Dear Members AGM 2019

T

he Club will be holding its 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 29 July. You would have received the Notice of AGM by now, with the nomination forms included. This will be our first full elections of the Management Committee and I encourage members who wish to serve to participate in the elections. For your convenience, the electoral ballots will start at 2pm at the Eagle’s View.

RENOVATION OF SELETAR TERRACE AND TAVERN LAWN To improve members’ dining experience, the Terrace and Tavern will be closed for renovations from 1 July and in the meantime, our F&B operations and ‘live’ band nights will be relocated to the Poolside. Members can expect a vibrant ambience with hawker stalls, BBQ food like satay, sambal stingray, sambal lala and more; and even a roast meat stall. While the renovations are ongoing, we seek your cooperation and understanding on any inconveniences; we assure you the F&B and Development Sub-committees are sparing no effort in bringing you an improved dining experience. So bring your family and friends and let’s revive our poolside dining under the stars.

EXPERIENCING A SLICE OF THE NEW GOLF COURSE This July, members are also going to experience three new holes on the golf course. Like all other members, I am also excited but let me caution you that these three new holes will be very new, and for sure there will be some teething problems. Members are encouraged to exercise proper care of the new course to ensure we all have a good time on the greens.

CELEBRATING THE NATION’S BIRTHDAY

activities to celebrate the joyous occasion. From a pilates trial class to bowling specials and spa promotions, it will be the perfect time for you to celebrate with the family. Come September, check out our school holiday workshops and of course, the annual Oktoberfest which will be held on 29 September.

IMPLEMENTATION OF WHISTLEBLOWING POLICY As I shared at the EOGM, to ensure responsible corporate governance, we have put in a whistleblowing policy. This was implemented in June and we have set up a dedicated email account especially for this purpose. This can be found on the Club’s feedback and contact directory pages, and will be directly received by the Audit Sub-Committee. Rest assured the matter will be treated with utmost importance and confidence.

THANK YOU I wish to thank members, sponsors and friends of Seletar for their support and cooperation as we go through this renovation period for our golf course and F&B facilities. I enjoyed each and every interaction and exchange with our members and guests, and grateful when you supported our committee decisions and actions. Your mandate showed our committee was headed in the right direction. As we navigate a new milestone at this AGM, I wish everyone the best of luck as Seletar transits into a new members-club model. See you at the AGM.

Cheah Kim Teck Chairman

Come 9th August we will be celebrating Singapore’s 54th National Day and the Club has lined up a series of family

A

s part of our efforts to go green and reduce the Club’s environmental impact, we are progressively replacing the plastics around our Club with bio-degradable ones. Members can expect oxo-biodegradable plastics bags in our changing rooms that has been certified to meet stringent standards in being environmentally friendly. On the F&B front, we have ordered biodegradable food packaging, carrier bags and utensils such as forks, spoons, and wooden stirrers. Once our existing stock runs out, we will be using the recyclable ones. Members can also do their bit by cutting down on their usage of plastic bags and cutlery and/ or bringing their own recyclable bags. Thank you for being a part of our green movement!

he Soothing Strokes spa is now sporting a refreshed look. With a new coat of paint to reflect natural light back into the facility and make the facility feel more spacious, new blinds and blackout curtains (that will soon be installed), Seletarians will be able to soothe their senses in the lounge area with the natural light and greenery outside the window while still enjoying their privacy in optimal comfort. New Faces Hazimah Halim (Haz) Manager, Sports & Social

Nazirul Mubin Yunos (Naz) Executive, Sports & Social

I

f motorsports is Naz’s passion, food is Haz’s raison d’etre. And what unites the two is their appreciation of every minute component that makes something great, be it a great dish or a perfect lap. A self-confessed chicken rice connoisseur, Haz believes every component on the plate needs to be right, from the tenderness of the meat to the balance of the sauce. In a similar vein, Naz shares the importance of precision and efficiency in multiple factors to achieve a perfect lap, such as the point of braking or amount of acceleration. Both believe that it is in taking care of every detail that ultimately determines the success of an event or piece of work. Haz sees improving the quality of activities, events and facilities as her immediate priority to increase the vibrancy within the Club. It is this motivation to improve herself and her work that pushes her on every day. With her prior experience in events and marketing, she is constantly thinking up new ideas with her team. Naz, who has experience in industries such as hospitality and leisure sports, enjoys the challenge of managing every new event and fixing issues that arise. What will make them happiest is to see members utilising the Club’s facilities and enjoying the events!

