Dear Fello w Seletarians FINANCIAL YEAR ENDING 31.3.2021 Seletar Country Club has gone through a very challenging and unprecedented financial year ending (FYE) 31 March 2021. The Club was caught up in the COVID-19 pandemic and closed from April to June 2020 as part of Singapore’s Circuit Breaker measures. Restrictions were put in place on our main revenue generating activities – golfing, F&B and social events. Safe distancing and safe management practices remained in place even with the reopening of Phase 3 in December last year. In short – the Club is not yet back to normal, and certain revenue opportunities remain suspended. Our operating revenue for FYE 31 March 2021 is expected to be marginally better

than the preceding year, when both the golf course and Seletar Terrace/Tavern were undergoing renovations. I am pleased to inform all members that the Club is projecting a positive EBID (earnings before interest & depreciation) – mainly due to government grants received; in contrast to a negative position a year ago. I am equally pleased to report that the Club’s cash position is now much healthier than a year ago. This has been made possible when our remaining investment in NOL bond of $8 million was fully redeemed by CMA CGM Asia Pacific Ltd on 14 December 2020. The Club has liquidated all its investment securities and has made no new investment presently; and our outstanding short-term loan with DBS has been fully repaid. A more comprehensive Treasurer’s Report will be issued once the accounts have been audited.
NEW FY 2021/2022 & FINANCIAL STRATEGY We are moving forward to a new financial year 2021/2022 with caution and prudence. The COVID-19 pandemic wave has yet to recede and our ability to generate incremental revenue rests with the measures that our government will announce from time to time. Our key financial strategy will be to seize every opportunity that allow us to generate incremental revenue (e.g. private golf events, Seletar Room & Eagle’s View for social & banquet events, etc); keep a close watch on operating expenses and CAPEX items; and ensuring that our operating cash burn-rate remain under watchful eyes.

continue to adapt during the pandemic period. I would like to thank all the hardworking staffs in operations and admin for their steady hands during this economic uncertainty. Let me record my appreciation to our veteran MC members for their esprit de corps. Please stay healthy, observe all safe distancing and management measures. Seletar Reborn aspires to be the best friendly family club of choice and a top golf course in Singapore. Many thanks.

GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEW
General Manager & Deputy General Manager
Our warmest congratulations to Ms Goh Yong Cheng (left) and Mr Chan Lee Hock (right) for their promotion to General Manager (GM) and Deputy General Manger (DGM) with effect from 1 February 2021. Get to know these familiar faces a little more in our exclusive interview.
P
roactive, quick and hands-on. That was the impression our GM Yong Cheng gave when we met for the photoshoot. Together with DGM Chan, the duo were not above rolling up their sleeves and moving tables for a good shot. If action speaks louder than words, their belief in leading by example certainly rings true, be it when they join members and staff for Gotong Royong (our course weeding sessions) or in the little unassuming things they do. Not one to stay in an ivory tower, both GM Yong Cheng and DGM Chan can often be found interacting with and talking to members, which they find helps them to better understand members’ issues and expectations. The two share a very good working relationship, and GM Yong Cheng pointed out that she and DGM Chan complements each other when it comes to work. Armed with extensive corporate and overseas experience, GM Yong Cheng’s career and love for travel has taken her across the globe, and she hopes to bring her corporate know-how and the best of what she has seen in other clubs to better the Club services for members. DGM Chan has over 30 years of experience in the golf industry, having also worked

