Dear Members UPDATE ON GOLF COURSE RENOVATION
I
t has been eight months since we started our golf course renovations, which has been progressing well with grassing nearly completed or in progress on seven new holes. We have entered the grow-in phase on these holes, and are monitoring them closely to ensure flawless conditions when it reopens for play (refer to pictures on pages 22 to 25 for latest updates). The construction of our lakes is likewise nearing completion, thus allowing us to link all our lakes together. This will ensure water sustainability for the golf course during dry spells, which we witnessed from January to March this year. Our golf course architect Golfplan again visited the site in March to inspect the work and oversee construction progress. Both David Dale and Kevin Ramsey, our design principals, were delighted with the shaping and outcome of the new holes. Due to excessive rainfall in November and December last year, which coincided with our initial construction period, work was unfortunately slowed down. However, the dry season at the beginning of this year has allowed us to catch up a little. We are working closely with our construction manager Green Dynasty to implement adjustments to the schedule so that work can continue smoothly, with a view towards opening nine new holes to members in September. Members will be pleased to know that we are also considering the possibilities of reopening the entire golf course earlier in 2020.

FIRST WORDS
REOPENING OF THE DRIVING RANGE Our Driving Range reopened on 10 April and I am glad that members got to enjoy the facility. Grassing is now complete on the new range; however we are restricting practice to non-turf areas so that the turf can strengthen and grow-in correctly. For now, the range will operate only in the evenings to allow manual ball retrieval. We assure members that once the turf is fully established and ball retrieval machinery is permitted, the driving range will resume full day operations. In the meantime, enjoy the enhanced driving range with new target greens and fairways; a fresh coat of paint and new energy-saving LED floodlights. Spanking new chairs and other fittings will be installed soon so look out for these further improvements.
REMINDERS FOR YOUR SAFETY Members have been playing on the current Composite 9B layout since October last year. Invariably, due to the ongoing works, some inconveniences, dust and noise are expected, and I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding. Some of the composite hole distances have also been shortened, most notably on composite holes 2 and 9 – both are now relatively short Par-4s at 272m and 247m respectively. Golfers are therefore advised not to tee off until they have checked and ensured that the front golfers have cleared the greens. For your safety, members are advised not to venture into the construction areas as there are heavy machineries at work. These areas are fenced off and classified as “Abnormal Course Conditions”, and the
construction boundary fences have been deemed “Immovable Obstructions”. Hence if your ball strays into the construction areas or should your stance or swing be impeded by the fence, you are entitled to free relief. Members are also advised to walk or drive their buggies with care, as the temporary access paths are layered with small stones. Should you need any assistance, our marshals are always on hand to advise.
ALTERNATIVE GOLFING OPTIONS During this renovation period, we have arranged several alternative golfing options so members can still enjoy the game they love so much. The alternative venues include Singapore Island Country Club (SICC), National Service Resort & Country Club (NSRCC), Sembawang Country Club, Tanah Merah Country Club, Warren Golf & Country Club (WGCC), Marina Bay Golf Course, and even overseas clubs like Ria Bintan Golf Club. More details can be found on our website. In view of the requirement to play on a slope rated course, we held the MercedesTrophy Qualifying Round in conjunction with our April Monthly Medals at Sembawang Country Club on Sunday, 14 April. Response from members were overwhelming as all slots were fully taken up. Our June Monthly Medals will also be held at Sembawang Country Club on Saturday, 29 June. I would like to thank Sembawang Country Club for extending a helping hand to Seletar and more so for setting aside a weekend afternoon for us to hold the event. We will continue to provide members with good golfing venues for our Monthly Medals, and we
are currently in talks with NSRCC, SICC, and WGCC to hold our Monthly Medals at their venue for certain months.
OVERSEAS GOLFING TRIPS In view of the renovation, our golfers are enjoying more overseas golf getaways. One such example was the memorable March trip to Mission Hills in Shenzhen, China, where our golfers challenged themselves on a variety of courses while having fun. In May, the ladies are getting another retreat – this time to the beautiful island of Shikoku, Japan. June will see us heading down under for more interclub friendlies and social games in Perth, while July will see us swinging away having good times in Batam’s Montigo Resorts. So register your interest early and with your support, we look forward to more trips coming.
A TIME FOR FAMILY With important annuals like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and June school holidays all happening in May and June, the mid-year is always a wonderful time for us to reconnect with family. The Club has prepared specially curated set lunches and dinners to celebrate the good times, and lined up fun and educational workshops targeted at building family time. So go and check these out and book early to avoid disappointment. I look forward to the unveiling of the new nine holes coming up in September 2019.

T
owards A Fully Elected Members’ Club!
1
2 March marked a key Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) of our Club, as 60% of the voting members present voted “yes” to adopting the new Constitution. As per Article 45(1) of the current Constitution, this means that the Club will be adopting the new Constitution and transiting to a fully members-elected Management Committee (MC) at the coming Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July, pending approval for the new constitution from the Registry of Societies. Moving forward, members will be able to nominate their preferred candidates for all the nine positions.

