Dear Members, It is refreshing to be able to write this message after Singapore comes back out to Phase 3 (Heightened Alert), and we are happy to be able to resume dine-in at our F&B outlets once again. We emerged from the recent Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) largely unscathed. With the recent emergence of several clusters of infections around Singapore and tightening of measures from 16 May to 20 June this year, the government closed all dine-in facilities as well as other high-risk areas like the gym and communal facilities. Unlike last year’s circuit breaker however, we are glad that we were able to keep the Club open and more importantly, safe for members. Nevertheless, due to the tightened social restrictions, some of our planned activities had to be cancelled, especially the much-anticipated dinner with Chef Pung, and Father’s Day festivities. Thank you for continuously supporting our online Terrace Takeaway – we have kept this running since the circuit breaker last year and this time, the transition back to online ordering during the heightened alert was smoother and hassle-free for all, members and staff alike. Your support has helped soften the financial impact of the unexpected F&B closure and kept the morale of our F&B team up. Thankfully, our golfers could continue to enjoy their rounds of golf albeit with stricter measures. Most played their part and bore any inconveniences with much grace and patience; keeping to the split groups of 2 even within flights and ensuring no intermingling between flights. Our safe management officers were deployed daily to ensure members kept up with the stringent mask-wearing procedures throughout their golf games.
WHAT’S NEW: SELETAR ROOM AND MEMBERS’ E-STATEMENTS Our new Seletar Room opens to little fanfare amidst the heightened alert. Now that the government has once

again allowed the resumption of scaled-down weddings and receptions, we hope members will recommend our beautiful new ballroom to friends and family. We are also continually improving the Members Portal, and the latest feature to be rolled out will allow members to access their e-statements for the past 6 months. Recruiting and retaining staff in F&B had been the most challenging in this tight labour crunch, especially with the border restrictions. Digitalising of processes such as the self-ordering system has helped, even as we strive to maintain the same warm Seletar hospitality and service. We assure members we are actively trying to bolster our manpower and improve on our services, but some lapses can be expected. In these times, members’ understanding and encouragement mean the world to our frontliners. Where you can, do write in and give them a pat on the back. Your kind words go a long way in lifting their spirits.
A VIRTUAL 33RD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) successfully concluded on Saturday, 3 July 2021, and was an exciting first online-election for the Club. We look forward to working closely with the newly elected Management Committee (MC), who will take office from 1 August 2021. We would also like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to the outgoing MC for their support and contribution over the past years. Details of the virtual AGM can be found on the next few pages. Stay well, and stay safe!

AGM 2021:
FIRST-EVER ONLINE ELECTIONS
Our 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday 3 July 2021 was a landmark one, as we had our first-ever electronic voting of our Management Committee (MC) members for the term 2021/2023. The virtual event saw an all-time high of 1,032 members signing in on AGM day, and an overwhelming 21 candidates standing for 9 MC positions. Votes cast for the four ordinary MC positions tripled to over 3,000, with a tie for the fourth ordinary MC position. The combined number of AOB and financial questions received was also the highest in recent years. It was a decidedly muted affair at the Club on AGM day, and the number of members at the Terrace and Tavern throughout the day was a far cry from the buzz of pre-Covid elections. Only 65 members came to the 4 AGM Help Desks set up at the Club from 9am to 6pm for assistance, mainly for assurance that they were clicking the right buttons in the AGM portal. We are grateful for members’ participation and support, and look forward to working with the new MC who will formally take office from 1 August 2021. We would also like to thank the outgoing MC for their contributions over the past years.

Compliments to the (course) maintenance team for a great job done on the fairway. I am very impressed by the work they have done and maintaining it very clean. Only observation I have is that many players do not mend the pivots and ball marks. If everyone were to take responsibility in mending them, it will be an even great(er) place. Great to be a member of SCC. Photo: Erik Heng

I wish to compliment Mr Mugu, one of the service staff at the Terrace. My family and I had dinner at the Terrace on Sunday, 18 April. Mr Mugu attended to us, he was very patient and courteous despite the busyness of the usual dinner time crowd. He delivered service with a smile and lively humour. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner, kudos to Mr Mugu. - Margaret Ng, member

