Dear Fello w Seletarians, FINANCIAL YEAR ENDING 1 MARCH 2022 As we learn to live with the evolving pandemic situation, Seletar Country Club went through another challenging financial year ending (FYE) 1 March 2022. While the economy had recovered to some extent in the beginning of 2021, a surge in case numbers in the latter half of the year forced the authorities to then reimpose certain restrictions that had previously been loosened. Naturally, these measures impacted our main revenue generating activities – corporate golf games, F&B and Social Events. Towards the tail end of 2021, some restrictions were then eased as vaccination rates increased. Slowly, we are ramping up the scale of activities and events across the board. Naturally, these will have to comply with existing safe management measures. Our operating revenue for FYE 1 March 2022 is expected to be better than the preceding year, owing to the easing of certain restrictions plus an uptick in membership related transactions. The Club is also embarking on a series of improvement works, including renovations to the Eagle’s View Restaurant, Old Jackpot Room, and significant upgrades to the existing Sports Complex for members’ enjoyment. We are fortunate to have a positive liquid cash flow position that will enable us to meet our obligations for these expenditures. With a dual pronged approach

of financial prudence and catering to rising demand in Golf and Membership, the Club’s current finances are projected to remain strong for the foreseeable future. APPRECIATION TO MEMBERS, STAFF AND MC MEMBERS We would like to earnestly thank members for their continuously strong and steadfast support throughout the Covid-19 pandemic period. This has truly been an unprecedented time of upheaval and as a Club, we are still adapting to newfound challenges that seem to present themselves at every available opportunity. Many thanks also to our hardworking staff in operations and the administrative office for their adaptability and resourcefulness throughout these trying times. Lastly, let me thank our MC members for their impressive contributions to their respective subcommittees and the Club as a whole. I am truly blessed to work with such an outstanding team. Please stay healthy and observe all safe distancing and management measures. With everyone’s continuous support, we are confident that Seletar Country Club will reach new heights in our efforts to become the most family friendly Club of choice and a top golf course in Singapore. Thank you and see you around the Club. MAUREEN LEE Honorary Treasurer

Improvement Works AND PROJECTS

Before

AT SELETAR COUNTRY CLUB

Renovation of Toilets outside the Mahjong Room (September – November 2021)

The toilets outside the Mahjong Room were starting to look a little long in the tooth and more importantly, had shown signs of physical deterioration (broken lights and tiles). Thus, a decision was made to fully renovate the toilets. The old wall tiles were replaced with new ones and likewise for the toilet fittings (basin, toilet bowls etc.) and lights, amongst others. Full length mirrors were also added to provide a spacious feel. Now, the newly renovated toilets outside the Mahjong Room have a common visual theme with the also recently renovated toilets outside the Seletar Room. Together, they help to project a uniform brand image for the Club.

Renovation of Former Eagles’ View Restaurant Space (November – December 2021)

The Eagle’s View Restaurant had long been a staple of the Club and a favorite amongst many of our longtime members. Over the years, countless precious memories have been made there. In keeping with the Club’s modernization efforts, the space it occupied has been given a facelift. The ceilings were redesigned, and a new air-conditioning system was installed too. In time to come, we look forward to announcing more exciting news regarding this space!

Proposed Tennis Court 4 Repair Works (January – March 2022)

For a while now, the ground at Tennis Court 4 has been observed to be visibly sinking. Cracks had started to surface, and the floor looked visibly slanted. As part of the rectification works, we will hack the ground to the foundation and rebuild the court floor again with more durable materials. Once the works are complete, more details will be provided.

TIPS TO

Avoid Slow Play

Slow play has become something of an epidemic which can result in the dreaded 5-hour round of golf. There’s no excuse and it doesn’t matter what level of golfer you are. A round of golf should average 4 hours 30 minutes, whether you are shooting 72 or 100 plus (not referring to the isotonic drink).

Playing at a good pace is not about rushing your golf but rather to efficiently manage your time on the course. Here in Seletar, we aim to inculcate some of these time-saving practices which will improve on your overall golfing experience.

1. Arrive early at the Starter, before your tee-time Why do players need to arrive early?

During Tournaments,

Starter needs to: 1. Check and verify players' details. 2. Brief players regarding course conditions and other pertinent issues that will affect play. • Player’s preparations include: - Warm-up - Equipment e.g. gloves, balls, tees - Most important of all – Bets!

1. Player who arrives at the Starter no more than 5 minutes late will receive the General Penalty for first hole (according to F&A Rule 5.3a) 2. Player who arrives at Starter more than 5 minutes late will be disqualified and not allowed to play.

All players from the same flight should arrive 10-15 minutes before their tee-time

Be considerate of your flight-mates and other golfers.

2. Play at the tee-box that corresponds to your Handicap Index To follow your handicap range and play according to the control of play guide.