Fixers The Mighty W hen the power trips, the toilet chokes, or the water leaks, who is the first person you would look for? For most, the maintenance team is the ever-ready problem-fixers. Indeed, reliability is at the heart of Seletar’s five-man maintenance team, each of them with their own strengths and field of experience. Seletar Buzz goes behind the scenes with the men behind the scenes!

The importance of teamwork and their service challenges The five strong men have worked together as a team for at least ten years, with Chuan and William having served the longest at the Club. The two will be receiving their 25-year long service award this year. With an average age of 55 years between the five of them, the oldest being Chuan at 67 years old, these men certainly do not seem their age, given how nimble and energetic they are. Given the risks involved in their daily job, such as exposure to occupational hazards like falls and electric shocks, safety practices are paramount, and these men have learnt to work together to support each other. It can be dangerous to change a light bulb alone for instance, especially when there is no one

around. The five men work rotating shifts, with at least two of them on duty at any one time, including public holidays. When things get busy, they could be running all over the place, and when they have to provide support at functions and for Tavern’s live bands, they can often be found working till midnight. The men have taken things in their stride, joking and bantering with each other to lift each other’s spirits. As the supervisor, Ong sagely said, “It’s important to respect each other, and not to hold grudges.” Chuan shares that his motivation comes from the sense of accomplishment after having fixed an issue, something the others concurred with. “We are not good with words, and sometimes may be too direct. We say it like it is,” Ong said. Their task-oriented nature in approaching problems can become a friction point when others misconstrue it as rudeness. This is where the Club’s service training comes in handy, as the staff gets to role play and learn how to communicate with others in different scenarios. The wonders of respect and appreciation William spoke for the team when he mentioned how even a simple thank-you is appreciated, as all too often people overlook and underrate the work they do. To motivate the team, Facilities & Projects Manager, Rick shared the principle that he leads by – listening to their views and discussing matters with them. “Patting them on the back when they have done a good job, giving feedback tactfully, chit chatting with them over lunch, simple things can make a difference when they feel respected and supported,” he said.

Konnichiwa, Japan!

O

ur 22 beautiful lady golfers enjoyed a galore of exhilarating golfing under endless blue skies, mouthwatering food and therapeutic shopping in Osaka and Shikoku, Japan, from 14 to 19 May 2019. The ladies played three satisfying rounds of golf at Naruto Country Club, Kotohira Country Club and J Classic Golf Club respectively, with J Classic touted as the toughest course to play.

The ladies enjoying a kaiseki meal.

And what’s a holiday without food? Some of the delectable fare included French fine dining, Kobe beef, and kaiseki (a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner). During their last night in Shikoku, the ladies held a cowgirl party night, bonding over games such as balloon darts. Suzy Bay, who was on her first overseas golf trip with the Club, said she enjoyed J Classic’s course the most for its tricky and challenging course. Singing nothing but praises for the well-organised trip, she said, “There was a lot of fun and laughter. Even when the air-conditioning at the hotel broke down, we still managed to laugh about it and it was still fun.” Game time!

olf and travel – the ultimate combo!

Our golfers embarked on a 7-day golfing escapade to the sun-soaked city of Perth on 3 June, organized and led by Vice-Captain Ho Juan Heng. Despite the cool weather, Seletarians received a warm welcome at the Inter-Club friendly with Western Australia Golf Club. It was hard not to fall in love with the city while teeing off amidst lush greenery, especially when the golfers witnessed the spectacular view of the city’s skyline at Hole 12. Day 3 saw more golfing action at The Links Kennedy Bay. Mount Lawley Golf Club drew excitement with their beautiful course, as did Melville Glades Golf Club, where our golfers had another Inter-Club friendly game. Apart from golfing, they also enjoyed the thrill of camel riding, wine tasting, eating fruits that they handpicked themselves, and a memorable dinner at Latitude 32. At Core Cider House, members got a high tasting five different ciders of varying flavours and alcohol content. They also took time to explore the city, capping off a satisfying trip with delightful fish and chips at the Fremantle Markets on the last day.

Nothing beats winding down over a drink with friends.

A Championship Course in the Making GOLF COURSE s e t a d p U REDEVELOPMENT

Newly Completed Holes Ready for Play! A new golfing experience awaits members this July, as we open three brand new holes for play from 1 July 2019, namely Holes 1, 2, and Composite Hole 5 (Hole 13). Don’t miss this opportunity to preview playing on the new course before it reopens fully in March next year! We would also like to seek members’ cooperation to restrict your buggies and trolleys to the buggy track on the new holes, so as to protect and allow the relatively new turf to mature. All the fairways and greens in Phase 1 (Holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 13, 15, 16) have been planted and are growing well, and we look forward to unveiling more new holes for play come August and September. Members can expect to play on six new holes from 15 August 2019 and nine new holes from 16 September 2019.