We are a family group of 5 adults and 1 child who were not able to have dinner at the Terrace due to the dress code restrictions. Hilton promptly suggested alternative ideas for us to pack and consume (the food) at the pool area. He patiently took our orders and delivered the food and drinks personally. His friendly personality turned an otherwise upsetting dinner experience into a happy gathering. Thank you very much Hilton! - Andy Chua

Celebrating
Women Power on the Greens
The fun never ends when our ladies get together! In conjunction with the nation dedicating 2021 as the Year of Celebrating SG Women, the Ladies Sub-committee took the opportunity to organize a golf game just for our ladies on 12 April 2021. This being the first ladies’ event after a year of battling the pandemic, the event was unsurprisingly fully subscribed. The ladies were greeted with a welcome gift and fun tikam tikam game, with creative prizes such as getting a par on a par 5. The ladies were split into two teams, Team Equality and Team Respect by random draw, with prizes for the winning team as well as for those dressed to the colour theme.
… How refreshing it was indeed. What jumped out at me was the amount of hard work and creativity that went into making the event happen for us. It would be ludicrous to call out names in acknowledgement because it's clear to me that it was a team effort. This spirit of synergy from what I witnessed should not be underestimated in terms of performance success. I would like to recognise and thank everyone regardless of pecking order, from the Golfing Office (course marshals, buggy boys, interns included) to the Ladies Golfing Committee.
Begin a member of many golf clubs in Singapore, I was particularly pleased that the Ladies Committee had, in line with the Singapore government to mark 2021 as the Year of Celebrating SG Women, taken this opportunity to empower women golfers and organise the SG Women’s Day Golf at Seletar on 12 April. Like many, I was in awe of the warm hospitality… I am greatly appreciative of all the efforts and team coordination to make such a memorable and remarkable event. Like many of the ladies members, we look forward to have many more such events in the future.

Seletar Juniors Come Up Top
IN NATIONAL SCHOOL GAMES 2021
Text by Kuk Hun Yi / Photos by Eng Chiew Teo
In the National School Games 2021 (NSG) for golf, Seletar Junior and Singapore Sports School studentathlete Eng Wei Jin played a scintillating 3 under 69 to win the Boys ‘A’ division by 5 strokes over his nearest competitor. Equally impressively in the Girls ‘B’ division was Seletar junior and Nanyang High School student Angel Lim, who took the Girls ‘B’ division title by 3 stokes over her nearest competitor, carding a 1 over par 73. After a hiatus of one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the NSG for golf resumed this year as a reduced one-day event held on 20 April 2021 at Laguna National Golf & Country Club. Due to safe distancing concerns, the NSG tournament format was reduced to a one-day event, with individuals from the same school grouped together in the same flights. Starting from the 10th tee, despite dropping a shot on his first hole, Wei Jin made the turn at 2 under, helped in part by an eagle on the par 5 Hole 15. Mixing 3 birdies with 2 bogeys on the back 9 holes, Wei Jin closed out his competition comfortably. When reflecting on his
achievement, Wei Jin remarked, “I’m really happy with this win. It’s my final year with the Sports School so I’m glad I was able to win for the school one last time. The NSG this year was only a one-day event, and it’s anybody’s game, so I made sure that I focused on my short game and accuracy prior to the event. I’m glad it all paid off.” On her part, Angel played steady golf and made the turn at 2 over. On the second 9 holes, Angel recovered with 2 birdies to steady the ship and pull away from her closest competitors from MGS, with an overall 1 over score. Reflecting on her play, Angel remarked, “I’m glad that I kept calm and stayed focused throughout the game and recovered in the back nine. I am really thankful and happy that I was able to end my final year of ‘B’ division with a win.” In the Boys ‘B’ division, Seletar junior and ACS Independent student Ethan Lim came in 1st runner-up with a 3 over 75, while in the Girls ‘B’ division, Seletar junior and MGS student Jillian Kuk came in 2nd runnerup with a 6 over 78. Well done to all our Seletar juniors! We hope junior golf in our schools and club will continue to flourish and grow from strength to strength.

