Dear Members
H
appy New Year and welcome to the digital edition of Seletar Buzz!
In line with our commitment to go green, we are starting 2020 on the right foot by ceasing the printing and distribution of our hardcopy magazine. Though we are launching with baby steps, this forms part of our efforts to make Seletar a nature-friendly club that is kind to the environment.
Congratulations to James Leow Before I begin, let me first congratulate James Leow on his amazing gold win in the SEA Games’ Men’s Individual Golf tournament, which was held at the Luisita Golf and Country Club, Philippines, last December. It was a momentous triumph, especially since it is our nation’s first individual golf gold in three decades! Super showing by James and kudos to all our Team SG golfers.
New Year, New Beginnings This is an immensely exciting year for all of us, as we count down to the re-opening of our golf course. It has

been a very challenging 16 months of hard work and in just two more months, we will finally be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour. Finishing works on the golf course are progressing well and on track for a tentative scheduled opening on 1 April, when members will get to enjoy the golf course exclusively for two months till June. Then we shall all look forward to a triple celebration of our golf course official opening, our 25th anniversary of being in our current location, and the opening of the time capsule that was embedded when we first moved here 25 years ago. On top of bringing back our full calendar of golfing events, members can look forward to the popular Medal of Medals in April and the New Members’ Golf Game in May. In the meantime, the Club has organized an exciting golf trip to Guangzhou, China, in March – do look out for the details that will be out in due course.

The lady masseur Mayolien Mery was very professional and courteous. Her knowledge of her job is excellent. She was able to get rid of my knee pain which I had for over 6 months through her massage. I am very impressed with her capabilities and have signed up for a 10-session treatment package. I will consider asking my wife to use Mery’s services too. - Ratnam Balasubramaniam
I had dinner with my wife at the Terrace this evening. After signing for the bill, we set off and was heading towards the carpark. As we were just walking down the planks towards the Tavern, a longservice staff, Ms Carmen, came running after us, and handed over my wallet. She had been serving my table prior to this. I was a bit surprised - I had either left my wallet on the table, or it had dropped on the floor. Notwithstanding, please allow me to record my most profound appreciation and gratitude to Ms Carmen for her quick thinking to run after me to return the wallet. Truly grateful.
I just want to specially mention Ms SELINA Yen who had served my family when we were there for dinner on Sunday (13 Oct 2019). Despite the crowd and the busy condition, she was always putting on a big, bright smile. She was also very alert and efficient in serving us and the other customers. She had indeed made our dining experience a good and pleasant one. Congratulations for having such good staff and these are the things - good and personalized service - that will set Seletar Country Club apart from the rest. Keep up the good work. - Chan LC
Staff Honesty Kudos to Mr Chanar Singh Quat for his honesty in returning member Mr William Toh’s handphone.