in other golf clubs. While she is quick to action and proactive in getting things done right, he is levelheaded and thoughtful in understanding a problem. What they both share is their love of the great outdoors. GM Yong Cheng enjoys hiking on weekends, and is in fact thinking of picking up golfing again after some 10 years, now that she can no longer satisfy her wanderlust with the Covid-19 travel restrictions. DGM Chan is an avid English Premier League (EPL) follower and ex-footballer who found a new love in golf, and while he no longer golfs as much as he used to, he now takes morning walks and jogs daily. Their plans for the Club is straightforward – to work towards bringing up the value of the Club and enhancing its services so that members can enjoy their Club experience and golf in one of the top premier golf courses. Leadership is often a series of tradeoffs and a balancing act, with multiple priorities to be juggled and tough decisions to be made. Managing through a pandemic and leading through uncertainty is doubly hard, but at the end of the day, they are clear that their focus is on wanting the best for the Club, and that they will do what is right to make that happen.
O
ur oldest staff at 81 years old, Shift Leader Retnam bids farewell to the Club after 26 fruitful years of service. As one of our pioneer shift leaders, we thank him for his contributions to the Club and wish him all the very best as he transits into his golden retirement. Read on for the secrets to his youth and his fond memories of the Club!
HappyRetirement to Retnam! His secret to looking youthful and staying healthy… he quit smoking while holidaying in Amsterdam some 20 years ago, and has also cut down on his drinking and intake of oily food. What he most enjoyed about his job… as someone who likes structure and maintaining things in order, the job is itself a natural fit. He also enjoys patrolling the Club and talking to people.
Parting words… he hopes his fellow colleagues will be happy at work and at home and to stay cheerful. How his colleagues see him… “He is very meticulous about his work and very caring, especially to his younger colleagues.” – Loong Chow Jin, Manager of Housekeeping & Security.
What he has learnt from his time at the Club… the power of not taking harsh words personally if he knows he is doing the right thing. Favourite spot in Seletar… the driving range. Watching people practise and hitting balls makes him happy, as it feels like his frustrations are gone with the wind. Least favourite spot in Seletar… the swimming pool. Having witnessed cases of people drowning in his previous career, he has bad memories of the pool, he cannot bear to see it again. Favourite Club event… lantern festival celebration. He has fond memories of walking the golf course with kids carrying their lanterns at night. What he will miss the most… apart from his colleagues, he will actually miss wearing his uniform, having donned a uniform for almost all his working life in the police force and in security. Interestingly, he will also miss the lightning warning, as he says he will not hear it anymore after he leaves the Club.

I always enjoy my time at Soothing Strokes Spa (I go for both facial and massage regularly). Mery is always nice and friendly. She is also very skilled at her work, she takes time and effort to explain the issues of my skin and muscles to me after each session and will also explain what I can do to take care of my body. I will continue to patronise Soothing Strokes in the future. - Melanie Loh, member
I would like to draw your attention to the excellent service provided by Carmen, one of the serving staff at The Terrace, who took the trouble to look for me at the trolley locker room to return my iPhone which I had left on the table. We are in recommendation of Marshal Lee Chin Kiat to be awarded Marshal of the Year. We find him hardworking, knows his job well, wellmannered, very helpful and competent in performing his duties. Hence, we highly recommend him to be awarded the welldeserved ‘Star’. Thank you. - Michael Lim, member

G lor y on the Greens!
eletar has been voted as the Best Renovated Golf Course in Asia Pacific in the 2020 Global Golf Awards. The Global Golf Awards is a transition from the Asian Golf Awards which has been running for some 20 years, making it the most successful and respected industry recognition of its kind. Apart from online voting, the judging panel also considered the general industry senses, assessment of change and quality, as well as feedback from members and industry professionals.
We are elated and honoured for the recognition, and credit must go to all the parties involved. From the initial vision, planning and preparations to the actual backbreaking work, it took a whole team of committed people working together for the new course to come to fruition. No easy feat but indefinitely rewarding, seeing how golfers look forward to playing and rediscovering the beauty of the course every single time! Read on to find out who and what went towards this achievement.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS SAY: Congratulations on winning Best Renovated Course in the Asian Pacific region! Can’t think of a more well-deserved win. What an honour for Seletar and what a privilege it is to be a Seletarian! – Jennifer Yan
1. The vision & design philosophy From the beginning, the redesign committee together with our design architects from Golfplan, David Dale and Kevin Ramsey set out to preserve the undulating terrain and Bristish isle flavour unique to the Seletar course. Part of the plan was also to incorporate more water features to highlight the views of the natural landscape while providing a tranquil atmosphere for golfers. Countless meetings and discussions later, a design worthy of praise was born.
2. The planning, preparations and dedication To answer PUB’s call for all golf courses to be self-sufficient in their water needs, we appointed water management specialists to conduct a water balance study and propose solutions beneficial for the long haul. We are proud to say that our new course is wholly self-sufficient in that regard. It was also a challenging task to reconfigure the holes affected by NParks’ plans and the domino effect it had on the adjacent holes. To meet the safety measures required by NParks for the public access area, further refinements to the entire course design were necessitated and our consultants and committee had to re-work the renovation plans. It was with a great sense of accomplishment that we were able to carry out the works in two phases where one nine-hole remains playable so that members can still have the opportunity to golf albeit the renovation. The renovations was not without its fair share of challenges, but we are thankful that we pulled through, and also grateful to members for their support and cooperation.
3. The talk of the town In addition to the Global Golf Awards, we are also honoured to be recognised by the American Society of Golf Course Architects in the 2020 Environmental Excellence Awards. Submissions were reviewed by golf industry and environmental leaders in recognition of the good work being done by golf courses in addressing the unique needs of the environment. Our superior irrigation and drainage system and expanding of water storage capacity to achieve water self-sufficiency put the Club at the forefront of sustainable maintenance. Our new course was also featured positively in the global journal Golf Course Architecture. The acclaim is testament to the hard work of the Redesign Committee, the Construction Manager Green Dynasty, and quality finishing works of TEHC, the contractor.
Congrats to the Golf committee team for achieving the Best Renovated Golf Course in Asia Pacific award. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of all those responsible. Thank you and well done! - Francis Lim
Congratulations and thank you to Captain Phua Hua Seng, the Green Committee, Seletar Golf Team and all the staff in Seletar. You all have made it possible! - Angeline Koh
WHAT OUR STAFF SAY: The design is maintenance-friendly and the layout is well-designed, it does not penalize a good shot. – Lee Yew Kee, Golf Course Superintendent
The quality of work that is being achieved to date is amongst the best I have seen in 30 years of golf construction. – Owen Hester, Construction Manager of Green Dynasty

