Dear Members Moving into a New Era

n just a month, we will begin our new fiscal year and this is a new beginning for Seletar Country Club. There is so much we have accomplished and so much more to be done. The Management Committee will continue to make improvements as we navigate future challenges in our next lap, which will begin soon with the conclusion of our golf course renovation.

Happy Days to Come As you can see, the golf course is coming up beautifully and we are all anticipating its reopening this April. Preparations are already ongoing for our soft-reopening on Sunday 5 April, and we are all heartened by

the overwhelming response received from members. After 25 years here in Seletar Club Road and enjoying year-on-year growth and successes, this is truly a rebirth of the Club as we introduce a new golf course better positioned in addressing several maintenance and sustainability issues, including independent preservation and management of water in time to come, as required by the authorities. News of our reopening are already exciting the local golfing crowd, and to ensure members get first-chance at playing the new 18-holes, we have held off all external games and bookings till June, when we will have a triple celebration of the grand opening ceremony, the opening of the time capsule and the return of our annual charity golf.

It is indeed exciting to be able to witness the return of life to our verdant greens, and I feel privileged to have been part of this major milestone.

New Management Structure As we enter this new era, it is with regret that our GM, Philip Tan, has tendered his resignation. I take this opportunity to thank Philip for all he has done for the Club and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. In line with the Club now being a fully member-managed model, the MC has taken this opportunity to de-layer the Management structure and streamlined it into two groups â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Operations, and Administration and Corporate Services. These will be headed by Chan Lee Hock and Goh Yong Cheng respectively as the new Directors; and Vice-Chairman David Siew

and Captain Phua Hua Seng will oversea these functions. As this is a new approach, it will take some time to crystallize and strengthen, and as such we seek membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; understanding and cooperation to let it evolve naturally. As the year comes to a close, I wanted to write a letter to wish everyone happy holidays and express how gratefu l I am to be a member of this club. I have been travelling and competing for most of the year on tour and had a few good finishe s with three top 10s and five top 15s, my best year on the LPGA so far. It has not been easy wit h the level of competition and I am hap py with my results this yea r. Cu rrently I am training to strive to get better and achieve even more in the next season, and I feel the club is doing the same, undergoing renovation and reaching new heights. I am excited to see what the future will bring in 2020. I am proud to call Seletar my home club and gratefu l for somewhere to improv me the opportunity to refl e my game. s it luck, or is it skill? Seletarians displayed both at the casino-themed countdown party on 31 December 2019, as they walked away with prizes in the games and lucky draw, and danced the night away. After witnessing the iconic countdown and balloon drop at the main lobby, the revelers formed a human chain and trooped back to Seletar Room for a light supper and grand lucky draw. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishing everyone a Happy 2020!

Hong Bao Bowl

he perennially well-received Hong Bao Bowl returned to Seletar Bowl on 2 February. Kicking off with a Lo Hei and buffet lunch, the jovial atmosphere saw members all dressed in red and having fun mingling and bowling. There were also special Hong Bao dips with varying cash prizes awaiting bowlers who bowled a game ending with an auspicious â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;8â&#x20AC;&#x2122;, with a minimum of 108 pinfalls, and more.

ombining art, tradition and martial arts, the lion dance troupe from Qing Wei Lion and Dragon Dance Cultural Troupe inspired awe with their agile acrobatic moves, particularly on the high poles. Members and guests lapped up the performance as the lions and God of Fortune toured the Club on 2 February to bring fortune and prosperity for the new year.

his being the first Club event held on the new golf course, Hong Bao Golf 2020 was fully subscribed, as the 104 golfers came together to play two rounds of composite 9 holes on 2 February. The emphasis being on fostering team bonding, the play format took the total scores of the partners, and the first place went to the flight consisting of Yong Yen Fong, Tan Jui Khia, Heng Swee Chim and Kitnasamy S/O Marudapan. Congratulations! Yong Yen Fong, new member and first time participant in the Hong Bao Golf, complimented the golf course on its scenic landscape and challenging design, “It feels like I’m overseas, the views and the wind today was very good.”

Caring for the Course Here are five simple tips on how you can make a positive impact on the course!

1 On the tee box

TEE BOXES & FAIRWAYS

Imagine yourself hitting the perfect drive down the fairway, only to find your ball sitting in an unrepaired divot left behind by a previous golfer?

