FIRST WORDS

Congratulations

Dear Members A Happy New Year to all and Xing Nian Kuai Le! I hope you thoroughly enjoyed yourselves at our Countdown Party. The festivities aren’t over yet – we look forward to ringing in the Lunar New Year with you next.

Ringing in the Lunar New Year 2019 is going to be a year full of joy, friendships and love as the cheerful and sociable Earth Pig comes around. We have planned a series of events to celebrate this – starting with our Fortune Draw on 1 February and culminating in our Chinese New Year Party complete with our annual Lion Dance and Cai Qing ceremony on Saturday 16 February. Don’t forget to check out the many new year reunion packages the F&B have in store for you – from private gatherings to full-scale banquets, do make the Club a stop for your New Year feasting.

SELETAR BUZZ 2

First up as we begin the new year, let us congratulate our very own Hailey Loh for her amazing win in the 27th SICC/DBS Junior Invitational Golf Championship last December. Not only was she crowned Champion of the Girl’s Division, Hailey also bagged the Eagles Cup for being the best girl Singapore performer! To top it off, this was the first time that the Girl’s division was won by a Singaporean – bringing glory to both the Club and the nation. Congratulations Hailey and we look forward to greater achievements to come!

An Exciting Year Ahead Seletarians can look forward to a very exciting year ahead as quite a few important things are happening this 2019. The Founders of our Club, Sport Singapore, have decided to give up their rights and convert the Club to one with a fully-elected model for the Chairman and all Management Committee positions. This will require members to adopt a new Constitution at an EOGM to be convened before our next AGM. Once adopted, the

Chairman and all MC positions will be up for election by members at the AGM in July 2019. Our F&B renovations is work-in-progress, and if all things go as planned, we target Terrace renovations to take place sometime within Q1. In the meantime, members can enjoy an alternative dining experience at the Poolside Café, which will serve an interesting array of hawker fare and attractive promotions to whet your appetites. As for our golf course renovation, it is progressing very well in spite of the rainy December period and we expect the full 18-holes to be completed on schedule. Visuals on the new course layout are also available for viewing at the Golf Complex. During this renovation period, the Club’s revenue is expected to take a hit, but Management is on top of this and doing its best to manage our operating costs with minimum disruption to members. I urge members to continue supporting our Club’s events and activities, and continue your support of our F&B outlets to keep the Club’s vibrancy alive.

cutting down on electricity usage with power-saving lights, reduced the use of plastic bags at our changing rooms, converted most of our taps to sensor-activated ones to save water, and joined the national initiative to cut down on straw usage at our F&B outlets. You can also do your part – by bringing your own bags for the changing rooms and when you take-away food at the F&B, switching off the tap as you lather up and bathe, reducing the use of plastic in the Club, including for consumables like plastic utensils and tissue etc. Any efforts you make help us reduce our carbon footprint and save our beautiful earth – after all, we only have one earth so we all have to do our part to take care of it. More initiatives will be rolled out this 2019 including pushing for more paperless communication – for instance, you may sign up for e-statement and e-newsletter so we can reduce printing and paper usage. We hope members will support the Club in our efforts to go green and sign up when we roll out the programmes.

Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year

For our fitness buffs, we hope you enjoy our new gym equipment which was only recently installed in December. With this we have completed our final phase of gym equipment enhancement, so I urge you to take advantage of our varied fitness programmes to keep yourself in the pink of health.

In closing, let me wish all our Seletar members and friends a Happy and Prosperous New Year. May all good things come your way.

Make 2019 The Year

Seletar Goes Green!

Be a part of the Green force! Here are some tips and measures to save the earth. Did you know...

Using energy-saving light bulbs We have been replacing spoilt Halogen lights with energy-saving LED ones since two years ago.

Using less plastic Save the earth by cutting down on the use of plastic straws and takeaway cutlery.

Reusing paper 17 trees are needed to make 1 ton of paper. Printing only what we need and printing on both sides of a paper can help save our trees.

Fitting lights with motion-sensors A number of our toilet taps and lights have been fitted with motion sensors to save energy.

Using bio-degradable plastic We will be replenishing our existing stock of plastic bags (e.g. for our changing rooms) with bio-degradable ones by mid-2019.

