar Country Club, they are the band that our members are most familiar with. Seletar Band supports most of our Club’s events and also participates in various charity events. They play mainly oldies, which include a variety of pop, jazz, alltime favourites and even Mandarin and Hokkien/Cantonese songs upon special request. The band’s regular faces include Edward Xavier, Eliza Goh, Hia Hui Kim, Lawrence Yap and Ow Chong Mien. If you’re interested to sing with them, do go on up on stage and request for your favourite song to be played while you croon to your heart’s desire!

The Young Once You may have seen this band performing at the monthly dance night at Eagle’s View, strumming their signature song, ‘The Young Ones’ by Cliff Richard with gusto. This hallmark tune has endeared themselves to members and is a favourite on the dance floor. ‘The Young Once’ was formed more than ten years ago from a casual jamming session. Arnold Kang, Bob Tan, Daniel Kang and Michael Ho were its pioneer members, before Harry Tan and Michael Gan joined. Ben Yap has since replaced Michael Ho in this flexible band. They started off playing country and western music, and ever since they performed for a Chinese New Year event, they have been regularly invited to play at various Club events. They are currently the main faces of the monthly dancing night and are playing regularly with the Line and Social Dance Group headed by Tan York Peng.

Seletar Country Club, we have them all! On 6 November 2017, Seletar Country Club closed its doors to members for the annual Staff Day. You know what they say about things that go on behind closed doors – they are always unexpected. On normal days, you may have seen our staff going about their usual duties diligently, serving you food and drinks and flashing you bright smiles while they handle your queries and requests. What you may not know is that beneath each and every one of them lies a star in the making. During Staff Day, some stars shone especially bright. Out came aspiring artists who created wonderful artwork with recycled materials, models who struck up catwalk worthy poses, ballerinas who danced up a storm and even architects who built soaring

Dressing right for the occasion is an important way to observe social etiquette and our Club’s social mores. Hurray! Seletar Country Club has now moved yet another step forward in our commitment to becoming a family club of choice that aligns our service and practices to industry standards. Here’s more reasons to love Seletar Country Club. Our Club values all our staff and members and are committed towards continually improving service and safety standards. We are now Bizsafe certified for Level 1 and 2, with Level 3 due to be confirmed by January 2018. Bizsafe is a programme tailored to assist companies in building their workplace safety and health capabilities to provide a conducive workplace environment for all workers. Currently, we have a detailed risk assessment plan which we are in the process of carrying out to curtail any forms of workplace hazards as far as possible. This is important to us as the safety and wellbeing of all staff is of utmost priority. That way, we can ensure that they are in the best possible state of mind and health to serve our members! We are also an official adopter of the Tripartite Standards on Grievance Handling and working to bring more awareness to SG Secure. With all these standards in place, we wish to promote productivity and motivation for our staff so that they can give their best at work. Let us go on this journey of service and safety excellence together!

Hello, Seletar’s Service Mentors! Our newly-minted Service Mentors are ready to take our friendly service to another level! We are proud to announce that the Club is stepping into the next phase of our Customer Satisfaction Programme (CSP) which was launched in late 2014. Under the direction of then-Customer Satisfaction Committee, our management team underwent intensive training to set the ground for raising service standards in the Club. In June 2015, under the leadership of General Manager, Philip Tan, the Management team took over the CSP and focus was placed on quality service delivery. In 2017, this effort was renamed the Seletar Service Excellence Program (SEP). Service training is compulsory for all new staff and a badge of recognition is awarded when training is complete. Our quarterly STAR awards keep staff motivated by rewarding those who have gone the extra mile with extra off days and monetary incentives. Also, we commend staff who have received compliments for delivering excellent service. These achievements are recorded in their personnel files and considered during the annual performance appraisal.
We have seen improvements in our service quality and a gentle shift of service mindset in our employees. I strongly believe that the Club needs to build a sustainable customer-centric culture and provide consistent positive experiences for our members and visitors to stay relevant. - Philip Tan, General Manager
Enter the Service Mentors This New Year, the SEP gets a boost with our service mentors taking the lead. These mentors are selected from a pool of STAR Awards winners and senior staff from support to frontline teams. They have demonstrated exemplary service and positive attitude to both members and their peers, and will spearhead training efforts within their teams. We hope members will continue to support and encourage our staff as they put in their best to uphold the Club’s reputation as a friendly family Club.