Carts make golf accessible and convenient for all in this game we all enjoy. However, it can also cause much damage to our beautiful course if not properly used. Let us keep this easy by:

Repairing a divot can have immediate and long term benefits for playability and it only takes about 5 seconds of your time. Unrepaired divots can leave bumpy surfaces, an uneven lie for your shots, cause weeds to invade, and it takes weeks for the grass to recover!

• Avoiding abrupt starts, stops and turns • Avoiding waterlogged and puddled areas • Steering clear of signs and ropes

Divots with soil that are still attached can be replaced and are likely to survive. For the divots that break (when taking a divot), use the sand mix provided in your cart to repair your surrounding turf and press it down with your foot. Everyone has a repairing divots!

Always remember to: • Rake it back and forth to create a smoother surface • Enter and exit from the lowest point to protect the grass on steep bunker faces and banks

THE GREEN

The proper way of repairing your ball mark with the repair tool is to simply poke and push down, not up. Always carry a repair tool and take pleasure in repairing; even if it’s not yours.

THE BEACH A.K.A BUNKERS

Bunkers are not called “traps” for nothing, so let us not make it more difficult for the next golfer. Raking our footprints and any other form of creation in the sand bunker is basic golf course etiquette.

Everyone wants to have the perfect roll on the green! Before you start lining up for that perfect putt however, remember to repair your ball mark. A mark left unrepaired or improper repair can cause scarring on the green for weeks.

GOLF CARTS (BUGGY)

THE GREENKEEPERS

Let us share the responsibility of caring for the golf course! Be mindful that keeping the course in pristine condition requires a lot of hard work on the part of the greenkeepers. Without them, these beautiful surfaces would not exist. It is a tough job out there, so do give them room to complete their work, and never assume that they know you are there or that they can hear you especially when they are operating their machines. Never hit the green when the flag is pulled out or while the greenkeepers are there. Be patient and try your best to get their attention before executing your perfect shot.

Every golfer looks forward to a beautiful day out on the course. Take a little time to learn these basic skills as this will help improve the condition of the course not just for yourself but for everyone else. Let us set a good example especially for the benefit of the new and junior golfers! HAPPY GOLFING!

our safety is paramount on the golf course. As the new course will be reopening soon, here are some gentle reminders for all.

GOLF

Keep your arms and legs inside the buggy at all times.

Do not use your handphone while driving the buggy.

Do not play your shot if there are golfers within the range of your shot.

Do drive carefully and be mindful of your surroundings.

Do check the blind spots behind the buggy before reversing.

If the lightning alert sounds, stop play and return to the clubhouse or take shelter immediately.

SAFETY FIRST

ll golfers should be 100% sure about the safety of other golfers, especially those in the front flight, before playing their shot. Be careful when and where you swing your clubs. Golfers should only play their shot when the golfers in front are out of range:

Tee Off: • For Par 3: Ensure the flight in front of you has left the green and driven off • For Par 4 & 5: Ensure the flight in front of you has taken the second shot. Approach Shot to Green: • For Par 4 & 5: Ensure the flight in front of you has left the green and driven off.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HIT A WAYWARD SHOT 1. If for some reason you hit a wayward shot, you and/or your flight mates must immediately shout “FORE” or “BALL” as loudly as you can. If there is any doubt whatsoever, shout “FORE” too. 2. Go up to the affected party and apologise unreservedly whether or not your ball hits anyone, i.e. show remorse. 3. Upon finishing your round, apologise again. A round of drinks usually helps to soothe things out. 4. Take note of the time, place, circumstances like visibility and report immediately to the marshal if you deem that the affected party may report the case.

e catch up with one of Seletarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very own tennis couple, Steven and Annie. Partners in life and in tennis, the two first met during their school days, and have been married for 37 years now! Athletic genes run in the family, as their son Daryl plays rugby at the national level. Q. How long have the two of you been playing tennis? A. We have been playing since 1988. Q. Wow thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over 30 years! What got you started? A. We used to bring our children for swimming lessons at the old Seletar Club in the 80s. While they were having their swimming lesson, my wife and I will just go to the tennis court for a social game. Q. How often do you guys play? A. We play twice a week at the Club (Wednesday and Sunday). The Club Tennis Night every Wednesday has given us more opportunities to know more club members. Most of us represent the Club for the yearly tennis competition. Q. Any thoughts on the Club Tennis Night? A. We met many new club members, and we became good friends such that we went for holidays and dinners together. For that, we enjoyed very much. We have been friends since the 90s. Q. Has playing tennis together helped you two as a couple in any way? A. Playing tennis together was very good for our relationship as husband and wife. We learned more about one another. As long as our health permits; we would like to continue to play tennis together.