Reducing paper usage You can opt to receive your monthly statements electronically & reduce paper usage.

Using less water You can save water by using less towels and switching off the shower tap while you lather up.

Reducing food wastage Most food waste ends up in landfills where they decay and produce harmful greenhouse gases.

Recycling used papers and documents We send all our papers and shred important documents for recycling.

Staff Day 2018

2

Question: What is harder than winning the top lucky draw prize? Answer: Juggling three balloons at the same time! That was one of the games our staff challenged themselves to at our annual Staff Day on 5 November 2018. Taking a break from hosting it in the Club as was the case in the past two years, our staff gathered at Resorts World Convention Centre for a day of food, fun, games and prizes!

3

Thanks to our members and vendors' sponsorship and support, everyone was able to take a day off from work to have some bonding good times, going home with vouchers and in good spirits. As founder of Virgin Group, Richard Branson, said, “If you look after your staff, they'll look after your customers. It's that simple.”

TOWARDS SERVICE EXCELLENCE

CONGRATULATIONS TEAM SELETAR!

COMPLIMENTS FOR A JOB WELL DONE!

My family regularly dine at the terrace. We found the staff there superb friendly and amicable... and they serve with passion from their hearts. Do allow me to give my sincere appreciation to Chong Lai Teng and Miu Miu who often serve their customers with the utmost zest and passion. Their service often exceeds expectation which I find I must highlight as they deserve me to pen this compliment for them.

Lai Teng with Harrold

My son Harrold told them causally that 9 December is his birthday and that he would be coming down to the Terrace to celebrate his 8th birthday. To our surprise, Lai Teng and Miu Miu were very generous to present him with birthday presents. This kind and generous act deserves to be specially complimented as they brightened up my son's birthday and it is service exceeding expectation. Kudos to all staff of Seletar Country Club.

Cleaning Express together with their CEO, Mr Aziz Yusof (2nd row, middle).

Thank You to our Janitorial & Maintenance Staff To thank our janitorial and maintenance teams for their hard work and a job well done, Seletar Country Club and Cleaning Express Pte Ltd came together on 29 November 2018 to organize an appreciation lunch for them, with gift vouchers and goodie bags for everyone. The prata live station was a hit as the cheery prata man showed off his skills in an effortless display of gravity-defying prata flips and swings.

Our maintenance team flexing their muscles!

Well Done, Ragunatha! We are proud of Ragunatha Pillai A/L Rajagopal for being one of the recipients of the LOO (Let's Observe Ourselves) Awards 2018. With 18 years of janitorial experience, Ragunatha helped to maintain 5-star toilets at our Club. Kudos to all our janitorial staff for keeping Seletar Country Club 5-star ranked by the Restroom Association (Singapore). Ragunatha receiving his award from Guest of Honour, Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources.

TOWARDS SERVICE EXCELLENCE

The Unsung Hero Recipient of the LOO (Let's Observe Ourselves) Awards 2018 and supervisor of the Janitorial team at Seletar, Ragunatha (affectionately known as Ragu) opens up to us about his life at Seletar. He works late into the night with his team, sometimes past midnight. He hasn’t been back to visit his family in Malacca for two to three months, but thanks to technology, he videocalls and messages them over WhatsApp every day. Cleaning is a thankless and often overlooked job, but an important one nevertheless. Seletar Buzz speaks to Seletar’s stalwart and hero of our sparkling tiles and refreshing restrooms, which was awarded the Certificate of Accreditation from The Restroom Association (Singapore) for having met the 5-star standard of a premium restroom.

Originally from Perak, Malaysia, Ragu’s family moved to Malacca, where he studied till Secondary Three before dropping out of school to enter the workforce. At 21 years old, he came to Singapore in search of better prospects, and his very first stint with Cleaning Express was at Seletar Country Club, where he would spend the next 18 years of his life.

Where he calls home

Ragu has hopes of starting his own business one day, but for now, he is happy with his bliss, and couldn’t ask for more.

In between, he met the love of his life (at his cousin’s wedding no less), and is now happily married with a 4-year-old daughter.