Admin Fees for Score Submission Golfing members are reminded that with effect from 1 January 2018, an administrative fee of $10 per month will be imposed when you submit your score card at the Golf Reception counter or score card submission box. To avoid incurring the fee, members may submit scores through the Singapore Golf Association (SGA)’s Centralised Handicapping System (CHS), which is available on the following platforms: 1) Self-service Kiosks outside Golf Office 2) Mobile App for both iOS & Android Phones: SGA CHS 3) SGA Website: https://chs.sga.org.sg/#/ To start using the CHS, golfers will need to register on SGA’s website. Ambulance Buggy at Golf Course Have you seen our ambulance buggy near the golf course? Members can be assured that in the event of any casualty that takes place on the golf course, this medical vehicle will be deployed immediately. Equipped with the essential first aid kit, it can comfortably fit a stretcher as well as the driver and first aid officer. We also have certified medical personnel on standby in cases of emergency, so members can have a peace of mind when golfing on the course!

Aloha Batam! Our lady golfers just can’t get enough of each other! After a successful Ladies’ Open in September, they reunited again on 28 October. This time, it was for a get together in Batam at Palm Springs Golf & Country Club. During this 2-day trip, the ladies had a ball of a time together. It was also an especially memorable one for our own Lady Captain, Angelia Lim, who scored her first ever Hole in One! On this feat, she said, “It was really my lucky day. Not only did I score my first Hole in One at Hole 7, I also recorded my overall best score with a one under for the first nine holes. I guess I won’t be forgetting about Batam anytime soon!” Lady Captain also registered a personal best of three birdies that day. What an achievement!

Aside from golf, our ladies also had a great time basking in the beautiful sunset during their Hawaiian-themed dinner by the beach. They dressed for the occasion in attractive Hawaiian outfits complete with matching floral head wreaths and danced with abandon amid the gorgeous backdrop of the sun and sea. Despite the gusty sea winds, everyone took to the dance floor just like seasoned pros and even showcased their best impersonation of Marilyn Monroe! Of course, what’s a night by the beach without some good old yummy barbequed meat grilled to perfection?

You’ve Done Us Proud! Seletar Country Club – the place where winners are born! Who can dispute that after our big win in the SGA Inter Club League 2017? This time, we’ve produced two more winners who went one step further by beating over 140 participants to win the prestigious Audi Quattro Cup 2017. Widely regarded as the biggest amateur golf tournament nationally, it was a giant feat for our own Seletar duo, Nina Um and Shirley Lee, who emerged victorious after a grueling day of competition at Sentosa Golf Club on 13 October 2017. Our stars - Nina Um and Shirley Lee!
Winning has almost become a habit for Nina and Shirley. As part of the triumphant SGA League team where both represented Seletar Country Club in the Ladies’ A Division, this was their second major win of 2017. Both of them trained hard for the selection trials and went into the Audi Quattro Cup hoping to gain more competition exposure. Yet they exceeded all expectations by eventually claiming the crown. The big win did not come easy. Apart from having to familiarise themselves with the play format, the pair faced challenges on the golf course as well. “Sentosa Golf Club has always been a challenging course, as the greens are fast and the conditions are tricky. We had to learn to adapt to them during the competition,” Nina explained. “You also have to be consistent throughout the Audi Cup as it is just you and your partner relying on each other.”
On their victory, Shirley emphasised that it was extremely unexpected. “We were super shocked and surprised to win the tournament… We just never expected to win! It was only when they announced the results that we realised how big a win it was.” Following this triumph, Nina and Shirley will be headed to Los Cabos, Mexico from 1 to 5 December 2017 for the World Final, where they will represent Singapore and of course, Seletar Country Club. “It’s been a good year for Seletar – a year of victories. We are just really happy to contribute and hopefully, we can close the year with a bang!” Nina said. In our eyes, these ladies are already world beaters and we are all proud of you! You go, girls!
Seletar Meets Tanah Merah 11 November is widely known as Singles’ Day – a day to celebrate singlehood and being alone. However, that was far from the case for our Seletar committee members who spent that day forging and strengthening friendship bonds with their counterparts from Tanah Merah Country Club. This annual golfing affair ended with a tasty makan session where F&B Chairman David Siew was one of six winners for the lucky draw. We look forward to Tanah Merah Country Club hosting the return game in 2018!