SELETAR COURSE REVIEW
Built at the start of the Circuit Breaker, the newly renovated 18-hole golf course at Seletar Country Club has been mostly exclusive to members. National golf coach Matt Ballard had the opportunity to visit during the SGA’s HSBC YGC event and is impressed by its overall quality and conditions.
A
fter the recent HSBC Youth Golf Challenge at Seletar Country Club, national golf coach Matt Ballard was impressed with the new 18-hole layout that was completed right at the beginning of the coronavirus Circuit Breaker period in April 2020 after an 18-month renovation period and a cost of $24 million. The Australian had played on numerous professional tours for 14 years and had coached former world number one Adam Scott, travelling with him to top golf courses around the world. His keen eye brings in a perspective not just from the aesthetic standpoint of golf design but also in terms of playability. As it stands, the new layout, as designed by the world renowned GolfPlan team of David Dale and Kevin Ramsey, has a unique British isle flavour that offers rolling acres of lush greenery lined with the new Zoysia Zeon turf grass, and great water features to add a touch of tranquillity and memorability.
These additional water elements were driven mainly by a need to become 100 per cent self-sustaining in water – in other words, it needed to expand the on-site lake system to store enough water to get through the dry season without taking anything from either groundwater, or the government’s sources. Golfers can look forward to playing against the unique backdrop of the dramatic waterfall at the iconic Hole 7. Holes 3 and 15, two par-4 holes affectionately known as the Twin Jewels, was creatively designed to run parallel to each other. A water feature sitting behind the green at Hole 18 uplifts the spirits of golfers upon their triumphant return. For Matt, the new Seletar layout is challenging but fair with such strong holes as the 12th and 15th having water and bunkers guarding the greens. The Par 3s are also well-designed and quality iron shots are required to hit the greens. “At the same time, there are risk-andreward holes where players had to
CLUBHOUSE
decide if they should play aggressively or conservatively, like the 7th and 10th holes. There were eagles made on these holes during the tournament but some big numbers were also recorded,” observes Ballard. “There were some tricky “Sunday” pin positions during the week which caught many players off-guard when they tried to attack them. We like to use the traffic light analogy, which is ‘Green’ light to attack the pin, ‘Amber’ light to be slightly cautious and ‘Red’ light to denote a dangerous hole location; do not go directly at pin. There were a good mix of greens and ambers and certainly some reds out there on the golf course,” says Matt. “Over the three days of competition, I have seen the course set up with lots of versatility to make either easier or tougher with the potential to vary the tee positions on some holes and the pin locations can really make it feel like the players are playing a different course each day “Secondly, I feel the venue could cater to a larger professional event easily also by making greens firmer, faster and growing the rough longer or subsequently softening the greens and reducing the rough to cater for amateur tournaments, which makes the design a truly classic tournament venue,” opines the veteran golf coach. Overall, the new Seletar layout offers tricky pin positions with firm and breezy conditions that all come together to provide a challenging tournament experience. The venue asks golfers to hit every club in their bag and challenges them in more ways than one. To exemplify the challenge at Seletar, during the HSBC YGC, the field consisted of the top juniors and amateurs in the country and only one player - National Ranking Game winner, Justin Kuk managed to finish the week under par. From the coaching standpoint, Matt feels that the tournament conditions highlighted the importance of course strategy, shot selection, short game and lag putting, in order to succeed here.

TIPS TO ELEVATE YOUR
Home Dining Experience Given how often we ‘ta-pao’ food to go and dine at home these days, there is no reason not to feel good and have fun while we are doing it. Here are 4 tips for you to elevate your next home dining experience!
Serve in Style with Proper Plating We tend to “eat” with our eyes first, which is why food presentation is more important than you might think. Transfer your takeaway food to your prized or favourite tableware and use those crockery that you have been saving for that special occasion. Creating height (or length) on your plate can also enhance the visual aesthetics of your food. The main ingredient in your dish should take up the most space on your plate.
Set the Right Ambience Missing your favourite restaurant? You can recreate the ambience such as by adjusting your lighting, setting up your dining table, or laying a classy tablecloth. Warm colours and even candles add a touch of elegance. Try to avoid harsh lights.
Play Some Music Whether you prefer your music soft or loud, playing your favourite music can help make meal times more enjoyable. There are plenty of dining playlists available free on Spotify such as “Fine Dining Music” – simply do a search!
Pair Your Food with Some Wine If you are looking for ideas, we have a wide selection of liquor deals at great prices. Check them out at www.seletarclub.com.sg/take2/.
CRAVING THE SELETAR TASTE? Simply order your Terrace Takeaway online at https://www.seletarclub.com.sg/take2/ and our staff will call you to confirm your order and collection time, subject to availability.