When I asked Ragu how the food from the appreciation lunch a few hours earlier was, he said he did not really have the chance to enjoy it. Thanks to the sudden downpour, the proactive supervisor had gone to set up the necessary signages to warn of wet floor around the Club. Break time or not, his job clearly came first. Ragu shared with a laugh that his wife complains that his first home is Seletar, since he spends more time at the Club than at home. “I love my job,” Ragu says, striking me as a very hands-on leader who enjoys working and delights in a job well done, even if he gets no thanks for it. A cleaner’s job never ends. Particularly on weekends when the Club is buzzing with people and activities, Ragu needs to plan his manpower properly and be prepared to stay even later to clean up after the last guest has left and get in to work early before the first guest arrives. Even though Ragu is a contracted janitor from Cleaning Express, he has long been recognized as one of Seletar’s very own staff, with his friendliness and dedication to the Club. Ragu says he is grateful to his manager, Mr Gamal for his guidance and encouragement from the very start of his career, and also credits Francis (who used to run the Halfway House) for helping him to improve his English and computer skills.

READY GOLF: MAJOR RULE CHANGES FOR 2019 Since 1 March 2018, the Club has adopted ‘Ready Golf’ in accordance with the United States Golf Association (USGA) for a positive impact on the pace of play. The list of changes can be found on our website, but for now we bring you the major changes that you should take note of. Rule 5.6 will encourage prompt pace of play by recommending that: • Players should recognize that their pace of play affects others and they should play promptly throughout the round (such as by preparing in advance for each stroke and moving promptly between strokes and in going to the next tee), • A player should make a stroke in no more than 40 seconds (and usually in less time) after the player is able to play without interference or distraction, and • Committees should adopt a Pace of Play Policy (rather than only say they may do so). New Rule 6.4 In addition, new Rule 6.4 will expressly allow playing out of turn in match play by agreement, and for stroke play, will affirmatively allow and encourage players to play out of turn in a safe and responsible way to save time or for convenience (also known as “ready golf”). Reasons for Change: By giving players affirmative guidance, support and encouragement on prompt play, these proposed Rule changes will help in: • Setting expectations for both beginners and experienced players on what types of behavior are considered prompt play, including the maximum amount of time it should normally take to make a stroke, and • Encouraging players to play faster by confirming that it is proper to play out of turn in stroke play when it is safe and responsible to do so (that is, to play “ready golf”). Enforcing pace of play will continue to be primarily up to each Committee, as there are limits to what the Rules themselves can do to insist that players play promptly. These changes will enable Committees to point to specific expectations set by the Rules when using their authority to enforce prompt play, and encourage every Committee to adopt a pace of play policy so that all players on the course, whatever the type or level of play, will know what is expected of them.

Golf Course Redevelopment Project

A Championship Course in the Making Phase 1 of the golf course redevelopment is progressing well, and the main area of work is currently being done on Holes 1 to 5, 9, 15 and 16 which are closer to the reservoir edge. In line with our continuing efforts to go green, efficiency and cost savings were factored into our design with recommendations from our architects and consultants Golfplan and Green Dynasty, as we aim for our course to be sustainable and to last till 2040.

Green Considerations 1. Use of drought-resistant Zoysia Zeon Turf Grass First in In our continuing efforts to Singapore! go green, our water usage is expected to be reduced by 30% with this new grass, due in part to lower water dissipation from the thinner leaves. The dense root system also makes it harder for weeds to grow, thus requiring lesser use of chemical treatments and fertilisers. The Zoysia Zeon grass will also replace all cow grass and be planted on our entire golf course including the tees, fairways and roughs, with the exception of the greens and landscaping. This will result in reduced maintenance cost and greater playability for our golfers. 2. Energy-efficient Smart Irrigation System First in We will be one of the first in Singapore! Asia to use the innovative Toro Lynx Smart System. This latest technology from the United States is able to identify soil conditions and provide precision mobile control of individual sprinklers on the golf course, leading to more efficient water usage. Wireless sensors in the greens and fairways will be able to measure the pH value, moisture content and temperature of the soil, allowing us to supply the exact amount of water where it is needed.

Earthwork, lake excavation and rough shaping being done on Holes 3 and 15.

Deepening the lakes and diverting the water.