Kara-OK! Get-Together What better way to welcome the festive season than to gather for a night of song and dance? With Christmas just round the corner, it was the perfect time for members to sing to their hearts’ content at our newly refurbished Karaoke Lounge! There were even guest appearances from Mediacorp artistes Chen Tian Wen, Joey Quek and Darren Lim, who charmed members with their fun-loving attitudes. Chen Tian Wen performed his signature song, ‘Unbelievable’, much to the joy and amusement of everyone present. Hearing him in person, it was not difficult to see how that song catapulted him to fame in 2015! Everyone had a jolly good time singing along to their favourite tunes and with the Christmas-themed decorations all around the Club, it was just as though Christmas came early! If you have yet to see our new and improved Karaoke Lounge, be sure to make your way there soon to soak in the merry atmosphere!

Seletar bowlers, get ready to strike your best pose! In November last year, our bowlers gathered twice – first for the Bowling Interclub Dinner and then for our very own Bowling Awards Night. Both events were high spirited ones that saw our bowlers enjoying themselves tremendously. During the Bowling Awards Night, everyone dressed according to theme, either in polka dots, stripes or checks. They were all ready to celebrate each other’s successes and it was such a refreshing change from their usual sports attire! Our youth bowlers also gave an entertaining performance by dancing to the tune of ‘Sorry Sorry’ by Korean boyband Super Junior. Their moves were so sleek and full of vigour that everyone was truly impressed! As Henry Seet said in his speech, “Our Seletar bowlers are so special and I’m confident that our young guns will be stepping up to become bowling stars in no time!” All dressed up!

Not to be overshadowed by their younger counterparts, the adult bowlers also orchestrated their own dance routine, revving it up on the dance floor to loud cheers from the crowd. The highlight of the night was when everyone gathered on stage and sang their hearts out. As per tradition, they sang Emil Chau’s all-time favourite, ‘Peng You’ (Friends). It was truly a night that upheld our Seletar Spirit and showcased our camaraderie as our bowlers collected their awards and cheered for one another as one big family. Bravo to all our awesome Seletar bowlers!

Castello Di Volpaia Wine Dinner 2017 It was an evening to remember for all 30 guests present at the Castello Di Volpaia Wine Dinner. Held in Eagle’s View, it was hosted by Federica Mascheroni Stianti, the third generation of her family who now oversees her family’s organic winery in Italy.

During the four-course dinner, our guests tasted and learnt how to appreciate a fine selection of wines from Tuscany. The wines were produced in the village of Castello di Volpaia, where it has the highest elevation of vineyards. At high altitude, the vineyards are believed to have higher mineral content which results in the production of elegant wine.
Out of the four main courses, many guests’ favourite dish was the Pan Seared Duck Liver, the Foie Gras. They remarked on its “balanced taste” when paired with the Castello di Volpaia Bianco di Volpaia 2014 wine, as well as the “smoothness” when both tastes melded together. All of them also indicated that they would recommend the Wine Dinner to others as it was a good experience that was worth the amount paid.
Ms Federica explained and elaborated on the organic winemaking processes back at her hometown, and also fielded queries from our guests. Wine aficionados were then given a short lesson on the difference between French and Italian wines.
For member Tay Eng Huat, it was an enjoyable evening for him as he got to spend them with his loved ones. He said, “Although the Wine Dinner was really good and the host was knowledgeable and well-informed, what made it wonderful was because of the good company.”

Coorganised by Dairy Farm Singapore to raise funds for the disadvantaged in our society, it was a successful event that also saw many heartwarming performances by students and seniors alike at the Seletar Room. ST MICROELECTRONICS CORPORATE EVENT Look who’s back at Seletar Country Club! True fans of Seletar – ST Microelectronics – happily returned to host another event in our Club. Led once again by Dr Antonio Alvarez who was extremely pleased with our Club’s service and ambience, it sure looks like they will soon be friends of Seletar!
3M SINGAPORE TEAMBUILDING EVENT Look at all these charming pirate-wannabes from 3M Singapore! With their elaborate Viking headgear as well as improvised weapons, they surely had lots of fun battling each other during their teambuilding event at our poolside trellis. Who says only children can have fun?

Our Club is one of the best places to kick back and relax in! A 70-strong Pratt & Whitney team paid us a visit during their full day event and enjoyed their time here so much; they even showed off their goofy sides to the cameras!