Meet the man who made it happen J ames Leow – the unassuming name of this 22-year-old Seletar member belies the historic feat he was to achieve at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines. Coming out of his debut with an individual golf gold for Singapore – 30 years in waiting – is nothing short of spectacular. Yet this young man remains focused and humble; a true inspiration. Our heartiest congratulations, James! Despite his busy schedule, Seletar Buzz managed to squeeze an interview with the jubilant James just days after his win.
SB Congratulations James! We are sure you have heard this before, but this was such a historic win! How do you feel and how has this impacted you? JL It has indeed been a long time since Singapore won the individual gold and words cannot explain how excited I am to be able to accomplish that feat. I have been working hard on my game the last couple of months and felt that the consistent and disciplined routine has paid off. All these would not have been possible without the support and help from my family, friends, SGA, Seletar and the golfing community in Singapore. This win will definitely boost my confidence for future golfing events like the upcoming Australia Master of the Amateurs and SMBC Singapore Open. I know I am on the right track to my dream. This will only drive me to train even harder and become even better. SB Were you happy with your game? JL I was definitely happy with my game that week but there was still room for improvement. I have been reflecting and trying to work on it. I felt I was hitting my drives on the line I want; approaching shots close to the pin and hitting putts on line with a good pace. However on hindsight I felt more could be done on the mental aspect of my short game. SB How was your experience at the SEA Games? JL Everyone thinks there is way more pressure and expectations but I did not feel that way at all when I was there. Every single one of my national teammates, coach and managers were not doing anything special; we just did what we had to according to our routine and strengths of our game. In fact, we had so much fun, laughter and encouragement during the trip, which made it memorable and exciting to be part of.
18
GOLF
SB You went through quite a bit of an ordeal at the Athletes Village and even had to miss the practice round. Tell us how it was. JL Always expect the unexpected I guess. We had to move out of the village to a villa after the first night in a passing typhoon, which was not any closer to the golf course. Food was not up to the athletes’ required standard at the villas, but everyone including myself just made do with what we have. Athletes after all learn to adapt and find a way to make it work. I personally did not feel disturbed or affected by any of it as I was just focused on my routine from morning to evening. I was unable to attend any of the familiarisation trips to the venue due to exams and classes. But I told myself that I knew my game really well and just needed one round of practice to be ready. I managed to get 12 holes in and drove the remaining to know the layout, misses, tee shots and preferable shot shape. Within the 12 holes, I got the putting green speed dialed. I went through the whole 18 holes visually with a yardage book and that really helped me know what club or shot I needed to hit off the tee to certain pins. SB That sounds like good strategy. How has your college golf career shaped you as a golfer? JL In just two years, I have learned way more about my game and different course conditions. The level of competition is so deep; you meet fellow competitors who go on to play PGA tours. Playing on some PGA tour courses have allowed me to learn the required level of the game to stay on top. The exposure has really changed me as a whole and helped my game. Competition is intensive even within my team and that constantly pushes me to train harder to be better.

“Golf is a game of imperfection and it always knocks you down in the process of getting better. SB Any tips for younger golfers who may be thinking of pursuing college golf? JL Picking the right school with an awesome golf programme, academic curriculum, coaches, teammates, and supportive athletic department really creates a different college experience for both golf and academic pursuit. Be smart and disciplined about your routine, time management and life choices and you will do great. Trust yourself and believe in the process that it takes time to be better. SB What is your golfing story? What were some sacrifices you had to make along the way in your golfing journey? JL There were definitely sacrifices to get to where I am today. Things like going out with friends, missing latenight partying and waking up early in the morning to get the extra work in. Golf is a game of imperfection and it always knocks you down in the process of getting better. I would always be so mad at myself and almost quit whatever I was doing. But the thought of it in the long term and believing in the process that I would be better changed it all. If your passion for the sport is there, you will enjoy the whole golfing journey so much more.

e were delighted to have friends from Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC) over for a friendly round of golf on 23 November 2019, as the committee members from both clubs exchanged thoughts and forged closer ties at the same time. A Return to the
Good Ol’ Days I
t was a return to the good old times for golfers from Seletar, Keppel Club, Sembawang Country Club and Warren Golf & Country Club at the heritage-themed 4-way Interclub game on 14 December 2019. As it was raining, the golfers only managed to play 9 holes, but that did not dampen their high spirits at the post-game dinner, where everyone let their hair down and dressed up kampong-style. The last Interclub game was held in 2016, and it was indeed a return to the kampong spirit of forging friendships and promoting interaction amongst the clubs.

espite the light drizzle, the first ever edition of the Junior Texas Scramble Competition on 25 November 2019 saw enthusiastic participation from 36 juniors, the youngest of whom was only five years old! The team competition format emphasized fun over the pressure of individual scores, and it was an endearing sight to see the little ones swinging their clubs and putting in their best effort. A good way to expose the juniors to a golf competition while still having fun with their fellow peers! Kudos to the winners and winning teams!

