At the Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) held earlier this year, members have given the Management Committee (MC) overwhelming support to renew our land lease until 2040. The renewal of the lease comes with a condition that 15 metres of the land along the reservoir’s edge will be taken back for Nparks to build a track for public access around the reservoir. With this boundary setback, the affected holes along the reservoir will have to be reconfigured and this will create a domino effect on adjacent holes. FIRST WORDS

We have to understand that the existing course has been around for more than 20 years. Course maintenance costs will keep escalating as the course gets older. Our Seletar golf course needs a new lease of life too! Our underground irrigation pipes and sprinkler system have been breaking down ever too frequently. Two out of three of our main pumps have broken down and were repaired two years ago. Returfing works (removing cow grass within the fairways) has been ongoing and will never end unless the course is turfed wall-towall with zoysia. Moving on we need to renovate the course fully with all-new irrigation pipes, advanced sprinkler system and new main pumps. With the ponds and waterways enlarged and deepened, they will be interconnected with underground balancing pipes or through pumps, enhancing the need to have water features. Leaving most of the trees intact, the course will have to be stripped for wallto-wall zoysia to be planted. While doing so, some of our “blind” fairways will be re-shaped to minimize dangerous play. The work will be carried out in two phases where one nine-hole is playable. During the expected 18 months of renovation work, we will also arrange for members to play at our reciprocal clubs in Singapore. As negotiations with Nparks is still underway, we seek members’ understanding, support and confidence for us to negotiate the best for our Club and golf course. We look forward to your support for a new and exciting Seletar golf course. In the meantime – Happy Golfing!

Inter-Club Friendly: SELETAR VS CHANGI Text by Alicia Liang It was in the afternoon of Sunday, 28 May 2017, where 40 members of Changi Golf Club, led by their President Dr. B.K. Nair and Vice-Captain Chan Hee Mun, met our Seletarians for a friendly game of golf. The annual inter-club friendly was held at our home ground this year. Blessed with great weather, everyone enjoyed the lighthearted game, encouraging each other and having fun on the golf course. The day concluded with a generous buffet spread by the Tavern. It was also time for the much-awaited prize award

ceremony. Our Seletarians did us proud and won the game again. Seletar Captain Ismail Taha and Vice-Captains from both clubs also thanked everyone in contributing to the splendid day and proposed several toasts. Our guests from Changi Golf Club were also gifted Seletar’s very own history and heritage book – Seletar Spirit: The Seletar Country Club Story. All in all, it was heartwarming to witness the camaraderie between members from both clubs, strengthening our inter-club bonds. Our ladies bonding with their counterparts

Singapore Junior Golf Championship 2017 Participants from Malaysia marching in during the Opening Ceremony

Seletar is proud to have hosted the Singapore Junior Golf Championship 2017 for the second consecutive year in early June. Launched in 1975, it is one of the most established tournaments in the region and this year we saw more than 100 players from 14 countries. Rising Australian star Jediah Morgan emerged victorious with his consistent performance as the Overall Boy Winner. His three-day aggregate of nine-under-par 207 was five shots clear of Thai teenager Parathakorn Suyasri, who edged Hein Sithu from Myanmar for second place on countback. In the Girls’ category, the competition was won by Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol with a total of five-under 211, eight strokes in front of her closest rivals, Malaysians Geraldine Wong and Winnie Ng. Making the most of their experience on the course, our very own members Louis Tee and Vanessa Khoo Qi Lin had the distinction of winning the prizes for the best local boy / girl performers. Vanessa Khoo also won the Jennifer Yan’s Trophy for her great performance. Well done all! A well-earned victory by Jediah Morgan & Arpichaya Yubol

Reduced Buggy Fees

during Inclement Weather (For Weekends & Public Holidays) With effect from 8 June 2017, buggy fees have been reduced to 9-hole rate if the start of a golf game is significantly delayed due to inclement weather and based on the following conditions: • Tee off after 9.45am for AM play • Tee off after 4.00pm for PM play For golfers who have yet to tee-off and opt not to proceed with their game when the course is re-opened for play, the 9-hole buggy fees will still be applicable.

AED is Now Available at the Driving Range The Club has recently installed an automated external defibrillator (AED) at the Driving Range. In the event that one of our member / guest suffers a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), this will greatly increase his / her chance of survival as every minute counts. For every minute that passes, a victim’s chance of surviving a SCA decreases by 7 to 10%.

Single Player Prohibited on the Course

The SCA survival rate in Singapore is only 3 - 4%. The key to improving the chance of survival is for bystanders to act as soon as possible and get an AED to shock the heart back to a normal rhythm. When cardiac arrest is witnessed, the immediate application of CPR and AED has led to survival rates as high as 50%.

The Management Committee has decided that for the safety of all, golfers are not permitted to play on the course alone at any time of the day, including during General Play and competitions. SELETAR BUZZ 20 JUL/AUG 2017
