TOWARDS SERVICE EXCELLENCE

Meet our F&B Service Crew Leaders Seletar Buzz speaks with two of our most familiar faces in the Seletar F&B scene – Chong Lai Teng (LT) and Karen Goh Mey Fong (K), and finds out about the challenges they face on the frontline. What do you enjoy most about working at Seletar Country Club? LT: It has a really good working environment with nice and friendly members. Most importantly, it is the sense of camaraderie that our F&B staff share with one another. K: I like interacting with members and my colleagues. I also feel a sense of accomplishment when guests are happy with my service!

Any tips on providing good service? LT: In the service line, having a ready smile Sincere Smile can make all the difference. For us F&B Tactful staff, it is important to constantly be Attentive on alert mode and have a 360 degrees Responsible view of the entire dining area in case anyone needs our attention. Having a good memory will be advantageous too, as we can then provide personalised services to our customers based on their orders from earlier visits. From left to right: Lai Teng and Karen

K: For me, I face customers like how I would face a mirror. I think it is important to treat our customers like how we want ourselves to be treated. I will make sure to treat them with respect and take the initiative to remember any special orders from returning customers so that they can feel well cared for. As service staff, we should also maintain a polite and courteous image at all times.

Tell us what your hobbies are outside of work. LT: I love to sing and play with my darling daughter, Giselle. And no, she is not named after the model Gisele Bundchen! (laughs) I will facetime her whenever I am free and that is what I look forward to the most every day! K: I like to bring my dog Happy for walks and play with him. He’s only about 1 year old so he is full of energy!

Can you tell us about your first day at work in Seletar? LT: It was a nightmare for me! I couldn’t speak English at first and had to struggle quite a bit when conversing with English speaking customers. Thankfully, my colleagues were really helpful and I eventually picked up the language. See, now I can even do this interview in English! (laughs)

K: It was similar for me as well on the first day of work at Seletar. I could speak some English, but they were mostly broken! Luckily Seletar members were very accommodating towards me, and some of them even taught me how to speak English properly!

What do you do when you encounter a difficult situation whilst serving customers? LT: Make use of WOW to serve Warm Greetings customers! I learnt that Outstanding Moments acronym from our Service Winning Goodbyes Training Programme. Usually, customers just want to be acknowledged and are not out to intentionally make things difficult for us. We should always find out their side of the story and focus on solving the problem. Of course, if an apology is due, we should offer it as well. K: We should always speak to them in a respectful tone and show good attitude. If you don’t lose your temper at all and are able to act professionally, even the angriest customers will eventually simmer down. If we are in the wrong, we should also not hesitate to apologise.

How do you motivate your staff or encourage them when they are down? LT: I will always try my best to guide them whenever I can. Sometimes I find that sharing my past experiences help in giving them an idea of what they can do in tricky situations. If they feel upset or demoralised, consoling them and providing words of encouragement is very important. What they need at times could just be a listening ear and some moral support. K: I try to console them when they feel down. I always tell them not to take things to heart because mistakes are part and parcel of life and it allows us to learn and grow. I think it’s important not to bring your work troubles home because at the end of the day, we should always keep work and home separate.

Sometimes, customers will call for my attention because I know their special orders by heart. It heartens me because I know that my efforts have paid off.

Honesty is the Best Policy! Ever lost your valuables before? How many times did you manage to retrieve them? Recently, two of our cleaners hired from an external vendor displayed exemplary acts of honesty.

Gopalakrishnan A/L Tulasinathan, known as Gopal, found a handphone in the Men’s Changing Room and immediately handed it over to Attendant Siva who was on duty. The handphone was later returned to its rightful owner. Said Gopal, “It was the first time something like that happened. I just knew that I had to quickly return the phone because otherwise the owner will be very worried!”

Everytime I receive a commendation, it motivates me to do better. This shows that I have made a difference to someone's day and I'm glad I get recognised for my hard work. - Lai Teng

On a separate occasion, Vingeedasalam S/O Muthusamy, known as Muthu, found a wallet with $126 worth of cash and credit cards at the driving range. He passed the wallet to our Shift Leader Mr Chua who then ensured that the wallet was handed over to the owner. On behalf of Seletar Country Club, we would like to commend these two honest men! Kudos to you!

Seletar Country Club – Good Reviews Worldwide! It looks like guests from all over the world are just as pleased with Seletar Country Club as we are! On internationally renowned site Tripadvisor.com, we have received a total of 13 reviews – all of which were positive. The reviews came from guests ranging from countries such as Australia, to United Kingdom. Most of these reviews highlighted our great food and service, well-maintained course as well as general cleanliness of the entire Club. Keep up the good work, Seletar!

What makes the golfing experience more pleasant is the overall atmosphere. The people are really friendly and helpful. The food is good and the overall setting feels like a park. It is so much better than many of the other busy businessminded golf clubs in Singapore.

The Club is set in a large tranquil area with beautiful landscape seldom seen in land scarce Singapore. The staff are super friendly at the poolside counters. The dressing rooms lack for nothing and are scrupulously clean. There is also a wide selection of food and beverage. Truly a great getaway from the busy city life!

I have eaten here more than ten times. The food is consistently good and service is friendly and prompt. Small bites accompanied by beer and cocktails are especially enjoyable in the Tavern lawn during sunset.