CLUB NEWS
Chairman highlighted three points in the new Constitution that the committee had discussed and will propose to be tabled for further amendments at the AGM, the first of which is the increase in capital expenditure under the MC’s jurisdiction. The second point was the power of the MC to co-opt up to four people who are not elected, and the third point pertained to the raising of the penalty fee for members who had petitioned for an EOGM but failed to show up. Chairman also welcomed members with suggestions to improve and refresh the Constitution to bring them up to the MC for tabling at the AGM. As we herald a new era, we would like to thank members again for their time, contribution and good faith. May the Seletar Spirit continue to shine, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the AGM.

Masked Lapwings in the sun - Tan Thian Seng
A
dozen masked lapwings lounging by the refreshing pool, Not sure whether to make a move. For here it is always a summer’s day, Unlike home down-under in native Australia. Surroundings provide insects and worms aplenty, No predators to encounter, Except the occasional bad golfer gone nutty, Tried to take a swing at these innocent watchers. Who wonder what that little ball is doing to mankind, That they hit it as far away and then spend time just to find.
About the Author A proud Seletarian for over 19 years, Tan Thian Seng is semi-retired with three grown up children. The veteran talent management practitioner and adjunct tutor/lecturer has two holes-in-one under his belt, and enjoys golfing as much as he does weaving magic with words. In his own words, he is "not retired, just re-wired."

Confessions of a father S
eletar Buzz speaks to Assistant Course Supervisor, Teo Poh Wan, on his thoughts as a son, father and grandfather. The 71-year-old who received his 25-year Long Service Award last year cares for the plants and greenery at Seletar like his own children.
“A family without a mother figure is incomplete.” Widowed about eight years ago, Poh Wan and his wife were married for over thirty years before he lost her to an illness. She was only 58 years old at the time. “We never fought, never quarreled,” Poh Wan said wistfully in Mandarin, “To me, a home is incomplete without a mother figure. It is just different.” Poh Wan currently lives with his first and second son, the eldest of whom is now 44 years old. His youngest son is married with three children. Poh Wan is gratified by his sons’ unity, especially when they took the lead in arranging their mother’s funeral and ensuring everything was taken care of. The brothers even surprised him with air tickets to Thailand one year, although he chose not to go as he did not like the exhaustion of travelling.
“I was adopted and loved.” Poh Wan was adopted by a family who wanted a son, and his parents doted on him. In turn, he was an obedient child who helped out at his mother’s plantation after his father passed away when he was in secondary school. He grew up with green fingers, tending to fruit trees and vegetables, paving his way for his current career. At 17 years old, he entered the workforce hawking fishballs as his first job.
“Me and my grandchildren.” Blessed with three grandchildren, Poh Wan shares a pretty close relationship with them as their kindergarten is in the same HDB block. He will help to take care of them if they stay overnight at his house, though Poh Wan confesses he does not really know how to play with them. His youngest son and family will visit almost every week, and his daughter-in-law even taught him how to use his current smartphone. When asked how they normally celebrate Father’s Day, he expresses content at having a simple meal with the family, even if it is just at the coffee shop with nothing fanciful.

Major Rule Changes For 2019 Summary of the Major Rule Changes: Taking Relief
1.
Dropping a Ball in a Relief Area Players continue to drop a ball when taking relief, but the dropping procedure is changed in several ways as detailed in Rule 14.3: • The ball must be dropped in and come to rest in the relief area; and there is no re-drop requirement if the dropped ball accidentally hits a person or object after hitting the ground but before coming to rest in the relief area. • If the dropped ball comes to rest outside the relief area, it is dropped a second time; if it comes to rest outside the relief area after being dropped a second time it is placed where it first touched the ground. • If the placed ball does not come to rest on that spot after two attempts, the player will then place the ball on the nearest spot (not nearer the hole) where it will come to rest.
2.
Lost Ball Under Rule 18.2, the time for a ball search (before the ball becomes lost) has been reduced from 5 minutes to 3 minutes.
3.
Embedded Ball The previous default position in the Rules is reversed: • Rule 16.3 allows relief for a ball embedded anywhere in the “general area” (previously known as “through the green”), except when embedded in sand. • Committee may adopt a Local Rule to restrict the relief of a ball embedded in parts of the general area that has been cut to fairway height or less. • In taking relief, the player drops the original ball or a substituted ball within one club-length of (but not nearer the hole than) the spot right behind where the ball was embedded.
4.
Ball to Use in Taking Relief Under Rule 14.3, when taking relief, the player is always allowed the choice to substitute a ball or to use the original ball, including when taking penalty relief and when taking free relief (Rules 15-19). More information can be found at www.usga.org.