10

GOLF

3. Adopt Ready Golf READY………GO !!!!! This simply means that whoever is ready, as long it is safe to do so, should go ahead and hit. An example is when you arrive at a tee box. If one person is writing down the score or getting something out of their bag and takes longer to get the tee, a person with a higher score on the previous hole should still go ahead and hit. Or when you are in the fairway and one flightmate is 160 metres away and the other flightmate is 157 metres away, whoever is ready first should go ahead and hit the approach shot.

Playing out of turn when it is safe to do so

Being aware of both the players around you and when you can hit can reduce the duration of each hole by 1 to 2 minutes, which amounts to a significant amount of time over 18 holes!

Ball searching by all the players in a flight will slow the pace-of-play. Instead, the other 2 players should hit their golf shots to save time. With the latest change in golf rules, a player is allowed a maximum of 3 minutes to search for a lost ball. If you are not sure of your ball’s landing area, it is always good to play a Provisional Ball.

4. Plan Ahead

When you arrive at the green, immediately mark your ball and start the process of reading your putt, even if it’s not your turn.

Reading your line only when its your turn to putt will slow down the pace-of-play

Do not record your scores on the green or beside the green where you have just finished.

Whether you are walking to your ball because your cart buddy is on the other side of the hole or coming up to a green, bring several clubs with you as an option if you are uncertain. This will save you from having to head back to the buggy to get the right club. Record your scores on the next tee-box

HOLE 2 TEE-BOX

Refrain from parking your clubs at the front of the green

Placing of clubs at the side of the green HOLE 1 GREEN

Place equipment on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee and leave the green promptly after holing out.

Alight from the buggy earlier and walk to your ball, or have the driver drop you off, so you’re ready to hit when it’s your turn. If walking to your ball, bring along different clubs for options.

Avoid waiting in the buggy while your partner hits. If it is safe to do so, you should drive to your ball position and be on standby to play the shot.

WITH GOOD COACHES AND VERY SUPPORTIVE PARENTS, HE CAN ONLY MOVE FORWARD Despite his young age, Brayden speaks with a maturity that keeps you engaged in conversation. He already has a mind of his own and is very focused on what he wants to do in the future. For a 14-year student at ACS Independent, Brayden has at least a full decade ahead to decide on a career. But he is emphatic when he says, “My present goal is to win as many medals as I can for Singapore and continue my studies to the best of my ability.” No doubt it is early days yet about a career but when you find Brayden steering the interview towards Golf, you cannot help but admire his conviction. The fanatical golfer, who was born in Singapore, developed a passion for the sport when he was just 3 years old. It came about by chance while he was out furniture shopping with his parents. They had passed vby a driving range and decided to go in for a tour. Brayden says “My interest immediately came, and I wanted to sign up for lessons. As I was still very young and small in size, they would only allow me

16

GOLF

to join after being assessed by a coach. I eventually passed the assessment and was thus accepted.” A mere year later, Brayden had played in his first competition and started to win what would be the first of many prizes to come. The boy is a fierce competitor, as evidenced by his intense passion for all things golf. During his spare time, there are a few professional players whom he loves to watch like Adam Scott, Collin Morikawa or Rory Mcllroy. Brayden says, “I love their swing and hope to pick up some of their techniques, and game management especially when they are in contention.” The top professional golfers constantly look for ways to improve their game, and Brayden is similar in that regard. He says “I would say my wedge play and putting are the most consistent parts of my game. I wish to gain more distance off the tee to be more competitive. I am always working on the mental part and hope to break through in some big tournaments soon.”

Brayden has lofty aspirations. He recalls playing at the Pondok Indah Junior Championship in 2019 when he finally broke his best scores in competition with a bogey free 5 under 67. At the same year earlier in Hanoi, the Lion City Cup was another memorable tournament for him. It was his first ever amateur tournament. He went with his seniors from the Singapore squad and experienced great camaraderie around the group. For those who hope to follow in Brayden’s footsteps and make your mark on the sport, he had this to say, “To never look back. I have made mistakes in the past, during training and competitions. Don’t dwell on past mistakes you have made, just keep looking forward and take those memories in as positive experiences. Use these experiences to better and hone your skills and sharpen up the parts that you’re lacking in your golf game.” Brayden is definitely set for great things in golf, and the youngster knows that the road ahead can be long and winding. Still, he wants to give it a go and we wish him nothing but the very best!

CHINESE NEW YEAR

The ancient Chinese spatial laws of feng shui have gone full-on mainstream, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Marie Kondo among its enthusiasts. To the uninitiated, feng shui can feel a little esoteric, but if you take the time to dig into the philosophy behind it, you'll find that it's not only based on simple common-sense practices that make our homes healthier and more organized, but it also reveals how connected we are to our homes—and in turn, how they can affect our mood and well-being. On Saturday, 22 January, we had the pleasure of having Master Jason Liew speak to 19 participants about the overall Feng Shui outlook for 2022 and each Zodiac’s life cycle. He has been learning and practising the art of geomancy for over 2 decades now. The talk was very well received and we look forward to holding more Feng Shui talks in the months to come.

