FIRST WORDS

Dear Members Time flies when you are having fun – and after the festivities of the new year, we will soon see the closing of our 2017/2018 financial year this March. Based on the Club’s performance these past 11 months, we’ve had an eventful year. Nonetheless with everyone’s support, we met our financial targets and should close the year on a satisfactory note. I would also like to thank members for their overwhelming support during the membership topup exercise – most of our members made full lumpsum payment and we had almost 100% and 75% optins respectively from both our Golfing and Social members. With this and our accumulated reserves, we are able to carry out the renewal of our land lease and renovation of the golf course and dining outlets.
CHALLENGING TIMES AHEAD Moving into the new fiscal year, while we are excited with the redevelopments taking place, there are several challenges we need to anticipate which will affect the Club’s reserves and financial health.
SELETAR BUZZ 2
Firstly, the renewal of the land lease; we have received an offer from SLA on our land lease renewal price and are currently discussing with our valuer Knight Frank on the premium amount. If all goes well, we are expecting to pay the premium by the second quarter of this financial year. Next of course is the upgrading of our golf course, which will consume a substantial amount of reserves. Once we liquidate our investments to support our renewal project, we will lose a large portion of our investment income. On top of that, operational income will dip with the closure of the golf course and F&B outlets during the renovation period. Finally the declining Jackpot revenue following new government regulations. We can expect these low returns on Jackpot to be the norm henceforth, and therefore will need to review its operations and viability moving forward into the future. These will impact our revenues and bottom line for our fiscal year ending March 2019 and the next few years beyond, thus we will need to brace ourselves for a relatively tight financial position till we rebuild our finances in time.
MAR/APR 2018
FIRST WORDS
STAYIN’ ALIVE During this period, Management will spare no effort in driving our revenue and managing expenses. We will also step up our sports and social activities to maintain the vibrancy of the Club. In fact the Management has already lined up an exciting calendar of events from the second quarter of this year. I look forward to seeing you and your family enjoying yourselves at these events.
GOLF COURSE RENOVATION UPDATE We are still on track to start renovation of the golf course in the last quarter of this year and members will be kept updated as we move along. Meantime in preparation, we need to make good certain areas of the Club, particularly the Seletar Water Sports Centre (SWSC), to be returned to the authorities. In line with this, the SWSC will cease operations from June this year. The Club will organize a farewell party at the SWSC prior to this, and we look forward to seeing you at the event.
MAJOR THUNDERSTORM IN THE GOLF COURSE On 30 January, over 40 trees in our golf course were uprooted due to a major thunderstorm that hit the northern part of Singapore. The course was in disarray and had to be temporarily closed for the staff to clear the fallen trees and debris from the storm.
Members were highly concerned – but with everyone’s cooperation, we managed to clear them in two days. A visual safety sweep was also conducted to ensure that the remaining trees were stabilized and safety checks were done to ensure they pose no danger to golfers. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and support during this time.
GOING CAShless from 1 may Lastly – I am glad to share two good news. One, that we have achieved our Biz Safe Level 3 certification – and this brings us one step closer to aligning our service and work processes to national standards. Secondly, in line with national efforts, Seletar Country Club is going cashless from 1 May onwards. By now you should all have received our new smart membership cards, which allows you to just “tap and pay” for your expenses in the Club. The Management Committee would like to strongly encourage members to support this initiative, as it would help reduce risks related to cash handling and streamline our administrative processes. In future, this will also be our main mode of payment and identification in the Club, so be sure to bring your new membership card with you at all times.
MEMBERS’ SUPPORT MOST IMPORTANT As we transform the Club, your support is most crucial – so please extend your cooperation to our staff. We also have the annual Swimming Carnival lined up on this 31 March, which like last year is injected with a fun Easter theme. So bring your family and friends, and let’s have some splashing fun together. I look forward to seeing you in the Club.