In Her Own R
anked amongst some of the very best professional golfers in the world, Jennifer Yan (or Jing Yan as she’s known to many) started playing at the age of four way back at our very first golf course at the Seletar Base Golf Club. This affable and unassuming LPGA player has many fond memories on the Seletar course and has witnessed its changes over the years, and we are honoured to have Jennifer share her thoughts of the new Seletar course and some of her favourite holes!
MY FAVOURITE HOLES: Hole 3 I personally feel this is the most difficult hole on the course, and who doesn’t like a good challenge, right? The long par 4 makes for a sizable approach shot with a long club and the water on the right forces you to make smart decisions and keep your misses to one side of the fairway. My usual miss is to the right so I find it is a great practice and confidence builder to try and keep it safe and left. A good score here and you feel like a conqueror.
Hole 4 I love a risk and reward hole, and this hole hits the spot. Especially with tricky number 3, this is an excellent balance to get one back. A potentially reachable par 5 with a good drive, it is a scoring hole that is protected by both water on the left and greenside bunkers on the approach. Eagle and bogey are both on the cards.

I’ ve always loved playing here and the renovations have made it even more exciting. The design is great and the scenery beautiful and open, with tricky challenges as well as gettable scores. Hole 15 The symmetry of 3 and 15 is beautiful. Twins with different personalities, this hole really fits my eye, if you play a draw you really feel like you can get it close, though water keeps you in check. Just the right amount of tension. Hole 18 This hole has always been one of my favourites to play. A few changes to the fairway and green layout with bunkers give you more options off the tee and lines into the green, love it. Guess what will make you feel good? A birdie to finish in front of a packed Terrace!