Water Management on the New Course We are delighted to share that the new and innovative irrigation system by Toro is already being installed progressively with each new hole. The water footprint of a golf course is significant, and in line with the government’s push for self-sufficiency with water utilization, the new irrigation system recommended by our hydrologist will ensure optimum usage of water.

Hole 3 on the left and Hole 15 on the right sharing a common lake. They will be exceedingly interesting and challenging to play!

Dramatic water features have been incorporated into the course design, and water elements will be one of the features in the course to create a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere for golfers. Work on a dramatic water feature behind the green of Hole 7 has commenced and is in progress. Members can look forward to a beautiful landscape once the course is ready.

Exclusive Members’ Preview Tour of the New Holes In June, preview tours of the golf course were specially organized for members. The members were able to see the makings of the golf course for themselves as they viewed the newly completed and redesigned greens and fairways. The members were brimming with excitement to play the new course! Member Jon Algot shared that he was very impressed by the beautiful and strategically positioned tee boxes and bridges, the shaping of the fairways, and the playability of the grass. He praised the idea of having guided tours of the course while it is under construction, as he walked away with a much better understanding of the complexity of the project and appreciation of the amount of detailed thought and preparation that went into making the project a success. We thank members for their support and feedback and look forward to unveiling the full course come March 2020!

Three Cheers for the Winners of the 34th In-House Bowling Mixed League

C

ongratulations to all the winners of our 34th In-House Bowling Mixed League! This year, novelty games were also thrown into the mix to inject even more fun and excitement. In the Baker competition, 5 members had to bowl as a team, with each player rotating to do two throws in each frame. The members also played Scotch Doubles, with two players in one team alternating shots. What made the games fun however, were the bowlers cheering each other on and their palpable camaraderie!

e v i t c A Stay & Age Well!

How to W

e speak with our Resident Coach Stacey Marcia De Silva on how to stay active and age well. Here are some great tips on keeping fit and making the most out of the gym. Why is exercise important as we grow older? Studies have shown that we start losing 8% of muscle mass every decade when we hit our forties. Low muscle mass can lead to an increase in falls risk, and the loss of bone density can cause bone fractures. Exercise can reap many benefits, such as:

24

SPORTS + SOCIAL

• Delaying the onset of muscle loss and loss of bone density. • Delaying the deterioration of coordination and ageing in ligaments and body functions, and improving balance and coordination. • Alleviating the onset of geriatric depression as endorphins (feel-good hormones) are released, triggering a positive feeling in the body. • Improving neuroplasticity, which in turn delays the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

What can I do at the gym or even at home? • Weight and resistance training e.g. lifting weights, push-ups • Cardiovascular exercise e.g. brisk walking • Exercises to improve flexibility and neuroplasticity e.g. stretching, pilates, yoga As we age, we tend to lose our sense of balance first, leading to falls. With better balance and core strength, we can reduce the tendency and frequency of falls, allowing us to continue enjoying our quality of life. As a general guide (The American College of Sports Medicine), the ratio of weight training you should do is around the age band you are in.

Example 1: 50 years old: 50% weights training (30 minutes); 50% cardiovascular training (30 minutes) Example 2: 62 years old: 60% weights training (40 minutes); 40% cardiovascular training (20 minutes) Example 3: 75 years old: 70% weights training (45-50 minutes); 30% cardiovascular training (10-15 minutes)

Which category do you fall under? Active Ager • If you do some form of exercise that makes you break into a sweat at least 30 minutes every day.

Moderately Active Ager • If you engage in some form of exercise at least three times a week.

Sedentary Ager • If you spend most of your time seated or are involved in little physical activity.

Exercise Recommendations Active Ager • Keep up your activity level. • Add resistance training and stretches to your exercise routine. • Customised based on your objectives.

Moderately Active Ager • Gentle to moderate activity is encouraged. These could be light weight lifting, push-ups against the wall or half-squats.

Sedentary Ager • Start with walking regularly, such as taking a 20 minutes brisk walk twice a week. • Increase the intensity of your workout incrementally to slowly build up your body to optimum activity. • Include some body weight functional exercises.

TIP: Do-it-yourself Dumbbells in just 5 minutes! No dumbbells at home? No worries! Create your own weights by using water bottles, books or backpacks filled with books.