SELETAR BUZZ 12 JAN/FEB 2019

GOLF

Progress Updates All 18 holes will be reshaped and reconfigured to pose new and different challenges to our golfers. Turfing will commence towards the end of 2018 at the driving range and will be ready to re-open by end of March 2019. We will be purchasing turf for the driving range and the first nine holes and will harvest from them for the second nine. Playing on the Composite 9:

Ensuring A Smooth & Safe Play for All Golfers

As you enjoy your play on Composite 9B till 28 May 2019, do remember to practise care and caution at all times and look out for your fellow golfers on the course. Here are some safety reminders to ensure a smooth and safe play for all!

Do follow all directional signs. Golfers are prohibited from entering construction areas for their safety. Those caught flouting this rule will face disciplinary action.

Updated as of 16 Jan 2019

All construction boundary fences, including the black canvas/sheets, are “Abnormal Course Conditions” & are “Immovable Obstructions”. The construction areas have been designated as “No Play Zone” and players should not go into the construction areas to retrieve or collect any ball. Hole 14 (Composite Hole 9) – Similar to Hole 18, this is a relatively short par-4 (247m). Golfers who can hit more than 200m should not tee off until the group in front has cleared the green.

Golfers returning to the Clubhouse via Hole 10 (Composite Hole 6) after playing Hole 14 (Composite Hole 9) should exercise caution in the face of oncoming flight playing Hole 10. They should stick to the buggy path at all times and not venture onto the fairway. Care and caution should be focused on golfers teeing off from Hole 10.

from Seletar’s Best

Be a part of the tennis community at Seletar! Whether you’re looking to pick up the sport, striving to improve your skills, or just want to have fun and socialise, there is something for everyone. In this issue, Head of our Tennis Academy Programme, Coach Aslam shares some tips on how to become a better tennis player. With 17 years of teaching and playing experience, Coach Aslam was Head Coach at Temasek Polyclinic for seven years and Head Coach of United World College East for three years. He is also certified under the SG-Coach Programme.

1. Know Thyself To learn how to be a better tennis player, first know your current skill level. You can self-rate using the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP), or get your actual NTRP rating officially determined by a qualified and certified teaching pro. Assess yourself at https://tennisclub.gsfc.nasa.gov/tennis.ratings.html

2. Assess Your Game After knowing your rating, review your game from all aspects. Identify your strengths, weaknesses and areas of inconsistencies. A coach can also help you in this regard. Coach Aslam

3. Set Goals With a proper assessment of your game, it is time to set your goals. In addition to general objectives, specific objectives is key to becoming a better tennis player. Bowling to the

Seletar Spirit The Annual Masters Bowling Championship 2018 returned with MQ in October, culminating in a thrilling finals tournament on 24 and 25 November. Spirits were high in Seletar Bowl as our bowlers hit the lanes to display their skills, fortitude and a striking ability to have fun at the same time! Seletar Annual Bowlers’ Awards Night was held on 25 November to celebrate the achievements and friendships of the bowlers in our In-house leagues over the year, with trophies and prizes presented. Games were also aplenty and laughter shared as our members gamely flexed their facial muscles in the ‘Face the Cookie’ game, chugged beer like a champ in the boat race, and showered sprinkles and a whole lotta love in the cake decorating competition. As we say goodbye to the 33rd In-house Mixed Bowling League, we welcome the start of the next league on 12 December 2018. Congratulations once again to all our deserving winners!

3. For the love of games and prizes A crowd favourite, the drinking game saw our sporty participants raising their glasses to finish the beer in almost record-breaking time.

Congratulations to the biggest winner of the night, Mr Ismail Taha.

Mesmerised by the alphorn.

4. For the love of music The Swiss Alphine Lions band sharing their music with the crowd.

'Zum Wohl!' ('To your health' in German)

The acclaimed Swiss Alpine Lions band set a lively mood for the night with their Swiss-German-Austrian country music. The participants also got to try out the alphorn, a brass wind instrument played by Alpine herdsmen and villagers at ceremonies and festivals.

5. For the love of people The long communal tables allowed for sitting with friends and strangers alike, making it easy to swig beer and make conversation with fellow beer lovers!