Enjoy your Golf with
Better Pace of Play P
laying at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simply about being more efficient with your valuable time, as well as everyone else’s. Adopting this mindset – and not being afraid to share it with your fellow players – will ultimately add enjoyment to your golf experience. Here are some recognized tips for improving pace of play: Start smart
Plan your shot before you get to your ball
Confirm your tee time in advance and make it a point to arrive at the tee early with your golf equipment in order, ready to play. Remember essentials like extra balls, tees, gloves and appropriate clothing for the day’s weather conditions.
Once you are off the tee, think ahead. Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play. Very often, you can do this while others are playing, without disruption. If you take your glove off between shots, have it back on before it is your turn to play. Even a small step like this saves time.
For example, • Golfers should arrive within 15 minutes before their tee time at the Starter. • Should a player be late, the flight should tee off in accordance with their tee time. The late player will be sent to the flight’s location later.
“Tee It Forward” unless you are consistently able to reach greens in regulation from the back tees. In other words, play from a set of tees that is comfortable for you – one where you are more likely to hit lofted irons into greens instead of hybrids or fairway woods. It is acceptable for players in the same group to play from different tees. (The USGA Handicap System provides a formula for adjusting handicaps from different tees.) For example, golfers are to play from tee boxes that match their playing ability according to the Handicap Index levels on the Control of Play board.
Minimize your time on the tee On the tee it is usually acceptable for players to “hit when ready.” You can also save time by playing a provisional ball (Rule 27-2) if you think your original ball might be lost or out of bounds. For example, • If golfers are unsure whether their golf ball is in the hazard/OB, they are advised to play a provisional ball. • Golfers are advised to play their shot when it is safe to do so, even if they are playing out of turn. This is especially whilst waiting for their flightmate to search for their ball.
14
GOLF
Keep your pre-shot routine short Pick your line of play once and trust yourself. Try to take no more than one practice swing, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn. Be efficient after your shot too. Start moving toward your next shot promptly.
Aim to play in 40 seconds From club selection to pre-shot routine to execution, strive to hit your shot in 40 seconds when it is your turn to play. Help keep play moving at a brisk pace.
Develop an eye for distance You do not have to step off yardage for every shot. If you need to determine precise distance, try to find a yardage marker before you reach your ball, then step off the yardage on the way to your ball. Or, consider investing in an electronic range-finder or global positioning system for golf and use it when permitted by Local Rule. If others you are playing with are not familiar with the course, the Rules permit players to exchange yardage information without penalty.
When sharing a cart, use a buddy system Don’t wait in the cart (buggy) while your cartmate hits and then drive to your ball. Get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs. Be ready to play when it is your turn and then let your cartmate pick you up. Or, drive to your ball after you drop your cartmate off and then pick him or her up after you hit.
Be helpful to others in your group
Remember that picking up your ball is permitted by the USGA Handicap System If not in an individual stroke play competition, it is generally OK to pick up your ball and move on to the next hole if you are “out” of a hole and want to maintain pace of play. This applies in match play and many forms of stroke play, including Stableford and best-ball play.
Do your scoring later Follow the flight of all tee shots, not just your own. Once in the fairway, help others look for their ball if you already know the location of yours. Volunteer to fill in a divot or rake a bunker for another player if needed.
Keep up with the group in front of you Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front leaves the area in front of you.
Be efficient on the putting green Mark your ball and lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. You can usually line up your putt while others are putting, without disturbing them. Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee, and leave the green promptly after holing out. Wait until the next tee to record your score.
If the rear flight is waiting, golfers should move on to the next hole first and do the following at the next hole instead: • Write scores down • Clean clubs and balls • Put clubs into bag when your flight mate is ready to go
Halfway House The Halfway House is a pit stop for golfers to take a toilet break and/or buy food and drinks. Golfers should be mindful of the duration they spend at the Halfway House so as not to hold back the rear flights. For example, • For flights which are on schedule, they can order their food and drinks to be consumed at the Halfway House. • For flights which are off the pace of play, they can order and pack their food and drinks to be consumed on the go. Festive Fun @ SELETA R
W
hile the year-end festivities last year were decidedly low-key and scaled down in light of the pandemic, we were grateful to still be able to bring some joy to members, who in turn bought joy to others. Catch the highlights below!
A Meaningful Christmas • DONATING USED CLOTHES! Huge thanks to generous Seletarians who donated their preloved clothes for distribution to the underprivileged in Indonesia, Camboda and China. The used clothes donation drive was held on 12 December 2020 and 23 January 2021 at the Club in collaboration with the Lions Club of Singapore Tanah Merah.
• VOLUNTEERING AT A SOUP KITCHEN! Ever ready to sign up for a good cause, Seletarians gamely volunteered to help prepare meals for the beneficiaries at Willing Hearts on 19 and 20 December 2020.
• ADOPTING WISHES OF THE UNDERPRIVILEGED Seletarians have been adopting and fulfilling the wishes of the Boys Brigade’s Share-A-Gift beneficiaries every year, and 2020 was no different even amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

FESTIVE FUN @ SELETAR
A Sporty December • LEARNING SNORKELING! The kids were kept entertained and acquired a new skill at our December pool snorkeling programme by Coach Nelson.
• TENNIS FUN MATCH PLAY! Tennis, fun, and friends – what’s not to like? Congratulations to Sophie Wong, Bennett Tay and Kaegen Wong for bagging the top 3 positions in the junior tennis match play held on 27 December 2020!
Exploding Creativity • BUILDING GINGERBREAD HOUSES! Did you know that gingerbread houses date back to the 1600s? The little ones had fun creating their own cardboard gingerbread houses on 19 December 2020 at this Christmas workshop!

THE ANNUAL MASTERS STRIKES BACK! Our heartiest congratulations to Nelson Wong and Dara Ang for winning the Annual Masters Championship three years in a row! For unlocking this achievement, the deserving pair got to bring home the Challenge Trophy. While it was regrettable that we were not able to have a grand post-celebration after the finals, we are glad that our bowling fraternity were still able to have the chance to bowl together, albeit with strict safe management measures in place. Stay safe everyone!