Good Golf Posture: Prevent injury and start playing better! The Importance of Your Golf Posture Have you ever wondered why your golf swing is inconsistent? More importantly, what is the reason for your back pain, golfer’s elbow (lateral elbow), shoulder and even hip injuries? Good posture is fundamental in the game of golf. Unfortunately, it is one of the aspects that is often neglected. Poor posture can lead to: • Straightening up in your golf swing (loss of posture) • Restricted body rotation which can lead to an overly dominant arm swing. This can result in poor face contact i.e. hitting thin/fat shots, off the toe or even missing the ball completely. Loss of rotation in the spine due to poor posture will lead to a compensatory golf move, known as “all hands” to most golfers. With this compensatory move, the swing plane typically gets steeper with your shots losing control because it is difficult to square the club at impact!
Postures to avoid
1. The Bad “C”
2. The Bad “S”
What it looks like: Shoulders and upper back (thoracic spine) slumped forward at address position, resembling a letter “C” with a significant curve from your tailbone to the back of your neck.
There are a few possible causes of this posture: • Poor core and weak glutes • Poor hip mobility • Lack of awareness in differentiating the hips from the spine
Why it should be rectified: • This posture leads to restricted thoracic spine mobility. • Poor posterior weight shift to your hips.
Why it should be rectified: The excessive curve puts a lot of stress on the back (lumbar spine), especially with the high speed in a golf swing. Most golfers do not see it as a prevailing problem but with “load” and over a prolonged period of time, this can lead to serious discomfort.
Limited rotation will cause you to have difficulty in your backswing. Coupled with restricted motion, this can highly impact your ability to hit the ball accurately. Consequently, you may miss the “sweet spot” which will definitely decrease your distance!
The Good Flat Posture
A professional coach can go a long way in helping you to get the right posture and improving your game. Call 6481 5527 to find out more.

t’s a busy year end at Seletar! November and December saw an array of activities for everyone, from the Christmas Light Up, baking workshops, magic show, caroling and bouncy castle for the kiddos to balloon sculptures giveaway. The main clubhouse exuded Christmas elegance with its classic blue and silver decorations. Annual Bowlers’
Awards Night
S
eletarians are known for their friendliness and camaraderie, and our bowlers exemplify that best whenever they get together! The annual Bowlers’ Awards Night 2019 held on 16 November was a celebration of exceptional bowling and beautiful friendships, as we presented trophies to the winners of the 35th In-House League and Annual Masters Championship. We were also delighted to have with us this year representatives from the other clubs’ Bowling Committees.
We can all be heroes!
Special thanks goes to our generous sponsors, the Bowling Sub-Committee and In-House League (IHL) captains, as well as the Organising Committee who put in much effort to make it a truly special night for all the bowlers. In line with the Mask Magic theme, everyone donned fancy masks and there was even a photo booth to immortalize the precious memories. The night ended with the Bowling family’s tradition - a heartwarming mass singing of the song “Friends” by Emil Chau. It was also Ms Lily Lim’s last event as the Bowling Convenor as she passes on the baton to Susan Soon – we thank her for her contributions, and also welcome the new Bowling Sub-Committee on board! he Sports Complex never looked more spine-chilling than it did on 19 October 2019 at our Halloween Spooky Challenge! It was fun and games aplenty for the whole family, as the participants gamely took on the spooky challenges – from dressing the ‘Mummy’, completing obstacles such as hula hoop jump and bean bag balance to the Witch Hat Ring Toss. There were also fringe activities like arts and crafts and face painting. With painted faces and attempts at scary expressions, the kids had fun smashing the paper piñata to smithereens and seeing candy rain from them. So keep calm, eat candy and continue to be freaky.

eletarians know how to come together for a good time, and our very own members’ bands prove that they are also a talented bunch. What started as members’ impromptu jamming on stage over a decade ago has today evolved into a buzzing music scene at Seletar. With three members’ bands together with hired bands on our weekly line-up, our vibrant F&B scene is due in no small part to their infectious energy and dynamic music sizzling up the atmosphere at the Tavern! Not many are aware too that our members’ bands receive no remuneration, only seeking to share their love of music with everyone, and we are proud to provide the platform for that. Did you know that members who would like to showcase their singing chops are welcome to share the stage too? Check out our members’ bands below!