Golfing Extravaganza AT MISSION HILLS
T
hink picturesque golf courses, dramatic terrain and cooling temperature, and you can pretty much imagine golfing at Mission Hills, Shenzhen, in China. Led by Captain Phua Hua Seng and Vice-Captain Ho Juan Heng, the club-organised trip to Mission Hills Golf Resort from 27 February to 3 March saw our golfers challenging themselves at four of the twelve stunning championship courses that has hosted over 100 major international tournaments. Playing on consecutive days at Els Course, Ozaki Course, Rose-Poulter Course and Leadbetter Course respectively, the diverse course designs provided plenty of golfing challenge to our 55 golfers! Said Mr Lai Boon Tuck, “This is my first overseas golfing trip with the Club. I have enjoyed the trip very much, thank you to the committee who have made this event such a memorable one.

We are happy to share that grassing has been completed on the new range. To allow the turf to strengthen and growin correctly, practice on the turf areas is temporarily restricted, and the range is operational only during the evening to allow for manual balls retrieval. Once the turf is fully established and ball retrieval machinery permitted, we will resume full day operations. For enquiries, please call 6481 6934 / 6481 5527.

Turf Assessment Trip
The Golf Course Redesign Committee members and management staff assessing the quality of the Zoysia Zeon turf in Thailand in November last year.
W
hat’s in the grass? All About the Zoysia Zeon
Golfers will be delighted to know that we will be using the superior Zoysia Zeon turf grass on our entire golf course (the tees, fairways and roughs), with the exception of the greens. Here’s what you can look forward to when the new golf course reopens! • Beauty With its beautiful dark green hue, the grass accentuates the beauty of the course and creates a breathtaking landscape with its different shades of green at different grass heights. • Playability The high density and stiffness of the leaf blades will make the ball sit up high atop the grass, making it easier for golfers to play off. • Resilience Even with minimal sunlight, the shade tolerant grass can still thrive. The grass is also drought resistant and requires low water use, making it very environmentally friendly.

Site Visit To ensure that works are progressing as intended, members of the Golf Course Redesign Committee make regular visits to the course construction site with our golf course architect Golfplan.

Hole 1 tees
Good news! Grassing has been completed on seven new holes (Holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 13, 15, and 16) and we have entered the grow-in phase. The turf will take approximately four months from the time it is planted before it is fully established and ready for play. Shore protection works using rocks that also look aesthetically pleasing.

What is your idea of...
Mr Perfect C onsistency is talent that knows no rest. Bowling a perfect 300, the highest score possible in a single game, that’s not just rare, it is a feat. The last perfect score in Seletar Bowl occurred three years ago, and earlier this year Nelson Wong became the man to set a new record. The 29-year old has been bowling since he was 12, and clinched his first Seletar Masters Championship last year after having missed it so narrowly for the past years. Seletar Buzz chats with this homegrown bowling whiz on his ideas of perfection beyond bowling!
A Perfect Day Finishing up work, getting home, having a good meal and chilling the night out is good enough for me.
A Perfect Meal I eat anything that’s good... also a perfect meal comes with great company, so when I have it, any meal I have is perfect to me.
A Perfect Holiday That would definitely be leaving everything behind and traveling with my family/friends, relaxing and enjoying the trip without having to worry or stress over anything.
A Perfect Date As long as I’m able to be with someone I love, going anywhere and doing anything is fine, even a home cooked meal and chilling the day away at home will be a perfect date for me.
3 Things in your Bowling bag 1. Bowling balls The black Pure Physics ball was a gift from Howard Saw, who is a friend and brother to me. He gave it to me to welcome me back to bowling after stopping for six to seven years. The orange Fire ball holds the most memories I would say. It has been with me for over 14 years since I was in the Club’s Youth team, through tournaments in and out of the Club.
2. Bowling shoes I’m not particular about my shoe brand. Any brand that feels comfortable to me, I’m ok with it. 3. Bowling tape This helps in my throw, to have a smoother release and also to protect my thumb from abrasions and blisters.

Seletar bowlers for the win!
Double the bowling fun! T
here is arguably nothing more satisfying to a bowler than hearing the sound of the ball striking the pins resonate through the bowling alley, interspersed with cheers and sometimes sighs. Our Mixed Doubles Bowling returned on 31 March with 20 teams competing for the glory of the win. It was with much jubilation that the duo of Ling Seah and Patrick Ong emerged victorious to clinch champion for the second consecutive year. Both sang praises of their partners, with Patrick saying, “She is very good. I think we mix very well. Congratulations, both! Strike a pose!
Congratulations to 1st Runner-up Susan Soon and Cheng Peng Heng.

f all you need is love, as the Beatles crooned, then Seletar definitely have more than enough for everyone! We gathered fellow bowling aficionados from Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) and Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC) at the annual Senior Inter-Club league and Victory dinner. This is the fourth year that the event is being held, and also the second time that Seletar is hosting the event after the inaugural one in 2016. The Beatles-themed dinner on 10 March kicked off with a welcome address by our vivacious Bowling Convenor, Ms Lily Lim, and the bowlers proved in the karaoke contest that they can sing as well as they bowl. We look forward to more competition and bonding good fun next year where the event will be hosted at SRC.