TOWARDS SERVICE EXCELLENCE
THUMBS UP to creating positive experiences in Seletar!
Empowering Our Service Mentors Now that you have met our service mentors, you are probably wondering what the next step was for them. As we ushered the festive season in December, our team of service mentors participated in an engaging training session aimed to empower them with the knowledge and confidence to handle service challenges. The session opened with a brief refresher on Seletar Service Excellence Programme (SEP) followed by our STAR service values (Sincere smile, Tactful, Attentive, Respectful). The training was focused on role-playing scenarios adapted from members’ feedback. Thanks to their sharing and enthusiastic participation, our service mentors gained insights into the challenges faced by their colleagues in other departments while learning positive service practices from each other. The Club will continue to conduct similar trainings for our staff and look forward to members’ constant support and encouragement.
Good news!

We have now officially attained the bizSAFE level 3 certification! And the journey towards Service Excellence continues!
TOWARDS SERVICE EXCELLENCE
Service Excellence on the Front Line It is no secret that excelling in the service industry requires lots of hard work and patience. Seletar Buzz speaks with two of our most senior golfing staff, Eliza Kaswan (Liza) and Hazel Soo, and find out how they do it.
From left to right: Eliza Kaswan and Hazel Soo
How long have you been working in Seletar Country Club? Liza (L): Almost 28 years! I have been with Seletar Country Club even before it shifted to our current location. Hazel (H): I have been here since 1994, about 24 years.
What did you work as before coming here? L: I was initially working at an American oil company before coming here. I was a receptionist there too. H: For me, I was working in the Hotel service industry handling reservations. There was definitely a lot less face to face interactions at my previous job compared to now.
SELETAR BUZZ 8
What is it like working at Seletar Country Club? L: I really enjoy working here! Sometimes, members will take the time to chat with me or joke that I am “old already”. I will tease them too, and it livens up the atmosphere. Some members will also encourage me to stay for a longer time. I think I have been very obedient so far! H: It has been rather good so far! Most members are friendly and easygoing. Some of them would even joke with me, saying that they don’t want to join the ladies’ flight if there isn’t enough space in their own flight. Of course they are only joking though!
MAR/APR 2018
TOWARDS SERVICE EXCELLENCE
What keeps you motivated at work? L: Definitely members’ appreciation of our hard work. Seeing members satisfied with the service I provide makes my day. H: I enjoy meeting different members on a daily basis. As a receptionist, there are no two days that are the same, and it keeps me going. We get to learn how to deal with different types of people and I feel a sense of accomplishment when members are happy with what we do!
You’ve both been consistently receiving compliments from members. What’s your secret to good service? L: When we encounter frustrated members, the most important thing is to stand in their shoes and understand where they are coming from. That way, we will avoid further misunderstandings. Usually, members are upset for a valid reason. As frontline service staff, it is our responsibility to help our members and get them to calm down. H: Be professional, be gentle and calm but firm. Another important thing is to think quickly on your feet, as the right reaction to a problem is key to solving it. When members tell you their problem, you have to give them your undivided attention to understand what they are really asking for. Patience and empathy will go a long way in providing good service.
When we encounter frustrated members, the most important thing is to stand in their shoes and understand where they are coming from. That way, we will avoid further misunderstandings.
Both of you have been in the service industry for a really long time. What advice would you give to your younger colleagues if they wish to excel in this industry? L: I would advise them to take on more than their job scope and try to do things by themselves. That way, they can pick up as much as they can in a short time. For me, I usually ask my new colleagues to watch how we do things before trying it out for themselves. H: To be honest, I feel that each generation has their own talents. I would say that I learn as much from my younger colleagues as they do from me. In fact, my younger colleagues will often teach me technology tricks so that I can complete my work faster on the computer.
What do you like to do on your off days? L: At my age, I am easily contented. Catching up with family and friends is my favourite thing to do. During my off days, I will make it a point to go house visiting and spend time with my loved ones. Otherwise, shopping with my daughter sounds good too! H: I like to cook. One of the dishes I love to cook most is Pork Chop. My children love it too! Before I got married, I really could not cook at all. My fish would stick to the frying pan and become *chaota (burnt). Now, cooking has become second nature to me.