COMPLIMENTS FOR A JOB WELL DONE! I was recently impressed by two golf marshals who rendered assistance to me after I experienced the side effects of my medication. On 6 June, I was taking a 9-hole walk when I realised that my golf driver’s cover was missing. I was very impressed with the quick arrival of MARSHAL KUMAR who helped me retrieve my cover immediately after I called the office. On 7 June, I was again taking my morning 9-hole walk when I received a call from Johnson Poh that I had left my car window down. In no time, MARSHAL JUMSARI came to me and instead of disrupting my play, he took my keys to wind up my car window for me. I really appreciate the extra length that he had gone to ensure the safety of my car and belongings. Certified Lifesavers! To ensure that our staff are constantly well prepared for any emergencies that arise, we have scheduled regular first aid training on top of the mandatory fire drill exercises. In April, selected members of our staff were taught how to do CPR and operate the AED machine. We were also taught the correct ways to bandage casualties for the different types of injuries sustained. Refresher courses were conducted simultaneously for those who had already undergone the training last year. Although we hope we will not have to use the AED machine, we never know when this skill may come in handy!

Welcoming Our New Members!

Hello, new members! Welcome to the Seletar family! On 16 May, our Management Committee greeted close to 100 new members and their spouses at the New Members’ Golf and Dinner event, with Seletar Band providing music entertainment. The interactive golf game and dinner allowed our new members a chance to get to know each other better, and many of them did just that! During the dinner, our General Manager Philip Tan and Chairman Cheah Kim Teck took to the stage and declared that we will continue making this Club a vibrant place for all. At the end of the event, members even got to go home with their free copies of Seletar’s History and Heritage Book. Just look at the smiles on all of their faces! We are sure they all had a wonderful night. Perhaps new member Bobby Wee summed it up best when he said this, “This event is awesome! Well done, guys!”

Singapore Junior Golf Championship 2018

While the rest of Singapore were concerning themselves with the historic Trump Kim summit held in mid June, Seletar Country Club was busy playing host to talented young individuals from around the planet during that same period. For the third year in a row, we are proud to be the chosen venue to hold The Singapore Junior Golf Championship 2018 that saw participation from 15 nations. During the opening ceremony, Singapore Golf Association (SGA) acting General Manager Jerome Ng paid homage to the wonderful camaraderie shared amongst the competitors and stressed the importance of this tournament in encouraging more junior golfers to come to the fore. Sam Yang of Yang Foundation, who was the main sponsor this year, reiterated that such tournaments would serve as a good starting ground for aspiring young golfers to chalk up experience. After four days of intense competition, our Singapore team of Inez Ng and Hailey Loh emerged as champions of the team event, followed closely by the Malaysian team of Winnie Ng and Foong Zi Yu. The overall Girls Champion went to Malaysian Winnie Ng, who posted a score of 218. Singaporeans Hailey Loh and Inez Ng claimed the first and second runners up positions with scores of 224 and 229 respectively. The overall Boys Champion was won by local boy Donovan Lee with a score of 140. Following closely behind was another local, Tommy Tan, who also scored 140 and India national Sunhit Bishnoi, who recorded 142.

At the closing ceremony, we ended the event with a big bang! The lucky draw was not the usual run of the mill but rather, one with a twist that saw winners going on stage to dance to the tune of the wildly popular Baby Shark song and even a cat walk by Brandon Han! Romancing Jeju

Superwoman on the go!

Jeju, an island situated south of Korea, has made its name as a romantic honeymoon destination after many popular Korean dramas were filmed there (think Winter Sonata and Boys over Flowers). From 19 to 24 May, our golfers travelled to this island of love and enjoyed a brief respite from the sweltering heat in Singapore. They golfed at the beautiful Pinx Golf Club as well as Arden Hill Resort and Golf. The former boasts a World Top 100 course with spectacular sights of the mountain and sea that golfers enjoyed so much!

Some of the attractions that our golfers visited included the famous Dol Hareubang statue, which translates to ‘grandfather’ or ‘senior’ in English. The statue is known for its association with fertility and attracts many visitors worldwide for this purpose alone. However, our golfers were simply happy to snap photos with these cutelooking statues!

Our golfers also visited the Manjanggul Lava Tube, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in the history of volcanos. Although the cave was dim and the terrain was challenging to navigate at times, our golfers persevered and they managed to complete the journey. Rock on the indomitable spirit, Seletarians! Team Seletar MARCHES INTO THE FINAL Team Seletar has continued the winning streak, marching into the SGA Interclub League Final after a hard fought playoff win over Raffles Country Club in the Semi-Final! Victory was made even sweeter as golfing veterans Maria Teresa Wong and Nina Um played the winning shots after scores between the two clubs were tied at 7.5. The wonderful result will see us face National Service Resort & Country Club (NSRCC) in a repeat grand finale of last year. The final will be held at Sentosa Golf Course on 8 July. En route to the final, we edged out fourth seed Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) with a score of 8-7 in the 4th leg, before comfortably beating Sentosa Golf Club 9-6 during the 5th leg to progress into the knockout stages. The quarter finals saw an assured performance put in by our team as we thrashed Changi Golf Club 9.5-5.5. With the consistency shown in the string of wins, it surely looked as though Team Seletar was peaking at the right time! Let us cheer on the team together in the final! Onward Seletarians! We are brothers in armsâ&#x20AC;Ś and winners together!

Trevor Ng Emerges Victorious! Seletarian Trevor Ng has bagged yet another win at the 2018 NSRCC Junior Open Championships. This young talent won the Best Gross Winner Trophy with a three-round total of 232 strokes, with an eight-stroke lead over runner-up Yap Zhe Rong in the Boys ‘B’ Division. Congratulations, Trevor!

Let’s keep the inter-club friendlies coming! This time, we played host to Warren Golf and Country Club and it was great to see the camaraderie between the two clubs. This friendly was made all the more significant as our Club is scheduled for closure in the following months ahead for renovation works. In the meantime, members from both clubs golfed to their hearts’ content and even participated gamely in celebratory toasts as well as a wefie together! With our local band Los Hombres providing music entertainment, everyone capped off the event in good spirits, which definitely helped to strengthen friendship bonds! Mingling with our friends from Warren!