Ikebana

Chinese New Year

WORKSHOP

Ikebana (生け花, 活け花, "arranging flowers" or "making flowers alive") is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is also known as kadō (華道, "way of flowers"). The tradition dates back to the Heian period, when floral offerings were made at altars. Later, flower arrangements were instead used to adorn the tokonoma (alcove) of a traditional Japanese home. For this Chinese New Year, we had the pleasure of having Mrs. Bess Tan teach our class of 6 participants the art of Ikebana. She is a certified teacher of Ikebana who has been practicing the artform since 2014. Mrs. Bess Tan introduced this traditional artform to our members and guided them in creating their own unique Chinese New Year style creations. The event was well received and the next Ikebana workshop will be taking place in March.

Taufiq’s Intense Passion for Tennis Coaching Rubs Off on His Students With a team of talented coaches behind them, Seletar Country Club’s Tennis teams are poised to hit greater heights Anyone that has played tennis before will tell you that it is an easy sport to play, but not to master. Head Tennis Coach at Seletar Country Club, Taufiq, knows that better than most. Since young, he has been surrounded by a group of friends who play tennis at the highest levels. Some even played for the National Team and featured in prestigious tournaments around Southeast Asia. Taufiq says “I consider myself lucky to have this group of friends who have always motivated me. They are the ones who drive me to devote my time and energy into tennis.” Taufiq’s journey to become a Tennis Coach started 14 years ago at Laguna Country Club and the Singapore Swimming Club, where he was working part time as an Assistant Coach and Sparring Coach respectively for about a year while schooling. As time went by, Taufiq realized it was his calling to guide and develop kids to become better tennis players. Taufiq says “I enjoyed my time as a coach, especially watching my students playing at local tournaments. That was when I decided to become a full-time coach after completing school. Without realizing it, here I am now having been coaching for 13 years and counting.”

latest stop in his storied journey. He says of Seletar Country Club’s members “To be honest, Seletar Country Club members are very humble and friendly. So far, I have had a great time coaching the members here and I am looking forward to growing the tennis scene even more in the future.” Tennis Coaching is by no means an easy task, yet Taufiq constantly beams with positivity. He adds “Being positive is always the most important value to impart to all my students. I always tell my coaches to be positive on the court and lead by example. On the court, we coaches have a more profound impact on our players or students than anyone else, including the parents. We always strive to have a positive attitude in lessons, practice and games as I believe your attitude is what defines you.” With such good coaches, it is no wonder that Seletar Country Club can field it’s largest and strongest ever team for the Inter-Club Tennis Tournament in 2022. In fact, it’s also the first time in the Club’s history that we can send a team to contest every age group at the competition. Taufiq excitedly says “This year is a special moment for us and I'm very excited about it. Not only do we have both Ladies and Men’s teams representing SCC, but we also have the Junior Team for the Under 10 & Under 12 categories as well. Both the Senior and Junior Teams are training hard week in and week out whether in the club or on their own. I believe we are competitive enough and we will go far this year. I'm looking forward to the team bringing back some silverware to adorn our cabinet.” To those that desire to take their tennis game to the next level, Taufiq advises “Be consistent in taking tennis lessons with us at least once a week for beginners. For those who have played tennis before, keep playing and keep learning from your tennis kakis who are better players. Never give up and stay positive!” If reading about Taufiq’s exploits has you itching to pick up your tennis racket and start hitting some balls, you are certainly not alone!

Taufiq’s tennis career has seen him coach at several Country Clubs, with Seletar Country Club being the

CHEF SUNNY

Brings His Unique Flair TO SELETAR COUNTRY CLUB

You might not know his name but we are sure you have tasted one of his many creations at the Seletar Terrace and Tavern. Learn more about the man behind the impressive culinary masterpieces at Seletar Country Club – Chef Sunny Soon. Born in Melaka, Malaysia, Chef Sunny developed a passion for cooking from a young age. To help provide for his family, he started working as a part time cook at 15 years old and slowly worked his way up the ranks in the kitchens of various F&B establishments. His specialty lies in Asian & Peranakan Cuisine cuisine. He came to the shores of sunny Singapore in the late 90s. Shortly after, he received a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to work in Australia for a couple of years. He returned to Singapore and worked here for a period before heading back to his hometown of Johor Bahru, Malaysia to set up his own business 6 years ago. Hit by the pandemic,

SPORTS + SOCIAL

Chef Sunny decided to return to Singapore to launch the next phase of his career. Chef Sunny likes to spend his rest days catching up with friends or prowling the streets of Singapore for the best eats. He also makes it a point to have regular video calls with his 4 kids, 1 boy and 3 girls, aged between 6 to 17 years old, who currently reside in Johor Bahru. When unrestricted travel is finally available between Singapore and Malaysia, he hopes to be able to spend more time with them. So far, Chef Sunny has immensely enjoyed working with his colleagues at the Club. He also appreciates that Peter Boon, Head of F&B, has created an open culture which allows Chef Sunny and his team to engage in a positive exchange of ideas. Chef Sunny looks forward to introducing more of his own unique spins on classic Asian specialties for members to enjoy in 2022. If you happen to see him around the Club, remember to say hi!