FESTIVE CELEBRATION
“The Christmas decorations at Seletar Country Club this year were stunning. Much effort and thought must have been spent in creating the unique and scintillating displays. Noticeably in recent years, innovative decorations at the Club to welcome the various festive seasons have indeed been impressive. The management and staff involved in the Club decorations should get a huge pat on the back for their creativity and enterprise. Well done. Keep up the great work!” – George Pasqual
FESTIVE MAKEOVER Remember how vibrant and lively our Club looked during the festive season? From glowing reindeers and snowmen on sleighs during Christmas to auspicious cherry blossoms, pussy willows
and
streamers
during
Chinese New Year, it was indeed a sight to behold! For many consecutive years, our decorations have received positive feedback from members and guests. They have complimented the tasteful and stylish arrangements of our props and we are proud to say that all of the decoration work and designs were done by our own staff! Heading the decoration work is our Sports and Social Manager Rauzi Adawiyah, who guides her team with her hands-on approach. We hope to continue this positive trend and make our Club a beautiful and welcoming place for all our members!

It was a clash of the very best as Seletar’s top golfers competed in the annual Medal of Medals. Made up of past champions of
Anthony Lim, winner of Hole-in-One
the Mercedes-Benz monthly medals, we witnessed some topnotched swings along the way. Despite the competitive nature of this event, our golfers had plenty of fun joking and goofing with one another during both the golf game and dinner. It was wonderful seeing Seletarians start off the year in such high spirits! Of course, this success would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors, Mercedes-Benz and Singapore Airlines. Anthony Lim, who scored a Hole-in-One in the July monthly medal, ended up winning the grand prize of a pair of Business Class air tickets to London.

Flight When we started this project in 2013, we knew little about butterflies. It was fortunate that we had advice from some of the more experienced butterfly enthusiasts like Mr Richard Ong. Our initial plan was to accommodate 60 butterfly species, about 25% of the total number of species in Singapore. Look past our pristine golf course and facilities, and you will find that there are many pleasant surprises in store for you. One of them is Seletar’s butterfly garden, a nature paradise just waiting to be explored. Located next to the Sports Complex, it had very humble beginnings. Back in 2013, there was an active push by our Club to become more nature-oriented. We embraced the diverse wildlife that saw many different plants and animals make their home on our golf course, yet we also saw the opportunity to create more on the land that we had. With the creation of a wildlife habitat within the Club in mind, the idea of a Butterfly Garden was born.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The idea took flight when Foo Jit Leang, a member and avid nature enthusiast, took up the challenge of creating a Butterfly Garden on Club grounds. As a driver of many nature-related initiatives at the Club, he has contributed many photos and articles on birds. Dealing with butterflies was something completely new to him, and he had to do so from scratch with zero knowledge on them.
– Foo Jit Leang
AWARD-WINNING GARDEN The Butterfly Garden has since surpassed all expectations, recording a whopping total of 112 butterfly species, of which 60 of them are breeding species. This is the highest number of sightings at any one location in Singapore. To date, the garden has received many accolades. This includes the Gold Community Bloom award by NParks in 2014, the Audubon Certification in 2015 and the Best Environmental and Biodiversity Garden in NParks Community in Bloom 2016. Said Jit Leang during the 2017 year-end review of the garden, “Our garden biodiversity remained very rich, with several new species of birds, moths and other minibeasts sighted. In 2017, we also continued to host groups in our Garden, give talks to schools and participated in several NParks events such as the Festival of Biodiversity.” The success of Seletar’s Butterfly Garden also set the path for butterfly conservation efforts elsewhere. A group of our Seletar nature volunteers, headed by Jit Leang, aided in the setting up of the Bukit Panjang Butterfly Garden in 2017. It turned out to be a resounding success too. Our Butterfly Garden has made its name amongst nature enthusiasts. It has even been covered by our local press, The Straits Times. It was a journey that was at times challenging and arduous, but for the most part, it was one that was rewarding and remains a huge source of pride at our Country Club. Here’s to even greater days ahead for our beautiful Butterfly Garden!

SPECIAL FEATURE
Getting to know some of the wildlife in our Garden… Blue Pansy – a common sunloving species, usually found in open areas along Seletar Club Road
Green Baron – relatively rare in Singapore but often seen at our Garden due to presence of its favourite food plant, the Singapore Rhododenron and its host plant, the Malayan Mistletoe
Painted Jezebel – found commonly in Singapore, it usually flies high at treetop level, descending only to feed on flowering shrubs
Common Birdwing – one of the largest butterflies in Singapore, its flight has frequently been compared to that of birds, gliding high at treetops
Variable Ladybird – a common ladybird that is variable in appearance (hence its name) and feeds on aphids and mealy bugs, making an excellent biological agent for pest control
Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker – shown feeding on our Lantana fruit, this common bird is difficult to spot due to its small size and fondness for hiding deep within the plant canopy
Wasp Campsomerinae – a common wasp species that is an external parasite to beetles that live in soil or decaying vegetation

GETTING TO KNOW our Chinese Chef! Meet our very own chef from Eagle’s View – Chef Tan San Meng! This veteran master in Chinese cuisine has been honing his craft for 42 years, yet who would have thought that he nearly became a mariner? Seletar Buzz caught up with him to find out more about his cooking journey and how it has shaped his creations today!
Was it always your childhood ambition to become a chef? Not at all. To be honest, I nearly became a mariner! My father was a mariner, and many of my friends chose that path too. We all had little education and were illiterate, so going out to sea seemed like the best choice. But I just could not bear the thought of being away from home for so long. That was how I entered the kitchen – a practice ground right in my own home!
Chef Tan with his team in Eagle's View
What difficulties and challenges did you encounter along the way? In those days, many aspiring chefs learnt their trade from their father or grandfather. For me, none of my immediate family members were chefs, so I knew absolutely nothing about cooking at first!

"To me, the best thing about being a chef is that you do not have to be perfect, but you just have to create the perfect taste for each customer." What do you like to do in your free time? I like going to the library. Sometimes, I can spend hours in the library just looking at recipe books. It gives me ideas for new dishes. I also enjoy strolling leisurely with my wife.
Without a trusted mentor to count on, I had to work doubly hard to catch up with others. It was a constant challenge but you just had to grit your teeth and pick up as much as you could. Can you tell us about a particular turning point in your career? Once, I was alone in a restaurant kitchen when I found a handwritten recipe book in a cupboard. I was so shocked when I saw it! Recipe books are like the lifeblood of chefs. How often do you find it lying around like that? Anyway, I read through all the special recipes and was so engrossed in it I didn’t notice someone coming into the kitchen.
Who wears the hat at home? You or your wife? Actually, my 5-year-old grandson wears the hat at home. He is my largest critic! Whenever the dish I cook is not up to his liking, he would make a face and declare loudly, “Not nice!” If he approves of the dish, he would flash us a thumbs up and say, “Good!” Children are very intuitive and have a super keen sense of taste. Sometimes, I would let him try my new dishes just to see if they pass the test. At home, I do all the cooking. My wife hardly cooks. When I’m at work, she would rather go outside to buy food than prepare something to eat!
Then I heard someone asking me, “What are you doing with my book?!” I thought I was dead meat the moment I heard his voice. Thank goodness the senior chef did not punish me. Instead, he encouraged me to copy down his recipes and learn as much as I could! From then on, I looked up to him as a mentor and he taught me so much. Thinking back, it was all thanks to him that I picked up my skills as an apprentice. Heaven’s divinity, you might call it. What do you enjoy most about being a chef? I love analysing different types of dishes. There are so many adjustments you can make for even a simple dish – the marinating, the seasoning, and the preparation methods. To me, the best thing about being a chef is that you do not have to be perfect, but you just have to create the perfect taste for each customer.
Can you tell us about a dish that you love? If I can only pick one dish, it will be Nasi Briyani. I love Indian cuisine and how they use different spices to create such strong flavours. Don’t ask me how to cook them though, I may be a chef but I only specialise in Chinese cuisine!
